Title: Nic Cage - NEVER afraid to go over the edge
Post by: modage on June 06, 2003, 03:28:53 PM
i love Nic Cage.  he rules.  he is never afraid to go TOO FAR and throughout his career he has done so on several occasions.  i would just like to point out a few performances of special interest to me.

VAMPIRES KISS this is one of the unintentionally funniest movies ive seen, maybe ever.  mainly what sticks out about this movie is Nics performance. priceless.  his diatribe to his therapist where he proceeds to go through the entire alphabet while signaling different hand movements is rolling on the ground funny!  you can practically see him rehearsing this in the mirror the night before (which in the commentary track he confesses to doing so).  the sadistic relationship with his secretary is what pretty much makes this hilarious all the way through.

RAISING ARIZONA  umm. everyone who has seen this movie, knows the genius of cage.  we have a coen thread, so i dont need to describe this one.

LEAVING LAS VEGAS this movie is so sad, that if in the proper state of intoxication yourself it also can turn into quite a funny movie.  my girlfriend once caught about half of it on cable and described it as "hilarious".

PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED uhh, a small part, but another example of his wild experimentation in the 80s and willingness to pretty much try anything with a character.  he has even recently confessed to a "what was i thinking?" attitude.  (he says he "thought he was a method actor".)

CON AIR "Put the bunny in the box" (southern accent).  i dont think i need to say any more.

KISS OF DEATH another small part, in this godawful remake with a Uge cast.  but he is pretty funny as"Little Junior Brown, a violent and powerful villain"

FACE OFF tell me you DIDNT love cage doing travolta? travolta doing cage?  the movie  may not be your cup of tea, but the acting is worth the price of admission.

ADAPTATION cant believe i almost forgot about this one.  what could be better for a cage lover than this. the pinnacle of all cage performances as 2 hilarious and completely different brothers.  even if the 3rd act didnt work for you, the banter between the brothers was certainly a highlight of every scene they were in together. *edit added

no no im not saying he wasnt great in lots of other movies.  i was just trying to name a few where he was especially OVER THE TOP.  he was a little more subdued in BRINGING OUT THE DEAD and WILD AT HEART and tons of other flicks.

How can you forget Adaptation?!?!

If any movie solidifies Cage's acceptance as a great actor it's Adaptation. And this is coming from not-so-big Cage fan.

'Never afraid to go over the edge' describes him perfectly. In Vampires Kiss he actually ate that cockroach. Ew.

Great noir movie. In the same vein as "Blood Simple".

I used to LOVE Cage...up until somewhere around Snake Eyes, at which point it seemed clear he was just stuck in a making-money rut, with no interest in the creativity that once fueled his performances. Bringing Out The Dead was a return to form, but it was quickly overshadowed by the mind numbing vapidity of Gone In 60 Seconds, the sentimental syrup of Captain Correlli's Mandolin, and Windtalkers, which I didn't see more than twenty minutes of. Adaptation was brilliant, but I'm still trepidatious about any new movies with him in it...Matchstick Men could go either way, judging from the trailer. And now he's starring in some video game movie, the synopsis of which didn't exactly grab my attention.

Did anyone see Sonny?

Nicolas Cage Starring in Dead to Rights

Nicolas Cage will star in an adaptation of the Dead to Rights video game, says Variety. Lorenzo di Bonaventura will produce the film with Cage and his Saturn Pictures partner Norm Golightly, and they will begin pitching the project to studios immediately. Screenwriter Kevin Brodbin (Constantine) will make the pitch and likely write the script.

Cage will play Jack Slate, a disgraced cop who is hell-bent on discovering who murdered his father. The film is designed to have the Hong Kong-style action that has made the game so popular. The game's rights are controlled by Namco.

A sequel game is being produced for Christmas 2004 for the PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube formats.

"The videogame is so compelling because it has so many rich elements and the trick is to cut them down and get to the core story," said di Bonaventura. "The central character is emotionally tortured and that always makes for a good movie and a good Nic Cage movie."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nicolas Cage Revs-Up RPM

Nicolas Cage will reteam with his Con Air director Simon West (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) on the high-octane action-thriller RPM at Columbia Pictures.

The film, written by Joel Wyman, revolves around a Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid-like pair of outlaws who are among racers tooling around in Maseratis, Aston-Martins, Lamborghinis and Ferraris. The underground race takes place in London, Monaco, Paris and Germany.

RPM is scheduled to start production mid-August in Italy.

I've liked Nic Cage in some movies, but he is vastly overrated. For some reason, a lot of people just like acting that is over the edge. I can definitely sense that here. It can be fine and all when right for the role, but it feels like people give so much more importance when someone starts yelling or going nuts and they think he/she is doing something exemplary. Actually, for today, this has just become the typical and the over acting never really was that hard for most actors anyways. A lot of my friends are great at freaking out and if they could talk coherently in some smooth way, I could see room for them in some movies. Its just show and doesn't necessarily speak for someone losing their self in a character and acting for the purpose of just that character.

Nicolas Cage Set for Boxing Coach Biopic
Source: The Hollywood Reporter

Nicolas Cage is set to go behind bars as a boxing coach in a fact-based feature being developed by his production company.

The story revolves around Louisiana native Billy "The Kid" Roth, a former champion fighter who has volunteered for more than 44 years in Louisiana prisons, serving as a surrogate father to hundreds of inmates whom he taught to box.

His life has already been depicted in the documentary project called The Dance -- The Billy Roth Story, whose producers will partner with Cage's Saturn Film on the feature.

Cage's NEXT Project
Lee Tamahori will direct the action-thriller based on a story from sci-fi writer Philip K. Dick.

Oscar winner Nicolas Cage and action helmer Lee Tamahori are teaming up for their Next project. Cage will star in and produce and Tamahori will direct Next, an action-thriller based on the Philip K. Dick story "The Golden Man." Cage will produce with partner Norm Golightly through the pair's Saturn Films, with shooting likely to get underway next summer.

Gary Goldman, who'll serve as an executive producer on the project, will adapt the script from "Golden." Cage will star as a man with the ability to see the future and change events before they happen. He comes to regret his power, however, when he's forced to choose between saving himself or saving the world.

Goldman will executive produce with Jason Koornick, who holds the rights to the Dick story. At Revolution, Derek Dauchy will be overseeing the project.

Cage, Smith book trip to 'Time Share'
Source: Hollywood Reporter

Nicolas Cage and Will Smith are attached to star in and produce "Time Share," a comedy pitch by Mark Steilen that was picked up by Columbia Pictures.

"Time Share" follows two fathers who lock horns when they discover their families are booked into the same time share on what should have been their dream vacation.

Sources said Steilen's deal was in the range of $875,000 against $1.5 million.

The film will be produced by Cage and Norm Golightly via Saturn Films, Smith and James Lassiter through Overbrook Entertainment as well as John J. Strauss and Eric Tannenbaum.

Strauss and Tannenbaum developed the project with Steilen. They took it to Cage and Golightly at Saturn. Cage had been itching to do a project with Smith, and the two quickly fell for the idea. The package was then delivered to Columbia.

Nicolas Cage gives Superman's birth name to son
Mon Oct 3, 7:39 PM ET

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Oscar-winning actor
Nicolas Cage's wife of 14 months gave birth on Monday to the couple's first child together, a son they named Kal-el -- a moniker recognized by comic book fans as the birth name of Superman.

The child's delivery in New York City and his full name, Kal-el Coppola Cage, were confirmed by the actor's publicist, Annett Wolf, who said of the family, "They are healthy and happy and it's quite lovely."

No further details were released, including how the actor and his wife, Alice Kim Cage, were inspired to borrow from the mythology of Superman in naming their child.

Cage is known as an avid comic book devotee who once sold his personal collection, including a copy of Superman's 1938 pulp debut, at auction for more than $1.6 million.

The nephew of famed filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, the actor adopted his own stage surname from the Marvel Comics superhero Luke Cage.

Cage also was at one time slated to star in a Superman movie under the direction of Tim Burton, a project that ultimately was scrapped and replaced by a newer Warner Bros. remake expected for release next summer.

The 41-year-old actor and his wife, a former sushi waitress about 20 years his junior, met at a nightclub last year before marrying on July 30, 2004.

Cage has a 15-year-old son, Weston, by a prior relationship with actress Kristina Fulton. His previous marriages to actress Patricia Arquette and singer Lisa Marie Presley ended in divorce. Kal-el is his current wife's first child.

The prolific performer won an Academy Award as best actor for his 1995 role as an alcoholic bent on suicide in "Leaving Las Vegas." In his latest film, "Lord of War," he portrays an arms dealer.

They aren't just accepting a role in a bad movie, which every actor/actress does at some point, but they're funding it, too?

Next Up
Nic Cage movie starts filming.

Revolution Studios has announced the commencement of principal photography in Los Angeles on their new film, Next. The Gary Goldman-scripted sci-fi action thriller is based on Philip K. Dick's story The Golden Man.

Nicolas Cage, Julianne Moore and Jessica Biel star for director Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day).

Columbia Pictures will release the film in 2007. Cage is also producing Next through his Saturn Films banner.

In Next, Cage plays a man with the unique ability to see future events and affect their outcome. Relentlessly pursued by the FBI, which is seeking to use his abilities to prevent a global terrorist threat, he is ultimately faced with the daunting choice of saving the world or the woman he loves.

Cage has One Night in Bangkok
Source: Moviehole

The guy who brings the best presents to the Coppola Family Christmas Dinner every year, has signed to star as grizzled hit-man in a remake of a gritty Thai thriller from a few moons back.

According to Variety, Nicolas Cage is attached to "Bangkok Dangerous" – which will be helmed by the original's directors, Oxide Pang Chun and Danny Pang – playing a cold-blooded hit man who heads to Bangkok to pull off four jobs, and winds up falling in love with a local girl and bonding with his errand boy.

That's the risk trying to be your generation's Steve McQueen. Cage's ego problem isn't the same as McQueen's in eliciting specific projects be developed and catered for starring, but Cage's problem is that there are so many roles available in the mold of a Steve McQueen action film that he doesn't say no often enough. McQueen also worked with better talent in making a lot of films, but he's overpraised nonetheless.

Of course he is like McQueen. No action star today besides Cage carries his celebrity synonymously with the appreciation of cars the way Steve McQueen does. My friends quote Gone in Sixty Seconds and Nic Cage the way my dad quotes Bullitt and Steve McQueen. Cage even boasts of his hate of cars (he has an extensive collection) and his admiration of Steve McQueen. Plus, their usual even keel temper in action movies fall on similar notes. The difference is that Cage's characters sometimes have random outbursts of emotion in a strenuous situation.

C'mon Mod, you of all people don't have to give me this asshole tone. Yes, all past references have a limited place of accuracy. Its just making an effort to use them is trying to be more insightful than just agreeing or disagreeing. And all your post is really doing is just calling me out on that without saying why.

Brokeback Piano: Nicolas Cage Headlines Liberace
Source: TMZ.com

EXCLUSIVE: Nicolas Cage is not leaving Las Vegas; indeed, he's coming back to it, starring in a new biopic about the life of that gold lame luminary, Liberace. What's more, Cage is producing the project as well, via his Saturn Films production company, based on a script by Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg.

Friedberg and Seltzer are best known for the campy pop culture-derived hits "Scary Movie" and more recently, "Date Movie," but their look at Liberace's life is understood to be far more serious. And while the duo might seem to be the last choice for a serious biography, the deal kind of makes sense to us: Who, after all, was better at distilling highbrow classics into pop culture than Liberace himself?

Born Wladziu Valentino Liberace, the pianist's rise to fame began in the 1950s, when his musical TV show (featuring his brother George leading the band) competed with and often bested "I Love Lucy" for ratings. He'd go on to sell millions of records -- over 2 million in 1953 alone.

But was as a live performer that Liberace truly made his mark: As a headliner in Vegas, he had no equal, making $55,000 a week playing at the Riviera nightclub. By 1972, he was earning $300,000 a week, and was only finally dethroned by Elvis. (He reclaimed his mantle as Vegas' highest paid performer after the King's death.)

Liberace's own death, from AIDS, remains perhaps the most tragic and defining aspect of his life as an artist. Despite his status as a gay icon, Liberace always flatly denied that he was homosexual (Most poignantly, his publicist attributed his weight loss in his final months as being caused by a "watermelon diet.") and it's Liberace's worst-kept-secret of a double-life that the project is expected to focus on.

In the early 80s, Liberace's live-in lover Scott Thorson sued him for $113 million in "palimony" after they parted ways, and it is that suit - ultimately dismissed - that insiders say will be used as the starting point to introduce audiences to the secret that vexed Liberace for his entire adult life.

No studio is as yet attached, though Cage is said to be meeting with directors in the weeks to come, and is said to want to go before cameras as early as October of this year.

Nicolas Cage in Bangkok to film Pang brothers movie

BANGKOK (AFP) - Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage has arrived in Bangkok to film his latest movie with the Pang brothers, the renowned Hong Kong-born directing duo, a spokesman for the project said.

The movie "Big Hit in Bangkok" is a remake of Danny and Oxide Pang's own 1999 gangster thriller "Bangkok Dangerous", and is being shot entirely in Thailand.

"Cage is currently in Bangkok and will stay here for about three months to shoot this movie in Bangkok and a few other provinces in Thailand," Poj Charlermpong, a spokesman for Living Film Entertainment Thailand, told AFP.

In the movie, Cage plays a hitman who falls for a Thai woman and gives up his life of crime. In the original version, the hitman was a mute, but Cage's character will speak in the remake.

American-born Thai soap actor Chakrit Yamnam will also star in the movie, Poj said.

The Pang brothers were born in Hong Kong but enjoyed early success in Thailand. Among their other credits is the horror film "The Eyes".

"Big Hit in Bangkok" was among 291 foreign movies that won approval to film in Thailand during the first seven months of the year.

The films are collectively expected to bring 1.8 billion baht (49 million dollars) to Thailand, a total that is up 85 percent over the same period of 2005, according to Thailand's Film Office.

When he punches that girl in the bear suit, I lost it. If those are the best scenes, then I don't know if sitting through the whole film would be worthwhile, except maybe to see how awful it is...but man, everything in that clip is solid gold!

I honestly think if they had just gone ahead and advertised it that way, it would have made more money.  I'm certainly much more curious about the film now, and if I ever see it, it'll definitely be because of what I saw in this video, and not what I saw in the trailer.

Either Labute was on crack the whole time, or was fully aware of how fucking awful this film was and just ran with it.

The problem is that LaBute believed in the quality of the original. The remake is pretty faithful, but the difference is that the context of the character's action in the original is explained in that he is a religious zealous and so the audience takes his character with a grain of salt. When he attacks commoners, he does so out of desperation and conviction. Parts were laughable, but not as bad as the remake. Nicolas Cage reminded me of Sam Spade in The Wicker Man - overblown ego and overblown machismo that was there for no point. I found portions of the Maltese Falcon funny because it was trying so hard to make Humphrey Bogart a leading man star with such a cocky character, but LaBute should have known better when approaching this movie.

Cage seeks out 'The Vanished'
Actor to star in Focus Features drama
Source: Variety

Nicolas Cage will star in "The Vanished" for Focus Features.

Pic marks the studio helming debut of Hany Abu-Assad, the Palestinian-born director of "Paradise Now."

Thriller, penned by Larysa Kondracki and Eilis Kirwan, concerns a father who goes in search of his college-aged American-born Muslim son, who's missing overseas.

Movie will be produced by Noah Rosen and David Alpert of Circle of Confusion and Tracy Seward. Production is scheduled for the spring.

Abu-Assad drew acclaim for "Paradise Now," an Oscar-nominated 2005 film about two Palestinian youths drafted to become suicide bombers.

Cage first plans to star for director Darren Aronofsky in indie drama "The Wrestler" in January. He jumps right into "The Vanished" in April. Thesp most recently wrapped a remake of "Bangkok Dangerous," as well as the sequel "National Treasure: Book of Secrets," which Disney opens Dec. 21.

Nicolas Cage is a 'Kick-Ass' ex-cop
Aaron Johnson, Lyndsy Fonseca also set to star in film
Source: Hollywood Reporter

Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson and Lyndsy Fonseca are set to star in "Kick-Ass," Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of the violent Mark Millar comic book.

Written by Millar and drawn by John Romita Jr., the Marvel Comics' Icon imprint book centers on a high school dweeb named Dave Lizewski who decides to become a superhero even though he has no athletic ability or coordination. Things change when he eventually runs into real bad guys with real weapons.

Johnson plays the dweeb and title character, while Fonseca plays the object of the teen's infatuation who believes Dave is gay. Cage is a former cop who wants to bring down a druglord and has trained his daughter (Chloe Moretz) to be a lethal weapon.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse is also in the cast.

Vaughn and his Marv Films partner Kris Thykier are producing the feature, which is being financed independently as many studios balked at the bloody nature of the project. David Reed is also producing.

A fall shoot in London and Toronto is planned.

Brit actor Johnson had a blink-and-you-missed-it cameo as a kiddie Charlie Chaplin in "Shanghai Knights." He went on to star in "The Thief Lord" and is one of the stars of "Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging." He is repped by WMA and Principal Entertainment.

Fonseca, repped by Gersh and Sager Management, is known for her work in TV's "Big Love" as well as "Desperate Housewives" and "How I Met Your Mother."

Nic Cage's Superman Finally Revealed?
Video purports to show star as Tim Burton's would-be Man of Steel.

Ever wonder what Nicolas Cage would have looked like had he played Superman in the late 1990s movie Superman Lives? That was the scrapped version that would have been directed by Tim Burton from a screenplay by Kevin Smith (and rewritten by Wesley Strick) and produced by Jon Peters.

Cage's casting as the last son of Krypton caused as much of a stir amongst fanboys as Michael Keaton's had when he won the title role in Burton's Batman. Filming on Superman Lives was to have begun in 1998 in Pittsburgh, but Warner Bros. ultimately put the project on hold due to its ballooning budget. Both Cage and Burton eventually dropped out of the project, but not after concept art and costume designs were made. And after years in-development and millions spent, Warners would ultimately scrap the entire "Death of Superman" storyline, jettison Peters as the picture's producer, and take a whole new approach with 2006's Superman Returns.

Mania points out this video at TimBurton.jp (also available at YouTube) that purports to show a costume test of Cage in the redesigned Superman suit. Cage sports long black hair, a la the hairstyle worn by Superman after his rebirth in the comics. A screen cap from the video can be seen above.

We Knew It! Nicolas Cage is Everyone!
Source: Cinematical

I've seen him as Big Daddy in Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass. I know he's starring alongside Ron Perlman and Christopher Lee in Season of the Witch. I'm aware that he'll be re-teaming with producer Jerry Bruckheimer for Disney's The Sorceror's Apprentice.

What I didn't know is that Nicolas Cage can be everyone. EVERYONE. The Penguin, Perez Hilton, Zac Efron, Hulk Hogan, Gandalf, Pamela Anderson -- the list goes on and on, and over at NicCageAsEveryone (http://niccageaseveryone.blogspot.com/) you can see it for yourself.

Years ago, I read a Movieline interview with Quentin Tarantino where the director named Cage as the best actor of Tarantino's generation. This was right around the time of Cage's Oscar-winning role in Leaving Las Vegas, long before Cage showed us a different kind of range by hamming it up in Ghost Rider or sleepwalking through Bangkok Dangerous.

Could Tarantino have been right about Nicolas Cage or is this just one blog's attempt to use photoshop to hilarious (and sometimes unsettling) effect? I think the truth lies somewhere in between. Check out some of our favorite images below ...

For me, the music makes it perfect. I'm a little bored of the general Nicolas Cage rant. Most of his unintentional hilarity is funny for a day, but the music makes me think I am watching a weird opera of Nicolas Cage freak outs. The editing of the scenes to fit the music was pretty good too.

SPOILERS!

Saw Deadfall which is way worse than The Wicker Man. Cage steals the movie though, without him, I doubt this would even been made. Unfortunately he doesn't have that much screen time Id hope for because he gets sort french fried by the lead character. But his wig, phony nose and stache is hilarious. I don't laugh at him but laugh with him. I can really understand why David Lynch cast him in Wild At Heart.

Vampires Kiss is a little bit better but as strange as the other one. Deadfall is probably the 90s answer to Plane 9 from outer space. Cage sports a weird english accent which he only does when hes not going insane. The ABCDEF scene in particular is one particular moment. One particular thing I really liked is that Cages character hooks up with afro american hot women. Me likey.

Edit my keyboard is fucked, sorry.

Nic Cage's 'Worst Movie Ever' Arrives This Weekend

Nicholas Cage has starred in plenty of questionable Hollywood fodder. But, really, why is he starring in what apparently looks like a under-budget Uwe Boll video-game adaption? Season of the Witch, directed by Dominic Sena (Gone In Sixty Seconds) has bewildered Cage fans, critics and general audiences about the conceit of the title: what is it? A medieval action-adventure? A comedy reedited as a thriller? An elaborate trick on the American moviegoing population? Gawker's Max Read condensed the general sentiment nicely: "I can never remember if I am supposed to like Nicolas Cage sincerely and enjoy his movies ironically, or like him ironically and not enjoy his movies at all?"

Nearly all reviewers can't figure that out either. Nevertheless, for those insistent on seeing this movie, here's five reasons that--if you squint hard--can be seen as arguments in favor of paying to see Season of the Witch in theaters:

1. It Appears To Use Leftover Sets From Monty Python and the Holy Grail  Sure, likening sets from a 2011 medieval action-adventure film to a 1970's British sketch comedy isn't exactly a ringing endorsement of Witch, and that's probably why The New York Post's Kyle Smith gave a scathing one-and-half star review to the Nicolas Cage flick. But look at it this way: fans of the "rickety rope bridge spanning a bottomless chasm" from Holy Grail will be delighted to know that a similar "rotting string of planks" makes a dubious appearance in the film. And, after squinting again, perhaps you'll read Smith's exhortation to "heed the timeless advice of its ancestor 'Holy Grail'--run away!" as merely recommending viewers to wait until the DVD arrives.

2. The Epitome of a Movie Both 'Overblown and Undercooked'  Because, really, haven't you wondered what both of those descriptors mean in film reviews? Season of the Witch appears to be a title uniquely suited to unravel the meaning of the terms "overblown" and "undercooked." Courtesy of Variety's Andrew Barker we learn that Witch is both "too inert for midnight-movie schadenfreudists, and not nearly competent enough for even the most forgiving of fantasy fans." Ah, well, that would appear to rule out point number 3:

3. It's 'Get Him to the Greek Meets Lord of the Rings Filtered Through Uwe Boll's Hack-Tastic Brain' Got that? Which means that, yes, this would appear to be a well-suited film to be watching on late-night TV. But movie reviewers seem to be shying away from agreeing "it's so bad that it's good," with Movies.com's Jen Yamato explicitly making that disclaimer in her assessment of the regrettable title. Still, "there are flying zombie monks! Uwe would be proud," Yamato quips.

4. 'The Screenplay Is Like a Transcription of a Dungeons and Dragons Session' "Better hope you make a high saving throw during the wolf attack in Wormwood Forest!," writes Flick Filosopher's MaryAnn Johanson, referencing the fantasy role-playing game. Unintentional Monty Python echoes also appear in Johnson's review: "The 'performances' are like clueless imitations of Monty Python by actors who don't understand comedy...Witch is, however, par for the course for director Dominic Sena (Whiteout, Swordfish), who seems incapable of making movies that aren't both unpleasantly preposterous and mind-numbingly boring."

5. This Is the Film That Inspired a Prominent Critic To Write 'Die, Monster, Die' In Response  Rolling Stone's Peter Travers, never one to mince his words, wrote a humorous evisceration of Witch that includes this notable conclusion: "Trust me, it's as bloodless as a starved vampire. Instead of a review, it deserves a stake in the heart. Die, monster, die."
