"Optimistic!"

Fiona Apple follows up her dark 1999 masterpiece When the Pawn... with something a bit more humorous

>>"Personally, I think humiliation is worse than death," Fiona Apple says, taking a break from mixing her first record in more than three years. "Not that death is OK; it's just that humiliation is something you have to live with."

Rock's reigning philosopher-chanteuse hasn't lost her dark edge during her hiatus from the spotlight. But according to those who know her best, she has lightened up a bit. "These songs definitely show more of her sense of humor," says producer Jon Brion, who worked with Apple on her last release, 1999's critically lauded, commercially overlooked album When the Pawn....

One song, "Better Version of me," began as a litany of personal put-downs. "By the last verse, I realized that all the qualities that make you feel unequipped in life can be turned around to your own advantage," she says. "It actually became sort of optimistic."

Apple chalks that up less to a newly rosy outlook than to just growing up. "I'm still the same," says the 26 year old. "I still have horrible days, but I started to look at them with more appreciation as an observer. Rather than 'I feel horrible and I want to die,' now its more like, 'Isn't that interesting how I want to die right now? I wonder how I'll feel five minutes from now?' "

The new songs are filled with woodwinds and strings, but they're never limp. As for the album's title, Apple is keeping mum.

"If you knew what the title was," smiling mysteriously, "you would know why I can't tell you."

Right.

Oliver Jones.

10-22-2002 Hello--I am at home getting my life in order so I can go on the road for a couple of months with the wee red head (a.k.a Tori). My recording with Fiona Apple in L.A. was tragically cut short. I guess she was trying to break up a fight involving her dog and got bit on the arm pretty bad.So she got stitched up and is going to be fine-- after a few weeks of healing and some physical therapy she will be tinkling the ivories like the supagirl that she is. I guess we will continue the recording after the 1st leg of the Tori tour.----I am really excited to be out playing music in front of people, the last year I have been in recording studios playing with some really great people--but it is not the same as playing live...Bye for now----Matt C

Quote from: neatahwantaOver at http://www.fionahaswings.com , Lane just added three new mp3's of Fiona singing cover tunes with Jon and Grant Lee Phillips at Largo.

The latest covers songs are "I'll Be Home For Christmas", "River Stay Away From My Door" (written by Mort Dixon & Harry M. Woods, had to look that one up), and "Just a Man In Love" (Buddy Holly cover).  Jazzy-popular music from the way-back machine.

Download 'em and enjoy.

Quote from: neatahwantaFiona Apple Ripe for Return
New album coming this winter

Fiona Apple has some good news: "We're about two weeks from being done," she says of her long-awaited third record, the follow-up to 1999's When the Pawn . . .. She's working in an Los Angeles studio again with producer Jon Brion (Aimee Mann) on the album, which is now likely to come out in February.

The still-untitled LP is tentatively set to include ten tracks. "When I've written ten songs, I'm done," Apple says. Among the songs guaranteed to make the final cut are "Extraordinary," a Tin Pan Alley-esque blend of Tom Waits and Vaudeville, and "Better," an OutKast-like deluge of beats.

This record is the third collaboration for the twenty-six-year-old Apple and Brion, and this time the two have really hit a groove. "Over time," she says, "working with Jon and [drummer] Matt Chamberlain, I know what they're going to have fun doing when I'm writing."

During the time between When the Pawn . . . and the upcoming set, Apple and Brion met for lunch weekly, but "not to discuss work." Then about a year ago, Apple says, "I started to get the itch" after a two-year break during which she did things like hang out with family, friends and her dogs, read, take walks, ride her bike, and work on her art.

Apple didn't listen to much music during the break, but given the disparate sounds of "Extraordinary" and "Better," she did successfully open her work up to new ideas and influences. "I guess it's all over the place," she says. "But I'm too close to the songs . . . You'll just have to decide for yourself."

It's been four years and one big meltdown since Fiona Apple released her brilliant When the Pawn..., which was nearly eclipsed by negative PR after she threw an epic tantrum on stage at New York's Roseland bllroom.  Now, the angsty Apple is prepping her third CD, Extraordinary Machine.  It's her first work since her breakup with director P.T. Anderson, her longtime beau, so Apple has plenty of heartache to work with.  "I tend to write about being hurt, but ther's always anger in it." she says "I cant let myself just be absolutely sad."

short Q & A in new Entertainment Weekly.  slated for 'early summer' release.  (i'll believe it when i see it).

Sullen Girl, Interrupted  Spin Magazine

The last time Fiona Apple released an album, upstart violent femme Avril Lavigne was still singing church hymns in her Sunday best.  Except for a duet with the late Johnny Cash and her charming cover of "Frosty the Snowman", we havent heard a peep out of the once unsilenceable bad, bad girl since 1999's When The Pawn...  "I guess I decided to take a break", Apple tells us with uncharacteristic breeziness.  "Do you ever feel like you've said everything?  You think, 'I'm never going to be able to write anything because theres nothing left.'" Well, sure, but we have a monthly deadline.  "You have to let life happen before you can do something else," she observes.  "I guess I made the decidsion to do that."  Life as it's wont to do, happened to Apple, despite her best effots (she lives in LA but doesnt drive, rarely works the nightlife circuit, owns a TV that she claims gets no channels, and doesnt listen to the radio), and she's begun work on her third album-tentatively titled "Extraordinary Machine" and due later this year-with producer Jon Brion.  Semiretirement has turned Apple into something of a bookworm.  While her first two albums wer preoccupied with heartbreak and rage, tweedy subjects such as etymology and chromotology now inform many of her tracks.  "Threres a song called 'Beter Version of Me' that is jampacked with stuff from word-and-phrase origin books", she says.  "Another called 'Red, Red, Red' is inspired by a book about optical illusions."  If you're worried about all this maturity becoming dreary, Apple promisess us that another newie titled "Oh Well" is a "pretty standard you hurt me ballad".  Hell hath no fury like a bibliophile scorned.

from fionahaswings.com:

Fiona Apple's new album, Extraordinary Machine, has been shelved by Sony, according to a recent Rolling Stone interview (http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story?id=5937368) with Jon Brion, her producer. Supposedly, Sony cannot find a single and is unsure how to promote the record. There is no word yet on how long this will take.

relevant quote from the article:

Quote from: Rolling Stone articleSony has yet to find the magic song on Brion's latest production, Apple's new record. The album has been finished for months but sits on the shelves at the label as, Brion says, execs search for a single.

"It's a done record," he says. "They'll take whatever amount of time they'll take deciding how to promote it. And who knows? Those things are a black hole."

I didn't notice any awkward lyrics or metaphors, but that's probably because I was so bowled over by the construction of that song. It's ...um...extraordinary. I love music that isn't predictable...where I can't wrap my head around it instantly, or go pick it out on the piano after one listen. There's a lot of genius in this.

Just when my anticipation had waned...this comes along.

I'm a huge Fiona fan, but I must say, I prefer her darker stuff (huh, isn't that all of it?).  But I'm listening to this song for the second time and it's growing on me.  It has a little bit of an old musical feel to it.  She's so fucking talented.  Ok I'm listening and changing my mind completely.  I can feel this song.  "I am the baby of the family it happens... so"

Ok, it's good.

yeah, hey thanks for the heads up on the lesser quality tracks as that coincidentally were the versions i downloaded earlier.  i actually had to leave as soon as i got them and posted the news so i'm just really hearing it for the first time now.  it sounds much better than i had thought it might from the earlier leaked versions.  i dont even remember what the hell i was looking for when i came across it.  i was pretty shocked to find it though because i hadnt heard any word of the entire thing leaking and had been checking soulseek every once in a while without any luck.  so, glad to be of some help here, guys.

On Geekdreams the first track "Not About Love" doesn't work, it plays the first few seconds and cuts out, or at least it did that for me.

The rest work fine.

I can see why a record label would call this "unmarketable".  It is not bite sized and easy to swallow.  This album makes me want to slink around the house barefoot with a cigarette in one hand, and a Manhattan in the other.

Fiona's music is an experience, not a hit single.
(I'm still partial to When The Pawn though...)

i'm so glad that its at least been leaked...

Best album of the year (so far). I wish I hadn't heard Extraordinary Machine and Better Version of me out of context of the rest of the album, because if I'd listened to the whole thing straight through for the first time with no idea what to expect, I think..well, I have no idea what I'd think. But this is one beautiful record.

but like sum great albums, it will take many listens to really distinguish between tracks. a lot of it sounds like she never got off the piano and just kept recording the next song with the same music and everything. i dunno, i hav to read the lyrics as well.

yes.  thats my favorite song so far.

There are four songs that I can't get enough of: Not About Love is one of them, along Extraordinary Machine and Better Version Of Me; the fourth is Oh Well, which has that perfectly guttural orchestral climax in the last third that takes my breath away.

Pubrick is right, many of the other songs blend in to each other, which isn't a bad thing. I don't mind listening to them over and over again to discover their subtleties.

Liner notes would be nice, though.

Now Sony has even more of a reason not to release the album, though.  For every ten people who were going to buy it, now only maybe four will since it's been leaked.  Only a few people would download it, and then buy it when it comes out (if it ever does).

The album is pretty good.  I hope Fiona gets to see some money from it, or at least, y'know, gets to work again.

the thing that disappoints me is that it seems she could be doing more about it than she has been.  its been done for nearly two years right?  and where has she been during this time?  if she really believed in the album she should've put it up on her website and started touring behind it and forced sony into releasing it.  or said, hey, let me buy it back from you and i'll take it to another company who will release it.  or, if none of those would've worked, ATLEAST done something to make a little publicity like playing the album in its entirety like every weekend at Largo for a few months and then letting the album spread through the leaked live recordings and such.  i dunno, you havent even seen an interview from her about this stuff in forever.  it seems like she's either just given up on it, or afraid to speak up about it.  either way, there is no reason for someone as awesome as her to just fall off the planet like this.

An emotional artist finds release -- yet doesn't
Fiona Apple's new album, leaked on the Internet, reveals more freedom. Still, there's no CD through her label. Source: Los Angeles Times

Nobody's taking credit for spilling Fiona Apple's unreleased (and possibly unfinished) third album all over the Internet, but the action has upped the ante in what's become pop music's biggest art-versus-commerce dust-up since Wilco versus Reprise Records and Danger Mouse versus the Beatles.

Now Apple's record company is cracking down, she has clammed up and fans are still manning the barricades.

The New York-bred singer-songwriter whose first two albums, 1997's "Tidal" and 1999's "When the Pawn ... ," made her a commercial and critical success is a perfect centerpiece for this drama. Edgy and vulnerable, mercurial and uncompromising, she's the heroine of a fervent cult and a classic potential victim of the crass music business.

Despite her initial impact — "Tidal" sold nearly 3 million copies and earned her a Grammy for the song "Criminal" — Apple was a high-maintenance renegade, refusing to play by the record industry's rules. That earned her ridicule from the mainstream, and intense loyalty from fans who identified with her idealism and emotional openness.

So it's understandable that there would be high anticipation for her first new music in six years. Trouble is, with both Apple and her label, Sony's Epic Records, declining interview requests, it's unclear what really happened to it.

Fans who are protesting with demonstrations at Sony headquarters and petitions at www.freefiona.com and by sending apples to Epic executives say that the singer turned in her album, "Extraordinary Machine," in May 2003 and that the label decided not to release it because they didn't think it would sell enough to justify its costs. Sources at the label contend that Apple's submission was a work-in-progress, not a completed recording.

The matter became an issue when two tracks from the collection appeared on the Internet last year, followed by the entire 11-song album earlier this year. A Seattle radio disc jockey, Andrew Harms, also obtained a copy of the album and began playing it.

Epic's only comment has been two vague statements. The first, issued in February, concluded, "Fiona has not yet delivered her next album to Epic, but we join music lovers everywhere in eagerly anticipating her next release." A shorter statement, released Thursday, said simply: "Epic is continuing to work with Fiona's management toward the release of this project."

And for the last couple of weeks the company has been warning websites that have posted the music to remove those files or face legal action. Many have pulled the songs, though disc jockey Harms said Thursday that he is still playing the album on Seattle's End Radio (107.7 FM) and has heard nothing from the label.

If the saga is cloudy, the music itself is unambiguously potent. One rumor floating through the instant mythology of "Extraordinary Machine" is that Apple herself wasn't happy with it. But if the album eventually comes out in anything close to the form that could be downloaded from the Internet, it will mark a striking artistic advance for an already formidable musician.

In her first two albums, Apple emerged as a songwriter who could twist the conventions of the confessional lyric into intriguingly distinctive shapes, drawing on a dysfunctional upbringing to bring a rare candor to her scenarios of romantic obsession. The vehemence of her delivery made it seem as if a therapist's couch must have been part of the studio furnishing.

Her singing wasn't what you'd expect from such a waiflike figure — her voice was authoritative, low, and smoky with jazzy inflections, evoking comparisons to Nina Simone. On "Pawn," producer Jon Brion's pop-cabaret instrumental backing was unobtrusive, framing her singing with a flavorful but restrained mix of pop instrumentation and string arrangements.

Since then, Brion has crafted quirky soundtracks for such films as "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Punch-Drunk Love" and "I {heart} Huckabees," and he's brought some of that cinematic sensibility to his new collaboration with Apple.

In "Not About Love," the strings are as vivid and dimensional as an animated cartoon character, serving not as a static frame but as a true foil for Fiona, stomping ominously into the Randy Newman-like bridge, then billowing out into an aural ballroom dance.

The scrap-yard symphony of the bouncy "Used to Love Him" also evokes grainy old cartoons, and in its structure and scope the title song suggests a Broadway production number. Underscoring a new search for variety, "Get Him Back" is a ramshackle rocker built on the "Wooly Bully" riff, and "Better Version of Me" is soaked with chimes and carnival-like swirls.

Apple's singing is supple, spontaneous and eccentrically personal throughout the 11 songs, and Brion's more aggressive approach draws out more of her humor, always a crucial if subtle ingredient in her music.

Not that she's turned all sunny. Through all these stretches, Apple chronicles obsession masterfully, capturing the exhilarating balance of excitement and terror that comes with not being in control. "I think he let me down when he didn't disappoint me," she sings in "Get Him Back," distilling her perverse need to be let down.

And in the six-minute blues/noir epic "Oh Sailor," she offers what may be her ultimate self-defining verse:

Everything good I deem too good to be true

Everything else is just a bore

Everything I have to look forward to

Has a pretty painful and very imposing before.

The fans might be chanting "Free Fiona," but it's pretty clear from this music that she's been freed as an artist.

So Fiona Apple performed at Largo last night with Jon Brion.  She performed last Friday too and the word was that was so good they decided to do a more formal performance, dress for the occassion and film it.  There were two cameras.  Fiona looked and sounded terrific.  Jon and Fiona also said, in what seemed to be an official statement, from the stage that the album is coming out soon.

Other news about the album that I don't believe has been updated on xixax at least, is that Fiona went back in the studio and did some work with moogy producer and Jon Brion compadre, Brian Kehew.  It has been rumored that she will be releasing two versions of EM, another rumor is that there are some completely new songs and EM will be quite different from the leak.  So far, the album is still called Extraordinary Machine.  Seems likely we'll finally see a new release from Fiona Apple before the end of this year whatever the case and I won't be a bit surprised if the bonus material includes live DVD performances from Largo.

Setlist (order may be screwy because I was a bit dazed):
"Extraordinary Machine" with only Jon's acoustic guitar accompaniment.
"River Stay Away From My Door" also with only acoustic guitar.
"Paper Bag"  Here I believe Benmont Tench stepped up to piano, and Nickle Creek also came up to play their respective instruments: violin, mandolin, acoustic guitar and Jon also stayed on acoustic.
"Tonight You Belong To Me"  Same players and several also provided harmony vocals.
"Fast as You Can"  I believe this was just Jon on acoustic, Chris Thile on mandolin, and Fiona singing, though Benmont might have been there on piano.  This was completely awesome.  Chris does a very awesome version of this himself but it was a real treat to see Fiona singing it of course.
Fiona left the stage briefly but came back to sing "Everyday" and I think everyone was back onstage for that one and some provided harmonies.

It was a good night.   :-D

Fiona Apple Album to be Officially Released (Finally!)
Source: Pitchfork

Fiona has been freed! And it turns out she was holding herself hostage this whole time. According to a press release on her website, seductively eccentric piano thrush Fiona Apple will FINALLY release her third full-length, Extraordinary Machine, on October 4 on Epic. As everybody and her mom knows by now, an early version of the album has been floating around on file-sharing networks for eons, with rumors that evil label execs were keeping the collection of quirky post-cabaret ditties locked in the vaults because they weren't commercial enough. Not so! Apparently, Apple just hadn't finished the record-until now. The Extraordinary Machine you're going to have to pay for (at least until somebody leaks it, too) will feature just two of the tracks us pirates are familiar with, alongside new recordings of nine of the previously leaked songs, and one new tune, "Parting Gift". And lookee here, you can listen to "Parting Gift", as well as the rejiggered version of "O' Sailor" on Apple's website and Myspace page. iTunes will begin selling the two tracks together as one of them "bundle" things tomorrow, with other online music stores hawking them separately.

The new Extraordinary Machine was produced by Mike Elizondo, whose name you might recognize from the credits on various Dr. Dre-related records. (Fiona goes gangsta!) Soundtrack superstar/Kanye-friend Jon Brion helmed the leaked version, but the official album will sound "radically different," Elizondo told the New York Times. "Everything was done from scratch." Mmm...fresh-baked Apple pie, made from scratch. Can't wait to dive in.

NO JON BRION!  HOLY SHIT!

Fiona Apple Completes Long Awaited New Album Extraordinary Machine New Fiona Apple Website Launches With Two New Tracks

New York, NY – Acclaimed artist Fiona Apple has completed her highly anticipated third album Extraordinary Machine and it will be released by Epic Records on October 4, 2005. Extraordinary Machine, produced by Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Eminem and 50 Cent) and co-produced by Brian Kehew, contains twelve new tracks from this groundbreaking artist.

"Now that my album is finally finished, I am very, very excited to have people hear what we did – I am so proud of it, and all of us who worked on it." says Fiona Apple.

On Monday, August 15, Fiona Apple's new official web site will launch at www.Fiona-Apple.com unveiling music and album artwork from Extraordinary Machine. Fans visiting the site will be the first ones to hear two songs in their entirety from the new album: "O' Sailor" and "Parting Gift." In addition to the launch of the site, there will be an online promotion allowing fans to enter to win the new CD and a chance to see Fiona Apple live in concert.

Also on Monday, fans will also be able to listen to the track "O' Sailor" at online social networking destination, www.myspace.com. On the following day, Tuesday, August 16, various digital music stores will make "O' Sailor," available for download and Apple's iTunes Music Store will offer an exclusive bundle download of "O' Sailor" coupled with "Parting Gift."

Fiona Apple established herself as a visionary singer/songwriter at the age of nineteen with her debut album Tidal in 1996. This stunning album went on to earn her a Grammy Award in 1998 for "Best Female Rock Vocal Performance" establishing her as an uncompromising and original artist gaining intensely loyal fans all over the world . Fiona's second album, When the Pawn.....was released in 1999 showcasing Fiona's edgy and elegant musical genius. Fiona Apple's highly touted albums and captivating videos have earned her numerous accolades from music fans and the music industry alike including two MTV Music Video Awards and two Grammy nominations and sales of over 5 million albums around the world.

little more from NY Times...

Mike Elizondo, the album's producer, said most of the songs sound "radically different" from the earlier, leaked renditions, which Ms. Apple had made with the producer Jon Brion. Mr. Elizondo said that he had listened to the earlier cuts, but "once we headed off in our direction I didn't go back to reference them."

"Everything was done from scratch," he added.

Though the leak began with just two tracks, eventually 11 wound up on the Internet. Ms. Apple was already several months into rerecording many of them with Mr. Elizondo, who has been known primarily for his work as a session musician and writer for the rap megaproducer Dr. Dre.

When the earlier versions were leaked, "for a split second I was like, 'are we going to get to keep working on this?' " Mr. Elizondo said. But "there wasn't even a moment where anybody said anything," he continued. "I think from right out of the gate, this is the collection of songs she wanted for her record."

WHO IS THIS ELIZONDO GUY?!?  HE SOUNDS LIKE A DICK!  BRION MUST BE CRUSHED!

last bit here from Billboard...

Two cuts -- the title track and "Waltz" -- are holdovers from the Jon Brion-helmed sessions that leaked earlier in the year. Another, "Parting Gift," is a new solo piano-and-vocal tune captured on the first take. The rest of "Extraordinary Machine" was produced by Mike Elizondo and Brian Kehew and is made up of the other nine songs that made the rounds online.

Earlier this year, fans seized upon the notion that Epic had rejected the original "Extraordinary Machine" and organized a Web site (FreeFiona.com) and a protest outside the company's New York office in the hopes of bringing the album to the marketplace. But in truth, Apple was not happy enough with the Brion-produced versions to release them. In April 2004, she sought out Elizondo, who played bass on two songs from her 1999 album "When the Pawn...," to help her re-imagine the material.

"That's essentially what we did up until a few months ago, when she felt like everything was ready to move forward," Elizondo tells Billboard.com. "I have a studio at my house, so we added all of her piano, her vocals and live drums to the things I'd already created from scratch using programmed beats. Rather than experimenting in the studio, we tried to get blueprints for each of the songs and then once everything was ready to move forward, we went in and did the finishing touches."

Although he listened to the original versions once or twice "just to get the scope of the arrangement and the melody," Elizondo says he has not "gone back and compared each song. But, there's definitely some things that are far-out experiments and things that turned out really exciting."

"All in all, it's a Fiona Apple record," he continues. "She has a very distinct style of writing and her melodies are amazing. Her chord progressions are incredible. It's not a drastic departure, but within that, there are some elements you might not have heard on a previous Fiona Apple recording."

The confusion about what exactly was going on with "Extraordinary Machine" was complicated by the fact that neither Apple nor Epic made any public statements about the situation. Elizondo acknowledges it was an unusual environment in which to be working.

"My own personal feeling was, on one side, it was a little disheartening knowing there were these versions of the songs out there while we were working on the record," he says. "But on the other side, I looked at it as, it was very admirable she has this amazing core of fans. The way they interpreted it was, the label isn't putting out her record, so we're going to do it for her. That's very admirable. But as time goes on, these fans will understand this is the album she wants to put out."

The first "official" taste of the new album will be available later today (Aug. 15) on Apple's Web site, which will be streaming "Parting Gift" and "O, Sailor." The tracks will be available for purchase tomorrow via Apple's iTunes Music Store.

And while no details have yet been nailed down, Apple looks ready to return to live performance for the first time in years.

"She's expressed a great deal of excitement with the finished product," Elizondo offers. "I've offered to put a band together as well as be a part of that band myself on bass. I've already put out some feelers to local musicians in L.A. that would probably comprise the band I'm thinking of. But there are no performances set in stone. A lot of this material is very much rhythm section-oriented. The parts will really lend themselves to being played live. It will be a lot of fun."

jon brion has this to say about the leaked version of extraordinary machine:

"There's music on there that wasn't even part of [what I recorded]. It's wrong," he said. "It's not like, 'I don't quite like the mix,' " he continued, affecting a whiny voice. "I wasn't happy with [the leak] cause I don't like those versions. It's stuff that doesn't reflect what we recorded, for the most part, except for the stuff that's just her and an orchestra. That's just right — but as far as the rest of it, it doesn't reflect what I recorded."

Not about love was the best song on the Brion album, now it's the worst song ever recorded.

Shes lost her damn mind.

Maya seems to be doing better than ever.

If you guys had never heard the Brion version, you would be loving that song right now.  There's nothing wrong with it beyond being different.  And the stupid video.  There is something wrong with that.

Holy shit did Elizondo add a huge bass line to "Not About Love" or what? Wow! I'm in agreement with most but strangely I like the new version of this song as well. It was a mistake to remove the strings though. Keep the bass line and the strings. I've decided that Elizondo's version of "Oh Sailor" is better than Brion's.

All the new Weezer stuff sound as if it's part of that SNL skit Sing Along with The Drunken Asses, just a bunch of assholes yelling half remembered lyrics..

"Ohhhhh you wanna be a Big Shot- Bleep Blop, DaDA Duh...."

I like the lyrics, and the beat is still "catchy" but it doesn't carry half the emotion that the stringed version did.  The fact that she recorded the song so beautifully and then decided to fuck it up makes this newer one more despicable.

Granted, if the newer one were the only one I'd ever hear, then it'd be fine.  I'm not so upset with the new version, I just feel like she's withholding a much better version.

Yeah, it's not as  gutteral, but it's still alright. I don't like how slick it sounds (Rachael Yamagata, anyone?), but the songwriting still shines through. For example, the big out-of-left-field tempo change is still brilliant, despite the change in instrumentation.

The problem with this, from what I can tell in the short clip, is that there's very little irony to the song anymore. It sounds too happy. That may just be an effect of listening to it while watching the video, though. Speaking of which...

The video would only have worked if they had the guy actually speaking over the lyrics, as if he's reading them aloud simultaneously. Sorta like in the Richard Ashcroft video for A Song For All The Lovers. So, it was a good idea, miserably executed; either that, or it's a joke that no one else finds funny. Nicely edited, though.

FIONA SPEAKS!
Source: Rolling Stone

Singer-songwriter recounts her five years out of the spotlight

Fiona Apple's third studio album, the revised Extraordinary Machine, is now finally slated for release on October 4th -- years after her last effort, 1999's When the Pawn.... So what has the enigmatic, twenty-seven-year-old singer-songwriter been up to for all that time? Her prolonged absence from the spotlight can be divided into three phases, Apple tells Rolling Stone.

Phase One: "I Don't Care." After touring behind When the Pawn..., Apple bought a home in Los Angeles. "The first couple of years, I didn't have anything left in me to write about," she says. "That was a good thing, because it meant I'd done my job on the last batch of songs. I was riding a wave of independence. I wasn't trying to write; I just figured if the songs came to me, they came to me, and if not, 'Oh, well, it's been fun.'"

Phase Two: "Come On, Now." Apple had been having lunch with producer Jon Brion every Tuesday when Brion finally said, "Let's get started again." "I gathered scraps for songs," she says. "And I ended up writing the rest on the way, a totally new approach for me. The upside was that I'd finished all these songs that otherwise might've been left in 'I don't care' land; the downside was that I didn't have enough time to live with the songs before recording them, so I really didn't know what I wanted."

Brion had introduced Apple to producer Mike Elizondo, who has worked with Dr. Dre and 50 Cent. "Fiona, Jon and I chilled for the better part of the day," says Elizondo. Five months later, he got a call from Apple's management. "She said, 'I have this batch of songs; I'd like to come up with different versions,'" Elizondo says. "Jon was not involved, but he was cool on all fronts. I took a song at a time, learned it, then from scratch made different versions, different grooves. Fiona was open to experiment. There were no boundaries."

Phase Three: "The Untitled Phase." Fiona worked with Elizondo at Phantom Studio -- located in the back yard of his home in L.A.'s Westlake Village -- laying down piano and vocals. ("Extraordinary Machine" and "Waltz" are untouched from the Brion sessions leaked online earlier this year. And FYI: Apple's label, Sony, never shelved the record.) Live drums were overdubbed by Abe Laboriel Jr. and ?uestlove of the Roots.

"I've got a bundle of songs of which I am exceedingly proud," Apple says. "And I'm excited to see how I handle the whole trip this time around, being that I'm finally at the point where I can call myself an adult without losing myself to the giggles."

Extraordinary Machine
O Sailor
Parting Gift
Fast As You Can
Paper Bag
Waltz (Better Than Fine)
You Belong To Me (cover)

fiona was really nervous, but sounded great though.  i had about 4 1/2 seconds to talk to her before like 4 guys in suits basically pushed me away, but i think i said something like "thanks for doing this, i've never seen you before, whenthepawn is one of my favorite albums ever, please come back soon and do a full show".  she is BEAUTIFUL in person.  it was cool meeting her, even under the worst circumstances like these.  brion disappeared after the set or i would've liked to talk to him.

listening to the new version of the album was like seeing zombie versions of  everybody i love stumbling around mindlessly

i'm not just saying that because i've heard the old one so many times, which i have, but i tried to give it a chance.  i tried so hard but the new mixes make her songs sound like soft rock/children's songs. it's not terrible, but...it's...something...

edit
i should add, though, that the untouched brion versions of extraordinary machine and waltz were left alone and sound magnificent properly mixed.  hurrah

Having listened to the whole thing, it's really not too much different from the original. That Brion's version of Ext. Machine kicks off the album is sort of disconcerting - because it sounds so good in its finished form (as Sickfins mentioned) that it makes you wonder what the rest of the album would have sounded like if they had finished it together. As for the rest of it, some songs are worse, some are better, but for the most part the difference wasn't huge. If you didn't like the album to begin with (P), you won't like this. If you did like it - well, you'll either enjoy it well enough or else just stick to the bootlegs. I like the bootleg more - but I'll still be buying a copy of this version, because I'm not a hypocrite.

A free Fiona returns
The tumultuous saga of her new album behind her, the singer is happy to be back from a difficult six-year break.
By Richard Cromelin, Times Staff Writer

Fiona Apple sat bolt upright, her hands clenched on the table in front of her, her pale green eyes darting nervously back and forth.

No, the notoriously volatile singer-songwriter wasn't having one of her meltdowns. She was just using body language to illustrate how her approach to life has changed.

"Before, I'm kind of like this," she said as she maintained her tense posture. Then she eased back slowly and luxuriantly into her chair in the lobby of a posh Santa Monica hotel. "Right now, I'm kind of like this. I'm riding with the waves a little bit more now instead of trying to control them."

Given the tumultuous saga of her new album "Extraordinary Machine," which comes out Tuesday on Epic Records, the last thing you'd expect to find right now is a relaxed, "more solid" Fiona Apple. But there she was, animated but easygoing during an afternoon interview this week.

That's good news and bad news for her unusually fervent fans, who dote on her like a fragile sibling but also are drawn to her mercurial nature, her public outspokenness, the raw-nerves emotion of her quirky, confessional pop-cabaret music.

Apple, 28, has had plenty of time for psychological makeover. It's been six years since her last album, "When the Pawn ... ," a period of pure rest and relaxation followed by a high drama involving creative disorientation and conflicts between art and commerce, with a cast of characters that included record producers, label executives and activist fans who organized a "Free Fiona" campaign.

It got so bad at one point that Apple actually quit.

"I was just standing in my kitchen, and I called up my manager and I said, 'OK just tell them I'm not gonna record anymore,' " Apple said. " 'Don't call me back, I'm gonna unplug my phone because I'll doubt what I do if you give me five seconds to doubt it ' I walked over to my friend's house and went, 'OK, I just quit.... I feel great, it's done.' "

Apple's post-"Pawn" period had begun more placidly, with the singer taking a long break after completing her touring for the 1999 album. Eventually, her friend and producer Jon Brion persuaded her to start work on a new album, even though Apple wasn't sure the songs she'd been developing were ready to be recorded.

They had some tracks to play for Epic executives in mid-2003. Brion said at the time that the label rejected them as uncommercial, comments that sparked the fans' grass-roots campaign to get the record released. But Apple, who remained silent during the controversy, says now that she was uneasy with the music.

"For some reason my brain stopped working at a certain point, and I wasn't able to pick out what I liked or didn't like," she said this week. "I had no idea what I wanted, because I think that I wasn't ready to do it again, and I think that I just shut down....

"I didn't know the songs well enough when we started to record them, so I just wasn't able to be the captain. And as a result it just got a little bit confused and the songs got away from me."

Things stayed in limbo for a while, then Apple started redoing the songs with producer Mike Elizondo, a Dr. Dre associate. His simpler approach brought the work into focus for her, but then she was slapped in the face by word from Epic that they could record only one song at a time, with the label checking up on each one.

It was an insulting restriction to put on an established, free-flying artist, and that's when Apple quit, disappearing for several months until media coverage of the "Free Fiona" drive and the leak of the Brion recordings to the Internet and radio created a little leverage for her.

Though relations with Epic were restored (Apple says she later learned that the one-track-at-a-time order was a miscommunication) it still took some doing to get her back in the studio. She says if it weren't for her friend Brian Kehew, who promised to participate and is credited as a co-producer, there might have been no "Extraordinary Machine."

"Even then I was feeling ... 'I don't need this, I'm gonna go do something else with my life,' " Apple said with a flash of the old fire. Why step back in the ... quicksand again?"

In the sun-dappled lobby, Apple seemed to be glad that she had. She's proud of the album, whose songs focus on romantic conflict and breakup — she said that after reviews started appearing she called her ex-boyfriend, filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson, and assure him that they weren't all about him.

But there's also the closing "Waltz (Better Than Fine)," which she says is "all about the importance of doing nothing," and the title song, a manifesto of self-reliance directed at "people in my life that just are worried about me a little bit too much."

So what did the singer learn about herself and her art from the album ordeal?

"I'm not gonna sit here and say, 'Well next time I'm gonna wait till I'm ready.' Because it was all worth it.... I'm happy that I wasn't ready and that we made those recordings and that I went through all that stuff, I'm happy that I got the opportunity to make a decision like 'OK I quit,' and to know that faced with a decision like that I went the right way — not for my career but for myself.

"I'm glad that I got to see that if you do things for the right reason, pretty much most of the time things turn out the right way. And even if they don't turn out exactly how you want them, you still feel good about yourself."

Fiona Apple's 'Machine' needed a push to get going

NEW YORK — Fiona Apple is curled up on a couch, fighting back tears. But it's not what you think.

When the diminutive, doe-eyed singer/songwriter rose to fame as a teenager in the late '90s, many perceived her as angry, troubled or at least colorfully neurotic. Her precocious lyrics reveled in baiting and scorning lovers, while in interviews, she regaled reporters with accounts of having been raped as a girl.

Apple, now 28, clearly hasn't lost her flair for drama. But these days, she is more likely to attract it than be consumed by it.

Consider the story behind Extraordinary Machine, Apple's first new CD in six years. Recording sessions began in 2002, with Apple and longtime producer Jon Brion working on and off. Apple says both she and her label were less than thrilled with the results.

"Sony didn't think there was a hit," says the singer, who is signed to Epic Records, a division of Sony Music. "And I wanted to redo some songs."

Producer Mike Elizondo (Eminem, 50 Cent) came on board, and Apple says the label suggested "that I could maybe hand in one song at a time. But I thought that was an incredibly bad idea, because it implied that if they didn't like what I handed in, they could try to change it. Or they could say, 'You can't have any more money, and we're shelving it.' "

(Epic spokeswoman Lois Najarian says: "Things were definitely miscommunicated during the time when Fiona was switching producers, and unfortunately she was led to believe that the label was only allowing her to record one new version at a time. That was surely not the case.")

Recalls Apple: "At that point I said, 'I quit.' " But an anonymous admirer had other ideas. While on her new computer one day, Apple discovered that some of her early, Brion-produced tracks had been leaked online. "It was the weirdest feeling, like somebody had taken my diary and printed it."

The singer soon learned that fans had started a "Free Fiona" movement and sent letters, apples and drawings of apples to Sony's offices. "I remember thinking it was ridiculous and funny. Here I was, jobless, sitting around in my bathrobe watching TV. But then I started crying, because I thought, 'Oh, my God, these people care so much.' I feel so moved by that."

Apple's gift to the faithful, the finished version of Machine, arrives Tuesday, and the album — including the biting single Parting Gift— confirms that she hasn't lost her flair for confessional candor. "I started writing songs and continue to write because it's how I deal with my life. I don't make up stories."

She prefers not to discuss in specific terms how ex-boyfriends such as filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson influenced her lyrics. "I've been in other relationships since Paul. He's been a big part of my life, and he's a very good friend now. But the songs are informed by all my relationships. There are certain lines that are directly about one person or situation, so directly that I'm sure those people recognize it. And that may be why I do this, to get my point across — though not in a mean way."

The singer won't say whether anyone special is keeping her company these days, other than her dog, Janet, a pit bull mix she took in "because no one claimed her or wanted her." She has resolved to forge ahead with her career for the time being.

"For a while I was looking forward to having to get another job," Apple says. "I had this fantasy about applying to this place in upstate New York, Green Chimneys. They do occupational therapy with kids, using farm animals. I thought that was something I could be passionate about. But music just kept on coming back."

Re-emerging After a Strange Silence
Source: New York Times

Fiona Apple, the soul-baring singer who hasn't released an album since 1999, wishes she had a more compelling explanation for her absence. "The truth is that I haven't been doing anything that interesting," she said, shrugging one afternoon late last week. "I got off the road last time and I just felt like not writing and not doing anything for a long time."

Ms. Apple will finally be back next week with the release of "Extraordinary Machine," the third album in her decade-long career. And judging from the 500 fans who flocked to the Virgin Megastore in Union Square in Manhattan on Tuesday to hear her sing, her return is none too soon.

Ms. Apple attained cause-célèbre status earlier this year when fans pressured her record company, Sony, to release the album, an early, unfinished version of which had been leaked on the Internet.

She called her decision to step back into the limelight a "really big experiment," given her past public struggles with popular success. Will the touring, television appearances and photo shoots cause her to "freak out again," she wondered? Or will she manage to find some pleasure in it all?

While promoting her first album her attitude was, "Please like me, please understand me," Ms. Apple, 28, said chuckling. "The second time was: 'Please don't misunderstand me again. Please understand me this time.' And this time it's really about me taking something that's been so stressful in the past and making it joyful. I don't want to be suffering all the time."

Suffering - Ms. Apple has made a cottage industry of it. She even addresses her penchant for pain on the title track of "Extraordinary Machine": "I seem to you to seek a new disaster everyday."

But she writes: "I mean to prove I mean to move in my own way, and say,/I've been getting along for long before you came into play."

In 1996 she made her debut with "Tidal," which sold three million copies and won a Grammy. Her second effort, "When the Pawn. ..." - the unabridged title is 90 words long - was hailed by critics but proved a commercial disappointment.

It did not help that Ms. Apple had a reputation for being difficult, a tortured soul with attitude to spare. In one of her more infamous tantrums, she berated audience members at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony for worshiping celebrities. A Manhattan concert in 2000 was cut short when the singer, upset over sound difficulties, began sobbing uncontrollably onstage. Ms. Apple, who admits to being emotional ("it runs in my family"), said she was cast as a troubled loose cannon by the media because controversy makes great headlines.

"I was the right girl for the part," she conceded. "I cried a lot. I said a lot of stuff. There were lots of great rumors about me. Everything I did was put in bold print and italics."

It is difficult to believe that this tiny sliver of a woman once caused such a big commotion. Dressed in a floor-length peasant skirt, T-shirt and faded navy-blue hoodie, a genial Ms. Apple spoke in sprawling, uninterrupted sentences as she sat in a restaurant at her Midtown hotel. Thoughtful and introspective, she was all too willing to have her haunting blue-silver eyes look inward.

During her sabbatical, she said, she would often sit in her backyard in Venice, Calif., thinking and playing with pine cones. "I was making little pine-cone people with razor blades," Ms. Apple said, raking her fingers through her wavy brown hair. "That's all I did."

Her inertia did not sit well with some in her immediate circle. They accused Ms. Apple of being lazy, crazy and unproductive, she said. "It really hurt a couple of close relationships of mine," said Ms. Apple, who split with her boyfriend Paul Thomas Anderson, the film director, three years ago. "It infuriated me because they couldn't believe that when I'm sitting and thinking that's how I work."

Several years ago she decided that she was ready to begin recording again and called on Jon Brion, who produced "When the Pawn. ..." Their collaboration, while smooth before, was shaky this time. "Jon would play me stuff and I wouldn't be able to tell what I liked and what I didn't like," Ms. Apple said. After emerging from a deep funk, she eventually decided to rerecord her songs with the producer Mike Elizondo, who has worked with Dr. Dre.

According to Ms. Apple, things were going well until executives at Sony began asking her to submit individual songs for their approval. Only then would they determine how much more recording money she would receive. Sony had already sunk nearly $800,000 into recording the original version of "Extraordinary Machine."

"They basically wanted me to audition my songs," Ms. Apple said, visibly offended.

Lois Najarian, a representative for Sony, denies this and blamed Ms. Apple's perception of events on miscommunication. "That was surely not the case," Ms. Najarian said.

Unhappy with what she termed an "unlivable" arrangement, Ms. Apple threatened to abandon the project.

When the Brion-produced version of "Extraordinary Machine" showed up on the Internet earlier this year, Ms. Apple, upset that her unfinished work was available, thought Sony would scrap the album. "Who is going to give me money to make songs that are already out there?" she recalled thinking at the time.

Little did Ms. Apple know that a group of fans was pleading with Sony to release her album, which they thought had been shelved. Both Sony and Ms. Apple say it was not. On the Web site www.freefiona.com they railed against the "corporate giant" standing between them and their beloved.

"Please give us Fiona and we'll give you money back," read one poem posted on the site. Hundreds of foam apples were sent to the company, and in January a dedicated band of protesters, led by the Free Fiona founder Dave Muscato, stood outside the Madison Avenue offices of Sony BMG chanting, "We want Fiona."

She is quick to credit her freefiona fans with her comeback. "It's good to know that if you organize you can make change, because that's certainly not what I was doing," Ms. Apple said, "I was walking away."

tour just announced...

Fiona Apple will begin her first tour in several years Nov. 22 in Portland, Ore. The dates come in support of her third album, "Extraordinary Machine," which is released today (Oct. 4) via Epic. The set already is the top-seller at Apple's iTunes Music Store, according to the label.

Apple admits she is apprehensive about going back on tour after such a long layoff. "I'm slightly terrified," she tells Billboard. "If I'm going to go out and do shows, at a certain point, I'll love it. The first two weeks, you're getting used to it. The thing that I'm terrified about [is that] I'm going to want to include songs from the other albums in the show. I haven't tried to play any of my old songs in years. I'm so afraid of not knowing them."

Apple's touring band has yet to be announced. In August, album co-producer Mike Elizondo told Billboard.com he had "offered to put a band together as well as be a part of that band myself on bass. I've already put out some feelers to local musicians in L.A. that would probably comprise the band I'm thinking of."

On Thursday, Apple will perform and sign autographs at Tower Records in West Hollywood, Calif.
Here are Fiona Apple's tour dates:

Nov. 22: Portland, Ore. (Roseland)
Nov. 23: Seattle (Moore Theatre)
Nov. 25: San Francisco (Warfield Theatre)
Nov. 26: Los Angeles (Wiltern Theatre)
Nov. 28: San Diego (House of Blues)
Nov. 30: Las Vegas (House of Blues)
Dec. 2: Denver (Paramount Theatre)
Dec. 4: Chicago (Riviera Theatre)
Dec. 5: Cleveland (House of Blues)
Dec. 7: Boston (Orpheum Theatre)
Dec. 8-9: Philadelphia (Tower Theatre)
Dec. 11: New York (Nokia Theatre)

Man, not even a stop in Austin? I remember back in 2000 she cancelled her tour the very day the Dallas tickets were going on sale.

I bought the album today and have listened to it once and, hearing it for the first time in full fidelity on a good speaker system, it's wonderful. The only real casualty, I've decided, is Better Version Of Me.

i haven't got a good chance to listen to it yet.
i did watch the Largo performances with JB on the Dual Disc and those are very good. (oh how i wish i could see one of JB's concerts there!).
i downloaded 3 or so of the early versions. the song that really stood out of those is what i think is track 5. did the other version have a lot of bells?
i just remember that being the coolest thing ever.

Are you talking about Tymps (Sick In The Head)?  When I wrote below that the only casualty is Better Version Of Me, what I really meant was this song, which comes right after it ( I guess, after that first listen, my head mixed the production on one with the other). The bells are gone, replaced by really annoying synthetic vibes or something.

Oh Sailor, Parting Gift and (especially) Oh Well are so damn good, though...

yeah, that song. the early version was titled Used to Love Him, I think.
after listening to it more today i love this version as well. i just love the songwriting and the lyrics. then again, i haven't heard the early version in a long time since my computer's been down.

I like how the bootlegs were more piano driven. The released version sounds like a drummer's showcase.  :yabbse-undecided:

I pretty much agree with this from two different reviews.

Slant Magazine
For every song that's been improved there's one that's been unnecessarily tooled with.

ShakingThrough.net
Apart the two versions are about equal, combined they could have been amazing.

I pretty much agree with everything the New Yorker has to say. (http://www.newyorker.com/critics/music/articles/051010crmu_music)

I actually like the percussiveness Mac talks about (aside from those damn clickety vibes on Tymps). Her music, especially When The Pawn, has always been extremely percussive, be it via her piano or that totally awesome extended drum solo on Fast As You Can.

Fans Get a Taste of Apple in L.A.

LOS ANGELES - Several hundred     Fiona Apple fans attended a rare in-store appearance by the elusive singer-songwriter Thursday night. Apple performed a 45-minute set, with most of the material from her just-released CD "Extraordinary Machine."

Apple told AP Television that this was only the second time she'd ever done a concert in a music store.

"I have no idea why I'm doing it, she admitted. "I know what my part of the job is: I'm supposed to write songs and sing them ... There's other people that know what they're doing and they say to do it and so I'm doing it."

Clearly, this wasn't like playing a nightclub or concert hall. "It's really strange to be able to see the people that you're singing in front of," added Apple, referring to the store's bright lights. "I'm not used to that."

"Extraordinary Machine" is her first new CD release since her 1999 album, "When the Pawn Hits the Conflicts...", which was nominated for the 2001 Grammy for best alternative music album, with the track "Paper Bag" nominated for best female rock vocal performance.

Understandably, Apple would want to take time to get the next CD right. But six years? She explained that she was unhappy with her first recordings of the songs on "Extraordinary Machine," but disagreed with her record company on how to re-record them. "So, I said, 'I'd rather do none at all."

Enter Apple's fans, some of whom began a "Free Fiona" campaign targeted at her record company. Apple said those protests helped the album ultimately get redone and released. "They (the fans) made certain people realize that it was probably a good investment."

Indeed, the well-reviewed "Extraordinary Machine" debuted at No. 1 Tuesday on the iTunes album chart, and Apple begins her national concert tour this fall.

Apple noted she's learned a lot from the releases of her previous CDs, the first of which came out when she was a teenager.

"It's easier, it's definitely easier," said Apple, now 28, "because if you spend six years without really knowing whether or not you're going to do another album, I know for sure that if all this were to go away, I'd be just fine. So it's easier, I don't take it all quite so seriously."

she was nice and plump on letterman. he interviewed her for a bit after her performance and i BET it was just to get a nice shot of her eyes, she sung like she was asleep (maybe from listening to all her new songs).

i havn't read all these interviews but what she said on letterman was funny and believable. she's a bum, she wasted 6 years and she realises she coulda done more.. listing what she coulda done: "i could've gone to college.. written a novel..  etc". she sounds happy tho, and looks very hot as usual. oh and letterman stole my bird flu joke  :yabbse-angry: .

from an interview with Jon Brion in the new Time Out New York...

TONY: As a producer, is it a drag not to have the final say about what gets released?

Jon Brion: Yeah, but that's the job description.  You're in charge of all the things that aren't fun to do- but at the end of the day you're really not in charge.  Who wants to waste time making stuff that doesn't get heard?  [Apple] asked me recently to make a mix of all the stuff we did together, so at some point we could put out that version of the record.  There's some very worthwhile stuff there- and the songs that leaked out to the Internet weren't remotely like we recorded them.

That's good news... I finally broke down and bought the cd... most of it's pretty good... I actually like the new version of "Not About Love" better... only problem is, my favorite song in the bootlegs was "Please, Please, Please," and the new version of it SUCKS BALLS.  The song lost all its momentum, and Fiona sounds bored out of her skull in the vocal take they used.

Fiona Apple bruised but ready for tour

Grammy-winning singer Fiona Apple, who went into self-imposed exile for several years from live performing, is terrified at the thought of preparing for her upcoming concert tour, and now it's less than two weeks away.

The tour to promote her 1999 critically acclaimed album, "When the Pawn ..." did not go well. She famously walked off stage at a Manhattan concert in tears after only two songs, never to return that evening. Since 2000, she has avoided the stage.

"It makes me panic inside to think that I'm not going to be able to remember my own songs and the work that it's going to take to learn them again," Apple said in an interview.

Hence her nerves at the prospect of a 13-city U.S. tour, starting on November 22 in Portland, Oregon, to promote her latest album, "Extraordinary Machine." Still, she has not spent much time rehearsing. This tour ends December 11 in New York.

"Did I once sit down at the piano in my house in the last three years and try to work on these songs before the last weekend?" she asked, laughing. "No, I put everything off until the two days before we started rehearsals!"

But after only three days of practice with her band, her jitters are subsiding as her "fingers are remembering" her old songs, such as "Shadowboxer," "Criminal" and "Never is a Promise" from her triple-platinum 1996 debut album "Tidal."

Apple, 28, who grew up in New York and lives in Venice Beach, California, has already had her fair share of drama.

She caused a stir in 1997, appearing looking anorexic and in her underwear for the video of her hit "Criminal." She spoke also openly about being raped at age 12, and she has been described in print as tortured, controversial, volatile, disturbed as well as a magnificent musician.

RALLYING FANS

The release of "Extraordinary Machine" in October comes after rumors began that her record label Sony had rejected it, prompting fans to demand its release on a Web site, www.freefiona.com.

Apple said she was the one, not Sony, who wasn't happy with the initial recordings for the album and caused years of delay, but the pressure from her fans helped Sony come to the realization that she was "a good investment."

Reviews have been positive.

"Apple ... is as musically sure-footed as she is emotionally labile," The New Yorker wrote. "'Extraordinary Machine' is the confident extension of a rich and original musical language that she has been carefully fashioning for the past decade."

While she's feeling less apprehensive about hitting the road again, she does not rule out the possibility of another on-stage "meltdown." Part of her new confidence comes from growing older and part from the realization that she doesn't need music in her life, she said.

"If anything I think I care a lot less about my career than I did years ago," Apple said. "I'm more looking at going on the road as a fun experience, I'm not depending on a great show to make me feel like a great person.

"I spent six years without this life, so I know I can go back to a life without all this crap," she added.

Apple said she doesn't even really listen to other people's music.

Though the headliner on her upcoming tour, Apple will be the opening act for chart-topping British band Coldplay for some U.S. concerts next year -- a task she said would be relatively easy for her. In the past, opening for bands including The Counting Crows and The Rolling Stones, Apple said she felt like an "uninvited guest."

"It sucks because half the people are there, and it sounds strange in the those huge places when it's only half full," she said. "It used to kind of bother me. But now when I think about it, it feels pretty easy because the pressure is off. I can go up for 45 minutes and then just forget about it."

Just got back from Fiona's first show of her tour.

Fucking amazing. Easily one of the best shows I have seen in a very long time. She actually started to cry right after her 4th song because the crowd was pouring out so much affection. Fiona worked her way through all of the expected tracks from "Tidal" and "When the Pawn.." with such passion it gave me goosebumps. Once she warmed up to a large crowd again, she was absolutely terrific. I can't wait to see her with Coldplay.

..she waves goodbye to everyone at the end of her show and walks back on stage about 15 seconds later.

"I don't even know why I left. I mean, you knew I was coming back. I need to come up with something different because.. I don't know.." She smiles and the audience has a good laugh.

Closes with "Parting Gift".

GO SEE HER IF YOU CAN. You won't regret it.

Gotta setlist, plzkthx?  What was the fourth song that made her cry?
I honestly can't remember. It was a really quiet and beautiful track though. Pretty sure it was from "When the Pawn"..

Limp maybe?

Some guy in the crowd yelled "HI!" and Fiona is about to start her song and she says to him, "Did you just say hi?" and starts cracking up.

Probably not Limp -- that one's hardly quiet.  Probably Love Ridden or The Way Things Are.  No setlist?

Anyway, how were the songs from her new album, heard live?  Did they match up to the tone taken on the album, mostly, or was there a mix of the touches from the leaked version?

Not my cup of tea. It annoyed the hell out of me that every time he'd finish a phrase, it would have a few seconds of vibrato. Not a slow pleasant vibrato either. It sounded like he was yodeling. I really like his voice and he's an amazing guitarist, but I couldn't get past that. His lyrics are good though.

Quote from: MacGuffin on November 11, 2005, 09:22:19 PMThough the headliner on her upcoming tour, Apple will be the opening act for chart-topping British band Coldplay for some U.S. concerts next year -- a task she said would be relatively easy for her.

Fiona Apple confused by all her issues

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Conflicts: We've all got 'em -- those religious, parental and societal messages that occasionally cancel each other out. Some folks talk them out with a psychiatrist, others avoid them with a bottle of booze. Fiona Apple dresses them up and sets them to music.

Apple pulled into the Wiltern on Saturday with her issues on display, pushing through a 100-minute set filled with internal and interpersonal conflicts, many of them overlapping. A distinct tension came through in the sometimes analytical, sometimes angry lyrics, but that tension was matched in the music's tone, Apple's delivery and her stage presence.

Touring behind her first album in six years, Apple did not communicate well between songs, in part because enough women in the audience felt a need to shriek during the quiet moments that they blurred most of her comments. But Apple also showed a certain nervousness about talking. She introduced "Shadowboxer" as "a song I mean very much," then apologized after performing it, noting that she'd been referring to a different song. As a result, she implied -- probably unintentionally -- that she hadn't really felt a connection to "Shadowboxer." At another point, an audience member yelled out "We love you," and Apple seemed entirely flummoxed.

Apple's actual singing proved much stronger and coherent. Brooding and introspective performances dovetailed with forceful and angry ones, and she often vacillated between those emotional states within a single number.

Backed by a bass, drums and two electronic keyboard players, Apple spent much of her time seated at a baby grand. But when she stood center stage, her physical movements supported the conflicts within her songs and her vocal performance. Apple clutched frequently at her blue gown, kicked often with her right leg and occasionally broke a tense pose by flinging an arm or two. Whether she was acting or literally reliving the emotions of the songs, she seemed frustrated, distraught and entirely conflicted.

Musically, all of that was supported by chords that toyed with dissonance, shifting rhythms and off-kilter phrasings. It's as if the songs were teetering, just about to lose their balance. Utilizing the eerie fuzz of synthetic keyboards, the arrangements had a loose, hazy quality about them. The drummer's primary role thus became providing sturdiness to intentionally unstable material.

Impressionistic color swatches on the backdrop added to the lack of resolution inherent in the works, and that visual enhancement proved completely appropriate, given that much of the evening felt like a dramatic soundtrack to an Alfred Hitchcock movie, ever-so-slightly lighthearted while it unravels some very perplexing mysteries.

While performing the title track to her new "Extraordinary Machine" CD, Apple noted that she's "good at being uncomfortable." That came through loud and clear in multiple ways during an evening of intriguing conflict.

i saw fiona apple tonite in new york for the first time ever (if you dont count the instore she performed at a few months ago), but it was the first real show anyway.  i think our setlist was identical to the one posted above, which is a few songs away from perfect.  those songs being....

ditch RED RED RED replace with LOVE RIDDEN
ditch SHADOWBOXER replace with NEVER IS A PROMISE
ditch NOT ABOUT LOVE replace with NOT ABOUT LOVE (Brion version)

and pretty much a few of the 'eh' EM songs for ones of WTP, but still... i got to hear I KNOW which made my lifetime.  she was pretty great, and her stage performance was pretty crazy for anyone who has never seen her before she definitely isnt just going through the motions.  you can see her fist clenched on the microphone stand and throwing her body into convulsions during instrumental sections of songs.     it would've been the show i waited all these years for (pretty much 6, since i started really listening to her when When The Pawn came out and i missed her on that tour), had the show been a few years ago.  and her fans almost ruined the experience, drunk stinky assholes and fanatics who wont shut up between/during songs.  "fiona we love you" and like way sillier things being shouted constantly.  but it was still really good, i wish i had seen her on the last albums tour.  the Pawn songs seemed to be best live and for the most part the ones that she seemed to be the most into.  oh well.

I hate when fans do that.  The artist knows they love them.  Last time I saw Ben Folds when he was playing Narcolepsy there was a shot pause and someone yelled "KATE!" even though Narcolepsy was the second song in his encore, so it wasn't too possible he'd take a suggestion then.  Or especially during that live NIN clip posted earlier when he was playing Frail and people keep screaming "I LOVE YOU TRENT!" that would kind of offset that experience (especially when people were singing along with Hurt... didn't seem like a song to sing along with)

so there is a Fiona Apple originals album on iTunes now for 9.99 which i was ready to buy until i noticed that actually its kinda crappy.  it looks like its 26 tracks (13 interview segments and 13 songs presumably recorded live for iTunes) but actually its really only FIVE live songs and EIGHT songs we already have on her albums.  so you can buy them seperately for a dollar each and i guess $4.95 is decent but i'd like to listen to the interview (once) and i dont think its worth paying an extra five bucks for.  so there you have it.  the five iTunes LIVE songs are...

Criminal
Shadowboxer
Fast As You Can
I Know
Extraordinary Machine

Fiona starts about 10 minutes late, no biggie.  I've sat through worse.  However, the levels were horrible, and although her voice was very awesome that night, she was cut short to having a set of roughly 30 minutes.  I can't fully relay to you how ridiculous that is.  Of her slower songs, she only played Shadowboxer and Oh, Well, even though these dumbasses around me kept talking through her set.  I thought it was sad enough that Fiona Apple would open for Coldplay.

So, aggravated from a 30 minute Fiona set, I was then subjugated to a 2+ hour set of Coldplay which would've been exciting, had I liked more than a few of their songs, that they didn't even play.  They played Trouble, Politik, The Scientist and Yellow which I wanted to hear. There was a big lack of Spies, Shiver and Everything's Not Lost.  They mostly played X&Y, which I know am glad I never blind bought or even really downloaded. I've never had this happen, but I think I enjoy Coldplay less after seeing them live.  Chris Martin has this complex where he thinks he's Bono, while the rest of the band seem to stand in place.  There was a very elaborate light show, but I flanked the stage and missed a lot of the effect.  However, if the music relied on the lights, I definitely missed something.

The upside to the Coldplay set was that they played their song for Johnny Cash, "Kingdom Come" and then covered Ring of Fire, which was pretty decent.

I thought to myself the only way to improve the night would be if Chris Martin took a gun to his head and shouted "FREE TRADE" and blew his brains out in front of everyone.  That would've made the entire trip worth it.

I've got two things to say:

1) i agree the itunes original is a scam, but "i know" live is beyond beautiful. it is my favorite from her, and i think this version is even more heartbreaking than the original. they gave it the "red red red 2" sound and it works really well. the extraordinary machine version is good too, for those who don't have the mp3 of the MTV performance, which was the greatest fiona performance EVER.

2) a second solo tour is on the way! go to fiona-apple.com for dates. and she's coming to europe. to paris. and i'm gonna die from happiness.

Thanks for the reminder, Mac.

She played Get Him Back.  Song kicked in, I smiled.  Seemed to be a bit of a mix between old Extraordinary Machine and new.  I really love the leaked version the more I hear it.  It had this combination of desperation, urgency, and vulnerability characterstic of her music.  The new version seemed a bit neutered, so it was interesting to see what she did here.  There was a weird echo with some of her vocals.  An intentional experiment, it seemed.  I was just happy to see her performing at all.  I'll definitely steal it once it appears online and compare it to the others, but until then, I'll stick to the original.

EDIT: Fiona will be on Charlie Rose today (PBS). Bizarre. "Check local listings," the announcement says.

EDIT: I was bored, so I taped the interview and made this video (http://files.onomatopoeia.biz/Fiona%20Apple%20on%20Charlie%20Rose%2020060411.mp4).  Cut off the beginning but nothing substantial was lost.  Quality may be iffy in some spots, but it's better than nothing.  Enjoy!

wow, holy shit.  the only thing better than Costello playing I Know is Fiona doing I Want You.  i HAVE to hear these...

Death Cab, Fiona, Billie Joe Serenade Elvis Costello
Source: Philadelphia Inquirer

The show was smartly conceived, the material well-chosen. Death Cab's Ben Gibbard came off like a dweeb by asking to restart a song because "I dropped my pick." That won't make the final cut. A forceful version of Costello's "Kinder Murder" and strummy duet on his own "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" will, deservedly so.

Death Cab represents the mild influence of Costello's verbally rich rock. Apple covers the dark side. Looking like a pint-sized Morticia Adams in a purple dress, she nearly stole the show from the gracious host she so obviously adores.

Costello made her gloriously good "I Know" his own. The two paired off on his "Shabby Doll" and her "Tymps (The Sick in the Head Song)," assisted by Imposters keyboard whiz Steve Nieve. The evening's highlight was Apple's hellacious interpretation of Costello's "I Want You," a song about obsessive, vindictive love. She knocked it out of the park.

Armstrong brought the crowd to its feet, joining with Costello on "No Action," an acoustic "Alison," and bruising "Pump It Up," as well as on the Green Day hits "Wake Me Up When September Ends," and "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)."

As with all the other guests, Armstrong's affection for Costello seemed genuine, and the admiration mutual. All the younguns came back for an encore of enduring songs none of them wrote: Smokey Robinson's "You Really Got a Hold on Me" and Nick Lowe's "(What So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding?"

Fiona Apple Song Reminds Girl To Be Depressed
June 14, 2006 | Issue 42•24  (http://www.theonion.com/content/index/4224)

LOS ANGELES—Her mood dangerously optimistic at the end of the school year, teenager Christine Lowell was reminded of the need to assume a sullen, self-pitying manner Monday by the Fiona Apple song "Sleep To Dream." "God, I don't see why I should have to continue facing these phonies every day of my miserable life," Lowell said after the song came into rotation on her MP3 player. "I can't be, you know, stifled by your insignificant ways, all right?" At last report, Lowell's mother, the only witness to Christine's sudden and deliberate mood change, had resumed driving to the supermarket without comment. Fiona Apple returns to intimacy
The princess of raw-nerve confessional pop flourishes in a small setting for two fund-raising concerts.
By Richard Cromelin, Los Angeles Times

"I've never done this kind of thing before in my life," Fiona Apple said Monday, introducing a song during her show at the Largo.

That's exactly the kind of thing the audience at the matchbox-size club was hoping for, a moment to memorably differentiate this benefit performance from a business-as-usual Fiona Apple concert.

The intimacy of the room and the mix of originals and standards in the set had already made it distinctive enough, but it turned out that what she had never done before was a call-and-response audience-participation number.

So there she was, the princess of sophisticated, raw-nerve confessional pop, belting out the theme from the kids' TV show "Gumby" and having the audience shout back "Gungi."

"Gungi" is the nickname of her production manager Gordon Paterson, whose battle with cancer prompted Apple to schedule two fundraising shows (the second one, also sold out, is Friday) at the Fairfax district club that's been a regular haunt of hers.

If her Gumby moment was a playful and slightly ridiculous diversion, the 90-minute set overall was weighted toward the sublime. And though its main aim was to help Paterson financially, the evening also made a statement about Apple's artistry.

Her shows in recent years have reached for such a large scale, culminating in last year's tour of arenas opening for Coldplay, that her distinguishing subtleties have tended to be obscured. Monday's performance was a radical reassertion of the nuanced writing and singing that give her music such chilling intimacy.

In the small, nearly silent room, Apple sometimes offered a lyric so softly that her listeners leaned forward like friends hanging on a revelation that would explain everything.

Even in these rarified moments, her voice always held its shape and phrased with percussive precision. Every time she concluded the intricate refrain of "Extraordinary Machine" — "I make the most of it / I'm an extraordinary machine" — it sounded like a string of fine, tiny porcelain beads.

Apple, who was accompanied for all but a couple of songs by longtime collaborator and Largo ringmaster Jon Brion on acoustic guitar, was a strikingly physical performer, reacting to moods and tempos with a body that flailed, stalked, swayed and twitched. Her vocals also ranged far from those understated passages, growling in primal scream mode on "To Your Love" and adopting a torch singer's croon on "Shadowboxer."

These and a few other originals shared the set with some vintage pop standards whose harmonic complexity and lyrical smarts have clearly inspired her own pop-cabaret style. Honoring their nature but bending them to her will, Apple and Brion made Duke Ellington's "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" a ragtimey romp and gave Frank Loesser's "On a Slow Boat to China" a gentle sway. "Crazy" (Willie Nelson's, not Gnarls Barkley's, though that might have been something to try), Irving Berlin's "All Alone" and "Blue Skies" and others helped fill out a panorama of pop history.

Apple might have looked a bit severe in her black, Japanese-style flower-print dress and with her hair tied back tightly, but the atmosphere grew increasingly loose as she and Brion were joined for much of the set by Heartbreakers pianist Benmont Tench and for a stretch by Sean and Sara Watkins of the bluegrass band Nickel Creek.

They all pitched in to the set's big release point, a roof-raising, hot-jazz take on Ella Fitzgerald's "When I Get Low I Get High," with Brion and Tench sharing the one piano. And the Watkins siblings helped Apple tap a strain of rootsy Americana: Singing high harmony on the 19th century murder ballad "Banks of the Ohio" is probably something she doesn't do very often either.

Oh yeah, and listen to "So Sleepy" (http://www.mediafire.com/?tt3tmi2tzml), a collaboration with Jon Brion and the Punch Brothers, from Chickens in Love, for some sort of non-profit.

PTA and Fiona are two of the laziest people I can think of. They hardly ever get any work done. When they were hooking up, I bet things just piled up. No house chores, grocery shopping, etc. I bet their TV always stayed on the same channel.

Laziest two people ever. If they picked their nose and couldn't find a tissue immediately nearby they would probably just put the booger back in their nostril.  :yabbse-cry:

Ever notice how Fiona's albums only have like 10 songs?

I agree. When a professional musician cannot come up with or release at least 10 songs or 40 mins of music in 6 years time something is going on. And her last release was even old and when through that 2 version debacle.

You guys act like a musician is supposed to be strictly a musician prolific in nature.  So what if she hasn't come out with anything new?  Her work was still great till Extraordinary Machine.  In fact, the leak was pretty good, but it was the fucking fans who petitioned and demanded an album, so they did something *new* so people would buy it, since the leak was spread amongst her fans, and it hardly held up to Brion's mix.

Now you expect  her to just manifest new songs?  Just let it flow naturally, there isn't even room to speculate that she's working on something.  She's just living her life, Tidal and When The Pawn, with a handful of extra non-album tracks, are plenty to be satiated on.

If musicians don't make music, or filmmakers make film, we will only have the past to look upon.
I, for one, think Ms. Apple is quite talented and wish her to leave as much art to this world as possible.
Saying this, I know it is ultimately her choice as to what she releases, if anything at all.
Life is short. You could be one of the greatest film directors of all time and die shortly after you edit your (unbeknownst to you) last film.

That being said, Six (6) years for a full-time musician to release only a song here and there for compilations, etc. is pretty scarce.
Six years is a really long time for most directors and making a movie takes a lot more wheels and cogs moving than your typical music album.

But she doesn't owe anyone anything.  She's an artist, she's been able to be successful and release what she's comfortable with, would you prefer her experience gluts or bad albums just because she needed to keep churning out music, regardless of how connected she felt to it or not?

What she has out is pretty good, though Extraordinary Machine is fairly lackluster.  Do you think that, given that album, if she were to go into prolific mode, that she would just get better and better?  Not every artist approaches their talent with the same mindset.  Some say what they need to say with a couple defining albums, especially since the tracks on her albums are quite short.  She must really make what she is satisfied with and turns it over.  It's not as though she's obligated to keep providing us with more and more until she croaks.

It's a kind thought to suggest you want her to leave as much of her art to the world as possible, but not everyone expresses themselves in that way, and considering how personal and sensitive her music is, what would be the benefit of pushing her to make more and more?

I have no idea. Has she ever been asked in interviews why there was such a long space between albums? Surely it would have come up and that is your answer.

I don't know how someone would define prolific by her standards. I don't remember ever reading about her songwriting process. She may be similar to Trish Keenan of Broadcast. In one of her last interviews she said they had tons of unreleased material that the public would never hear. Their last 'real' sole Broadcast album came out in 2005, too, and was said to be close to finished before her death.

There's the answer right there. Good one.

What's puzzling is why wouldn't they want to write songs or movies for that long? I had forgotten about that long gap between Jackie Brown and Kill Bill probably because of him having films coming out pretty quickly afterwards - granted that is a little fudged by Kill Bill's staggered release.

Ryan Adams would be a good case study, too. He released tons of albums, 3 in one year with one being a double, and then he's just become really sparse. I don't know. Some may stop or slow down because they feel like they've reached the point of repeating themselves.

Your username hardly fits you.  Some artists are blessed with free time to actually pursue their art, but even then, they aren't any luckier than artists who tap into inspiration when it strikes them as opposed to continuously honing their craft.  Lots of personal issues arise that you simply don't have time to make art during, in fact, these personal issues usually lead to art being made once one finishes enduring them, but to force yourself to make art during it when you should otherwise be handling it could be irresponsible.

It all depends on how the artist works and how involved they allow themselves to be with the process.  In your case, if you feel you must always place your artform above all else and keep working no matter what, that's fine.  Do that.  Stay productive.  But for some artists, they simply operate in a different way and if Fiona Apple worked in any other way, she wouldn't produce music of the quality she's proven to reach when she feels the inclination.  Patience is a virtue.

New Fiona Apple Music Imminent
"Coming in the next few weeks," says Epic Records chair L.A. Reid
Source: Pitchfork

It's been over six years since Fiona Apple released a new studio album, and in November, it seemed uncertain that her Extraordinary Machine followup would be issued anytime soon. But on Sunday, Epic Records CEO L.A. Reid posted a Tweet confirming that new material from Fiona will be released soon, as Perez Hilton notes.

"Lots of good music coming from @Epic_Records in the next few weeks. Stay tuned music fans. Welcome back Fiona!" Clarifying to a Twitter follower, he said, "YES Fiona Apple!"

Fiona Apple Reveals Album Title
It's 23 words long
Source: Pitchfork

For her new album, Fiona Apple is harkening back to her When the Pawn... days (if you recall, the full title of that album is an eight-line poem). The title of the new record is a mouthful:

The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do.

Epic is aiming to release the record in late June. In the meanwhile, she'll play a series of U.S. live dates, including a stop at Pitchfork's Official SXSW Showcase on March 15.

Love the "I just want to feel everything" part. Don't love the "with my braaaaa-iiiiiii-n" part.

If this is the most commercial song on the album, yikes for the record company! Or maybe they just gave up.

Anything We Want has leaked, a bit after

Werewolf did.

The former?  Epic.  I dig it already.  Has the manic machinations of her previous attempts, all the literal bells and whistles harken back to the beauty of Extraordinary Machine, while paving a path all its own.  Not sure how I feel about Werewolf.  Maybe a bit too literal, but that's okay.

Couldn't agree more. Very good song... though still I don't like the way she enunciates "feisty." The first nine do almost nothing for me. It just sounds like she didn't put much work into the songwriting. Is she really going to sing these songs on a tour? Like, repeatedly? It's confusing.

Fiona Apple and her captors: The saga begins

http://www.salon.com/2012/09/24/fiona_apple_and_her_captors_the_saga_begins/

After being held overnight on $10,000 bail in a Texas county jail cell Thursday, singer Fiona Apple narrated for a Houston audience, a cryptic version of her experience after her arrest:

Now, most of the people were very nice to me. There are four of you out there, and I want you to know that I heard everything you did. I wrote it all down with your names and everything you did and said stupidly thinking that I couldn't hear or see you. I then ripped the paper up, but not before I encoded it and– I got two lock boxes. We'll call them 'holding cell one' and 'holding cell two.' In 'holding cell one' is the encoded version of the shit that you did that I know was inappropriate and probably illegal. In 'holding cell two' is the decoder. I'm the only one who holds the key, and you and I will be intimate forever because I will hold that secret forever. Unless of course the celebrity that you had so much interest in but you wanted to accuse me of bringing up while you laughed at me all night? Unless you're interested in being a celebrity, I'll make you fucking famous any time you ask and I'll open those boxes. So why don't you stay in your fucking holding cell?

It's not clear what Apple is referring to, but the offenses sound serious. Hudspeth County officers don't seem to be upset; rather, Sheriff's Department spokesman Rusty Fleming seems to be egging her on. Fleming released the following statement, addressed to Apple:

First, Honey, I'm already more famous than you, I don't need your help. However, it would appear that you need mine. Two weeks ago nobody in the country cared about what you had to say, — now that you've been arrested it appears your entire career has been jump-started. Don't worry Sweetie, I won't bill you.

Next, have you ever heard of Snoop, Willie or Armand Hammer? Maybe if you would read something besides your own press releases, you would have known BEFORE you got here, that if you come to Texas with dope, the cops will take your DOPE away and put YOU in jail.

Even though you and I only met briefly in the hallway, I don't know you but I'm sure you're an awesome and talented young woman and even though I'm not a fan of yours, I am sure there are thousands of them out there, and I'm sure that they would just as soon you get this all behind you and let you go back to what you do best—so my last piece of advice is simple "just shut-up and sing.

Sincerely
Rusty Fleming

The fact that he responded directly to her weird statement at all demonstrates that he's bad at his job; the persistent use of sexist, diminishing language demonstrates that he's a grade-A cunt.

The fact that he's a grown man who goes by the name "Rusty" demonstrates that he only has two grandparents.

So I saw her in concert the other night.  The opening act was her guitar player, coming onstage casually late at about 8:03.  The schtick was he'd play a few, and then be joined by Fi's drummer, then bassist, then keyboard player.  It worked, in that we were spared an opening act we probably wouldn't care for, her band got the exposure and appreciation they deserved (largely responsible for how awesome Fi is live), and they got to warm up.  They played for about 35 minutes, nothing too memorable (the guitarist's first song was just repeating I can't wait to see you again over and over again ... okay).

Fi too was casually late.  A couple minutes after 9 all the lights in the house darkened and she immediately went into

1) Fast As You Can

Holy SHIT, that was amazing live.  I think it was the shock of hearing the sound come live from someone I had admired so much that wrenched a couple tears out of my ducts, and the effect lingered for the next few songs.  The light show that accompanied this song was perfect, and the trend would follow through most of her other performances.

2) On the Bound
3) Shadowboxer

It was after this song that she first addressed the audience about what happened in Texas.  She wore a ratty white t-shirt with some words written on it in black Sharpie:

READ OR
WRITE
ABOUT
BILL
ADDINGTON

Apparently he's some sort of local hero and she stressed to write and learn about him.

4) Paper Bag
5) Anything We Want
6) Get Gone
7) Periphery
8) Sleep to Dream
9) Extraordinary Machine
10) Werewolf
11) Left Alone
12) I Know

Idiot drunks kinda ruined this one because it was so quiet so there were plenty of silences during which to yell out shit.

13) Used to Love Him - rock out jam at the end by the band.  Very enjoyable little session there.

14) Every Single Night
15) Daredevil

She fucked this song up beautifully.  Imagine if you will a more casual venue, standing room only, though, with bar sections to the immediate back left, far left, far back, and side right.  Each of these setups have flatscreen TVs displaying advertisements on them.  So she's made it fifteen songs into her set but something is gnawing at her.  And she's singing:

"Doooon't let me....
Ruuiiin me....
TUUUURN THOOSE...
FUCKING TVs OFF."

Raucous applause.  She says "whoa, I really fucked that one up," and when she gets to the hook again, she's all, in with the time, singing, "I'm going to have to sing. that. one. a. gain."

She gets to the end and bangs the everloving fuck out of the kettle drums to help with the percussion, then addresses the audience.  "If I find that you wrote about my little antics and not about Bill Addington, I will find you and I will be fucking mad at you and you will be fucking awful at your job."  By this time though, yeah, all the TVs are off.  Heh.

16) Not About Love

Then, finally, and wholly shit, this was the song I was waiting for.  So glad I got to hear this live.  I believe to this point it's her magnum opus, beating out Paper Bag.  I don't know if it was my imagination, but this song sounded much more like the leaked version than the fucked up album one.  She was riding high on adrenaline and piss and spit and venom and all that good shit, and it turned into one of the best performances I'd ever seen.  She hit every beat, and when she to the chorus she really belted it out:

"...and it doesn't make sense I should fall for a king craft of a meritless crown
and it doesn't seem right to take information given at close range for the gag and the bind and the ammunition round."

BIG PAUSE here.  The crowd cheers at the silence.

"THIS IS NOT ABOUT LOVE."

...then 32xspeed-ish, better than the Micro Machine man could ever hope to do.

WhatisthispostureIhavetostareatthat'shwathesaidwhenI'msittingupstraight?
Changethenameofthegamecausehelostandheknewhewaswrongbutheknewittoolate

buti'dliketochooseriiiiight
takeallthethingsthatisaidthathestole
put'eminasacksling'emovermyshoulder
turnonmyheelsstepoutofhissight
trytoliveinalovelierliiiiight...

A SUPER MEGA EPIC PAUSE.  She held, and the band sat with her for what had to be 30 seconds.  Whooping and hollering, this time totally deserved.  "We love you, Fiona."

Then, and then, and then...

Fiona belts out at the top of her lungs, louder than you thought it was possible for someone to yell.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT LOVE.

Holy shit, she just blew the whole place away.

'CAUSE I AM NOT IN LOVE.
IN FACT I CAN'T STOP FALLING OUT...

Phew.

She the addressed the audience one final time.  "I apologize for being rude.  I realize it's hard to turn off 40 TVs.  I'm just a little cranky because I've been up for 2 days, and I have a fucking felony charge."

She rambled a little bit about how she was told not to say anything before she came on stage, and she was like "whatthefuck?  I have a stage and I'm gonna shut up?  I'm singing my song, and they can't arrest me for singing."

17) She closed with some song I don't know.  From doing a search of the lyrics, it looks like Conway Twitty's "It's Only Make Believe".  I have no idea what the fuck that was about.

She again stressed, please don't write about my antics, write about Bill Addington.  So yeah, google him. Or something.  :)

No Encore.  Lame.  But 17 songs and a fight with technology for ($43 + $13)?  I'll take it.

Best moments: Fast As You Can, Sleep to Dream, Extraordinary Machine, Fiona VS. TV, Not About Love
Lowlights: Ubiquitous Mr. Drunk Guy, always there to ruin the experience for everyone else.  Creepy Personal Space Invaders.  No Criminal or Hot Knife -- though I have no clue how she'd do it live -- I guess the band would do, those talented fucks.
The verdict: Despite the pricetag, and the standing room bullshit, it was well worth it.  I've seen Modest Mouse (before everyone and his brother liked them thus ruining their shows' enjoyability), Radiohead (yawn), Wolf Parade (yeah), Sunset Rubdown (whoo ... RIP), the list goes on, and I can't remember being more taken by the QUALITY of the live performance.  Fiona and her band were on fire that night, fueled of course by anger and passion, and it made the excursion well worth it.  If you ever had any sort of admiration for her you'd do well to see her live when you can.  It's an experience.

Fiona Apple cancels tour dates because of dying pet dog

Fiona Apple has cancelled her tour of South America because her pet dog is dying.

The singer-songwriter took to her Facebook page to post a handwritten letter, in which she calls her dog Janet "my best friend and my mother and my daughter, my benefactor... she's the one who taught me what love is."

She addressed the letter to: "a few thousand friends I have not met yet", saying she wants to postpone her forthcoming live dates, adding that she wants to "change our plans and meet a little while later" with regards to the shows.

Apple said of the dog, who has Addison's Disease: "Janet has been the most consistent relationship of my adult life, and that is just a fact... I just can't leave her now, please understand. If I go away again, I'm afraid she'll die and I won't have the honor of singing her to sleep, of escorting her out."

Read the full letter here (http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=486858768014508&set=pb.191278307572557.-2207520000.1353437132&type=3&theater).

Fiona Apple released her fourth album, 'The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do', earlier this year.

It's nice to revisit the album.  It didn't make too many waves here.  Not nearly as many as Extraordinary Machine anyway.  I think it might have been written off too quickly.  We can all agree Hot Knife is an instant classic, but it's too simple an answer.  There's depth in her other works on this album, too, as that article illuminates.

The new album is named Fetch the Bolt Cutters.

Great profile here: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/03/23/fiona-apples-art-of-radical-sensitivity

The album is out April 17th. I cried. Other artists are postponing their releases, but Fiona Apple fought her label to release Fetch the Bolt Cutters as soon as possible because we all need the record right now—we do, we do, we do.

She's one of the greatests. Her rawest record. The second song could have been sang by Nick Cave. Vicious. Playful...

This album is unreal. How does she do it. Pitchfork gave it a perfect 10 - I'd recommend reading the review cause it's beautifully written https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/fiona-apple-fetch-the-bolt-cutters/.

what the hell is going on? 4.17 average rating on rym too.

I mean, I like her too but I never expected her to release a album that would become this critical acclaimed. I'll listen to it later as well

This album is so fantastic, and I'm sure any criticism it receives is just a regurgitation of what's already been said about her work/her, and I'm really not trying to hear it from anyone about "fetch the boltcutters."  This is every bit as good as Extraordinary Machine.

jesus, this album is filled with a lot of " oh wow this is good"-moments, isn't it? i mean i'm just three songs in, but in that time i went from getting shivers and tearing up to the opening lines to smiling like a fool through the third song

had a great time listening to this album at 3am while smoking about 3 bowls to calm the ol' nerves. good times. seriously, this is instantly likable. her last one had to grow on me, this one i love every track upon first listen. i've been listening to her last three albums nonstop ever since that nyer article dropped recently.

My only issue with the album is that the Idler Wheel, one of the best albums of all time, is better. (And I'm not sure that Drumset needed to be included at the end of the record, not just before On I Go, another repetitive song.)

I'm delighted by the hype train. Feels good.

it's brutal how she references one of the most cheerful songs of all time and then seconds later drop that rape line. I also can't believe how she manages to build momentum and carry the energy from the first moment to last... it just gets better and better with each song

That line absolutely floored me.

I can appreciate that Fiona's sound is quite unique, especially on this album. The sound of the album kind of exists in its own context and as a jumping off point from Fiona's previous albums (except for some loose associations, influences, or what have you). The home-recorded percussion really contributes to the atmosphere. I just feel like Fiona's songwriting, or lack thereof, has never really grabbed me too much. The sing-song style of her vocal melodies is just kind of ... ehh. The "using anything in my house for percussion" is a nice idea but sounds unpolished and annoying after a few minutes. The vocals are also mixed so bright and are so omnipresent that I can't stand them for long. Not that the vocal mic she used is particularly bad, but it could've been darker and smoother.

That said, this is still better than at least half the crap out there these days and has merit in its inventiveness and uniqueness alone. Part of the strength of the release (which was probably anticipated by Fiona's team to some extent) is all the chaotic press -- being released during this "downtime" and getting a perfect score from Pitchfork, the backlash from some, and how that press will inevitably fuel the endurance and legacy of the album. At any rate, I didn't know Pitchfork gave it a 10 before I listened and just thought, Hey, a new Fiona Apple album; I'll give it a listen. I was lukewarm after a song and a half, got bored, started getting a bit irritated, and shut it off. Came back and didn't find my opinion changed much.

I think she's one of the greatest lyricists working today. Brilliant wordplay.

I should've specified that I was referring almost wholly to the music only. I always listen to the music first. Storytelling and lyrics come second for me (strictly what the artist is saying ). I bet lots of people would disagree with such a black-and-white way of looking at things. But in my mind, if a lyricist's music isn't good but their lyrics are, they should be doing something else, like script writing, poetry, fiction, etc. I get that lyrics can be intertwined with rhythm, melody, emotional impact of a song and/or album, so on, so I get that there are severe limitations to what I'm trying to say. So I do try to revisit music with this in mind too. I went back to Kendrick Lamar's stuff and found there's a deeper layer that bolsters the music to something great.

So yeah, I totally concede that the lyrics could be great on Fiona's album and are probably tied to the music itself, and that I should go back and listen, which I most likely will. I'm also just a harsh reviewer of things and probably have some sort of deep-seated schadenfreude complex going on in that I typically default to negative reviews unless something pulls me in and makes me think otherwise. Maybe it's tied to making myself feel better.  :yabbse-grin:

I believe that Fiona is a great songwriter of music! Obviously, Fetch is more free-form than her past work and I wanted to answer to your message with a sort of review from the album—but I'm not at that point yet! The thing is, I understand that it would sonically not interest people the same way late Coltrane period is just messy noise.

The way her voice/singing/enunciation/lyrics/words/sounds clash and complement with the instrumentation plays a big part in what makes her music great.

Not About Love has an ingenious structure but feels like a "classic" tune, it's natural.
