Title: Hip Hop
Post by: Jack Sparrow on April 27, 2003, 12:43:51 PM
I thought it was time to start a thread about hip hop. Although I'm not the expert I recall growing up watching Yo! Mtv raps at saturdays. Doctor Dre, Ed Lover and that other guy (forgot about his name, help me). I also remember during 91 to 93 (it was maybe longer) when Dr Dre and Ice Cube put out very very good albums.  I also remember Wu-Tang Clan's debut album but I was still caught up with the grunge thing. I also remember Bone thugs n harmony's tribute to the late Easy E (correct spelling?) "See you at tha crossroads". Watching Boyz N The Hood and feeling happy although it had a very sad ending. Buying Nas "It was written" in 96 and feeling happy. Nas is one of the few strong rappers. Discovering The Fugees just before when everything exploded for them. I remember watching that Aerosmith vs Run DMC video. I watched the "movie" Wild Style last night and felt happy. Anyone who feels the same as I do about hip hop (and rap)? Watching 2pac alive for the last time at the VMA's 96 (or was it 95?). I remember buying the Beastie Boys single "Pass the mic" (back in 93 and totally forgetting about everything else). Please, to those who love this music, I pass the mic. :)

simpler times.. i was happy also:

thinking that there was a dick shot in the video for People Everyday by Arrested Development and cracking up when the old dude starts scatting/bebopping/freaking out. wearing my pants backwards ONCE. house of pain jumping too and nearly falling through windows and shit. knowing as soon as i heard 3am Eternal that KLF were indeed too dope for this planet. Bel Biv Devoe. saying that i knew the definitive lyrics to Informer "ljglskfvlwrjkf a licky boom boom down". RUMPSHAKER, song of the year. Mo Money was my favourite movie and gave me a warm feeling. Be Like Mike. LL COOL J still kickin it man we played the shit out of Mama Said'. when R&B was good and me and my brother liked all the same music. Whoomp There It Is. Bobby Brown teaching me the word "prerogative". Heavy D and da boyzz, Sir Mix A Lot teaching me the finer points of the female anatomy. buying a cypress hill shirt which was too big and i would still wear years later when i finally knew why they were smoking. wishing with skee-lo that i was "a little bit taller" and that i was a baller. basketball, oh man, i was fit. NWA bein the hardest shit i knew.
listening to Ready to Die while playing my "Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis".. learning all the lyrics to 2pac's albums and changing my favourite song about once a week, "Hit Em Up" scaring my mom. conspiracy theories. haha ma$e.

then sumthing happened, and i got serious or sumthin stupit like that..

hearing the beat to At the Helm for the first time and bouncing bouncing bouncing, all the way to the freak i am today.

"I Used to Love H.E.R."

until around 95/96 i was exclusively hiphop, corny shit too, not much classic or highbrow shit. ppl were happier, simpsons/seinfeld were great and new, i swam, i didn't even hav a computer.. . i guess this is why mac remembers his 80s so fondly..

when i was a kid that was the only music i liked

till i was about 17 thats all i listened to.

During the 90's alternative music just blew past me, i couldnt give a shit about the smashing pumpkins or pearl jam, the only radio i liked was Rnb

as i got older i opened up.

The late 80's/early 90's were definitely hiphop's golden years.  Everything was lovely then.  Conscience hiphop was still alive and new styles were emerging.  You could still turn on the radio and hear good shit.  Now it's all bullshit.  You have to go deep underground to hear good stuff now.

remember:
Onyx
MOP
Paris
The EPMD breakup
Amerikkka's most wanted and Death Certificate
Fear of a Black Planet
Tribe
De La
The Chronic
Mobb Deep
The Juice soundtrack
Menace II Society soundtrack
Souls of Mischeif
Del the Funky Homosapien
Poor Righteous Teachers (rock dis funky joint)
Naughy By Nature
Brand Nubian (post Grand Puba)
Fu-Schnickens
Digable Planets
Shaq!!!!!!
KRS-ONE throwing PM Dawn off the stage
The Lost Boyz
Goodie Mob (soul food)
Outkast's first album
Casual
Bo$$
X-Clan
....the list goes on and on.  Shit man, this makes me wanna go home and bust out all my old cassettes.  I used to make crazy mix tapes from the underground hiphop show on our local community station.

I still think the trinity of hip hop emcees are Krs-One, Chuck D, and Rakim.  Can't nobody fuck with them!

hiphop was high school days for me, especially tupac. drivin around at night when we all turned 15 and got our driver's licenses, me thinking i was really cool because i knew every damn word to Bone's "If I could teach the world"--even the fast solo part at the end. there's nothing cooler than 4 skinny white kids bumpin to cypress hill in their mom's toyota camry. smokin blunts too.
now i'm in college and its all hippy shit. i miss it though.

I'm still young in getting into Hip hop, but ever since I did, I can tell how much more exciting it has become than rock. Even with the fact that hip hop now has become identified as the biggest advertising company for all things that supposebly make someone gangsta, hip hop screams new ways for innovation and electricity in music. I'm not sure if any band will come along in rock with the power of Nirvana. Its sad though hip hop has been put down to being condenced with bullshit artists and little quality overall, but life is good with just a group like OutKast.

Solid.  Let me know what you think.

For all the hip hop heads out there...have you heard any news on Rakim's new album?  I heard last year that he got signed to Aftermath and Dr. Dre is producing his album due out sometime this year.  "It's been a long time/ I shouldn't of left you..."

Aesop Rock is one of my favorites, can't get enough of him. How about Atmosphere (slug), Sage Francis, pretty much the whole Chicago scene with the molemen, typical cats and everyone else. Anyone here heard of Robust? Supposedly he's coming out with a second album sometime in the near future, he showed me a track called poke smot months ago and it was one of the dopest hip hop songs i've ever heard, so pick that shit up if you ever find it on hiphopinfinity.

The two best rap songs ever written are "Turtle Power" by Partners in Kryme (from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III soundtrack) and "Spirit" by Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew (from the Ghostbusters II soundtrack)...hands down. In terms of lyrical brilliance and page to mic transition (actual preformance)...it is magic that rarely ever existed (or especially exists today) in hip hop.

Download these now.

The only other one that really blew me away was "Gangster's Paradise" by Coolio which is the best example of actual singing in a rap song. It is also beautiful and worth listening to over and over again.

For some reason, I like gangsta rap, like Dr. Dre, Snoop, and early 90's stuff like Naughty by Nature, it was really catchy. And Busta Rhymes was cool. But now, Afro Man rules. He's funny as hell.

mystikal jailed for six years

mystikal was sentenced to six years in prison yesterday (january 15) after he was found guilty of forcing his hair stylist to perform sex acts. the rapper - born michael tyler - pleaded guilty to sexual battery and was led from the courtroom in louisiana's baton rouge in handcuffs. the victim accused tyler and two bodyguards, leland 'pokie' ellis and vercy 'v' carter, of forcing her to perform the acts in his apartment in july 2002, after they claimed she had stolen $80,000. the victim denied she had stolen any money from the rapper. after watching a videotape the men had made during the incident, judge tony marabella said that the woman had been "terrorised". according to reports, judge marabella added: "the court is convinced that the defendant believes he is above the law and can take the law into his own hands." ellis was sentenced to three years in jail, while carter received four, after the pair also pleaded guilty to the sexual battery charge. tyler also pleaded guilty to extortion, and had earlier received five years probation on that charge. according to a letter in court records, the rapper has also paid the victim $350,000 - with $300,000 borrowed from his record label, jive. the money and his plea are said to show he is "continuing to try and make up to all involved for the distress" he caused. 'tarantula', mystikal's 2001 album, was nominated for best rap album at the 2003 grammy awards.

ahhhhh memories...

1988: 8 years old. Learned all the words to my first rap song. Bust a Move by young mc. Danced around to M.C. Hammer's can't touch this. Was told not to listen to NWA or 2 live crew.

1990: Ten years old. Briefly fell victim to the Vanilla Ice syndrome.

1991: Eleven. Briefly fell victim to the Kriss Kross syndrome.

1992: Twelve. Fell in love with a little album know as The Chronic. Favorite video of the year: Ice Cube's it was a good day. Saw Boyz n the Hood on video.

1993: Was first in line to buy Doggystyle.

1994: Started High school. Picked up the murder was the case soundtrack. Was introduced to a man named Biggy. Fell in love with a song called Dear Mama.

1995: Enter the Wu. Busta, Junior Mafia, Bone thugs, Warren G.

1996: All eyez on me. Got the shit beat out of me for being a "Wigga" in an all white Alabama high school. The kid who did it kills himself the next day. Went into a depression. Found other forms of music that suited my particular apathy better. Fell in love with movies.

1999: A blonde haired white boy from detroit rekindles my love for hip hop. I discover all the stuff I missed the first time around. Beastie Boys, Tribe, Public Enemy, etc.

Interesting quote from Steve Jobs:

"I'm trying to force myself to listen to more of the current stuff. I had never listened to hip-hop and had somehow developed a pretty harsh image of it. Now I'm not saying I like all of it, but I found some people that have something to say and are saying it, more than anyone since Dylan in the 1960s. And Dylan is my all-time favorite. I met him once. It was one of the high points of my life."

If Fiona Apple can put the entire title "When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts He Thinks Like a King; What He Knows Throws the Blows When He Goes to the Fight, and He'll Win the Whole Thing 'Fore He Enters the Ring - There's No Body to Batter When the Mind Is Your Might, So When You Go Solo, You Hold Your Own Hand and Remember That Depth Is the Greatest of Heights, and If You Know Where You Stand, Then You Know Where to Land, and If You Fall It Won't Matter Cuz You'll Know That You're Right" on her album cover, The Beasties can use Pubrick's suggestion.

I used to be into the normal stuff, Dre, Snoop, Tupac, Biggie, but then I heard the gravediggaz 6 feet deep. From there went on to listen to del and hiero. Hip hop is great. I'm not a big fan of 50 cent, tupac, eminem or that kind of stuff, it bores me and reaks of suburban white girl syndrome. I used to like outkast but I don't like anything they've done outside of the classic atliens. Aquemini was alright but couldn't compare to atliens. Everything is downhill from there.

One Person Stabbed at Vibe Awards Taping

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fus.news2.yimg.com%2Fus.yimg.com%2Fp%2Fap%2F20041116%2Fcapt.cacp10211160508.vibe_awards_cacp102.jpg&hash=b263d67ee89d6de48b5ffd70675ec87743561c21)

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - A fight broke out near the stage at the Vibe awards ceremony as rapper Snoop Dogg and producer Quincy Jones were preparing to honor Dr. Dre., and one person was stabbed, authorities and witnesses said.

Dozens of people sitting near the stage Monday inside a hangar at the Santa Monica airport began shoving each other as the show wound down about 7:30 p.m. News video showed chairs being thrown, punches flying, people chasing one another and some being restrained.

It was unclear if the stabbing preceded or followed the fight. The victim, a 26-year-old man, was taken to a hospital and was listed in stable condition.

No arrests were made.

Witness Frank Williams said Dr. Dre was involved in the brawl.

"I saw Dr. Dre fighting somebody," Williams told KCAL-TV. "I don't know if he was fighting back. But there was a guy taken out basically bloodied."

The Los Angeles Times, citing an unnamed associate of Dr. Dre, said the melee broke out as the acclaimed hip-hop producer was sitting at a front-row table waiting to receive the Vibe Legend Award. A man walked up to Dr. Dre's table and punched him, and Dr. Dre's bodyguards went after the man, the associate said.

Dr. Dre was about to join Jones and Snoop Dogg on stage to receive the award for his lifetime contributions to hip-hop. "Come on, your messing up my rap, man," Jones said.

Andrea Ferguson, employed by a public relations firm that worked with Vibe for the second annual awards ceremony, called the incident a "disruption" but declined to provide details. She added the show was allowed to continue but it was halted for about five minutes.

"My understanding is that it was somewhat chaotic in there," police Lt. Frank Fabrega said in a press conference following the fight.

About 1,000 people attended the event; some scurried for the exits when the melee began. The show was taped Monday and was expected to be broadcast on the UPN network Tuesday.

"It's really important that we don't take a negative incident like this and do away with the awards," Suge Knight told reporters.

Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and the late Tupac Shakur were among the artists signed to Knight's Death Row Records during its height in the early 1990s. After leaving the label, Dr. Dre started the highly successful Aftermath Records, which has signed stars including Eminem.

When Knight was released in 2001 from a five-year prison term for assault and weapons violations, Dr. Dre obtained a court order to keep Knight away from him, The Times said. It was unclear whether the order remained in effect Monday.

Snoop Dogg Sniffs Out Movie Deal

Rapper Snoop Dogg will star in and executive produce a feature based on his real-life experience as coach of his young son's football team.

20th Century Fox beat out several bidders, including Sony and Paramount, paying $1 million for the pitch titled "Coach Snoop."

"This film is about how I learned to be a good father through coaching," Snoop Dogg said. "It's also about life lessons learned on and off the field. But most importantly during the football season, if you aren't wearing a helmet, get the f--- away from me. Football first; everything else second."

Snoop Dogg (real name: Calvin Broadus) pioneered the gangsta rap genre in the early 1990s. He is currently No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with his hit tune "Drop It Like It's Hot," featuring ubiquitous producer Pharrell Williams. His feature credits include "Training Day," "Soul Plane" and "Starsky & Hutch."

David Hoberman, one of the producers, said the story was very inspirational.

"It's the story of what Snoop did himself. In his real life as in the movie, like any regular overworked father, he put aside his whole career to coach his kid's football team."

Post by: pete on August 26, 2005, 05:08:37 PM
I don't like this condescending middle-class shit he's trying to pull on hip hop.  I mean half of his songs involve traditional hip hop shittalking but from like a fully removed middleclass perspective, like he's just lecturing the rappers on how gangsta and bling bling they are and how much classier and more sophisticated he is.  and that polo shirt thing is wack.  it's not wack only from a marx class-struggle standpoint; it's also wack because you have to be pretty lame to use that as your angle (a rapper...who is preppie!)
no doubt his tracks are great but that's where he should stay.  his success I think is poisoning his contemporaries like talib kweli, who is now trying to adapt this laid-back middle class party animal persona that just doesn't fit him.  kanye's just too corny to not to be successful--songs about his mama, Jesus (and quoting Happy Gilmore FOR SERIOUS in that song too), college education...etc.  imagine a blues singer in the 40s making it big singing about how the other poor blues singers are just fronting and about his own personal middle class financial woes, or a country singer...etc.  I think he's misunderstood the fantasy aspect of the bling bling culture and then somehow evoked some type of xenophobia amongst all the white college kids--oh, I guess it's okay to laugh at the urban black youth's misery and aspirations and their backwards nonsense urban talk, 'cause the "normal" black folks are doing it too.
that's why man, eff this guy.

I disagree with your concept of Kanye, pete.

Kanye is doing something that really hasn't been done before in rap.  Rap now is dominated by hustlers and thug life, which in it of itself makes the African American community appear to be the dregs of society.  Kanye is showing a look at the perspective of "you don't have to be gangster, but you don't have to be a scholar." It's not positioning yourself in the middle, but more of being proud of who you are.  Kanye's lyrics don't always sync up, he changes his mind a lot.  We all do.  He's a very relatable, charismatic guy.  He's bringing fans to rap and hip hop, people that never thought they'd even try to like it.

Kanye's beats are original and catchy and his words are words that such a polarized youth could use.

The great thing about Kanye is that he demonstrates to the hip-hop community that you don't have to make yourself out to be a thug or pimp stereotype to be a rapper.  Popular rap has become such a parody of itself over the past 15 years that it becomes a revolutionary act for a bright, middle-class, normal guy to do it and become successful at it.

kanye is not he first person who has rapped about not being a thug, or against being a thug. and he's not the best person who's done it either, or is doing it. he is however, the most marketable this season.

ur right polkablues, the revolution is that now OTHER Middle Class black rappers can make it too. a success! no, pete was right. kanye is not indicative of much other than white assimilation. there is nothing remarkably "real" about what he is doing, his beats are great, so what, so were The Game's if u ignored the lyrics. in the arena of conscious rap, kanye is lowering the standards, that's the bottom line. that could be opinion, but as a non-white kid that's how i'm callin it.

Boom.  That's it.  The nail has been hit upon the head.  No, he's not the best in the world, but he's the one who hit the popular pocketbook.  As for "lowering the standards" of conscious rap, that's a little harsh, not to mention slapping labels onto his music that he never set out to live up to.  He's not Mos Def, and he's not trying to be Mos Def.  He just a guy who likes to make music.  He's the Pearl Jam of hip-hop.

I like to look at the positives... every time Kanye is on the radio equals one fewer opportunity to play a 50 Cent or Nelly song.

what do u mean the good word? de la soul came out a year before ATCQ. and KRS-ONE a year before that, and before that Eric B. and Rakim. depending on what positive hip hop (not necessarily rapping about ice cream) is, u can go all the way to the origin with Afrika Bambaata. i would even consider early Public Enemy as spreading the good word, spreading true hip hop. all before ATCQ.

actually hip hop has always been the good word, the question is when it became bullshizzle. ur confusing things when u say "mainstream".

Kanye's beats are original and catchy and his words are words that such a polarized youth could use.

that is a slightly patronizing view of hip hop and the listeners of hip hop.  most of the kids who listen to hip hop aren't really "polarized" just as kids who listen to smashin pumpkins don't all kill themselves.  kanye west may not be reinforcing the middle class's view of hip hop by playing into the stereotypes, but he's doing just as much (as demonstrated by your post and other posts like it) to reinforce it by telling his listeners: yep, there are thugged out whacked out ni***s out there alright, I've seen them, and BOY AM I GLAD TO BE WITH YOU GUYS.  And it's really annoying for the rest of the society to be making condescending comments like oh, look, it's not us discriminating against them, we are just judging a pop culture by taking it out of context.
non-gangsta rap have been around since Rapper's Delight.  Gangstar rap is stuff made by kids for the kids (who were mostly in gangs growing up--I mean that's the origin of hip hop from the Bronx), it's kids posturing and kids fantasizing.  Kids everywhere do it, but strangely society has made such a big deal out of persecuting these kids in da hood and it's ridiculous.  Don't Fred Durst and Linkin Park and Brian Adams and Connor O'Berst posture as well?  It's the nature of the youth-oriented pop culture.
You want to know how to make the "African American society" to not appears as the "dregs of the society"?  How about middle class white kids don't judge the entire society by the music videos they see on TV?  How about visiting that community?
have you heard of talib kweli?  mos def?  blackalicious?  mf doom?  aesop rock?  even dungeon family?  they are all rappers who don't offend your middle class sensibilities, but at the same time still cutting edge, with great lyrics, flow, and tracks.

Aesop Rock is EMO hip-hop.

I saw Talib Kweli when he opened for the Beastie Boys last fall, and he was great.  To bad not even 1/4 of the stadium was full.  I'll agree with Pete that all the mentioned acts don't play to your stereotypical Rap-Artist image.  I'd just like to ad Mr. Lif, RjD2, Deltron 3030, and of course the Beastie Boys among others.

I love Talib Kweli, Mos Def, BlackStar, MF Doom (moreover with Quasi Moto on Mad Villain), and especially Outkast.  They are all very talented and underappreciated... well, some get a lot of recognition, but not as much as worse acts.

I feel Kanye is bringing something new in... It's not better than what is out there, but it's certainly something newer, a bit refreshing, too.  It's less aggressive than most popular gangster rap, the beats are really nice, and I think he's doing a great job...

I'm still partial to older groups like A Tribe Called Quest and I absolutely adore De La Soul.

I love talib kweli to pieces but seriously, this new kanye west influence is making him all wack.  he's being ruined.  he's cool when he's just flowing his intelligent rhymes and criticizing the society all the while remaining almost romantically optimistic.  I really think he can be the next Bob Dylan like for real not just as a marketing gimmick, if he just stops worrying so much about what people call him and stop hanging out with Kanye West aka the devil.  He got branded as "conscious" very early on and it was kinda like a kiss of death for the rest of the world even though his tracks are just as hot as any of them out there and his rhymes are SOO TITE.  somehow he got clumped together with the neo-soul artists and now he's clinging onto Kanye for fame.
I don't think Aesop Rock is Emo hip hop.  Emo hip hop would be like handsome boy modeling school or something, rich with irony and stuff.

Rap mogul Suge Knight shot at Miami MTV awards party

By David Usborne, in New York
Published: 29 August 2005
The rap music world is once again contemplating the violence in its soul after the dramatic shooting of the recording mogul Marion "Suge" Knight at a celebrity-studded party in South Beach, Miami, hosted by the Grammy Award-winning artist Kanye West.

Police said that Mr Knight, who founded the pioneering label Death Row Records, was wounded in the leg. He was being treated in a Miami hospital last night in a stable condition. Surgery was planned for later yesterday.

The party, held on the eve of the annual MTV Music Video Awards scheduled for last night in Miami, dissolved in pandemonium when shots rang out, witnesses said. Screaming guests fled from the luxury Shore Club hotel close to the Atlantic Ocean.

Among those invited to the evening of celebration were the comedian Eddie Murphy and the actress Jessica Alba, but it was unclear if they were present when the shooting happened.

"I was in there and I heard a pop and ran out and got trampled," recalled Sonja Mauro, who was staying at the Shore Club for the weekend. She reported hearing the shot fired a little before 1am yesterday.

The heavy-set and bearded Mr Knight, 40, is an iconic figure in the American recording industry. Among his protégés in the early nineties were the rap stars Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur. But his career achievements have been marred by connections to the violence that has repeatedly rocked rap fans.

As far back as in 1992, Mr Knight was placed on probation after being convicted of assault and weapons charges. Then in 1996, he was sentenced to five years in prison after he and some of his associates, including Shakur, were caught on videotape assaulting a gang rival in a Las Vegas hotel. It was shortly afterwards that Shakur was gunned down and killed while driving in Las Vegas.

Some family members of the Notorious BIG, another murdered rap star, have in the past accused Mr Knight of involvement. But investigators have never offered any evidence to support the allegations. Notorious BIG was killed in 1997 one year after Shakur, rekindling rumours of bi-coastal war between rival rap gangs.

According to the MTV web site, six shots were fired at the club yesterday. The bullet that struck Mr Knight, whose record label is now also known as Tha Row, resulted in a fracture and he was due to undergo surgery in Miami's Mount Sinai Medical Centre later in the day.

The police in South Beach said that they had no suspects for the shooting. However, there was no word from the Knight camp.

Meanwhile, the awards show, one of the high points in the popular music calendar in the US, was scheduled to be broadcast as planned, despite the shooting.

Eminem was good pre-2002. As was Dre. Snoop was pretty good in the early 90s. Jay Z was great until he chose to collaberate with Linkin Park and R Kelly. Beastie Boys, Run DMC and Public Enemy are all classic. LL Cool J could've been classic if he quit 10 years earlier.

Eric B and Rakim are excellent, as are A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul.

Deltron 3030 and Del's solo stuff is brilliant. Busta's early stuff was grand too.

I'll agree with you about Eminem. If his last album was the Eminem show I would have said Eminem will go down as one of the greatest rappers of all time, but the fact that he released "Encore" was just horrible. It took any credibility Eminem had and made you forget about all the awesome beef battles he had.

Now about Dre, How can you say he isn't good anymore? When the guy isn't even around? His last album was the Chronic 2001 which was an AWESOME album. Look out for Detox until you make another decision about Dre.

Snoop, well...Snoop is the biggest sell out in hip hop. But hey who cares? I hate to admit it, but i liked the song he did with Justin Timberlake a year ago...that shit was hot!

Now onto Jay-z...

Anyone that hates Jay Z, has never heard "Reasonable Doubt." Also, I'm sick of people rippin on him because he collaberated with Linkin Park. Who fuckin cares? That album was hot! Now, don't get me wrong...
Jay does have alot of faults. I mean just look at all the lines he rips from Biggie and Tupac, and not to metion that horrible remake of the "Me and My girlfriend," entitled, "Bonnie and Clyde" off the Blueprint 2...

But Jay Z is as awesome of a rapper as you can get.

Beastie Boys, Run DMC and Public Enemy are all classic

Duh.

Snoop Dogg writing debut novel

The rapper swaps his mic for a pen

Snoop Dogg is currently hard at work writing his debut novel.

Due out in October, 'Love Don't Live Here No More', is the first book in a street-lit series which the rapper is planning to release.

The story follows a young man living a hard life in southern California, whilst struggling to make it in the world of hip-hop.

Published by Atria Books, the company's vice president and director of publicity Kathleen Schmidt, said: "Snoop, by nature of what he does, is a storyteller."

Speaking to The Book Standard, she added: "Books speak more to a female audience than does his music so these novels give him an opportunity to show, particularly his female fans, another side."

uhhh as someone who is involved with hiphop pretty deeply, i can safely say this album is horrible.

its very well produced and written and everything but to call this hiphop is an abomination.
incredibly disappointing. maad city stuff was fairly on point, this is basically just someone figuring out who gil scott heron is.

Well, there's always the possibility of ghostwriters, but saying he doesn't write any of his stuff just doesn't seem right.

Either way, I thought this album was really great.

I pretty much liked every track- whereas with GKMC, where I wasn't entirely into Backseat Freestyle and Poetic Justice. What's more impressive is that I was involved throughout the whole thing despite it's length, it didn't seem bloated and filler-y like a lot of other long albums. The production was very truly on point here- this is the kinda album that I've wanted hear for quite a while.
I've listened to it a few times now but it's only been out for like 2 days, so obviously my feelings towards the album will gradually change as the year continues.

My only disappointment was that the Colbert song didn't make it but then again, there probably wasn't an appropriate spot for it (upbeat closer would have been awesome though).

well for one i know wtf i'm talking about when it comes to this stuff and it's simply ridiculous for yall to question me at this point.

and two, you think you're gonna have somebody write your shit and want everyone to know about it? thats what ghostwriter means.

could easily go into the "now playing" thread but i think it's, like, new age-type related to this topic. 'cause so what happened is i told her about lamar's u, a non-xixax-member human, irl she was quiet (lol) after i recommended it, via texts, and later i asked her if she hated the song, she told me she hated the song a bit (lol), and right away i knew the problem was it isn't a mellow song and she's a mellow person (we have dissimilarities), butso she'd sent me another song, which when i listened to it i thought about how mellow it is and how mellow music makes people mellow, it can do that, and misery loves company and my favorite songs tend to be songs of misery, so if it's true you're a bit like your top-five friends, and i currently want to feel better, i obvs gotta think about my current favorite songs, and this is now one and i always like when i meet a person who gets me back into the mellow

That beat switch is bonkers but otherwise it's not doing much for me. The music video definitely elevates the track.

That Flying Lotus one is amazing though.

It's an interesting track considering the evolution of sound from AWAKEN and this being a production done with Fam & Ibra on production. And although a bit nihilistically joyous, it doesn't fall in line with the emo trend. Ludwig's guitar and drum instinctz have just come off Black Panther and the SNL performance feels like that, but this CDQ version works as a bop, is why I dig it. Young Thug'z on it! It's got replay value, as far as Carti'z Magnolia could run, imo. it's BTI lvl of banger (Hiro's longtake in Sweatpants is cited in this video, as well as Glover's Bonfire) with the rootz of ATL'z thematic sprinkles.

(gotta admit im sleepin on Gucci and spun all those yet, seems like something you gotta boom on car speakers or 5.1 after big dubz)
Title: Re: Hip Hop
Post by: Lottery on May 09, 2018, 02:59:53 AM
To clarify, I think the music is lesser than the message and the video. Without the video, the verses aren't of any real value (the trappy beat is pretty decent). Disjointedness and beat switches and stuff can be cool but both parts (trappy bit and joyous chorus) don't really add up to anything special. It seems like this track exists in tandem with the video, without it- it's pretty weak. I reckon a lot of buzz it's getting is based on the video alone. I'm reminded of that band OK Go.
The track he did on SNL didn't entirely win me over either, but the Pharrell/MJ vibe should make it a big hit.
Title: Re: Hip Hop
Post by: polkablues on May 09, 2018, 03:24:26 AM
I'm with you on that. Without the added context the video provides, there's really not much to the song itself. I don't think that minimizes it in any way; it certainly seems like an intentional creative choice. You hear the song initially and react one way to it, the video then recontextualizes it, and afterwards the song takes on the new meaning even absent the video.
Title: Re: Hip Hop
Post by: WorldForgot on May 09, 2018, 01:17:16 PM
Agreed, undeniably this was calculated, dropped legiterally at the same time the SNL episode started airing on the West Coast. Childish Gambino has been a visual/audio project for as long as I've caught it, during the IAMDONALD phase he would have ?UESTLOVE and James Murphy projected behind him as accompaniment or a contextualizing Dan Eckman music video.

Considering he made a full script for BTI, I wonder how far Donald will go for Gambino'z purportedly final outing.
