Title: this is a really good song.
Post by: Jeremy Blackman on May 17, 2009, 08:16:41 PM
Emily Haines - Reading In Bed

I heard this live acoustic version (http://xixax.com/files/jb/readinginbed_live.mp3) on the radio (with an added verse that you might recognize) and fell in love with the song.

Yes, I realized we don't really have a thread for individual song advocacy, so this is probably a good place to start some of that. Rare, overlooked, or undercelebrated tracks would be best. If you're listening to a particular album and want to talk about that, go here (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=1631.0). This is a thread for songs.

And no, links to songs are not necessary. Names are all we need. I just happened to be obsessive enough about this song to find this radio version (which I ripped from this (http://minnesota.publicradio.org/collections/special/columns/music_blog/archive/2009/04/theft_of_the_di_3.shtml)).

Strangely I am listening a lot to Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus these days http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jJWQkVgDs4  :ponder:  probably because of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQcXsLhk11w

I just discovered that this song has the highest play count on my iPod:

Mates of State - "Lullaby Haze"

There's a good reason. I can remember I was playing it repeatedly the week I discovered that album. Not only is it a musical masterpiece, it's addictive. Some moments in the song give me chills, like 1:43, with the rolling drums and piano, and the "oo-hoo" vocals, all very beautiful, evocative, and somehow perfect.

Note: Though it seems like a quiet song, it should be played loud.

I mostly love the intro, about 0:00-1:50. But what a mesmerizing and masterful intro it is.

I really dig Musee Mecanique. I played a show with them when they came through oklahoma they stayed at our house and recorded a bit of a woodie guthrie song on our pro-tools set up. Really great people.

Every time I think that this girl's exhausted the possibilities of what a human being can do with their voice, she pulls out something totally new and crazy and amazing sounding.  Her whole new album is fantastic, actually.

Fantastic and catchy song, actually very hard to find at the moment if you're not in the UK. I did find it here (http://depositfiles.com/files/07bm3jg8p).

I discovered some background info on this song, and the lyrics. It gets much more interesting. The band posted this description of the song on their myspace blog (http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=253099360&blogId=506207791):

imagines what it would be like to try and have any kind of normal relationship if your country was being bombed constantly by an occupying nation, from the point of view of a self-obsessed, post-traumatic stress disordered R&B lothario

EDIT: See next post for lyrics...

Screw it, I just transcribed the lyrics myself. Used the original track, the music video, and a live in-studio video. It's a much more interesting song now...

Lucifer, you're lying dead
Crosses on the kitchen sink
Barb wire in the bathroom
I can't make new memories since

Flashbacks to the time
This shell-shocked apartment was the place
I met with your boy
It's a model thing yeah it's a model thing oh
He looked at me funny and I oh oh
Think our secret's out and I oh-oh-oh
I try to explain
But then munitions reign
And we're the epicenter oh

It's like I'm watching the A4 paper takin' over the guillotine
It's like I'm watching the A4 paper takin' over the guillotine

And I wanna know what happened to your boyfriend
Cause he was lookin' at me like whoah
Yeah right before the kitchen was a dustbowl
And tossin' me the keys and I can't forget how
Then everything just coming through the windows
And half the street was under my nails
It's like we're sitting in a Faraday cage
When the lights all fail

I fly through the walls
All pieces colliding and I
See Raymond apart
He's a-frowning now
Waggin' a finger at me boy
His knees bend the other way ah boy boy
Are you guys together honey b-b-boy
Oh but now I can't find his torso hm hm hm
I guess you're separated oh

It's like I'm watching the A4 paper takin' over the guillotine
I just wanna know...

The lights all fail
Lucifer, you're lying dead
I do believe there are more bases in sight
The lights all fail
Crosses on the kitchen sink
[Unintelligible]
Babies on the bullseye
I do believe there are more bases in sight
The lights all fail
I can't make new memories since 'ries since 'ries since
[Unintelligible]

And I wanna know what happened to your boyfriend
Cause he was lookin' at me like whoah
Yeah right before the kitchen was a dustbowl
And tossin' me the keys and I can't forget how
Then everything just coming through the windows
And half the street was under my nails
It's like we're sitting in a Faraday cage
When the lights all fail

And now everybody gotta go hungry
And everybody cover up their mouths
And I haven't seen the body count lately
But lookin' at your faces it must have been bad
And everybody answers their phone calls
But people say the army's on fire
It's like we're sitting with a parachute torn
But the airport's gone

Yeah, I'm really grateful to you for mentioning that song - it's become the tune of my winter, and I've been introducing everyone to the band. It wasn't until I'd listened to it a couple of times that I realized the video is essentially a pretty literal translation of the lyrics: guy meets up with friend to tell him he's been sleeping with his girlfriend, then they start getting bombed.

The reference in their description to an "R & B lothario" lends more credence to my theory that they're referencing R Kelly's Trapped in the Closet with the line "Cos he was lookin' at me like 'whoa'" (in a similar moment of stand-off between two guys over the issue of an adulterous woman in TITC Kelly sings, "Then he stepped to me, I'm like 'whoa'".)

The latest from these guys, who are somehow quickly becoming one of my favourite bands despite having not even released an album yet (thanks again to JB for posting about them here!). Got to say, I'm hooked.
I'm also a little annoyed that the US Itunes doesn't carry the music.  I'll have to look for torrents when I get home.

Okay, has anybody found Everything Everything tracks in a downloadable format that isn't just from Youtube?

I'm dying here.  iTunes has it in the UK store only and you can't use a US credit card to buy from the UK iTunes.

Also, my subscription torrent sites are all gone for me so I'm public only and they don't like me or my taste in music.

I don't know the MEANING of the word DRM!

Title: Re: this is a really good song.
Post by: Pas on June 17, 2010, 09:23:32 AM
Digital rights management!

Meaning that the song you bought/downloaded on iTunes can only be played on your computer/your device and not shared.

But I am told by my coworker that iTunes songs are no longer DRMed... I don't know if that means you can send them to a friend, but I'd be surprised. Maybe! Try it.

also your name and email is attached to the songs so if RK decides to leak it to the rest of the internet it will be immediately traceable back to you.  not that RK would do that.

I found the Schoolin' EP that has 5 versions of that same song.  My brief research made it seem like they don't really have a full album, so if this is what you're looking for, I've found it online at 196 kbps (VBR).

DRM workaround for iTunes songs: burn them to a cd from iTunes, then rip them back to the computer. You might even be able to do it without the cd with a cd-drive emulator like Daemon Tools or PowerISO, but I haven't tried it.

I have an app where as long as I'm wearing Apple headphones, I can just think of the song and it will download to my iTunes on my iPhone. You have to wait a few minutes for the headache to subside before listening, but it's easier than queuing up a torrent. If there's a password, you just have to think of the string of characters and it enters it. I have a fat brain so I'm always putting in the wrong one lol. Sometimes I go through a whole weekend of just laying in bed listening to music.

It's not his debut, but it will be awesome. The song, at first sounds like a gimmick, but after a couple minutes it really shines. I hope this becomes a top single just because it's a good song and it's nuts and I wanna see if we finally get the censors to agree to fuck. We've already gotten them to agree to shit on It's Always Sunny on FX.

The song is called "Fuck You". It's pretty much everywhere on the Internet right now, so just do a search and you should be able to find a working copy.

yeah it's alright i guess but it has little replay value and the constant swearing makes it feel like it's trying too hard.

anyway, i really like the new song by Ben Folds from his upcoming collaboration with Nick Hornby (he wrote all the lyrics). it's called From Above and you can hear a good chunk of it at the end of this interview (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SndvKoopswE#t=5m11s) where they discuss the album and the ideas behind it. a definite steal.

Is constant swearing a problem to you or is it just the over repetition of it?  That's what seemed to bother me.  The occurrence of vulgarity doesn't faze me much, but the song was probably a minute too long to me.  I don't know, I'm not a huge Cee-Lo fan.  I only liked half of Gnarles Barkeley.

i have nothing against swearing by itself (obviously) in songs or otherwise, i was introduced to it early on through NWA and countless other mad cunts who pretty much made an art form out of it. it's the fact that the song has not much else going for it and it knows it. the reason it's "all over the internet" is not because it's some amazing song, it's just because ppl like swearing like they just turned 15 or something. it's embarrassing. the idea of the song is stupid too, OK we get it, she was obviously not that great a girl and the point is made in the first minute, why go on about it? jesus even Kanye (jesus 2?) made something interesting out of the standard gold-digger motif.

it's similar to my complaint against amateur films. constant swearing for no reason at all is LAME. being impressed by it makes you no different than someone who loves Boondock Saints.

It's a good-enough song, but it's a shame that it's so big because of the swearing.  Cee-lo is great and he's had way better songs than this.

when I saw everyone posting it and without knowing anything about it I figured the lyrics would be exactly what the title suggested, and I was right.  but I liked the song because of its execution - it's classy and catchy and for a gimmick it's surprisingly well thought out.  I was just telling my friends the other day how joke songs don't try very hard anymore and mostly stay at the level of the SNL digital shorts or flight of the conchords - or much much worse.  the gold standard for me would always be "every sperm is sacred" from monty python's meaning of life.  they had one joke in that song but they carried it through with conviction, musicality and production.  I was very glad that Fuck You's listenable outside of its one-joke premise.  that's a step in the right direction.

It's a good song, but it's essentially just "Young Folks" by Peter Bjorn and John.  That album has two good songs and the rest blows.  I feel like some indie bands just want to release one good summer jam then don't really care what happens.

Yeah... Tuneyards is one of those things that I admire but that still doesn't work for me. It's probably the vocals (more than the self-awareness). I think it bothers me subconsciously that she's emulating some uber-specific cultural (African) vocals, and the actual execution is so forceful (and polarizing) that it could easily go one way or the other.

She's thrilled about it, of course, but along the way, the socially conscious Connecticut native has ruminated deeply over every move — from even deciding to concentrate on her art at all, in lieu of, say, becoming a doctor or a pro bono lawyer ("It's something very recent for me to be like, you know what? Forgive yourself, you have to do this"), to allowing herself to exhibit her love for African music: "When I started tUne-yArDs ... I made a decision to forgive myself for what sounds were coming out," she says. "When I give my influences, I give who they really are: I took this yodeling style from Central Africa, and I took this chordal harmonic sense from Hukwe Zawose in Tanzania. It seems like a tightrope walk of sorts, because one could accuse me of political correctness in the same breath as thievery of African musical traditions."

Alright, I think I'm pinpointing it now.

On "Bizness," for example, particularly when she sings the "don't take my life away" line... She's not from Africa, and she doesn't have an African accent... so why is she putting one on so deliberately? I can buy the style emulation, but to take on even the vowel inflections is annoying. It's the same thing that annoys me about some white pop/R&B singers (e.g. Rebecca Black, Justin Bieber, and many others), who will sing things like "we so excited" with a straight face. Yes, I just compared Merrill Garbus to Rebecca Black... and while I don't think Merrill Garbus is nearly as bad, for me she's on the same spectrum. The fact that she admits as much doesn't make it less annoying.

I don't think she's putting on an African accent for that line at all.  I think you're choosing to hear that based on what you already know and the things you've decided about her.

That said.... I find this music very fake and forced.  The video makes me a little sick, it seems very 90s arthouse and it's not fresh at all... it sounds like Bobby McFerrin.

Sorry, missed this. I agree about not quite hearing the African influence on the vocals, JB (except for maybe that, what - we might associate the sound 'way', or '-we', with African languages?).

RK - what 90s arthouse would you compare Tuneyards to? (n.b.: This is a request for recommendations, not a rhetorical challenge.)

The African "accent" on certain vowels is nitpicking and isolated and kind of subtle, so I'm not pushing that. However, the "African influence on the vocals" is not imaginary... it's her thing. Again, from the interview:

"When I give my influences, I give who they really are: I took this yodeling style from Central Africa, and I took this chordal harmonic sense from Hukwe Zawose in Tanzania. It seems like a tightrope walk of sorts, because one could accuse me of political correctness in the same breath as thievery of African musical traditions."

Musee Mecanique - "Sleeping In Our Clothes"

I mostly love the intro, about 0:00-1:50. But what a mesmerizing and masterful intro it is.

So I was browsing iTunes to see if Musee Mecanique has made another album, and this happened:

- I see a playlist on the left called 20 Underappreciated Masterpieces
- "Oh, that sounds interesting..."
- "Wow... 'Glass' by Bat For Lashes? I love that song!"
- "Number 2 is 'She Purred, While I Grrred?' That song is a masterpiece! And totally underappreciated!"
- [looking further down the list]
- "Oh my God, this is freaking spot on! Creepy!"
- [processing]
- "Oh... right. I made this playlist."

In any case, here it is. Plenty of "really good songs."

http://c.itunes.apple.com/us/imix/20-underappreciated-masterpieces/id386512074

I'm not sure what the 2 songs are that have since fallen off iTunes, because they were originally there. But I'm sure they were amazing.

recently i've really gotten into Paul Simon. His album, 'hearts and bones' really does it for me. This song didn't make the album, but some of the melody and few lyrics did make it in the song, "when numbers get serious," as the video states. I searched online for this song on youtube, and all I found was a sub par cover.

So, here it is, a throwaway song that's better than any song I'll ever think about writing.

It's typical Daft Punk, it's enjoyable and fun. But I'm glad it's not totally electronica-focussed or anything.

Really?  I think he was a great choice. The record sounds like a classic Neptunes/N.E.R.D tune, so Pharrell singing the hook makes complete sense to me.  Between this song and the Robin Thicke/T.I collab, Pharrell has 2 of the hottest songs out right now.

"Tenderoni" by Kele. It might even sound good on 03's dance floor.

Also before I forget, "Shine" by Lee Scratch Perry. Well, at least the first minute or so. Masterful production by Andrew W. K. The production on "Fire" (off the same album) is also pretty innovative. Unfortunately all of Lee Perry's lyrics are instant self-parody.

woop just saw this.

its a term referring to a type of hiphop that has been around for years, but has recently become a little bit more defined into a culture.
its basically hiphop that is steeped in the visual and audio essence of 90s low quality vhs type of things. stuff that was popular growing up in the late 80s early 90s. nintendo, sega, pokemon, anime, windows 95 apps. there is also heavy dependence on hallucinogenics, hydration, the ocean, space. very dreamy trippy stuff with a lo fi edge to it. i think these videos will describe it much better.

16 minute acoustic song from incredibly intense and under appreciated Newcastle singer/songwriter Richard Dawson.

Uses lots of local dialect and sings about childhood memories like he's having flashbacks from Nam.

Takes some talent to write a 16 minute acoustic track that doesn't get boring at any point. And that voice...holy fuck that voice...it's a weapon.

Definitely. I think the fact that the song itself is about nostalgia to an extent, or at least about looking back and realizing a chunk of your life has passed you by, really evokes that feeling.

Like you, I am not a huge Neil Young fan at all, but I had the same reaction with Tell Me Why a few months ago. There is something in the first seconds, the melody, that instantly hit me...It felt like a song I had a deep connection with, but I didn't even know who Neil Young was when I was a child. I didn't even know who he was three years ago.

I had the same thing with Out on the Weekend.

It's for sure one of the great songs of all time, even if it has had a longer life as a meme than as a real song. I didn't even know about the Jason Derulo song; that's horrifying.

Ariana Grande, of all people, does a really good cover of it, using wired gloves that Imogen Heap helped invent to control the vocoder harmonies. Not a great video here, but it gives you the idea:

It is a bit of a testament to REM's talent that they couldn't even take the piss out of vapid pop music without accidentally making a great song out of it.

I feel the same way about The Cardigans' "Lovefool".

I like the juxtaposition of this fully-tattooed dude in a hockey jersey singing a super earnest pop song about being in love.

A similarish artist (at least in terms of that contradiction) I really like is Fences:

Her album is easily my favorite of this year. She's just great in every way.

Side note: Conor makes an appearance on the album, singing on the song "Would You Rather".

I listened to it and liked it a lot. my favorite artist was Elliott Smith at one point so it shouldn't be surprising that I enjoyed it.

what first happened was i saw Tash Sultana's street performance

she's huge, she's line three in the Coachelle lineup, millions of spotify listens.

then, and i heard the radio compare this to listening stations at record stores of the past, because of spotify i discovered a whole pocket of Australian music.

this has been my personal favorite. some of australian songs are better produced and sound more like songs. i like when the kids get emotional, personally. through my life i've learned this is the kind of music which gets me into social trouble, leaves me alone. this song isn't even about being alone, she's talking to a friend and complaining about the adult world, recalling childhood dreams.

i'm falling in love with guided by voices. they are everything I love about music. I usually just wanna listen to catchy pop songs, and they can repeat some nonsensical shit to a simple riff for 1 and a half minute and make it feel like the most catchy and profound pop song you have ever heard. I don't know how they do it.

this song is perfect. like literally perfect. I can't imagine how music could be any better then this. what you need to to is to listen to it on repeat for an hour until you are convinced it's the best song ever. that's what I did.

hop along's new album is pretty good and frances quinlan continues to have one of the best voices around. as with harriet wheeler and sue tompkins (two other favorite voices of mine) she fronts a band that doesn't do anything original, but has a voice that makes it incredibly special to me. she has a way of spitting out every word as it if was the most important thing in the world. seriously, you can break down any of her vocal performances word for word and realize that she deliver every word perfectly. this isn't just hyperbole. she's that good.

this song isn't from their latest album, but I think it's one of the best song to showcase her voice. just the way she sings "uh-huh, uh-huh" gives me goosebumps, honestly. also, who said indie rock was dead? it's better than ever!

okay, here's a song from their latest album too. "I- I don't know why". OMG.

Life Without Building's live album is so good, I dont even mind the harsh memories it conjures, from the spring two years ago when i found it, luckily, while living in prague for a spell.

I attended FAMU's NYU-Abroad 35mm program ~ That's where I made that Brainwash short film (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySLaBjQjO94)i think you caught in the 4210 Strand thread.

Prague is a beautiful, storied city with a strange air around it. Edited this post form calling them hostile, and xenophobic, because well their politic opinions shouldn't be generalized, of residents or people of anywhere. Also that's xenophobic in itself, isn't it? Drug culture seems dangerous there (it's too easy to cop a srs ziplock from somebody who was supposedly just getting you grass). Food was great. And the czech krona is quite cheap, so I feasted. The hostility I mentioned before stemmed from professors and many overheard conversations, because Syrian refugees were very much on the mind and tongue that Spring.

FAMU's facility is fantastic. The city in total has been so well preserved (from surrender, modestly, and to the reverberations of their dissident tendencies) that you feel centuries of culture all throughout the different neighborhoods. Amazing museums. A great place to get high off creativity. I just couldn't integrate with the locals, even after becoming a regular at a concert venue and in FAMU's basement dining-space/bar. Idk conversations where quite deadened by the air of an American and Czech is tough to learn (our teacher was shit).

If you know anybody who could put you in touch with Barrandov, then i say yeah GO! Barrandov is all the man-power and space of a Hollywood studio lot, with a more village-friendly vibe. To be honest, if I had the opportunity to take a job there I'd definitely return. And actually, I know somebody at BarrandovTV I could put you in touch with, if it does come to that PM me ~

Another good song from that spring:

It's wild how good the songs in that special are on a pure musical level. This one, "All Eyes on Me," "White Woman's Instagram," "Content"... beyond how well they work as comedy and as thematic elements of the overall work, they're also just really skillfully crafted pop music.

That one and All eyes on me are the ones i listen to outside the context of the movie.

I think the film is incredible btw. For me the best covid/lockdown related film from the last couple of years. His other specials are good sure, but with this one he made something that felt truly original and special to me.

Time to boost some music that doesn't have nearly as many views as it deserves:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iB4XjXYw_M
Love this girl. Disaffected electro-punk pop with a dark sense of humor and great hooks. This is the music Machine Gun Kelly thinks he's making. Somehow only 1.4K views on this video so far. Needs more.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXuPyy-6P-E
Very little information out there about this artist. She's Australian, she's released this song... and that's pretty much it. I get this chorus stuck in my head several times a week. At time of posting, it has fewer than 350 views. Needs more!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=od_GT-fnXBc
I posted another Tommy Lefroy song further up in this thread, and they have since released their first EP and become my favorite band, not necessarily in that order. They're going to be huge sooner than later, you might as well get in on the ground floor. This video, at this moment, is at 678 views. Needs more!!! Just look at these lyrics:

Buying garlic at the grocery the morning of Halloween
'Cause you're catching a cold and you're trying to get clean
But I joke with the store clerk, "We're looking for vampires"
And she fucking believes me
LA is crazy

They're so good, you guys. And this is probably only my third or fourth favorite song of theirs. They're all this good.
