I hadn't owned a Black Keys or National album before those two (even though I've heard of them over the years) and I must say I was pleasantly surprised by both. I thought MGMT also grew exponentially from their debut.

The Spoon album seemed to drop from view almost instantaneously unlike Ga, but I saw the other day they are recording an ACL show soon.

This new Black Keys album was a definite disappointment to me.  I don't know if they're growing stale to me or if it's too overpolished or what, but it just seemed pretty weak.

In fact, this year has kind of sucked insofar in terms of new music.  For me anyway, you guys seem to have your lists thoroughly planned and that makes me jealous.

EDIT:

Ok, maybe a top 3 could work for now.  Then I'll see Pitchfork and have a deeper opinion on Surfer Blood, Sleigh Bells and Beach House.

Yay, I heard it:
1) Wolf Parade - Expo 86
2) Spoon - Transference
3) New Pornographers - Together

I heard it but so what?
1) Vampire Weekend - Contra

This list is sparse, yeah, but nothing else matters.  Expo 86 is so good it makes up for everything else.

I'm terrible about keeping up with new music, but lately I've been listening to a lot of Ellie Goulding, a lot of Mumford & Sons, and a lot of Josiah Leming. So I guess that's my list. I also loved Broken Bells, but I hardly listen to it at all for whatever reason.

hey modage why do you hate putting a title under album covers that clearly have no text written on them at all?

to everyone else: thank you to everyone who does title their pics, it's really great that you don't assume ppl just magically know what a bunch of faint lines on a beige background refers to. it's great that you don't think that if people are not cool enough to instantly recognise the random picture you posted that they're probably don't deserve to be told. it's great that you are trying to SHARE your information instead of just preaching to the choir. it's great that you have some consideration for some members who might actually be interested in hearing about music they may have missed because they generally don't have the time to scour the internet for the hot shit, and use xixax to get a heads up for music like they do with the other parts of the site. it's just great that you're not assholes.

Also: I just asssumed people would remember from when it was posted in Now Playing (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=1631.msg283798#msg283798).  I'll title them soon. See above.

Post however you want. It's not that difficult to find out what they are if you're not a complete lazyass or just looking to complain about something.

I think my favorite album of the year is probably Yeasayer's Odd Blood. It has the worst cover ever so I'm not going to post it. EVER. I pretty much like every single song on that album. I also like James Murphy's new album. I Can Change might be my favorite song of the year. I think the new Black Keys is the best thing they've done since Rubber Factory. I wasn't digging their new overproduced sound they've had the last few albums but they finally nail it here. I love Unknown Brother. It's a great song. Have one one me by Joanna Newsom is really great too! Oh, that Suckers album is really good! Ariel Pink gets a thumbs up but doubt it will make my eventual list unless this year is really weak.

I was really let down by more albums than I have liked this year (so far). Surprisingly, I've found a lot of the releases I was looking most forward to very boring. Spoon, Beach House, The National, Liars (HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?). Just wasn't feeling them even though their previous albums were some of my favorites.

Actually, I missed the Walkmen release this year, I do love them.  I'll check it out and fix my list accordingly.

But seriously, check out Electric Wizard.  Stoner metal is a negative connotation.  It's really more heavy, psychedelic blues.

I agree wit ha handful of album people have already mentioned (The Hold Steady, Titus Andronicus)... here are some I haven't seen listed here yet:

No Age - Everything In Between

What an accomplished progression from Nouns, their previous album. It betrays none of their experimentalism or love of noise, while adding a joyously catchy pop sensibility. It's a short album, no filler and you never feel cheated. Dreamy and loud.

Of Montreal - False Priest

I like Of Montreal best when their in Prince freakout mode. Aggressively sexy walls of sound that don't stay in one place for too long. Add the production flourishes of Jon Brion and you have an album that never fails to make me want to shake my ass. Kevin Barnes alternates between sincerity and being full of shit, keeping me on my toes from start to finish.

Earlier this year, I saw Barnes sing a really emotive version of John Lennon's "Mother" with Bron accompanying him on piano. It was beautiful and vulnerable. Later in the year, I saw Barnes with full band, garish and sexual, covering a medley of Michael Jackson songs, complete with his own hype man engaging the crowd between songs. Barnes seemed equally comfortable with each persona, fragility and bravado, and it's exciting to see what personality he'll inhabit next.

Jonathan Richman - O Moon, Queen of the Night on Earth

Another beautiful album from a constantly underrated pinnacle of the American music pantheon. Jonathan Richman has quietly made a career delivering emotive, dependable albums of joy and pain, sometimes with nothing more than an acoustic guitar and some drums. He's an amazing lyricist, stripping everything of pretension or abstraction - this album is no exception.

Boston Spaceships - Our Cubehouse Still Rocks

Like vintage Guided By Voices. An album instantly familiar and excitingly fresh. The perfect compliment to the recent GBV reunion tour and another example of Robert Pollard's ability to toss off rock songs catchier and more vital than dudes half his age. COmplimentary listening to Superchunk's Majesty Shredding. Another album that's nostalgic to a sound more prevelant two decades ago without sounding a bit repetitious.

Drive-By Truckers - The Big Do-To

Consummate storytellers. Like Flannery O'Connor with guitars. They craft a word that is richly cinematic and astutely realistic with every song. And they rock, too.

And, while I can't share the enthuiasm many of you have for LCD Soundsystem's This is Happening, I have no reservation in saying it has the best opening and closing tracks of any album I've heard all year. "Dance Yrself Clean" and "Home" are both pretty and ambitious in all the right ways. I'm surprised I can love two songs so much while dismissing everything that comes between them.

You guys are sleeping on Yeasayers Odd Blood. It came out in January, but it's so good. It's dancy, but artsy and precise. The songwriting can be silly, but it sounds so good, who cares?

LCD soundsystem - This is happening
Black Keys- Brother (F U walrus the production is dynamite and it's the dirtiest rock that anyone is putting out - Hi-fi is the new lo-fi).
Vampire weekend - Contra (Diplomat's son and I think ur a contra are two of the best tracks of the year, i'm not bored, just wish it was a longer album).
National - High Violet
The Tallest man on earth -  The Wild Hunt  & Sometimes the Blues Is Just a Passing Bird (EP) ( This guy is a fucking phenom, i would kill to be able to write songs as good as him).
She and him - Vol 2
Kid Cudi - 9     Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager
Kanye West  - my dark twisted beautiful fantasy.  No one is making beats like this guy, his shit is raw and gritty as all get out.

Honorable mention :

Robert Plants new album
Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
B.o.B - B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray
Eminem Recovery - now i think the beats on this album is bullshit and most of the hooks are lame as fuck.  Look out he inverted his hair color and now he's motivational.  His flow is undoubtedly one of the best out, this album is kinda bullshit to me. I can respect a guy growing up, but he should have included more dre beats.

This new Black Keys album was a definite disappointment to me.  I don't know if they're growing stale to me or if it's too overpolished or what, but it just seemed pretty weak.

I don't see where you're coming from about it being overpolished, but I could accept that you think they're growing stale. This is the first album of theirs that I found diggable and expanded on their sound. I'm assuming you've heard most of their stuff though so I can respect your opinion.

and Kid Cudi's just repeating everything about himself from the first album except it's not as deep or entertaining. He's gonna need to hit bottom so he can make a comeback before he'll be culturally relevant again

The caps lock is what made your last post super funny walrus.   I am ROTFL.  Maybe it was the ignorance though, i must have missed the song called "brothers" on the album.  I heard the song "unknown brothers," maybe that's what you were talking about :)

To me, 'brothers' is the black keys.  Sure the production of this album is better than the others, and i know that really gets to lo-fi lovers like you wally but this album does expand them as a band.  The song writing is just as good if not better and the additions of other intstruments really makes it complete.  When i saw them back in June, it was way better than the previous shows i had gone to.  So it seems like their talent is getting better and so is their songwriting skills.  Brothers shows this.  The first 8 songs are fucking dynamite off the charts, then the album mellows you out.  one of the best of the year IMO.

As far as Cudi goes, he's the only one doing that kind of hip hop, so i enjoy the lack of dynamic in some of the sections.  It's very well produced but not typical in its song writing,  That's why i dig it.

I think Brothers is the best Black Keys album since Rubber Factory. I was a big fan of theirs early on and part of what I loved about them was their gritty production. When they started getting more polished, I didn't think it worked very well, but this is the first time where I think they put it all together and created something great.

I wasn't saying I didn't ever say that about the album, my observation was aimed more at why he remembered to offhandedly mention it.  Even after relistens, I still don't like it.  I'm not opposed to hi-fi stuff, but their new stuff just feels really glossy to me.  But I'm willing to accept that I'm just getting tired of their formula.

Anyway, let's not overlook john's list here, where he mentions a couple of my favorites that missed my list because I put mine together fairly hastily (it was more top loaded with stuff that I've either gotten around to listening to now or immediately sprang to mind because they blew me away.)

Still though, I gotta hand it to...

Barnes seemed equally comfortable with each persona, fragility and bravado, and it's exciting to see what personality he'll inhabit next.

...

Drive-By Truckers - The Big Do-To

Consummate storytellers. Like Flannery O'Connor with guitars. They craft a word that is richly cinematic and astutely realistic with every song. And they rock, too.

Haven't heard much of the others, but I'll check them out!

Of Montreal's album is probably the one I turned around on the most this past year. I haven't really liked anything of theirs since Sunlandic Twins and on first listen I hated False Priest but the more I listen to it the more it grows on me. The one two punch of Sex Karma>Girl Named Hello is a lot of fun.

my top ten for the year:

Twin Shadow - Forget
this got great reviews and was produced by one of the guys from Grizzly Bear but I didn't give it a chance until recently. Great songwriting all around and embraces that late'70s-early 80's nitch that I love but is rarely done well.

Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
Never listened to them before because I thought they were just another overrated hipster band, but this album has the goods. Sprawl II is the song every teenager wishes they could write.

Royksopp - Senior
Pretty much hated everything they've done since Melody AM, but this is a very patient, mature album. Norway kicks ass.

The Russian Futurists - The Weight's On The Wheels
This album got bashed around here but I think it features some of the most well written lyrics in years. Golden Years is the song every 35 year old wishes they could write

Four Tet - There is Love in You
This album does the impossible, making trip hop sound relevant and original again.

Caribou - Swim
I was turned off by this album at first because I loved the poppy psychedelic sound of Andorra so much and I felt like he was trying to sound too electronic and trendy on this one. After seeing him live over the summer I revisited the album and it hit me in a much different way. Kaili features one of those gorgeous melodic phrases that you never want to end.

Yeasayer - Odd Blood
Much more consistent than All Hour Cymbals and it features my favorite song of the year, I Remember

Sufjan Stevens - Age of Adz
All Delighted People came out and I hated it. This album came out and it blew my mind. Then, I listened to All Delighted People again and loved it to death. I don't know if that was his intention, but releasing All Delighted People and having it so coolly received helped soften the expectations of the "Big Illinois Followup" and allowed me to listen to the two pieces for what they were.

Big Boi - Sir Lucious Left Foot
Because I enjoy the hippity hop too and this one was just so much more fun and effortless than the Kanye album.

!!! - Strange Weather, Isn't It?
I was really surprised to see this band bounce back so confidently after Jerry Fuchs' death. In my opinion, Fuchs WAS the band and his loss was a devastating one to dance music. Sporting tattoos on each arm saying "midi in" and "midi out", the man was an incomparable drummer, and there's a pretty good chance you've rocked out to his beats without even knowing it. I was going to put the LCD Soundsystem album here but fuck that shit, you already know that album's good. Give this one another shot.

edit: can't believe I forgot about Deerhunter and Everything Everything. I've listened to those two albums so much they feel older than they are. I especially love that this exists: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XopZEKLoBFc

If someone had told me a year ago that my favorite album of 2010 would be Beach House, I wouldn't have believed them. Until this year they were a band I could only listen to for a few songs at a time before getting bored and switching to something else. That all changed on the band's third album, Teen Dream, which leaked around this time last year and went into heavy rotation soon after. During the last 12 months it held it's own against albums by many of my favorite bands, some of which didn't even get a spot on this list.  So with much competition, here are my favorite albums of 2010.

You guys are sleeping on Yeasayers Odd Blood. It came out in January, but it's so good.
i can't get into the voice. i can only describe it as whiny emo 80's english all combined.

of montreal has also tested me. i can only come up with that it's when he's trying to sing in high falsetto a la prince and the fact that he does it so much on this album. coquette has the vocals he's known for and it was instantly good to me. then there is a big piano ballad towards the end that seems to end right before it could get epic.

really surprised how much mia's stock fell. her last two records were huge in a critical sense and pineapple really blew her up. she performed pregnant on the grammys, status high as ever, hinted no more music. maya comes out and virtually disappears soon after. i like it more than kala and it has some catchy potential radio singles. maybe she blew it with the non-tv friendly born free video?

Amen. I love that album to death, and it's held up throughout the year. I haven't seen that on nearly enough 2010 lists (in fact, barely any).

On that note... We need more lists here! I'm having trouble finishing mine. Just need to discover a couple more great albums. For some reason I've had a hard time getting into most of the general favorites this year. I'm getting easily bored.

Arone of Buke and Gass describing their sound:

It's the exuberant heartbeat of a newly retired schoolhouse janitor (no offense) riding the back of a strong and determined racehorse as it gracefully hurdles through scenes, such as a serene rose-petaled puddle, or a group of surprised topless sun-beat-beach-goers, or a pitchfork and flame-bearing mob blood-hungry for the rabbit who stole all their carrots and cabbage the day before some big holiday. Musically.

I agree.
