A documentary film investigating sex trafficking by Mimi Chakarova

The Price of Sex is a feature-length documentary about young Eastern European women who’ve been drawn into a netherworld of sex trafficking and abuse. Intimate, harrowing and revealing, it is a story told by the young women who were supposed to be silenced by shame, fear and violence. Photojournalist Mimi Chakarova, who grew up in Bulgaria, takes us on a personal investigative journey, exposing the shadowy world of sex trafficking from Eastern Europe to the Middle East and Western Europe. Filming undercover and gaining extraordinary access, Chakarova illuminates how even though some women escape to tell their stories, sex trafficking thrives.

I just ordered a copy of this doc from Women Make Movies. You have to call (1-800-343-5540 Monday-Friday, 9am to 5pm EST) and request a copy for home video use...only educational copies are listed on the website. Total is $36.95 shipped. Expensive, yeah, but this subject matter is rarely investigated in such an in-depth and fearless way, and it's the kind of thing I think is important to support.

Yeah...it's devastating. I've only watched half so far, it's kind of soul-crushing to take in all at once. Most disturbing is that almost all of the money donated to organizations that attempt to fight human trafficking in countries such as Moldova, Turkey, and Ukraine never reaches the victims, aids in rehabilitation, or goes towards sentencing the traffickers of these girls at all. It all stops at the first line of defense and just lines the pockets of corrupt politicians and policeman who do nothing to stop the trafficking from occurring and are many times even complicit in it. One girl interviewed recounted a night on which she tried to flag down a police officer from the back seat of her pimp's car for help. Her pimp talked to the officer in private, returned to the car, and then the cop got into the back seat and raped the girl over and over.

Another girl attempted to escape captivity by jumping from a three-story window. She woke up in the hospital with a broken pelvis, half-paralyzed, unable to feel anything below her waist. Before she could have surgery, her pimp came to the hospital and took her away, and then forced her to serve multiple clients a day even in her half-paralyzed state. She recalled defecating on herself over and over as clients used her.

It seems that efforts towards changing this will be for naught until the extremely high level of government and law enforcement corruption in these countries is solved.
