Well I was sitting around doing homework and overheard the name Tarantino on the tv from across the room. Turns out he was in the audience of American Idol. Just seemed a bit strange and random to me.

NEWSFLASH!:  Tarantino isn't nearly as cool as he thinks he is or tries to be.  I wish everyone who wastes their time watching American Idol would just go ahead and poke their eyes out.  I HATE that SHIT!

What more do you want from the guy, he is a product of pop culture and he proves it by being in the audience of one of the biggest pop influences that has come along in recent memory.

He is living up to exactly what we expect of QT. And that he yelled "ROoooooooooooooooooo-BEeennnnnnnnnnnn" makes it perfect.

Also the stint in Alias, so at least we didn;t have to suffer through some bad QT acting, it just was what it was.

I don't mind that QT is on American Idol, but you've got to be kidding me! McDonalds? How could anyone lower their standards by that much and eat there? I want to be the downfall of McDonalds. I want them to taste unemployment. I want them to taste fire. I want McDonalds to burn at the stake. I want them to taste a whopper and shoot their faces in. I want McDonalds out of my life, out of my existence. It is not a food place, it is a fat place. Understand? How could anyone lower their existence and order a big mac? How could anyone knock years off their life biting that "burger" and I stress the "'s. True story, I once dated a real fat woman who ate at McDonalds. I dated her out of pity though, but I eventually made her choose between me and the Big Mac. Yep, I'm single.

I think this is the most cogent statement here.

You can never quite tell when QT is being serious, and I like that. Detournement, QT... detournement.

I was at the mann chinese theater a couple of nights ago waiting in line for the 1:30 am matrix reloaded show. And who comes walking by? You guessed it, quentin tarantino. he had this blonde girl around his arm and you really couldn't miss him. the funny thing is he was getting in line and we were already near the back of the line.

the motherfucker has so much time on his hands he didn't even bother getting in line early for the matrix reloaded.

anyway, as we were looking for the people who saved our seats, we saw good ol' quentin sitting in the third row from the front. i don't know if any of you have been to the chinese theater before but anything within the fifth row, you are pretty much looking straight up at the ceiling, and you have to repeatedly turn your head at a 180 degree angle during the movie to see what's happening on the right and left sides of the screen.

you heard it here folks, quentin tarantino had a bad seat.

the really funny part? during the whole movie he kept saying "royale with cheese, royale with cheese". at first the audience was thrilled to have quentin tarantino sitting among them but after a while it really got annoying. though he stopped at about the one hour mark. but then he started taking out little dayquill tablets and throwing them at the audience, yelling "take the red pill, take the red pill" and laughing.

he really pissed me off. that's the last time i give him my dayquill.

drumroll

That's nothing. The other day I went to the dollar theatre to see The Hours and who was there ? Quentin Tarantino. He shoved me out of the way and told them he better not have to pay. Then he bit one of the ushers. Nobody would do anything since it was Tarantino. Then in the movie, everytime it showed two women kiss he would say "I'm horny as a rhino ! Whop whop whop whop !!!" and he'd start singing old Beach Boys songs. Then he kicked a pregnant mother right in the stomach.

Totally true, I swear.

Q.T. walked by while wearing an authentic Elvis costume. It was periwinkle blue.  He went bee line to the Starbuck's counter and ordered an Orange Mocha Frappachino. Upon procurring the orange mocha frappachino, he went out into the parking lot and kicked a few children away from his gigantic S.U.V. and sped off with R. Kelly.  I still know what you did last.... time I got my laundry done.

I sing naked with enough Brandy, but not like "Girls Gone Wild" or anything.  I mean, I really don't know how to sing, so other people have to drink a lot too if their around..... And then again, I don't have any bells.... And all along, Q.T. is telling me about the virtues of being able to groove with too much coffee in my blood.  Then we eat lots and lots of hostess cakes and watch Cleaopatra Jones for the 5000 time.  One time he convinced me to join the 700 club and that I was really a puppet monger.

Director Tarantino Focuses on Opening a Specialty Movie House

After a year-and-a-half of negotiation, film director Quentin Tarantino is set to sign a lease agreement for the vacant King Hing theater at 649 N. Spring St. in Chinatown, a source familiar with the deal told Los Angeles Downtown News last week.

George Yu, executive director for the Chinatown Business Improvement District (BID), said the lease contract is in the hands of both Tarantino and the theater's property owner. Tarantino's publicist did not return calls and the director's business manager would not comment.

Tarantino, best known for the 1994 work Pulp Fiction, reportedly wants to create a specialized movie house for Chinese cinema. Yu said that Tarantino has told him stories about visiting the King Hing and Chinatown's other movie theaters as a young man. The director's fourth film, Kill Bill, scheduled to hit theaters this fall, is an homage to Chinese martial arts films of the '70s.

The 425-seat theater was built in the '60s and has been vacant since 1996. The BID arranged for visits from the Building and Safety and Fire departments. The owner will absorb the costs of bringing the structure up to code, and Tarantino will pay for refurbished sound and projection systems.

In addition to the theater, Tarantino will have access to hundreds of Chinese films, some little-seen classics, that are stored on the property and belong to the theater's owner. Tarantino has agreed to catalog them, and restore them if he chooses to screen them.

Yu said that representatives for the director approached him at the end of 2001, but negotiations languished for months, partially because the theater's owner, a woman who speaks limited English, didn't know who Tarantino was.

In March, Tarantino spoke at a Chinese martial arts film festival at UCLA, and stories about Kill Bill, much of which was filmed in China, began to appear in Chinese publications. Tarantino's management team put together a packet of clippings, which Yu showed to the theater's owner.

A lunch meeting was scheduled. The owner, the BID's executive committee and Tarantino's representatives were to attend. Yu's team was surprised when Tarantino himself walked in.

"We felt that he was a man that truly loved Asian cinema, and wanted to have a place to show these movies," Yu said.

The section of Spring Street just north of Cesar Chavez Avenue has undergone several phases of revitalization over the years. The area is part of what was once called China City, a development championed in the 1930s by Christine Sterling, the socialite who shaped Olvera Street. Fires ravaged the street in the '40s, and by that time, New Chinatown was taking shape further north, around Central Plaza.

The idea of a buzz-heavy director adding to the vitality of the area is exciting local business owners, many of whom located in Chinatown following the explosion of art galleries on and around Chung King Road. Recently a new restaurant, Asian Noodles, and fashion public relations firm APR Consulting, opened their doors. Hair stylist Jose Cantu plans to open a salon on Spring Street this summer.

Andrae Gonzalo, owner of another new Spring Street store, clothing boutique Forget It, Jake (a reference to the last line from the film Chinatown), says he remembers the day last year when "mysterious and chic Hollywood types" exited the theater holding film canisters.

"They were button-lipped about the whole thing, but later I heard they were Quentin Tarantino's people, and it's been like Waiting for Godot ever since," said Gonzalo. "That's what I call it, 'Waiting for Godot Tarantino.'"

I think going on American Idol was good advertising on his part.  It got people talking about him again, making them interested in the new movie.  I mean, the largest audience for an entertainment show this year, and a movie coming out in the fall?  It was a smart move.

Tarantino plans another break after Kill Bill

Quentin Tarantino fans will have to wait a long time for his next film after the two parts of Kill Bill.

The director told TV Movie magazine he doesn't like to shoot one movie after the next.

"I don't just want to work, I also want to live and have a lot of sex," he said.

Tarantino admitted Kill Bill takes inspiration from several of his favourite movies.

"I'll steal anything," he told the magazine.

He also spoke about how his interest in the film business began when he was thrown out of school aged 16 and started working as an usher at a sex cinema.

Kill Bill is Tarantino's first movie after a five-year break. Critics are divided on the decision to split the film into two.

The first instalment hits cinemas on October 10, with the second part due out next year.

TARANTINO'S NAUGHTY LETTERS

Movie maker QUENTIN TARANTINO loves reading his sexy fanmail, because his devotees are inventive and raunchy.

Many send naked photos of themselves with sexy notes, but the PULP FICTION director fears most of his saucy fans are too young for him.

He says, "One girl, I'll never forget her. I don't think I called her. I was afraid she was a little too young. In her picture, she could have been 20, or she could have been 15.

"She was a young black girl. I was doing FROM DUSK TILL DAWN with GEORGE CLOONEY. After I read the letter, I went banging on his trailer and read it to him.

"We had a good time reading each other or sex mail. This one was so imaginative. First, she's telling me what movies she'd like to watch with me, and then she starts getting into dirty stuff.

"She mentions kissing for hours. Then she writes, `I want to dress you in a French maid outfit, and while I sit in a chair in a garter belt and panties, smoking a cigarette, I'll make you pick up every piece of lint off the carpet. And I'm not going to be easy about it.'"

Quentin's Pitt-Stop
Quentin Tarantino just can't stop talking about movies. Or acting them out. In public. Our spy caught the motor-mouthed auteur in the lobby of Rolling Stone's New York offices Friday afternoon doing his best Brad Pitt impression. "First rule of fight club," shouted Tarantino, "don't talk about fight club." After loudly explaining the second rule of fight club (see rule No. 1), he turned to his dewy female friend and said, "C'mon, Daisy Duck," and exited. The "Kill Bill" director, who our source says was sporting a gut several Royales-with-cheese removed from Pitt's six-pack abs in the 1999 flick, was at the magazine to attend a luncheon with his muse, Uma Thurman.

I'm sorry, I like QT, but these stunts are so dumb. Its like the biggest nerd got so much money, power and fame and finally made it cool for HIM to jerk off in public. It doesn't matter who he is, he is still jerking off in public. And thats sad.

Screenwriters Are (Obsessive, Creative, Neurotic) People, Too
Source: The Tarantino Archives

Published: November 9, 2003

To write the script, Tarantino went on a quest to recover the original Smith Corona typewriter word processor -- owned by an ex-girlfriend -- that he used on his first two films.

Quentin Tarantino wrote and directed ''Reservoir Dogs,'' ''Jackie Brown'' and ''Pulp Fiction,'' for which he won an Academy Award for best original screenplay. Brian Helgeland has written several original screenplays and adaptations. His script for ''L.A. Confidential'' (which he wrote with the director, Curtis Hanson) won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay. Last month, as their two new films opened to great acclaim, Tarantino and Helgeland sat down in the Regent Beverly Wilshire in Los Angeles to share some wisdom about the screenwriting life.

The Consolation-Prize Theory

Tarantino: Here is a fact, or an observation, or something I've just noticed about the Oscars: when ''American Beauty'' won best picture, that was the beginning of a new day. The underdog movie, the cool movie, finally won. Before that -- and this is a generalization, but I think a true one -- you'd have the favorite, the more Hollywood movie, and you'd have the cooler movie. You know, the critical darling. But the status quo Hollywood movie always got big respect from the middlebrow critics, the Rex Reeds of the world. And invariably, when it came down to the final mano a mano, those status quo movies won best picture. And they won best director. And the cool movie would always win the screenplay award. That was its consolation prize for being cool. And what this highlights is obvious: the writing branch of the Academy is much hipper. There's no two, three, four ways about it. The progressive branch of the Academy is the writing branch.

Helgeland: I think there's truth to that.

Tarantino: My year, the year ''Pulp Fiction'' won screenplay, ''Forrest Gump'' won best picture. What won the year you won for ''L.A. Confidential''?

Helgeland: ''Titanic.''

Tarantino: ''Titanic.'' It didn't even get nominated for screenplay.

Helgeland: Which just proves, I guess, how hip the screenwriting branch is.

Tarantino: I happen to love ''Titanic.'' I think it's a wonderful movie.

Helgeland: I have to excuse myself from talking about it, because we were against it. So I can't do anything but hate it.

Tarantino: I understand. Still, the theory is good. There are tons of examples. For instance, I knew when Jane Campion went up to accept her award for screenwriting for ''The Piano,'' I knew that was the last time I was going to see her that night. And when Neil Jordan went up to accept his award for ''The Crying Game,'' that was the last I was going to see him that night.

Helgeland: You held out hope, though, right?

Tarantino: No, no, I didn't. I knew. When I won, that speech I gave, the one thing I said that was true was something like: ''This is the last you're going to see me tonight.''

Helgeland: I thought you almost said that but didn't quite say it. I had the feeling you knew it, but you didn't want to come right out and jinx yourself.

Tarantino: You may be right. I think I at least alluded to it.

Helgeland: You were like, ''This is the last -- no, I'm not going to say it.'' That's what it was.

Tarantino: That sounds like me. What did you say?

Helgeland: I went on about James Ellroy, I think. That was about it. I said I was going to call the award an Ellroy.

Tarantino: Excellent. You know, I would be very interested to listen to adaptation speeches to see how many times someone actually thanks the original author. Not very often, I bet.

Helgeland: Yeah, well, given a chance to be gracious, it's very hard to actually do so.

The Early Inspirations

Helgeland: I think ''Cool Hand Luke'' was probably the first movie in which I was aware of the writing as its own separate thing. It was that speech when the guy reads Paul Newman the riot act. The speech about going in the box.

Tarantino: Oh, yeah.

Helgeland: It's about a two-page speech. Bang, bang, bang. It's great. I think I was around 12 when I first noticed it.

Tarantino: God, I wish I could say that. I wish I was aware of that kind of writing at 12, but I wasn't. I think the first thing I was really into were novelizations.

Helgeland: I wasn't aware of it as ''writing,'' really, I was just aware of the words. There were a lot of words there. That speech is so long.

Tarantino: Were you into novelizations?

Helgeland: A couple, yeah.

Tarantino: When I saw movies I liked, I would go to the 7-11 and I would find the novelization. That's where I found ''W. W. and the Dixie Dancekings.'' To this day, I reread it every three years. And I still have the same paperback that I bought way back when. The movie was written by Thomas Rickman, who was nominated for an Oscar for ''Coal Miner's Daughter.''

Helgeland: And the novelization?

Tarantino: Also Thomas Rickman. I found out later that Thomas Rickman was so disgusted with what they did with his movie that he asked to write the novelization, so that one person out there would know what it was that he intended. I'm 40 now, and I still read ''W. W. and the Dixie Dancekings'' every three years. I'm that one person. When I saw the movie, though, a few years after I'd first read the book, I was like, What the hell is this? I mean, I was offended. I was literally offended. The novelization was pure. But this was Hollywood garbage. So that's why I started writing screenplays, because I was so outraged.

Helgeland: What was the first thing you wrote?

Tarantino: I was in the sixth grade -- the end of my first time. I was held back; I was in the sixth grade twice. But my first time in the sixth grade, toward the very end, I went and saw ''The Bad News Bears,'' and I fell hopelessly in love with Tatum O'Neal. I mean, so much in love with Tatum O'Neal. I'm embarrassed to tell you how much in love I was with her.

Helgeland: I love that line: ''Look, you crud, just get back to your beer.'' I liked that kid Lupus, too. I wanted to name my son after him, but my wife wouldn't let me name him after a Bad News Bear. That screenplay is so good. I don't think they'd make that movie today. Walter Matthau's character is just too extreme. Driving drunk, with the kids in the car without their seat belts on. One of them could have gone through a window.

Tarantino: My crush on Tatum O'Neal was so strong that actually you could almost consider it your first love. So in the sixth grade I started writing an ABC ''Afterschool Special'' about me meeting Tatum O'Neal. I called her Somerset in the script, and I did what I could never do in real life. I finagled a way, through conniving and lying, to meet Somerset O'Neal. And she was charmed by me. I never got that far in the script. I wrote the first 20 pages and then abandoned it. But after that, that's all I could do in school, just write new scripts. Eventually, the teacher complained to my mom. And at some point, when my mom was mad at me, she said: ''Oh, and by the way, this little writing career of yours? It's over!'' And I thought, This little writing career? This little writing career? You have no vision. I will never buy you the house that Elvis bought his mother. And to this day I have not bought my mother a house. And I never will!

Writing With an Actor in Mind, and Other Rituals

Tarantino: Can I ask you -- I've been thinking about ''Mystic River'' -- how did you feel when Clint cast the movie?

Helgeland: Well, I wasn't thinking of any of the parts. I was thinking of the characters, but I wasn't doing a casting thing in my head. So I thought he was pretty on the money. The only thing is that when he cast Tim Robbins, I immediately thought he was too big for the part, physically. And then when I saw the movie, Tim himself is aware of it, and he plays it kind of like the world has shrunk him. And it's even better for that reason. I don't really write with living actors in mind. I guess I write for dead actors. I'll think of like, you know, Burt Lancaster would be good in this part, and so on. With ''L.A. Confidential,'' it was like, wouldn't it be cool if Dean Martin played the Kevin Spacey part?

Tarantino: I definitely often write for Sam Jackson. I know his rhythms. I feel like he can turn my lines into poetry. In fact, the character of Bill in ''Kill Bill,'' when I first put pen to paper, was Sam Jackson. And finally I had to stop it. I knew I didn't want to cast Sam Jackson as Bill. So I had to mess with the process. It had to be something else. And when I started writing Max Cherry, the main character in ''Jackie Brown,'' I was hopping back and forth between four actors that could do the movie. Paul Newman, Gene Hackman, Robert Forster, and the other one was John Saxon. But in my heart of hearts, I knew it was Robert Forster. And the crazy thing is, I walked into a restaurant, a coffee shop, during the high point of writing it, and Robert Forster was there. In the throes of writing it, at my most passionate, I walk in the room, and he's there. And I gave it to him.

Helgeland: Oh, yeah. The signs are always out there. It's like when you're location-scouting and you start to see the names of the characters on street signs and stuff like that.

Tarantino: Oh, man, I've never had that happen, but I'm going to start looking for that.

Helgeland: There are all the writing rituals, too. Write only on the legal pads, transcribe onto the computer. I'll write all of the ideas and then I'll write scenes. And then when I have a scene done, then I'll type it in just to get it in there. Because I get all kinds of crazy -- you know, it's like the house is going to burn down and all the legal pads will burn up. The idea will be gone. Stuff like that.

Tarantino: Do you type like that, two fingers?

Helgeland: Yeah. Sometimes three.

Tarantino: If it's going good?

Helgeland: Yeah.

Tarantino: Before I wrote ''Reservoir Dogs,'' I was able to get friends of mine to type my scripts. But then, there I was, writing ''Reservoir Dogs'' -- and I couldn't be more excited by anything I've ever written -- and I look around and I've got no one, there's no one who will type it for me. All friends have dried up.

Helgeland: No house for them. No house.

Tarantino: Right. They don't get a house, either. I like that. No house. All right, so I realized I was going to have to do it myself. My girlfriend had one of those old Smith Corona word processors. It was great for me because it was idiotproof. One of the more famous things in ''Reservoir Dogs,'' the argument over who's going to be named what color, was written with one finger on that word processor. So then when I wrote ''Pulp Fiction,'' she let me borrow it again. But for ''Jackie Brown,'' I didn't have it, and it made me crazy. So on ''Kill Bill,'' I was like, I've got to get Grace's old word processor back. But we'd broken up. So I went to her, and I was like, ''Let me just have it.'' She said her sister had it. But her sister gave it to somebody else, and that person gets in touch with me and says: ''I have the Smith Corona word processor that you did 'Pulp Fiction' on. Would you like it?'' Yes. Yes. Yes.

The Anxiety of Adaptation; the Melancholy of Lost Possibilities

Helgeland: The funny thing about James Ellroy is he's my favorite novelist, and had been for years before I was hired to write the script for ''L.A. Confidential.'' So when it was done, my overriding fear was that he wouldn't like it, in which case it would all have been a waste. All of it. Even if the movie came out and did well, it wouldn't matter. But it got sent to him, and he read it and liked it and signed off on it.

Tarantino: That's cool.

Helgeland: Yeah. The high point of the whole experience was that James Ellroy didn't think I had messed it up.

Tarantino: I felt that way with Elmore Leonard and ''Jackie Brown.'' Nothing, not studios, nothing, has ever made me more scared than I was when I changed his heroine in ''Rum Punch'' from a white woman to a black woman. I was actually scared to talk to him. The phone just weighed 500 pounds. And it gained 100 pounds every time I glanced at it. And then I started thinking, You know what, I can't be that way, I've got to go my way. But that didn't really make it any easier to talk to him about it.

Helgeland: It's a very complicated thing, adaptation. And it's a very different kind of satisfaction than you get from doing an original. It's easier, sort of, but also trickier. If you write an original, it's like you went in and dug a well and you hit oil. But an adaptation, it's like the oil well's on fire, and they bring you in to put the fire out and get it working again -- or something like that. It's like, here are these 18 problems that you need to solve in order for this to work as a movie. An original is always -- I just think it's closer to you. Not that they're not all close to you, but the original is more yours. It's your kid, as opposed to the adaptation, which is like having to raise your sister's kid from the time he was 10. With an original, you're not looking over your shoulder at the book.

Tarantino: Yeah, yeah, exactly. You're not thinking, How do I sell this book, how do I sell this moment? Even when it's easy, it's still hard, because the book can do all these things that you can't do. Not the obvious things, like omniscient voice or something. It's the other things. Take ''Jackie Brown.'' Elmore Leonard has this -- for lack of a better word, we'll call it a subplot, though it's not really a full-fledged subplot. Anyway, in this thing, this subplot, that you can't really translate into film, there are three crucial pieces of information, and in the book they all are presented organically. Now you have to figure out a way to get these three crucial pieces of information into the movie while preserving that organic quality. That's tough.

Helgeland: It's like someone wrote a math theorem that covered a whole chalkboard, and then you have to come in and erase a third of it and prove that theorem only with what you have left on the blackboard, if that makes sense.

Tarantino: It makes complete sense. Still, though, whenever I read a novel, I'm always adapting it into a movie as I read it. I wish I could turn that off, but I can't. Everything I read, I'm always making it into a movie as I'm reading it. Is that true in your case?

Helgeland: Yeah, definitely. If I'm in the bookstore and I see a 700-page novel, my first thought is, Ooh, how could you cut this down to size and make a movie out of it?

Tarantino: It's one of the reasons I really enjoy reading some film criticism and theory, because you can't make it into a movie. It's pure writing. Even historical novels, I get lost in how to turn them into movies. I mean, to do any research on World War II is to just create a whole life of movies you could make. But you can't do them all. When I was younger and reading plays and books, I would always think, Oh, man, I'll do this and I'll do that. Only to sadly realize that I can't do it all, and you try to go back and this stuff that I once thought was great, maybe I've outgrown that material.

Helgeland: Yes, I know that feeling.

Tarantino: And there is a little of you that's gone. You're now a new you. And it's not like the new you is so much better. You wish you could have the excitement, the first love, that you had when you read that stuff and making that movie is all you wanted to do. It's not a happy day when you realize you've outgrown material that you once loved.

Helgeland: Yeah, you can't go back. It's very bad.

Favorite Screenplays: A Rapid-Fire Exchange

Helgeland: ''Moonstruck,'' by John Patrick Shanley; ''Cool Hand Luke'' and ''Dog Day Afternoon,'' by Frank Pierson (''Those Pierson scripts made me want to write screenplays'').

Tarantino: ''The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,'' by Sergio Leone and Luciano Vincenzoni; ''His Girl Friday,'' adapted by Charles Lederer from the play ''The Front Page'' (''Not only the greatest dialogue in the history of cinema, but it's a genre that doesn't exist anymore: the newspaper comedy. And it's a blistering social satire''); ''Unfaithfully Yours,'' by Preston Sturges (''I don't love Preston Sturges the way other people love him, but his dialogue is fantastic'').

Helgeland: ''The Poseidon Adventure,'' by Stirling Silliphant and Wendell Mayes (''The characters are introduced perfectly -- you know everything about them almost instantly''); ''The Outlaw Josey Wales,'' by Philip Kaufman and Sonia Chernus; Horton Foote's adaptation of ''To Kill a Mockingbird'' (''It's just a great adaptation'').

Tarantino: ''Rio Bravo,'' by Leigh Brackett and Jules Furthman (''It works as a crackerjack story, and it's just fun. It's the ultimate hang-out movie)''; ''What's Up, Doc?'' by Robert Benton, David Newman and Buck Henry; ''Hero,'' by David Webb Peoples (''This stands alone as a great script that a great movie didn't make'').

Helgeland: ''Heaven Can Wait,'' by Elaine May and Warren Beatty (''A great ending and one of the all-time best remakes''); ''Slap Shot,'' by Nancy Dowd (''One of the best profane scripts of all time''); ''The Big Lebowski,'' by Joel and Ethan Coen (''Because they so convincingly make their own world''); ''Klute,'' by Andy and Dave Lewis (''Jane Fonda's character talks all the time, and you don't know anything about her. Donald Sutherland's character doesn't say a word, and you know everything about him'').

Tarantino: ''Shampoo,'' by Robert Towne and Warren Beatty (''It's just brilliant''); ''The Great Escape,'' adapted by James Clavell and W. R. Burnett (''The shortest three-hour movie ever made in the history of time''); ''Switchblade Sisters,'' by F. X. Maier and John Prizer (''The dialogue is so wonderful that half the people watching it would think that it's bad dialogue -- the script is ingenious'').

Helgeland: ''Rocky,'' by Sylvester Stallone; ''Blade Runner,'' by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples (''It wasn't all art direction -- the dialogue was terrific in that movie''); ''Unforgiven,'' by David Peoples (''The best script in my lifetime'').

Tarantino: ''Out of the Past,'' by Daniel Mainwaring (''Maybe the best dialogue in a dialogue-heavy genre, the noir movie''); ''Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!'' by Russ Meyer and Jack Moran (''The funniest, most quotable dialogue''); ''Scarface,'' by Oliver Stone (''Extremely memorable -- nearly every line of the movie is worth repeating'').

I heard that Quentin may be a guest judge during movie song week on American Idol.  That should be interesting (and good promotion for Kill Bill vol. 2)

Found some info from CNN:

Adding guest judges

Speaking of blueprints, "Idol" is mostly following its own. After the two-hour show Tuesday (8 p.m. EST), the group of 12 finalists will be pared down in weekly sing-offs.

Guest judges will be on hand, with Elton John, filmmaker Quentin Tarantino and Donna Summer among the prospects. The series culminates with a May 25-26 finale.

I watched part of Kimmel, and before that I saw him and Daryll Hannah on Howard Stern.  The Kimmel show was kind of funny, with Jimmy's uncle dressed as Pai Mei, but I didn't really like the concept of it much.  What director is still referencing films he did 10 and 12 years ago?  I like his films, but damn, he is a media whore.

Coppola and Tarantino Crafting a Romance?
Source: IMDB

Celebrated directors Sofia Coppola and Quentin Tarantino have sparked reports they're dating, following a series of intimate meetings in New York. The maverick movie-makers stunned diners at Manhattan's plush Downtown Cipriani restaurant on Friday, when the unlikely pair sat down together for a romantic meal. Coppola and Tarantino fueled speculation they were an item on Sunday when they were spotted strolling the streets of New York with their arms wrapped around each other, according to the Pagesix website. Lost In Translation director Coppola - who has been single since her split with husband Spike Jonze last year - later visited a video shop with Tarantino, they rented some movies and left looking "very cozy". However, a representative for the directors has downplayed reports of a romance, insisting the pair are just "good friends".

Imagine a collaboration between the two.  No, not that kind of collaboration -- they'll show up on "If they mated" soon enough, though.  Maybe.  But...

- The Virgin Suicides + Kill Bill = Kamikaze!
- Lost in Translation + From Dusk 'Til Dawn = A stunning film where insomnia and jetlag plagues two lost souls WHO HAVE TO SAVE THE TOWN FROM AN ONSLAUGHT OF VAMPIRES!!!
- Reservoir Dogs + The Godfather: Part III = the harrowing story of the movie shoot that went very badly.

Well, Conesey didn't think so.  At least, there was an "If They Mated..." last night, and no Tarantino/Coppola mention.  Either they aren't high profile enough (doubtful since Tarantino's been on the show), or they just didn't hear about the rumor yet.

To my surprise, Quentin Tarantino and Tina Fey were both on Last Call with Carson Daly last night (Friday night/Saturday Morning, 4/30-5/1).  Doesn't do anyone any good now, of course, but I'm just saying in case you want to keep an eye out for the rerun.  They were both entertaining as always, and Daly had some kid actors reenact the House of Blue Leaves fight.  Daly wasn't funny, but what else is new.

now after reading this scroll all the way up ..and see.....

Tarantino, Bishop & Madsen Reteam on Hell Ride
Source: The Hollywood Reporter

Kill Bill director Quentin Tarantino and "Vol 2" star Larry Bishop, who played the foul-mouthed owner of the strip club where Michael Madsen's character worked, will produce biker film Hell Ride. Bishop is writing and will direct the film, as well as star in it with Madsen. Tarantino might star in the movie as well.

The Hollywood Reporter says the story deals with the characters Pistolero (Bishop), the Gent (Madsen) and Comanche (Tarantino) and the deadly unfinished business among them. The film's budget would be low and it would shoot in August or September.

Bishop starred in several biker movies in the late '60s and early '70s, including The Savage Seven, Chrome and Hot Leather and Angel Unchained. He also wrote, directed, co-produced and starred in 1996's Mad Dog Time.

Coppola and Tarantino a Couple
Jul 14, 1:35 PM EST

The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- At the Cannes Film Festival in May, director Quentin Tarantino announced, "Cinema, mon amour!" It appears he may have another love in his life.

Tarantino and filmmaker Sofia Coppola are "seeing each other," Bumble Ward, publicist for both, confirmed Tuesday.

They "enjoy each other's company," Ward told The Associated Press.

Earlier this year, Coppola, 33, won the Oscar for best original screenplay for "Lost in Translation." Tarantino won the screenplay Oscar in 1995 for "Pulp Fiction."

The couple were recently photographed together in Madrid, Spain, where the 41-year-old Tarantino was promoting the second installment of his bloody revenge series, "Kill Bill."

Tarantino is the third director in Coppola's life.

TARANTINO WILL NEXT WORK WITH KERMIT THE FROG
Source: HollywoodReporter

Reuters reports that R&B singer Ashanti and director Quentin Tarantino are set to star in ABC's original movie tentatively titled "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz" with Queen Latifah currently in final negotiations to join in the take on the classic L. Frank Baum novel.

Ashanti plays aspiring performer Dorothy Gale, who works at the diner of her Auntie Em (Latifah) in a small Kansas town while dreaming of hitting the big time.

One day, a tornado sweeps up the trailer where Dorothy lives, and she finds herself in a Muppet version of Oz. There, she meets the Munchkins (played by the Muppet rats), the Scarecrow (Kermit the Frog), the Tin Man (Gonzo) and the Lion (Fozzie).

The group's quest to get the Wicked Witch (Miss Piggy) culminates with a fight scene between Dorothy and the witch.

As the action is about to begin, the film cuts to Tarantino pitching to Kermit how the scene should be done -- a cameo written specifically for the "Kill Bill" director.

Kirk R. Thatcher, who directed NBC's successful "Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie" in 2002, is on board to shoot the film, which will air as part of the Wonderful World of Disney franchise. It will feature several music numbers but will not be a musical.

What are your thoughts on AvP?

"I'm a pretty big fan of Ridley Scott in terms of his abilities as a director (dig the fancy sentences!) so I was a bit let down by AVP, but the graphics were kept to a minimum all considered and it had some good parts but overall...nothing special. I'm not really into that kinda stuff."

Quentin Tarantino + Takashi Miike = Live Theater?
Okay, here's a doozy and judging from the source it's legit ...

While introducing tonight's Midnight Madness screening of Takashi Miike's Zebraman, Toronto Film Festival programmer Colin Geddes first relayed Miike's regrets for not being in attendance and then relayed this little bit of news:

Miike and Quentin Tarantino were both in attendence at the just-wrapped-up Venice Film Festival this year and at some point during the proceedings the two of them sat down for a little chat. I'm willing to bet Quentin did most of the talking. But what came out of that talk was this: when writing the screenplay for Kill Bill Tarantino originally gave Go Go Yubari a twin sister, a character cut out of the final script for pacing reasons. Tarantino and Miike talked about the character some and the end result was Tarantino giving Miike permission to direct a stage play based on the Yubari twin and the removed section of screenplay.

No word on what the title will be or when this will actually hit the stage - Miike's got three films in various stages of production right now, so it won't be any time soon - but Geddes is in regular contact with the man and I very much doubt he would have spilled this if it wasn't definite.

Writer/director Quentin Tarantino might soon be putting a new television gig under his belt: directing an instalment of the original CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

George Eads (Nick Stokes) revealed Tarantino might do an upcoming CSI episode to the syndicated news magazine Extra. Eads was interviewed backstage at the SAG awards, right after the CSI cast won its award for Best Drama Ensemble (story). No specifics are available yet, and it's not known for which episode Tarantino would assume the director's chair.

Tarantino became famous around the cult film circuit with the Sundance debut of his critically acclaimed independent film, Reservoir Dogs. Since then, he has moved on to direct films such as Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, and Kill Bill: Volumes 1 & 2. Tarantino is most famous for his good dialogue and use of martial arts sequences.

The director is not a stranger to television. His directing credits include an episode of ER; he was also planning to direct an episode of The X-Files, but the deal didn't go through due to problems with the Directors' Guild. Tarantino has appeared as a guest-star on ABC's Alias as well.

Empire Awards Salutes Tarantino's Work

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fus.movies1.yimg.com%2Fentertainment.yahoo.com%2Fimages%2Fent%2Fap%2F20050314%2Flab113_britain_.sff.jpg&hash=26fbef1b9c834f8b7155b061bca55a00f5be7687)

Quentin Tarantino, director of the "Kill Bill" movies, "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs," was named film icon of the decade at the Empire Awards.

"The fact that England has embraced me as one of its own is really cool," said Tarantino, who accepted his award Sunday. "I hope to give you at least 15 more years of movies, I'm not going to be this old guy that keeps cranking them out."

"My plan is to have a theater by that time in some small town and I will be the manager this crazy old movie guy," the 41-year-old director said." I've made enough money that nobody even needs to show up at the theater. It's just having something to do."

More than 12,000 readers of Empire magazine cast voted for the awards.

As the day goes to an end, there is more to report on this entire Tarantino news flash from England. Now The Sun has a nice follow up to all those stories.

To sum up: QT likes to make 15 more years of movies; he will release the 4 hour Kill Bill, probably with the new out-of-Miramax/Disney company and yes, he's still writing Inglorious Bastards.

Quentin said: "Thank you very, very much and I hope to give you at least 15 more years of movies that hopefully will get your d*** hard just as much as the first ones. I'm not going to be this old guy that keeps cranking them out. My plan is to have a theatre by that time in some small town and I will be the manager - this crazy old movie guy. I've made enough money that nobody even needs to show up at the theatre. It's just having something to do. I will make little speeches before each movie. That sounds like a pretty cool life."

Before the ceremony Quentin spoke to the Sun Online about the best films released in 2004.

"This has been one of my favourite years for movies for a long time, although not for anything that got nominated at the Academy Awards for the most part. As much as I liked Million Dollar Baby and The Aviator, there were movies I loved. Shaun Of The Dead was my favourite film of last year and I'm not just saying that because (director) Edgar Wright is standing next to me. I also think it is the best British movie made in the last seven years, since The Crying Game, and maybe the best British movie about young people right now I've ever seen. My second favourite movie of the year was The Passion Of The Christ. I'm actually in the writers' branch of the Academy, but I wanted to switch over to the directors' branch so I could vote for Mel Gibson to win an Oscar. I think The Passion Of The Christ is one of the most magnificent directing jobs I've seen in my life. I hadn't seen a movie bring back the imagery of silent cinema until that film. I also loved Before Sunset, The Incredibles, Team America, OldBoy, Fahrenheit 9/11 and Harold And Kumar Get The Munchies."

And all of Quentin's fans will be pleased to know that he is putting his most recent movie Kill Bill, released in two parts, back together.

He told The Sun: "It will be Kill Bill the Japanese version - the four hour movie all together with an intermission in the middle. It will probably be the first release from Miramax's new company, first at cinemas and then on DVD. It will also probably get a higher age rating. We had to cut it when Miramax was part of Disney but now we can do whatever the fuck we want."

Tarantino also revealed that his next movie will be Inglorious Bastards, his long-awaited pet project about a platoon of World War II soldiers trapped behind enemy lines.

"I've been kicking back and now I'm getting ready to start working again, and I'm at the very beginning of writing the script for Inglorious Bastards."

NASCAR Laps Leave Tarantino Speechless

Quentin Tarantino has produced his share of action-packed, thrilling moments. For once, he was just along for the ride. Tarantino, a NASCAR novice, was treated to several hair-raising laps in a stock car Saturday that left the eccentric film director speechless at Bristol Motor Speedway.

"Yeah, baby! That's what I'm talking about!" he yelled after several seconds of silence. "That was incredible. I didn't 100 percent know what to expect when I got here. I was very open to be intoxicated, and I most definitely was."

Tarantino was introduced to NASCAR by good friend Mauricia Grant, a Busch Series official who lives near him in Hollywood. When he asked her about attending a race, she encouraged him to choose Bristol a short track where the bumping, banging and post-race altercations can be as intense as an action scene from "Pulp Fiction" or "Kill Bill."

She also arranged for him to take a ride with TNT commentator Wally Dallenbach, who drives a celebrity around the track each week as part of his "Wally's World" segment. Recent ride-along partners have ranged from actors Ben Affleck, Jamie Foxx, David Spade and singer Lisa Marie Presley, who has made a point to publicly complain about how Dallenbach intentionally tried to scare her during a ride last month.

"You're not going to whine after this ride like Lisa Marie Presley, are you?" Dallenbach asked during the warm-up laps.

There was no whining when it was over. Just a brief silence as Tarantino soaked in the adrenaline rush. After, he said he asked Dallenbach to make the ride as scary as possible with close-calls with the Bristol walls.

"Ben Affleck, he looked like a little girl!," Tarantino said. "When I saw Ben Affleck and Dave Spade acting like little girls, I said I got this one. I'm all good. I don't have to worry about nothing.

"That part that was in the wall, that was the bomb. I wanted a lot of wall time and Wally gave me the wall time."

Tarantino's day didn't end with his ride. After watching Friday night's Busch race from one of the suites he said he rooted for Kevin Harvick and had been cheering on Harvick to "crash (Greg Biffle) into the wall" he was scheduled to stick around for Saturday night's main event and watch it from the pit Grant was working in.

But it was clear that Tarantino was hooked. He was making plans to take a lesson in the Richard Petty Driving Experience next week at California Speedway, and possibly attend the race.

"I love it," he said. "This is, in one word adrenaline."

Tarantino Upset with Bond Producers

Quentin Tarantino has slammed James Bond producers for failing to contact him following his request to direct forthcoming 007 movie Casino Royale, because the remake had been his idea. In 2004, the Pulp Fiction film-maker suggested producers remake Ian Fleming's original 1953 storyline, after screenwriters Robert Wade and Neal Purvis, who penned The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day, publicly announced they were struggling to write a third script. Tarantino had hoped to direct Casino Royale and had advised the Bond team to "go my way and do it a little differently", while maintaining he could still be trusted with the legendary superspy series. But he was upset not to be contacted when Goldeneye director Martin Campbell was instead chosen to direct the new 007 thriller starring Daniel Craig. Tarantino says, "I'm annoyed that the James Bond producers never called me to talk about it because I can tell you that they would not be making Casino Royale if I hadn't talked about it first. "They should have called me. Especially since they are taking my idea and they are taking the publicity I gave them towards that idea. "They should have at least had the courtesy to have coffee with me."

July 14, 2006 -- QUENTIN Tarantino was Uma Thurman's knight in shining armor during Wednesday night's big thunderstorm. Thurman was at a party for her funny new movie, "My Super Ex-Girlfriend," on the rooftop at Bed, on West 27th Street, chatting with WB11's Emily Frances when the storm hit. According to a witness, "Things were flying all over the place. Everyone ran for cover, and Quentin scooped her up in his arms and carried her to safety, leaving Emily to fend for herself." Tarantino left the next day for Austin, Texas, to continue filming "Grind House," which he's co-directing with Robert Rodriguez.

He's also showing Austin "KILL BILL: THE UNSEEN, UNCENSORED FULL-LENGTH CUT"

He's presenting it... I'm a little disapointed because I had a chance to get tickets before it sold out, but reading the description and the run-time, I wasn't sure if this was the same thing as the final cut that he's been talking about or just both movies back to back with the House of Blue Leaves scene in color so I hesitated.  Now it's too late.

Isn't that all there is to the full cut, though?  Possibly with the omission of the line that ended Vol. 1 (and shouldn't have been put there at all)?  The only deleted scene I've ever heard about was the one on the Vol. 2 DVD with Spawn.

I thought he was going to edit it all together to make it more like one film instead of two films back to back.

Tarantino brings Kill Bills together
Source: iol.ie

Movie-maker Quentin Tarantino is planning to re-release his Kill Bill movie saga as one complete film with an intermission.

The cult director plans to start work on merging Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Kill Bill: Vol. 2 once the holiday season is over and hopes to release it in selected cinemas late next year [2006].

He says: "I want to cut the whole movie together like one big epic with an intermission in the middle like a 60s film. It'll be coming out in theatres.

"I've been holding off because I've been working on it for so long that I just wanted a year off from Kill Bill and then I'll do the big supplementary DVD package."

Tarantino makes the cut for ACE

Quentin Tarantino will receive the ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award at the 57th annual Eddie Awards ceremony, set for Feb. 18 at the Beverly Hilton.

Tarantino was voted the honor by the board of directors of the American Cinema Editors, which said in announcing his selection, "His rich and original body of work represents the best that our creative community has to offer. He has also been a proud and vocal supporter of the contributions of editors to filmmaking and shares a long and close relationship with editor Sally Menke, A.C.E., with whom he has collaborated on seven films."

Tarantino's most recent features include the two "Kill Bill" movies as well as "Sin City," on which he was billed as special guest director. Along with Robert Rodriguez, he directed "Grindhouse," which the Weinstein Co.'s Dimension Films will release April 6.

Tarantino's Grindhouse Festival Announced
Source: Dimension Films

In anticipation of the eagerly-awaited theatrical release of Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's double feature Grindhouse on April 6th, the New Beverly Cinema will host Quentin Tarantino Presents the Los Angeles Grindhouse Festival 2007 from March 4th – April 30th, 2007, it was announced today by creator and curator Tarantino. The event will be a showcase for the risqué films exploiting sex, violence and extreme subject matter from the 1970s that inspired Grindhouse, with prints directly on loan from Tarantino's private collection, many of which are unavailable on DVD and have not screened for the public in theatres in decades. With double and triple features of roughly seven different films in rotation per week, the ground-breaking fest will screen over 50 historic films throughout the eight-week run, all personally selected for audience re-discovery by the director.

"'Grindhouse' is a tribute to the movies I have loved for decades that have mostly been under-appreciated and forgotten," states Tarantino. "I'm thrilled to have this chance to show the original works for a new generation to discover, and to give Los Angeles the rare opportunity to see these gems on the big screen."

During the course of the festival, Tarantino has scheduled various theme nights including the "Euro Sex Comedies Triple Feature," which will feature screenings of Sex with a Smile, Sex on the Run and The Oldest Profession; "Back-To-Back Kung Fu Superstar Angela Mao Double Feature," presenting two of the actress' greatest classics Return of the Tiger and Stoner; "Regional Double Feature," with screenings of Hot Summer in Barefoot County and Redneck Miller; and the "All Blood Triple Feature," showcasing Blood Spattered Bride, Asylum of Blood and Mary, Mary, Bloody Mary.

Favorite filmmakers of Tarantino's highlighted during the festival include famed cult director John Hayes with the double feature Grave of the Vampire, written by David ("The Sopranos") Chase and Jailbait Babysitter; sexploitation filmmaker Roger Vadim, who will be represented by his Pretty Maids All in a Row; Al Adamson, whose Female Bunch will screen; Fernando Di Leo's Wipeout and Cirio H. Santiago, director of the classic The Muthers.

This whirlwind festival features many uncensored and uncut, not to be missed cinematic experiences such as the sexploitation films The Girl From Starship Venus and The Legend of the Wolf Woman; the blaxploitation films Brotherhood of Death and The Mack; the teen summer comedies The Van, Pick-up Summer and Summer Camp; and the martial arts classics Fearless Fighters, Super Man Chu, Chinese Hercules and Black Dragon; as well as the ultra rare 35mm prints of Slithis, Shame of the Jungle and Chinese Hercules, just to name a few.

In addition to showcasing the "Grindhouse" films from his own vault, the New Beverly Cinema will exhibit a number of original posters and lobby cards of the films from Tarantino's personal collection as well throughout the run of the festival.

For show times, check local listings or visit the New Beverly Cinema website or call for program information (323) 938-4038.

Dimension Films' Grindhouse consists of Tarantino and Rodriguez's two feature length films screened back-to-back: Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" and Tarantino's "Death Proof."

Tarantino's Grindhouse Fest celebrates cinematic cheese
If you want to know what made Quentin Tarantino the man he is today, look at the L.A. grindhouse life he's loved.
Source: Los Angeles Times

Some kids love Disneyland, but for little Quentin Tarantino, the happiest place on Earth was always a scabby L.A. movie theater. That's where he could sit in the dark with bloodied samurais, dangerous pimps and zombie brides. His search for the next matinee took him to every freeway and to distant neighborhoods, which is why Tarantino now knows the city like the back of an amputated hand.

Sometimes, it's even hard for the filmmaker to say where the movie screen stops and the real Los Angeles begins.

"I was watching this blaxploitation movie called 'Death Force' at the World Theater, which used to be on Hollywood Boulevard just up from Gower. I'm there watching this movie about these two gangs fighting to take over L.A. They're pulling a 'Scarface,' just killing everyone. Well, two gang members are walking down Hollywood Boulevard and a car pulls up and guns them down right in front of the theater that I'm sitting in! I was like 16, and it remains to this day one of the great moments for me."

No one mixes art house and butcher shop quite the way the 43-year-old Tarantino does. And now he is sending a valentine back to the vintage exploitation films that have been his lurid muse: This Sunday marks the start of his Los Angeles Grindhouse Festival 2007, a tenderly titled, eight-week retrospective of five dozen deliriously bad films, among them "Autopsy," "Jailbait Babysitter," "Chinese Hercules" and "The Legend of the Wolf Woman." For the uninitiated, "grindhouse" is a nickname for the creaky theaters that would "grind" away their projectors for triple features filled with second-run films, exploitation flicks and foreign-film curiosities.

The films at the New Beverly Cinema are all from prints in Tarantino's personal film library and, more important, from the reels that grind on in his head and heart. Last week, the director took a break from his labors on his own upcoming film project (that would be "Death Proof," but more on that later) to talk about the festival and also give a quick tour of his Los Angeles — the one he lives in and the one that lives in his films.

Not the silent type

Tarantino drives a hulking Ford Mustang that's painted yellow and black to match the famous fighting togs of Uma Thurman's character in the "Kill Bill" movies, and the director himself is about as subtle as his ride. While scavenging for a parking spot along Sunset Boulevard, he paid roughly equal attention to the radio and the road.

He talks fast and loud, his synapses are set on rapid-fire mode, and silent places seem to make him itchy. That's one reason he does much of his writing at Toi on Sunset, the spiky Thai restaurant that is about as serene as a mosh pit.

"It's the best place to eat after 2 a.m.," Tarantino said, after parking the Mustang and ordering a steaming plate of veggie curry and a cup of warm sake. Tarantino was fresh from his more official office, which is in a converted house just north of Melrose Avenue. Toi is a hub for Hollywood hipsters, but the place that Tarantino really wanted to talk about was a long-gone movie theater in Carson.

"The Carson Twin Cinema, that was pretty much the perfect grindhouse theater. It was family-owned, this cool old Italian guy ran it, and it was in the Scottsdale Shopping Center," he said. "They would show 'Enter the Dragon' and 'The Five Fingers of Death' as a double feature three times a year, because it would always sell out."

The theater had sticky floors, Samoan ushers and plenty of fights. It's the place that, once he could get into R-rated films, Tarantino would spend his weekends soaking up Italian horror films, pompom-girl flicks and an endless parade of kung fu fights. The dialogue Tarantino heard from the other patrons stuck with him as much as the cheesy lines from the movies; the racial epithets, drug talk and leering blue chatter taught him the celebrated idioms of his characters in "Pulp Fiction," "Reservoir Dogs" and "Jackie Brown."

"I'm never going to be shy about anything, what I write about is what I know; it's more about my version of the truth as I know it," Tarantino said. "That's part of my talent, really — putting the way people really speak into the things I write. My only obligation is to my characters. And they came from where I have been."

Tarantino's mom was only 16 when he was born, and when he hit that age himself, he dropped out of Narbonne High School in Harbor City to chase a career as a filmmaker. A dozen years later, he catapulted to fame with "Reservoir Dogs" in 1992 and, along with Alfred Hitchcock and Spike Lee, is one of the few directors who have shaped a pop-culture persona as big as their films. Whether popping up as an actor in his own films or as a presenter at the Grammys, Tarantino is recognizable as a frenetic, slightly buggy character — the perfect combination of Lenny and Squiggy from "Laverne & Shirley."

His true romance with film began at a young age, and it was a little scary from the get-go. "The first movie I went to see, that I remember going to see, was 'Airport.' I was like 4 or 5 years old. It was a big, big deal, right? My parents took me. They were very young. We went to Hollywood and we walked up and down Hollywood Boulevard, and it was scary. I mean, to me it looked like there was a lot of danger, so I was staying really close to my parents. But then there was this moment where I stopped to look in a window and they kept walking...."

At this point Tarantino shakes his fists. His eyes get big and crazy, even more than usual. "They came back and got me. But man, if I had turned around and they weren't there!"

Grinding away

The New Beverly Cinema is like a dive bar without a liquor license or the stools. Tarantino dropped by the revival house after the meal at Toi, and there was a curvy young woman standing on the sidewalk randomly flashing strangers. Inside the theater's lobby, Rudy Ray Moore, the star of blaxploitation movies such as "Dolemite," was giving autographs to young hipsters who had come to see a screening of one his movies that night.

Tarantino said he would love to be at the venue every night to introduce each of the films in the coming festival, but he's in crunch time on "Death Proof," which is his half of a two-film collaboration with director pal Robert Rodriguez that will be in theaters on April 6 under the umbrella title of "Grindhouse." While Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" deals with aliens on a rampage, Tarantino's "Death Proof" is a juiced-up tale of muscle cars and fistfights. Though its sleekness and irony separate it from the cheesy movies that will be screening at the New Beverly, they all spring from the same sordid cinema ethos.

In fact, the festival is a way for Tarantino to draw attention to not only his new movie but also the scruffy works that inspired it. And he scheduled some of his favorites for late April, so he could introduce them and explain why they are so wonderfully bad.

Tarantino said a full third of the films in the festival were made here in the Los Angeles area and that watching the backdrops is a sort of history lesson.

"The exploitation films were made in such an artless way with these big wide shots of Sunset Boulevard or of Arcadia or downtown L.A. or wherever," he said. "In mainstream films, especially in the 1980s, the Los Angeles you saw wasn't the real one; it was a character with this back-lot sort of atmosphere. They tried to luxuriate it. In exploitation films, you see what the place really looked like, you see the bars and mom-and-pop restaurants."

The films of director Al Adamson, for instance, are "almost anthropological," Tarantino said. The man who made "Brain of Blood" and "The Naughty Stewardesses" may not have had true talent, but his camera caught reality in a way the bigger budget films did not. "I was watching one, and it was this scene at the parking lot of where the ArcLight is now. And I couldn't believe it. Man, that Kentucky Fried Chicken on Vine near Sunset, that's been there for 25 years!"

Tarantino used to take the bus to the far corners of L.A. in search of the gritty movies that taught him about violence, sex and culture. He still gets around a lot, but now it's usually to see one of his own films in different cultural echo chambers.

"I like to go down to the Magic Johnson Theatres to see my movies there. I like to see them in the suburbs, and downtown, just to see how the audiences take it all in."

Tarantino is as much a fan as he is a filmmaker, and he's even flirted with buying a Chinatown theater so he can have his own place to run reels of kung fu movies. He revels in dropping by award shows, industry events, film festivals and conventions, any setting that puts him in proximity to an audience that he can pitch his version of pop culture to. Standing in line at the Starbucks across the street from the New Beverly Cinema, he was asked why he spends so much time in front of the camera. "Hey, this is my time. I think in years to come too, people will say that guy got it right. His movies are the ones that still matter."

The real L.A.

Tarantino is not a good singer, but that doesn't stop him. Asked his favorite L.A. song, he chews on the question and then warbles an old Ry Cooder tune, "Bop Till You Drop."

Going down in Hollywood

You better hope that you don't run out of gas

Down in Hollywood

He'll drag you right out of your car and kick your ass

Down in Hollywood

Raymond Chandler created a fictional Los Angeles that somehow helped make the actual city more real. Tarantino has done that with his films. In "Jackie Brown," for instance, nearly every scene was within a 15-minute drive of LAX, and Tarantino scoured Hawthorne to find just the right apartment for his title character, a stewardess who pulls in $16,000 a year. "I needed a place she could afford the rent on but that was also big enough for us to shoot in. The details, man, the real things, that's what I want."

One of his proudest moments: In "Reservoir Dogs," two of his killers discuss Ladera Heights, which one describes as the Beverly Hills for blacks. His partner corrects him: No, it's more like the black Palos Verdes. "I was watching that in Rome, in a theater, and I'm just laughing. That movie played all over planet Earth, and how many people got that joke? L.A. people got it, and I loved it."

But sometimes you learn more about a place by leaving it.

Tarantino spent a year in Tennessee one summer. ("That's what it felt like.") The whole place gave him the creeps. There was only one theater, a drive-in. It was 1973, the summer of "Walking Tall," the archetypal hixploitation knuckle movie, which would have been fine, except its hero, Sheriff Buford Pusser, was based on a real lawman from McNairy County, Tenn., and, unlike in L.A., the locals in the Volunteer State weren't accustomed to seeing themselves up on the screen.

"It played all ... summer ... long." Tarantino moaned, still clearly exasperated. "Not only did it play all summer long, but after the first night, the projectionist or the owner or whoever, cut out the big baseball bat scene.

"He thought it was too violent! Too violent! Thank God I was there the first night! And then after that, every weekend I would go and expect the scene to be back and it wasn't there. I didn't even know you could do that. I didn't understand what had happened until later. So not only am I stuck in Tennessee watching a movie about Tennessee, but it's a compromised version of 'Walking Tall.' "

Apparently, it never occurred to young Tarantino that he might simply skip a weekend at the theater instead of undergoing this extended private torture. Regardless, it did leave an impression: "I couldn't get back to L.A. fast enough."

Is "Death Proof" Tarantino's John Wesley Harding?
Source: Rolling Stone

Record store clerk turned zeitgeisty film director Quentin Tarantino has a wide variety of interests (American Idol, Uma Thurman) and apparently one of them is boxing. In the new issue of GQ Tarantino said that he used to box at Bob Dylan's gym. Tarantino dishes on the singer's skills in the sparring ring. "He [Dylan] nailed me with a really good one. We were sparring together, and he got one in there when I wasn't paying attention. I think it was a right jab. I let my guard down for a second, and he just thumped it in. It was a good punch."

Tarantino went on to gush about his love for Bob, saying that while working on his new film Death Proof, he listened to Dylan's new album every day, also spent a lot of time with Self Portrait, and pondered the ways in which Death Proof is like John Wesley Harding. "I wouldn't go so far as to say that this film is my John Wesley Harding, but it accomplished some of the same things to me that John Wesley Harding did," the director said. "I turned a corner with this script ... and I think that it's going to lead to other interesting things down the line."

Perhaps Tarantino will find God, wear a series of decade-appropriate leisure suits, and make several more genre-bending, career-defining, totally genius pieces of work? Cool.

Tarantino Takes Pedicab in Manila Floods

Quentin Tarantino was forced to hop into a pedicab to escape gridlock on flooded Manila streets Wednesday as he made his way to the presidential palace to receive a film award.

Tarantino's limousine had been stuck in traffic for about 2 1/2 hours on a bridge close to Malacanang palace when Filipino filmmaker Amable "Tikoy" Aguiluz suggested they take separate pedicabs (cycle rickshaws).

About 15 minutes later, they reached a street corner near the palace gates where a car picked them up, Tarantino said.

"It was a lot of fun. It's the way it is, I guess. ... It was wild," he told reporters. "No worries. I've done more serious things than that."

Tarantino was 40 minutes late for the ceremony but 30 minutes ahead of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Pounding rain from Typhoon Sepat flooded parts of metropolitan Manila, prompting authorities to suspend classes, briefly stopping a commuter train and slowing Arroyo's convoy.

Tarantino, director of "Pulp Fiction" and the "Kill Bill" movies, wore a traditional Filipino formal shirt and sandals.

He was handed size-13 black leather shoes because sandals and rubber shoes aren't allowed inside the palace during presidential ceremonies, said a staff member of the National Commission on Culture and Arts.

Tarantino, 44, was among three Lifetime Achievement award winners in the 9th Cinemanila, a film festival featuring foreign and local movies.

He is writing a book about Philippine films, particularly the horror and action movies he saw in his youth.

What the f*** is Heroes?
Source: The Star

FILMMAKER Quentin Tarantino has dabbled with psychos in Natural Born Killers and assassins in Reservoir Dogs - but it seems he can't suspend his belief enough to work with superpowers.

The cult director has turned down the opportunity to direct an episode of hit TV show Heroes - because he's never watched the series.

Quentin - who also gave us Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction - admits he has snubbed numerous offers by bosses of the superhero programme because he isn't a fan.

He said: "They were trying to get me to do one. I haven't even seen the f***ing show.

I love his films but damn Tarantino makes me uncomfortable. He seems like one of the guys in Hostel that would kill someone if they could do it legally...or at least get away with it. Perhaps he was always like this or perhaps it's all the weed and coke? Though I don't get this vibe from PTA so it must be more than the drugs.

That said, I laughed like crazy because Tarantino just seems so weird. But hey, if that's where his inspiration come from, let him kick many paparazzo ass...  :-D

The friends of Friends: 17 gimmicky cameos intended to boost TV ratings

12. Quentin Tarantino, All-American Girl ("Pulp Sitcom")
http://www.avclub.com/content/feature/the_friends_of_friends_17/2

Quentin Tarantino made his name by spinning pop-culture trash into arthouse-approved gold, though he actually seems content with just the trash, as his checkered IMDB entry shows. Rivaling his stint as a celebrity judge on American Idol as the least distinguished entry on his résumé is his role as criminal video supplier Desmond Winocki on Margaret Cho's forgettable mid-'90s sitcom All-American Girl. Humbly recognizing that Pulp Fiction was a slightly more important cultural touchstone than All-American Girl, the show didn't bother integrating Tarantino into its well-worn family-sitcom fabric. Rather, the show tried to integrate itself to Tarantino, spinning off a series of lame references to his movies already picked over by every sketch-comedy troupe in the country. (The mysterious briefcase! The twist contest! The samurai sword!) All-American Girl lasted just one more episode.

Double check that TiVo: Miley Cyrus, Quentin Tarantino, JHud on 'Idol'

And then there were seven. And then they sang "Songs of the Cinema." Which may or may not encompass every song ever written.

Oddly enough, director Quentin Tarantino -- best known for directing blood-thirsty films like "Pulp Fiction" -- is coming to "American Idol" next week to shepherd our Final 7 through "Idols at the Movies" week.

Tarantino an "Idol" fan? Believe it or not, yes; he has actually appeared on the show before. Who do you think is his favorite Season-8-er? Since sly and sexy Uma Thurman is his muse, maybe Tarantino likes the subtle cool of Matt Giraud.

After Tarantino takes the stage on Tuesday, Jennifer Hudson will appear the following night. The Oscar-winning actress and "Idol"-alum will be joined on Wednesday by -- wait-for-it, wait-for-it -- Miss Miley Cyrus.

Thus, if you are attending the elimination show on Wednesday, be sure to bring earplugs. Tween screams have been known to edge into the whistle range when Cyrus enters a building. Don't say we didn't warn you.

Hudson will perform her new single, "If This Isn't Love," and Cyrus will sing a song called "The Climb," from the upcoming "Hannah Montana: The Movie."

Quentin Tarantino Talks The 'Casino Royale' Bond Movie He Wanted Pierce Brosnan For; Still Wants Credit For 2006 Reboot
Source: ThePlaylist

You've probably heard by now at one point in the aughts (circa 2004/2005) Quentin Tarantino was toying with the idea of directing a James Bond film and the 007/Ian Flemming story he wanted to tell was, "Casino Royale." As he puts it, on a recent appearance on the Jonathan Ross BBC show to promote, "Inglourious Basterds," the notoriously hands-on producers of that franchise thought the original novel was "unfilmable" and didn't want to make it (even though a satirical version was made in 1967 with Peter Sellers, David Niven and Woody Allen). But of course they eventually did reboot the series with Daniel Craig and it was obviously one of the best Bond films in almost decades (too bad about that "Quantum Solace" though).

Tarantino wanted Pierce Brosnan as his Bond, but as he told reporters in 2005, "Once I heard Brosnan isn't going to be doing any more Bond films, that killed it as far as I was concerned." In this BBC interview, the filmmaker says he was responsible for kick starting the re-interest in 'Royale,' and naturally, not all that humbly. "The reason they did 'Casino Royale' all comes down to me," he said pointedly. "But after I said it and talked about it, then all the big things on the Internets was that's what all the fans want to see. So that's when [the producers] said, 'Oh, maybe it's not so unfilmable now.' " He's not kidding either. In a 2007 interview the director said, "I resent that none of them gave me a shout out to recognize that I'm the one who got them to make 'Casino Royale'." We're probably all better Quentin did bother, no?

Quentin Tarantino saves L.A. theater
Filmmaker now serving as landlord of New Beverly Cinema
Source: Hollywood Reporter

The purchase, though, was not a smooth process. According to Torgan, the original landlord and prospective buyer moved to block Tarantino's bid. The sides haggled for months, but eventually a deal paved the way for a buyout. (A nondisclosure agreement prevents the Torgans or Tarantino from revealing the purchase price or the identity of the former landlord.)

Tarantino is now the owner, but he allows Michael and his family to run the theater's daily operations -- with his occasional input.

"Quentin couldn't be a better landlord," Torgan said. "He's involved with suggesting movies when he likes, but he lets us do most of the booking."

Tarantino recently organized an Angela Mao kung fu night featuring "Return of the Tiger" and "Stoner" as well as an "all blood" night with "Blood Spattered Bride" and "Asylum of Blood."

"I can make programming suggestions when I want to," Tarantino said. "It is cool to have a theater that I can use to show what I like."

Tarantino held his "Inglourious Bastards" DVD screening event at the New Beverly. And he will welcome guest programmer Jason Reitman, a pal from this year's awards circuit, to the theater Friday for six days of Reitman's favorites.

Since taking over the property, Tarantino has made it possible for the New Beverly to undergo some badly needed renovations such as new light fixtures and seats and a digital projection system. But he doesn't want the place to change too much. The 35mm projector is still the preferred screening method, popcorn and sodas remain cheap -- and the Torgans are still in charge, with an Oscar-winning angel over their shoulder.

"As long as I'm alive, and as long as I'm rich, the New Beverly will be there, showing double features in 35mm," Tarantino said.

more on this very nice story:

QUENTIN TARANTINO has stepped in to save a Los Angeles movie house from closure - he's agreed to buy the cinema to keep it in business.

The Hollywood director has been watching films at the New Beverly Cinema since he was a teenager and several years ago he was devastated when he learned the family business was suffering financial difficulties.

He contacted the manager, Sherman Torgan, and offered to give the movie theatre $5,000 (£3,125) a month to keep the business running.

He tells Reuters, "It was going to be turned into a Super Cuts (hair salon). I'd been coming to the New Beverly ever since I was old enough to drive there from the South Bay - since about 1982. So, I couldn't let that happen.

"Since I'm a print collector and I screen movies at my home, I heard from other collectors and projectionists that Sherman might have to close down. So, I just started paying him ($5,000) per month. I considered it a contribution to cinema."

But after Torgan passed away in 2007, the landlord who rented the space to the family was determined to sell up and Torgan's son Michael contacted Tarantino - who stepped and bought the building in a bid to keep his beloved cinema open.

Tarantino adds, "I always considered the New Beverly my charity - an investment I never wanted back. I already had a good relationship with the family and the theatre, so it was a natural step (to buy the cinema). It is cool to have a theatre that I can use to show what I like. As long as I'm alive, and as long as I'm rich, the New Beverly will be there, showing double features in 35mm."

Yes of course, obviously better late than never.  Though you should know you've already missed his own Grindhouse month, a full month of Grindhouse double-features he hosted at the theater before he even owned the building, around the time Grindhouse was released, and also two-week events hosted by Edgar Wright, Eli Roth, Joe Dante (2x), Seth Green, Patton Oswalt, Peter Bogdanovich, and Diablo Cody.

And Peter Bogdanovich lives in QT's guest house.

The InSmurfious Basterds
You'll never guess who is said to be voicing Brainy Smurf.
Source: IGN

Turns out that Brainy Smurf is quite a Basterd.

MTV spoke with actor Alan Cumming, who is voicing one of the diminutive blue characters in the upcoming Smurfs movie, says that Inglourious Basters filmmaker Quentin Tarantino has been tapped to voice Brainy Smurf in the 3D hybrid live-action/CG animation film.

The voice cast includes Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, singer Katy Perry as Smurfette, George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf, and Neil Patrick Harris as the human protagonist of the Raja Gosnell-directed film.

And what of the Smurfs' villain? "Gargamel, I'm not sure [if I can say]," Cumming told MTV. "They're still negotiating with someone that would be fabulous."

Tarantino to chair jury at Venice film festival

ROME (Reuters) - U.S. director Quentin Tarantino will chair the jury handing out the coveted Golden Lion award at this year's Venice film festival, organizers said Thursday.

The Oscar-winning 47-year old author of "Reservoir Dogs," "Pulp Fiction" and more recently "Inglourious Basterds" was described in a statement as "one of the most startling directors in cinema today."

"He is perhaps the only American auteur to be adored worldwide like a rock star," organizers said.

The festival runs from Sept 1-11.

Quentin Tarantino Friars Roast rescheduled
Source: The Hollywood Reporter

NEW YORK -- The Friars Club Roast of director, writer, producer and actor Quentin Tarantino, which was postponed due to the death of his close friend and editor Sally Menke, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 1.

As originally planned, the event will take place at the New York Hilton with Samuel L. Jackson acting as "roastmaster," a spokesman said.

A lineup of roasters and guests will be announced shortly.

The Friars Foundation is also naming a scholarship to honor Menke's memory that will go to a student "with a passion to study the performing arts and carry out the Foundation's mission of fostering the arts through scholarships," the Friars Club said in a statement.

"With Quentin's enthusiasm, this Roast is destined to be one of the most exciting and outrageous ever," said Friars Club executive director Michael Gyure.

Said Jackson: "Having known Quentin as long as I have now, there are many stories I've kept tucked away for a moment like this. I'm not so sure he won't regret asking me once the afternoon is over!"

Tarantino Sues -- Exotic Birds Are Driving Me INSANE

3/10/2011 6:43 PM PST by TMZ Staff

Quentin Tarantino is going to WAR with his famous neighbor -- claiming the guy owns a ton of exotic birds that constantly emit "blood-curdling screams" ... and it's affecting Q's ability to write scripts!

Ironically, the guy Tarantino is feuding with is another Academy Award winning writer -- Alan Ball -- the guy who wrote "American Beauty" and created "True Blood."

According to Quentin's lawsuit, filed today in L.A. County Superior Court, Tarantino claims ever since Ball installed an "exotic bird menagerie" -- Quentin has been forced to endure the "obnoxious pteradactyl-like screams" of the macaw birds.

In fact, Q claims the noise has "seriously disrupted [his] ability to work as a writer in his home."

Tarantino says he tried to amicably resolve the matter with Ball -- but Alan has "done little to eliminate the macaws' daily cacophony" ... so he wants the judge to force Ball to silence them once and for all.

They missed the perfect opportunity to use the word "macawcophony."

they should just settle it with an Oscar swordfight. QT would win though, you know he fights dirty.

it's not my dream culture but i'd only be expressing first-world movie frustrations

I love that Fury Road is already on the repertory circuit. My dream is it will start playing at midnight in NYC regularly and soon.

I'm still thinking about that movie. Nothing else compares this year. I assume Tarantino loved it, but I haven't found any comments from him in the press about it.

so, Hateful Eight ran at the New Bev for two months. i supported this decision, as it was his decision to make. the first month just Hateful Eight, then a month of Hateful Eight as a double-feature. at QT's theater, in 35mm, mostly roadshow except at midnight. there were something like ninety chances for people to see the movie there. i didn't go but i liked the sound of it.

this month the gates are back open so i'm extra excited about, for example:

my emotions classify my interests in seeing Dark Age as high-level, i've seen Alligator as a midnighter, and this here is a creature feature bond between the US and Australia

i had never seen The Mack, maybe because i hadn't seen that poster before, maybe because it hadn't played as a double-feature with Taxi Driver before.

there are two cinematic shots between Travis Bickle and black people in Taxi Driver: one inside the cafe at a table, one on the sidewalk in passing. these shots are poetic expressions of a mindset that isn't discussed in this movie. evidence for the function of these shots is provided by their form. which is totally true about all of Taxi Driver, which movie i adore as much as i can adore movies.

those two shots are explained in The Mack. the thematic cohesion between these movies is such a QT touch. The Mack is a wonderful blending of both movie and social culture:

QuotePimp: "Hey, I don't hafta take this! I'm a rich nigga! I thought you paid these pooh-butts off! You beat walkin' motherfuckers!"
^when someone lays it down. i like a line like this because it adds to the exposition without talking to the audience. that's clearly a pimp talking to a cop for private reasons.

there's an even better conversational exchange with dynamic living textures, but it's not in the imdb quotes section. The Mack is vibrant in all sorts of ways, related to money and power, life and narrative, and i'm both glad i saw it and how i did.

i skipped Darling Lili and Fraulein Doktor to come home and write, so now i'll probably never see those movies. damn.

i barely knew anything about When Women Had Tails // When Women Lost Their Tails before i went in.

but, while standing outside before the movie, my friend mentioned to me that it's set around cavemen and Italian. literally hadn't read anything about this movie, i'd been imagining an American western.

there are pros and cons to learning about a movie before you see it, in my opinion. related to life being about discovery or understanding. but so, Italian comedies are outrageous, you know, and for example i'm not today a fan of My Name Is Nobody, but i am a fan of Four Times that Night, so it depends. i busted out my phone and went to imdb to look into things, upon hearing it's Italian.

its record was clean, real clean. the director of both movies, '70 and '72, was Pasquale Festa Campanile, who was one of the writers for The Leopard and Rocco and His Brothers. both which movies had multiple writers and all crew members have a long track record. the dp for Had Tails shot Four Flies on Grey Velvet and Il Postino. the dp for Lost Tails started his career around Aldrich's Sodom and Gomorrah, worked with Corbucci for Navajo Joe and The Great Silence, has 80 titles in his credits. one of the writers for Had Tails is Lina Wertmüller, who was the first woman nominated for best director at the Oscars. later Ennio Morricone's name will appear in both opening credits.

both the movies were dubbed, which was helpful in this case. the Italians. pfwew. multitudinous is actually greatly expressed in their comedic style. you have to be prepared to accept that absolutely anything might be funny. both Tails made me laugh while reflecting upon death. but through their comedy they each operated aware of tragedy. except on top of that in Lost Tails a guy's personal physical problem is he ends up existing as only his head.

it'd take me two, three paragraphs to describe everything about Tails. i'll give a personal summary instead. for Lost Tails other friends had arrived. five of us sat in the front row and experienced Italian prehistoric comedy with open eyes and open hearts, afterward discussing the surprising and unexpected ways the movie made us feel and think. i'll remember the night and the movies until i die, trashculturemutantjunkie from the inside.
