Bjork reveals new album details

'Volta' due out in May

Bjork has released details of her forthcoming album.

The Icelandic chanteuse's sixth studio album is entitled 'Volta' and is due out May 7. It will feature 10 tracks, written and produced by Bjork.

Bjork recruited several notable collaborators to work on the album, including super-producer Timbaland and Antony Hegarty of Antony & the Johnsons.

She also brought in acclaimed African artists Toumani Diabate and Konono No 1 (who won BBC's World Music Award last year), as well as a 10-piece brass section composed of female Icelandic musicians, and Min Xiao-Fen to play the pipa (a Chinese stringed instrument).

As previously announced, Bjork will headline several festivals later this year, including California's Coachella Festival on April 27, and the Glastonbury Festival on June 7.

I was excited to finally see her live, but now I see it would cost me upwards of $140 (plus the travel to and from New York or Chicago).

This is very upsetting.

first initial reaction is that the knife is going to sue somebody.

second is that the timbaland produced song is hardly going to revive her career like it did for nelly furtado's.

other than that, a mother fucking brilliant song. the video is probably going to future a lot of scenes with björk stumbling through woods and shit.

I am definitely enjoying this.  I didn't really know what direction Bjork was going to take after her recent releases, but this is a pretty welcome approach.  I really like that it isn't an overly Timabaland song, which usually happens when he produces something.  I attribute that to the other artist just forfeiting the table to him.

apparently timbaland didn't produce this (or any other songs on the record).  he worked with her and came up with some beats that she proceeded to bjork with them for over a year.  there was an interview at pitchfork, but i can't seem to find it now.

Bjork Disses Bob Dylan, Plans Tour
Source: Rollling Stone

"Sometimes the recording of the album is just the beginning," says Bjork when asked about her upcoming world tour, which has her trekking across Europe for the outdoor festival circuit. "You don't know which song is going to grow and change after being played very, very many times." The live versions of the songs from her awesomely experimental new disc Volta may very well sound different when she circles back to play the Austin City Limits in September. At the fest, Bjork will share the stage with none other than Bob Dylan, which got us talking about whether she's excited to share the stage with the big man. Not so much: "I've never really gotten into him," she says. "His voice is too nasal. And it's like literature music. Quite boring three-chord structures serve as a bed for words. I'm too much of a music lover for that to happen." This isn't the first time the sprite has expressed her distaste for rock music, but dang! Them's fighting words! We sooo predict a Bjork-Bob smackdown. You heard it here first.

Björk Rips into Kiwi

Björk has given new meaning to the phrase "thunder from Down Under."

The pint-sized Icelandic singer attacked a newspaper photographer in New Zealand Sunday after he attempted to get a few shots off upon her arrival at Auckland International Airport, per local media reports.

New Zealand Herald shutterbug Glenn Jeffrey told his country's Press Association news agency that he had simply snapped a few pictures of Björk when she all of a sudden grabbed him and ripped his T-shirt.

"As I turned and walked away she came up behind me, grabbed the back of my black skivvy and tore it," Jeffrey, 25, said. "As she did this she fell over, she fell to the ground."

"At no stage did I touch her or speak with her," he added.

Jeffrey said that the "It's Oh So Quiet" songstress didn't say anything, but that he could hear her male companion saying, "B, don't do this, B, don't do this."

An airport spokeswoman told reporters that there is video footage of the incident in case police request it. (But in case they don't, you can still see it on YouTube.)

Jeffrey has spoken to the cops, but as yet it's unknown whether any further action will be taken.

"I don't see being assaulted as I'm working as a press photographer as an acceptable thing," Jeffrey said. "If anybody assaults anybody you have the right to a legal recourse, whoever they are."

Per the Herald, Björk also went postal on a reporter in 1996 when the hapless journalist tried to ask the 12-time Grammy nominee's then-10-year-old son Sindri a question. The Dancer in the Dark star later apologized and no charges were ever filed.

The allegedly volatile chanteuse is in town to perform at the Big Day Out music festival on Friday. The annual event sets up shop in both New Zealand and Australia and she is among the artists set to appear in both countries. Other headliners this year include Rage Against the Machine, Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem.

Still need to sit with this for a while but it's pretty good. String and beat driven, very emotional. It doesn't match any of her hat-trick albums (Post-Homogenic-Vespertine) and folks say it's a kind of dark Vespertine with hints of Homogenic. This comparison makes sense due to the strings, melodic ideas and emotional honesty of the album but overall I don't think they're entirely appropriate. Those albums felt fresh, innovative and a bit poppier. The structures on this record are lengthy and recall the hard-to-pin flow of the previous album. I think my favourite track is the last one. More listens will happen in the future.

Bjork's "Black Lake" retrospective will be at MoMA (http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/1501) March 8–June 7, 2015

The Museum of Modern Art presents a retrospective of the multifaceted work of composer, musician, and singer Björk. The exhibition draws from more than 20 years of the artist's daring and innovative projects and her eight full-length albums to chronicle her career through sound, film, visuals, instruments, objects, and costumes. In the Museum lobby, instruments used on Biophilia (2011)—a gameleste, pipe organ, gravity harp, and Tesla coil—play songs from the album at different points throughout the day. On the second floor, in the Marron Atrium, two spaces have been constructed: one is dedicated to a new sound and video installation, commissioned by The Museum of Modern Art, for "Black Lake," a song from Björk's new album Vulnicura (2015); and the second is a cinema room that screens a retrospective in music videos, from Debut (1993) to Biophilia. On the third floor, Songlines presents an interactive, location-based audio experience through Björk's albums, with a biographical narrative that is both personal and poetic, written by the acclaimed Icelandic writer Sjón, along with many visuals, objects, and costumes, including the robots designed by Chris Cunningham for the "All Is Full of Love" music video, Marjan Pejowski's Swan Dress (2001), and Iris van Herpen's Biophilia tour dress (2013), among many others.

Entry to the Björk exhibition is included with general Museum admission. Timed tickets are required for the Songlines portion of the exhibition, and are available same-day and on-site only, at no additional charge, on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning at 10:30 a.m. daily.

Her new album is almost entirely about the breakup.

EDIT:

More on the album- It's weird because I don't think any of the songs are actually bad but it feels like she's retreading old ground at times and it isn't as memorable as it should be (I explained briefly how it was different to her previous works earlier). Even though her last two albums were not as well-recieved as this one, they were still rather different/odd. The Haxan Cloak mixed every track on the album but I think if he had a greater hand in the production, the album would have been more sonically interesting. His Excavation album was freaky and dark. His soundscapes, Bjork's vocals/vision/strings and Arca's odd weird bits. It would move her further away from pop though.

There's stuff happening all over this album but there's still a sparseness to it that I don't entirely dig. Still, not a bad album. Quicksand is still the best track.
