I've talked about him before -- he needs his own thread. Could be the biggest director still consistently working in France, yet we hardly ever hear of him. He started off as an assistant to Melville, then did press work for other directors, most notably Godard. His first film was The Clockmaker Of St Paul. He's got kind of an off-the-cuff style, showy but not polished camera moves.

Coup De Torchon, Round Midnight, and L.627 are all great films.

His newest one is Safe Conduct, which didn't play where I live, so yet again I get screwed out of a possible foreign masterpiece (for the time being). Anybody see this???
Those who say that the totalitarian state of the Soviet Union was not "real" Marxism also cannot admit that one simple feature of Marxism makes totalitarianism necessary:  the rejection of civil society. Since civil society is the sphere of private activity, its abolition and replacement by political society means that nothing private remains. That is already the essence of totalitarianism; and the moralistic practice of the trendy Left, which regards everything as political and sometimes reveals its hostility to free speech, does nothing to contradict this implication.

When those who hated capital and consumption (and Jews) in the 20th century murdered some hundred million people, and the poster children for the struggle against international capitalism and America are now fanatical Islamic terrorists, this puts recent enthusiasts in an awkward position. Most of them are too dense and shameless to appreciate it, and far too many are taken in by the moralistic and paternalistic rhetoric of the Left.

Coup de Tourchon is a perfect example of why criterion blind buys are a great gamble.  It's such an amazing film-- and a spot-on Thompson adaptation too!  I've only seen one other film of his, the dreadful 'Death Watch.'  I keep meaning to see more of his stuff (I heard Safe Conduct was great).  One day.

Thanks SoNowThen. I was just debating on whether or not to blind buy Coup de Torchon, and now you've made the decision easier. But if it sucks, I'm gonna kill you.
My life has taken another turn again. The days move along with regularity, over and over. One day indistinguishable from the next. A long, continuous chain. Then suddenly, there is change.

Let us know. I hope you enjoy it. As weak2nd said, it's one of those amazing CC surprises.
