i just wanted to begin discussion of who is the better mashup dj at the moment since it's taken a recent prevalence in the dj scene
girl talk of course being the most noticed of the 'genre'
but in my opinion the most overrated
ludachrist
is definitely the best as far as technical mixing and creativity goes, ghostbusta rhymes(ghostbusters theme and dangerous) and the legend of curtis(a little bit by 50cent and the nes zelda music) being obvious examples.
e603 simply kills it in my opinion by mixing cleanly some of the best pieces of music flawlessly to the point of making his mixes sound better fitting than the originals

then there is girltalk which is incredibly overrated and sometimes completely offkey and neutral to me
but definitely the most popular
and easter egg and all these other shits

but i would like this thread to be a few things:
-discussion of this type of music
-a contest in which everyone should try and list the samples in order from the e603 albums (and there are hundreds)
-and a discussion on whether this is original music or simple djing (which for decades has been the intersplicing of vocals with an instrumental of a different track but has recently become more of an artform out of irony or wry humour)

Girl Talk isn't the best around, but it's not fair to lump him into the mashup category.  Night Ripper and Feed The Animals can be construed as mashup, but his earlier work, which I prefer anyway, is more like noisy deconstruction of pop music.

Mashups in and of themselves can be fun, but they make a mockery of actual DJ'ing.  The practice of them reminds me more of a really tight mixtape than anything else, which is still really cool.  Sure, it's dancy, but with so many programs available to make it easy to do, you see groups get hot out of nowhere, who have no discernable voice or anything interesting to add to the genre (e.g. - the Hood Internet.)

I'll still check out e603 and Ludachrist, since I'm not too familiar with them at present.  I'll see what all these youngsters are babbling on and on about these days.

love this album. though considering the way he breaks up the samples it's certainly better than your average mashup disc. 

for the most part i feel like mashup artists are diverting enough to be fun but instantly forgettable. In 20 years no one will be talking about a "classic" girl talk album.

Oh golly, what will everyone think of this in 20 yrs?  even though i agree, i'm not really sure where that pertains to you or me?  I had no idea someone would "prefer girltalks older stuff" and i wasn't aware it got underground.  i personally didn't care for the industrial sounding material.  I enjoy a nicely sounding product, in the way that GT does things or the 603 album 'Something for Everyone'  But, e603 is killer, when 'in the air tonight' came ined in, i knew it.  Some of girltalk is a bit contrived, or forced, but i enjoy listening to it.  i'd listen to many people's approaches like this to music already been made.  the material that i like by e603 consists of darker progressions in many places, even when adding britney spears.  I enjoy that darker feel though. thanks 03. 

This shit is fun (for me) and i don't really need to explain why.  nor do i think it's necessary to explain why a statement regarding it's relevance in 20 yrs is ridiculous.  It's something that came along with the technological wave. I mean you have something like paul's boutique magnified, and taken to a new level. i've done some sampling myself, beat matching can be a very awesome feeling.  ESPECIALLY when it's a bunch of shit you think sounds awesome mashed with other shit THAT WORKS in that casual way, ya know?  Just romanticizing a bit.

What's a "nice sounding product"? Something that's inoffensive or pleasant?  "Secret Diary" is a very engaging and often aggressive album that isn't designed to get people dancing to pop music layered over pop music.  It doesn't take a whole lot of talent to do that (and I am far from dismissing DJ'ing as an art form).  Girl Talk's earliest music thrusts itself upon the listener, and with each passing album he fades more and more into the quiet, faded niche of ironic left field indie music under gangster rap acapellas.

It's as if to be acceptable in music, one must take the rules set before them and apply them precisely as it has been done before, but somehow unique without damaging the original status.  Mashups are lazy as fuck because they take high quality rips of layered music and use them to their own ends.  They are fun to make, and I definitely encourage anyone who has a computer to get the program (one of many) to try it out.   But it's hard for me to grant legitimacy to mashup artists.  I don't think what they do is completely invalid, but how worthwhile is it once you've heard a couple mashups?  They fall prey to Death Metal and Christian Rock type trappings.  The very title of the genre almost completely dictates the output of sound.  Though there are innovative Death Metal bands and there are, I'm sure maybe possibly, some form of listenable Christian Rock, their limitations precede them.

I love Girl Talk since all the Girl Talk shows I go to are a blast and, sure, it could be ANY mashup artist.  However, Girl Talk does something in his mashups that a lot of mashup artists do not.  While many are concerned with remaining true to using only samples from pre-existing material (how thoughtful of them) Girl Talk infuses his with general house samples to guarantee that the bass will pound or there will be steady high hats or whatever.  It gives a unique body to his stuff that isn't obtrusive in every song.  Rather than finding a new house song to fit each track, he realizes the importance of a steady "thump-2-3-4" and isn't afraid to break it out.  I downloaded the e-603, and I gotta say, it's pretty flat.  It's just like spinning a dial on the radio.

I enjoy Feed The Animals as well since it actually features a consistent level of bitrate quality among the songs as opposed to Night Ripper, but if you never get into Secret Diary, I would still recommend Unstoppable, since it definitely bridges the gap between mashup gimmick and pop music deconstruction.

I mean you have something like paul's boutique magnified, and taken to a new level.

(even if he does just hit play and dance around.) One positive result is artists like bullion taking the mashup idea one step further and creating something more musical than just "hey these two songs are in the same key and bpm's!"
