Title: Intonation/Pitchfork Music Festival(s)

I'm going to that this weekend.  I will be a changed man.  I'm mostly excited for Magnolia Electric Co, Death from Above 1979, Decemberists, Xiu Xiu and Tortoise, but I'm still anxious to hear the others, too.

Wouldn't this be the better link option:

http://intonationmusicfest.com/

Also, there isn't a single band playing in that festival that I don't like.  And $22 is such a good price.

If it wasn't on the other side of the country I'd go too.

Make sure you catch The Hold Steady's act.

And Deerhoof.

I saw deerhoof at a little dorm house a few months ago at amherst college. It was really a hipster show cause everyone was excited to see them then when they started playing everyone was just talking and trying to act cool and noone could see the band. The lead singer is this tiny tiny asian lady. She was selling the merch at the door and I talked to her for a good 30 minutes then she took the stage and I was like "hah, weird" good people though. Musics alright.

I just saw this, and I'm still blown away from it...

Magnolia Electric Co. was awesome... I almost met Jason Molina, but was too shocked to say something to him. I was able to compose myself when I met Death From Above 1979, since I wasn't going to allow myself to pass up meeting them.  Two great guys.  Their set was fucking badass, and I was right by the speaker for it.  I was also right by the speaker for Prefuse 73, which was amazing.  Four Tet had an awesome show.

Decemberists closed with Mariner's Revenge, which was good because I was a little irritated they didn't play it the whole show... and then BOOM!  They closed with it.  Pelican was also pretty good... I wasn't prepared for Deerhoof or Xiu Xiu, and I'm still not really sure if I like them or not.

I'll put up pictures later, hopefully they'll turn out nicely.

I'm not sure how to exactly interpret that, but I'm into all sorts of music.  I really like all genres, but prefer the vanguards of those genres.  There's something unique about almost everyone, but I don't know... some just clicks more than others, you know?

I saw the Aquabats two weeks ago, saw Intonation, I'm going to see Sigur Ros, Sufjan Stevens, Nine Inch Nails and Mates of State by the end of the year, not counting any other concerts that may come my way.

Sometimes I'm afraid I just like music in general. .. then I turn on the radio, and realize how much I prefer the music I listen to instead.

Over the weekend I saw Pitchfork Music Festival, which was branched off from last year's Intontaion (Pitchfork sponsored Intonation, and I guess it made enough money for Intonation to do it by themselves, but Pitchfork decided to run their own as well... I opted for Pitchfork).  It was an amazing event (though it will be too soon if I see another grown man with a huge beard in obnoxious goggles, a shirt that's 4 sizes too small and short shorts).

There wasn't an act I didn't enjoy, and the DJ tent was much improved over last year where the DJ's would just spin records and we'd listen to stuff they've produced, this year they made beats live.  It was pretty badass.

My top 10 performances is something like...

10 - Os Mutantes
9 - Man Man
8 - Silver Jews
7 - Spoon
6 - Mission of Burma
5 - Tapes 'n' Tapes
4 - Devendra Banhart
3 - Band of Horses
2 - Danielson
1 - Mountain Goats

Honorable Mention: Aesop Rock f/ Mr. Lif

I love those guys, I didn't see them in a festival atmosphere but they played in a very very tiny room with about 130 people present and they put on an amazing  show

I missed last year's festival because I waited too long for the tickets, thinking that an outdoor venue wasn't likely to sell out (considering how many people were at the previous two), but alas it did.

So this time, I went cautiously and got the tickets as soon as they went on sale.  Plus, as they add bands, the prices are known to go up to pay for the acquisition of bands who demand more money.

As it is, I'm paying $65, for the 3 day pass.  The prices are going up, this is about the limit of how much I'm willing to spend, but for a 3 day pass of bands I'd already pay to see separately, this is a bargain.

The lineup looks beautiful now, and it's only primed to get better (as it usually does).

http://www.pitchforkmusicfestival.com/friday.php

(As of now)

Friday
---------
Public Enemy (performing all of It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back)

Saturday
---------
Animal Collective
!!!
Vampire Weekend
Dizzee Rascal
No Age
Atlas Sound
Fleet Foxes

Sunday
---------
Spiritualized
M. Ward
Boris
Extra Golden
El Guincho

Right now I'm most pumped about Boris, Animal Collective and Dizzee Rascal, unless they actually have every member of Public Enemy return for the show.  Then that will overshadow the following two days.

Anyone else in Xixax going to this fine event?

$65 for a three day pass is a fucking steal. I'd pay $100. Unfortunately, I won't be able to go since it's on the other side of the country.

I'd like to see Spiritualized. That should be killer.

You should come.

Unless Chicago is way out of the way for you.

But the ticket price should adjust the travel price so that it wouldn't be too expensive.

This is the fourth year of it, so you should be good.  Usually a big turn out, considering the low price and nifty location to a densely populated hipster capital.

I've only gone to two of the three, and I really wish I didn't miss last year's, but it happens.  Should turn out to be pretty awesome.  At this point I'm especially looking forward to Boris, Dinosaur Jr., Animal Collective, Apples In Stereo and the Dirty Projectors.  It all looks exciting, though.

Interesting show, really.  Some great sets, some real disappointments, but the great sets made up for them.

First off, Boris decimated the show.  This is an instance where it really matters who you ask about how it went because a lot of people I know scoffed their performance, but in general they don't listen to the band anyway.  They put on a hell of a set.  Real bassy metal opened and closed with a gigantic gong.  It was glorious.

Of course Animal Collective blew everything up.  It had a lot of dazzling lights and from start to finish, was a nonstop set.  From here on out, I will make it a personal resolve to never miss them again.  They also played some off of Panda Bear's "Person Pitch," which was pretty exciting.

Cut Copy was a no show.  Atlas Sound and some other guys tried to provide solace by suggesting they could play an improv set and see how cool it would turn out, but by then, most people decided to leave.  My friends and I skipped Spoon entirely, they just don't do a whole lot for me, and my friends weren't really into them.

Fuck Buttons was a major surprise.  They put on a great set, despite being a little set back from technical problems, but when they got out, they were phenomenal.  I hadn't heard them going in, but I'm all over their shit now.

!!! was standout amazing, and Dizzee Rascal got the crowd pretty hyped up.

Public Enemy was OK, but really, it was a bad vibe.  You've got Pitchfork crowd kids, motherfuckers in ironic t-shirts and goofy sunglasses, and it was clear that PE was just there to get paid then promptly get the fuck out.  Professor Griff didn't even rap, just stood back by the onstage soldiers (the PE standard).  The album is great, but the performance felt rushed.  Not to mention, at the end before they were done, Flava Flav went on a long speech about the evils of racism to a sea of pale white people.

Fucking elbow to elbow, though.  Hopefully the next few lineups get worse in terms of obscurity so I can either not go or go and it won't be so packed.

Shuffling in the crowd, did you get to rub up on any hot hipster girls asses?

I don't know how a Fuck Button's show would work. Their music is so droney. It doesn't sound like it would translate very well live. Good to hear it does.

Well, I'm into droney stuff lately, so it got my attention.  Mostly people were peeling away, but when you were close enough to some speakers, you could hear the glorious subtleties in the music.

They go nuts while they play, so that's cool.

omg I swear I'm not gay, but I always thought hipster boys had nicer asses than hipster girls. Maybe it's the women's jeans they wear.

I wish I could have gone. Everything I'm hearing had Boris being badass. I'm hoping some videos get put on pitchfork.tv of their performance or at least of some interesting bands. All they have now is Hold Steady and I don't dig them too much.

Holy shit, this was the finest Pitchfork yet, I do declare.

It may have raised in price from $35 for two days to $80 for two and a half days, but its intensity still bursts out of the seams for the price.

There were about 40 acts altogether, but here's my top 10.

10 ) The Walkmen

9 ) Matt and Kim

8 ) M83

7 ) Beirut

6 ) Final Fantasy

5 ) Fucked Up

4 ) MF DOOM

3 ) DJ Rupture

2 ) Flaming Lips

1 ) Pharoahe Monch

Shows that sadly, because I was at another performance or waiting by the stage for a show I anticipate more, I missed:

Vivian Girls

Wavves

Yeasayer

Grizzly Bear

Japandroids

But overall, I think I made the right choices because the shows I saw were pretty fucking rad.

Alright all you yearly Pitchfork attendees, things are going to be sweet this year.  I only got a Sunday ticket so far since I'm broke, but here's the tentative lineup! (I didn't want to go for all 3 days, but I'll probably end up buying a Friday or Saturday ticket depending on who signs up later)

http://pitchforkmusicfestival.com/news.php

As previously reported, the 2010 Pitchfork Music Festival will be held at Chicago's Union Park on July 16 – 18. We are pleased to announce the first batch of bands slated to perform, as well as proclaim that tickets are on sale today at 12 PM CST! This year's festival will culminate to the highly anticipated return of the legendary band Pavement! Friday features indie-rock, chart-topping mainstays Modest Mouse, while Saturday and Sunday sees performances by LCD Soundsystem, Raekwon, Here We Go Magic, St. Vincent, Lightening Bolt, Cass McCombs and Sleigh Bells. Stay tuned, as more bands will be announced in the coming weeks.

Single-day tickets can be purchased for $40 and three-day passes for $90. This year, Friday will featuring more bands, providing festival-goers with a longer day of music. Purchase your tickets early, as three-day passes are sure to sell out quickly!

The 2010 Pitchfork Festival Lineup so far:

Friday
Modest Mouse

Saturday
LCD Soundsystem
Raekwon

Sunday
Pavement
St. Vincent
Lightning Bolt
Cass McCombs

Friday is actually slated to be a full day of music, so sadly, they may just be playing a set, not an album a la All Tomorrow's Parties.

For what it's worth, I'd wish for This Is A Long Way To Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About.

Well fuck.  My friends who got their pitchfork tickets already received them in the mail, but I still haven't gotten mine.  When I talked to ticketweb's customer support about not receiving my tickets in the mail they said that under no circumstances would they refund or reissue any lost, damaged or stolen tickets.

And I'll be damned if I pay them any fucking more money.

But I hope, somehow, that I can go.

EDIT: HOLY SHIT I FINALLY GOT MY TICKETS IN THE MAIL, FUCK YOU CHICAGO POSTAL SYSTEM, HELLO LIGHTNING BOLT!

I know that Reinhold and I are the only ones going, but damn, the lineup has just been altered again, and since I'm only concerned with Sunday, it just got even more badass:

Sunday

Pavement
Big Boi
Major Lazer
St. Vincent
Lightning Bolt
Beach House
Girls

Sleigh Bells
Neon Indian
Cass McCombs
Here We Go Magic
Surfer Blood
Local Natives
Washed Out
Best Coast
CAVE
Allá

Anything not bolded means I know little than more than a song by the band, so if anyone has any heavy recommendations based among them, I'll check them out.

Anything in bold means I will be ecstatic to see them.  The end of the night is going to be tricky, I can tell.

walrus: a Sunday recommendation is CAVE, for 3 reasons: 1) they play at 1pm, so you wont be missing any of the bands/performers you have chosen to embolden;  2) they are incredibly talented and play a pretty unique style of psychedelic, German inspired, highly danceable, noisy rock that is truly wicked when heard live; and 3) my brother is a member of the band.

I'm not to good at selling them, but am really just an avid fan and would recommend checking them out.  A Pitchfork review of their latest EP: http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/14250-pure-moods-ep/

Also, you can sample most of their tracks online, but here is one to get you started: http://covertcuriosity.blogspot.com/2010/05/cave-pure-moods.html

I hadn't updated the post but I actually am really looking forward to them.  They've played a lot in Chicago but I haven't gotten a chance to see them, but they always get great reviews.

Also: Sleigh Bells has advanced (likely to due to hype) to a longer, later set, switching spots with Girls, who fell back to a shorter, earlier set.

Them's the breaks.

Well, Pitchfork has now announced it will be happening and how much it will cost and NO OFFICIAL BANDS HAVE YET TO BE ANNOUNCED.

What the fuck?  $110 for presale tickets, $45 for a single day, which in and of themselves would be arbitrary purchases since you have no idea what you'd be seeing.  Now, I'm going to go ahead and assume either they feel like they're in a position where they can do whatever they want, or they have some incredible acts booked and are keeping them secret.  I'm pretty sure it's the former.

So among the few that attend this festival anymore, myself included since the prices kept going up and the acts were dwindling in quality, this year is looking like...

FRIDAY JULY 13TH

Feist
A$AP Rocky
Tim Hecker
Willis Earl Beal
and more!

SATURDAY JULY 14TH

Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Hot Chip
Grimes
Liturgy
Cloud Nothings
and more!

SUNDAY JULY 15TH

Vampire Weekend
AraabMUZIK
Kendrick Lamar
The Field
and more!

Apparently the tickets are staying the same price as $45 per day and $110 for the weekend.  The way it's looking now, I may just opt for Saturday if just to see GY!BE and Grimes, both of which I'm quite fond, and Hot Chip who I'm indifferent to but nevertheless enjoy.

Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky are both decent hip-hop acts, but the day surrounding them doesn't merit buying an entire day just yet and the weekend pass just doesn't seem very valuable to me.

Anyone else going?
