Title: Conan's the man!
Post by: ono on October 16, 2003, 11:38:17 PM
So, like, we all know Conan O'Brien is the freakin' man, and now, he's procreated, and he's gonna talk about it tonight on his show, which is just starting on the east coast.  So yeah, this thread is basically about how much he rules.  (And, you know, you can watch it if you want.)

Carry on.

His kid should have a talk show with Andy Richter's kid and Letterman's kid in 20 something years

This is the best show Conan could have done for Neve..
1. If They Mated (w/ Uma & Quentin)
2. Lullaby (w/Sox/Yanks fight)
3. Conan's drinking his face off
4. Making fun of Neve's new toys
5. 'Going to third base with a fish'

1. If They Mated (w/ Uma & Quentin)

The funniest was the one with Osama and Saddam, and if they mated, they would have the Cubs fan that catched the ball.

That guy has to move to another state or country, if he doesn't his life there will be miserable.

Imagine having Natasha Henstridge on the show and kissing a fish.

The best shot in the lullaby was the one with Arnold Schwarzenegger and George W. Bush suddenly appearing next to him.  The timing was perfect.

I started watching at the beginning of Tim Robbins' interview.  I didn't even expect any new shows this week, so I was watching a movie.  When the movie ended, I was surprised to see a new episode.

He'll probably take next week off.

Letterman mentioned Neve one or two nights ago, probably because his own baby is on the way.

Slam me.......but Conan has been on a down swing in the last few years. I can't even bear to watch his ridiculous dancing entry with a sad spin move, his "we've got a really great show this time, I'm not just saying that" routine, and all the other stuff he does to take up time.

I really liked him during his earlier years but seems to have lost his touch, IMO. Even next day reruns on Comedy Central doesn't make it worth it. I think he is struggling and Craig "Stuck On Himself" Kilborn is what I now prefer to watch.

Freaker--
Funny you should write that, I just had a conversation w/ my roommate about this too.  I too, have lost interest in the show.  Maybe it's the lack of Andy and some of the supporting players (I sorely miss Triumph, he's never on anymore), or just that I'm tired of the same thing ever night.  And I find it kind of sad that he always has to pick on the band members (like telling Labamba to "stay away from my daughter") all the time for cheap laughs.
Kilborn's a prick, sure.  But he knows it.  And damn if I don't love 'What up?'

I disagree with this, and I'm reminded of the exchange of dialogue in Groundhog Day about blood sausages.
Title: Andy was a great loss
Post by: blackmamba on October 19, 2003, 12:09:12 PM
Ok, Ok
I'll admit that Conan has gone down hill. (Andy was awesome)
But what else is there on TV? No, really. Conan is still better than most of the shit out there, and his interviews are still fun.

The Strokes will be on Conan O'Brien every Tuesday in November, starting tonight.  Like, right now.  In about ... 40 minutes.

And, tonight was the first show with new opening credits, and a really funny cold opening with Max trying to host the show.  Just saying.

I was going to post about this too. I loved the layout tonight. Max being ordered to sit back down and then cutting to this awesome new intro format was GREAT. I ate it all up. Not to mention Conan was just nuts tonight with Regina Hall... I'm looking forward to the Ferrell episode on thursday. Hopefully they have the Ferrell Edition of the Year 2000.

Conan O'Brien show to Toronto
From Reuters

Conan O'Brien will bring his NBC show to Toronto in February, a move organizers there hope will boost a tourism industry ravaged earlier this year by the SARS outbreak.

The comedian confirmed Monday that his "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" will shoot Feb. 10-13 in Toronto. The idea was partly initiated by Lorne Michaels, the Canadian-born producer of "Saturday Night Live."

The comedian said it would be "premature and foolish" to say who would appear on the show, but he thought "Ben Affleck, J.Lo guaranteed," along with J.D. Salinger and Saddam Hussein.

That voice that Jim Gaffigan does after a bunch of his jokes makes me hate him so much.

That high pitched sort of old man voice that he adds after a joke is over, "What's a ______?" and adds nothing to the joke.  If he got rid of that, I might enjoy his routine and not pray for his death.

Conan O'Brien can be seen every weeknight on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, repeats of which now air at a respectable hour on Comedy Central.

The Onion: Who could you take in a fight?

Conan O'Brien: Let's see, who could I take in a fight? Definitely Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Have you seen her? Her upper body is very frail. I think I could take her if she was sleepy and I had a two-by-four. She'd go down quickly.

You mean you don't notice them when he constantly comments on them?  Why do you think he does that?  It gets repetitive but it sort of gives it an almost backstage feel to the show.  Hosts aren't supposed to do things like that, it really made me re-evaluate pretty much every other show with an audience and realized how lame and fake audiences usually are.

Canada Condemns 'Racist' Conan O'Brien TV Show

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's government on Friday condemned a show by U.S. late-night television host Conan O'Brien that insulted people in French-speaking Quebec and seemed to suggest everyone in the province was homosexual.

Ottawa and the province of Ontario paid $760,000 to help O'Brien -- who appears on the NBC television network -- bring his show to Toronto for a week to boost the city's profile after a deadly SARS outbreak last year.

But the federal government said O'Brien had gone far too far with the show broadcast on Thursday in which he went to Quebec, a province which has had separatist governments for much of the last 20 years and is a delicate political topic in Canada.

"We want to disassociate ourselves from the comments which were broadcast last night because we do not support them in any way," junior government minister Mauril Belanger told Parliament.

At one point in the show, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog -- a hand puppet that is a regular on the show -- said to a Quebecer: "You're French, you're obnoxious and you no speekay English." It told another: "I can smell your crotch from here."

O'Brien's team were also shown replacing street signs in the province with those that read "Quebecqueer Street" and "Rue des Pussies."

Alexa McDonough, a legislator for the left-leaning New Democrats, described the program as "racist filth" and "utterly vile" and demanded the government seek the return of the C$1 million subsidy.

"There may be those who would say, 'Isn't this interfering with freedom of expression?' It's not interfering to say we will not publicly fund this kind of vile, vicious hatemongering," McDonough told reporters.

Belanger did not commit to asking for the money back. No one at NBC was immediately available for comment.

The complaints over the puppet's comments come on the heels of a similar uproar following criticism of European French-Canadian hockey players on CBC television by the country's best-known sports commentator, Don Cherry.

The "Late Night" show, which taped in Toronto all this week and featured guests such as Jim Carrey and Mike Myers, was broadcast in Canada by CHUM television, which said it regretted any offense that may have been caused.

"We offer our apology and assurance that it is never our intention to air programing that offends any of our viewers," the station said in a statement.

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog has landed in trouble before, most famously when it had an altercation with rap singer Eminem at a music awards show in 2002.

I feel that anyone offended should walk it off while Conan never uses Triumph again (on account of not being funny).  It was a lame bit, get over it.  There was a reason why they kept in the clips where the old man laughed.

And the Canadians in the audience suck too, they were cheering the whole time (even on the obviously ironic statement Triumph made that went something like, "You live in North America, speak the language.")

This whole Quebec thing has been hugely blown up too much. Anyone with a brain knows what the Triumph character is like... was the Quebec City segment a shock to ANYONE? Seriously. Now they clearly went to Quebec City and not Montreal because they knew people predominantly spoke French there. They knew the crowd would love it and they did. That's why they did it. If they knew the Ontario people would boo that kind of stuff, they wouldn't have done it. So yeah, like SHAFTR said, people just grow up a bit. It's just comedy, folks. Loosen up.

I don't think you got it ... people in Ontario didn't boo the show. They booed Quebec. It's not a question of growing up.

You see, MY governement paid almost a million dollars to get Conan to boost Toronto's image... but in the doing, not only did it ridicule Quebec, which would have been funny (I laugh a lot about the Quebec and Canada South Park joke) but it stirred shit with the people from our fucking country booing us heavily in a show seen everywhere in America. Quebec City is one billion time nicer and fun than Toronto but my government keep spending stupidly to promote that god damned town.

Seriously, the joke WAS racist, because it didn't mock french people for things they (we) do, they just fucked with them (us) cause we don't speak english. And the thing "Speak the language of the continent" or something is totally out of place... I wouldn't got in Isreal and scream "Practice the religion of the continent !" without fearing a good hit with a stick. I'm actually kinda mad no one reacted more violently in Quebec :-(

I still think Conan is very funny and I'll watch his show without thinking about that, but it was still lame. It's weird cause now people here see him as some kind of Howard Stern.

Edit : I'll probably get 'why the hell do Quebec people want to separate so bad' so I'll just post a log from a AIM conversation that summarize it almost decently.

JudBooth: two reasons : First, moraly, the values of french quebecers and canadians are incredibly different. 80% of english canadians are bigots while 80% of quebecers are really open minded.
Second and mostly : We get fucked and then fucked some more. We (as a province and not an individual) hand in X amount of money to the Canadian government in tax money and we get back only 4 fifth of that money...so basically we get ripped off of one fifth of our tax money
JudBooth: I mean, one fifth of our tax money we get nothing for
JudBooth: and we pay 52% tax so that's a lot
JudBooth: (plus 15% sales tax)
-------: why does Quebec have to do that and not the rest of Canada
JudBooth: because the money isn't given back to provinces respecting a pro-rata of population as in the US ... here, the important is that provinces get money to fund the services they give. But since we have more money than most provinces, we end up paying for people who hate us and live 1000 miles from us
------------: ah

No, I mean if Conan's writing team figured they would boo the Triumph segment, they wouldn't have done it. My point is that they loved it and that's why Conan and his team chose to go and shoot it. It was entertaining the majority and to the ones that couldn't take the joke even though Quebec is punchline to most Canadian jokes, it was sourly received. It's too bad because it's not Conan's fault and I think some people are putting too much blame on him. He's a comedian. And it made people laugh. Generally, a comedian watches out for the vast majority and not the minority who could be offended. That's the way comedy is and always will be.

there's a backlash ever since the whole "PC" movement failed and got ridiculously out of hand, that anyone getting offended by anything is seen as overtly sensitive and childish and whatever.  I think there's a real myth in a country like America that there are groups of people out there who just imagined the whole marginalized shit up, just guarding by their TVs and waiting to be offended by some comedy bits.  If you're from America and an American comic has made a joke on behalf of another, and you laughed, yay, more power to you.  But when the other people got offended and protest, don't you find it a little tasteless to tell them to "grow up" or call them other names?  I mean the whole PC-movement was started by previledged American ("white") liberals anyways.  And because the rest of the world saw through that bullshit and recognized it was just a pretend effort to respect people who are different, doesn't mean their now-adult kids can go around telling other groups of folks to grow for failing to laugh at the same things they do.  you don't find it a bit condescending to tell the canadians to grow up because they don't think it's funny that you laughed at them with triumph?
I mean even rob smigel himself is pretty apologetic when his bits didn't work the way he planned (for example, his lil' speech before the pilot episode of "saturday tv funhouse" was shown on the "Other Network" dvd).
Back to the original point, yeah Triumph was going for the majority ("the market"), the American audience, but if his target protests, you should at least respect it, instead of saying shit like "lighten up buddy it was only a joke, and I laughed!"
Title: Conan's the man!

My "grow up" comment isn't really directed at canadians, although in this context I guess it is.  I think PC is detrimental the the cause of equality.  "They are equal, but you can't mention this _______."

When you tell me I have to respect their views, I do.  But, I don't respect their stance.  Throw any generalizable joke at me, you won't see me complaining.  The only people in this entire argument who has the right to be angry are those who Triumph directly insulted, obviously they were fine with it since they signed away their rights for the clip.

O Canada: O'Brien is sorry

Conan O'Brien is so sorry for offending Quebec. Well, sort of. The talk show host apologized to Canadian citizens on his Tuesday night show for skewering the province in a skit last week -- but not without a sense of humor. Responding to criticism from Canadian politicians outraged by a Toronto-based segment featuring O'Brien sidekick puppet Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, O'Brien brought out a translator after his monologue who gave a highly creative interpretation to the host's subsequent mea culpa. "People of Quebec, I'm sorry," said O'Brien, whose comment was followed by a French translation and English subtitles that read, "People of Quebec, I'm an albino jackass." While O'Brien went on to apologize for his insensitivity and praise Quebec, the shaky translation took further liberties, including the disclosure that O'Brien "wet the bed like a little girl" and has "never known the touch of a woman." On Friday, Canadian officials blasted a "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" segment in which Triumph made light of the French-Canadian separatist movement and taunted attendees of Quebec City's Winter Carnival (HR 2/17). The NBC show's weeklong trip to Toronto was subsidized by the Canadian government in an effort to boost tourism.

I apologize on behalf of all Canadians with a sense of humor. We thought Conan was funny.

Oh, and to those who think it's stupid to say "grow up", yeah, people shouldn't say that. What they should say is "get a fucking life!!", or "chill out -- guess what, you're not the only person somebody ever made fun of".

"Alexa McDonough, a legislator for the left-leaning New Democrats, described the program as "racist filth" and "utterly vile" and demanded the government seek the return of the C$1 million subsidy.

"There may be those who would say, 'Isn't this interfering with freedom of expression?' It's not interfering to say we will not publicly fund this kind of vile, vicious hatemongering," McDonough told reporters.
"

hehehe, ahhh, that's our lefties. Gotta hate 'em -- oh, I mean, uh... love 'em. Yeah. Fight that evil, Alexa. You're so courageous. Really.

I guess if anyone actually watches the Triumph bits, they deserve what they get. What a waste to publicize so much nothing, though. There are certainly more pressing problems than this.

I forsook Conan a long time ago, don't think he's funny these days much at all, though I'll always cherish what he did with The Simpsons. Compared to Jon Stewart- my king of late night- he's only ever so slightly less sophomoric and irrelevant than the Leno/Letterman diad of dullness. I only watch anything but The Daily Show if there's a guest I like, and even then I just TiVo it and skip everything but what I want to see.

Tonight on Conan, James Lipton did "In the Year 2000" with Conesey.  Great stuff:

CONAN: Gays will oppose gay marriage when James Lipton marries Ice T to become "James Lipton Ice T."  Cut to shot of Lipton smirking.

LIPTON: A mischievous writer will write "Pete paints pretty pink ping pong balls with his penis" just to see if James Lipton will say it.  James Lipton will refuse.  (He grins.)

CONAN: "Batman will admit he is gay.  Clay Aiken will admit he is Batman."

And, you know, Amy Poehler is on, so that's kinda cool.

The Homeland Hating thing could've went on for a full hour and I would've loved every second of it. And I can never get enough of the audience's reactions of offensive jokes.

I'm guessing they said Fallon took over a couple weeks ago so they could do the impression of Conan.. I wouldn't know. Pierre Brounard's ... RECLINER OF RAY-YA-YA-YAAGE!  Gwyneth Paltrow.  Could this show BE any better?  And the whole Chuck Norris cameo last week was great, too.  Those two weeks when he was away during the Olympics were two LONG weeks.

Also, Conan's making a bunch of Brit jokes with Gwyneth, and she's cracking up.  Then Paul Bettany comes out and says how it's not such a good move:

Bettany: ...You say "tomato," we say "tomahto."  You say "erb," but we say "herb," because there's a fucking "h" at the beginning.  *crowd goes wild*

The biased TV networks bit was okay.  The best ones were the Weather Channel and the Bert and Ernie civil union song.

O'Brien to replace Leno on 'The Tonight Show'

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Jay Leno will hand over the reins of NBC's "The Tonight Show" to "Late Night" host Conan O'Brien -- but not until 2009, the network announced Monday.

"In 2009, I'll be 59 years old and will have had this dream job for 17 years," Leno said in NBC's written statement. "I felt that the timing was right to plan for my successor and there is no one more qualified than Conan."

"Plus, I promised Mavis (his wife) I would take her out for dinner before I turned 60," Leno said.

O'Brien, 41, has signed a contract to stay in his current job at 12:30 a.m. ET for the next five years and then take over the top-rated late-night show when Leno retires.

"Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien continue to be the most successful combination in all of late night," said NBC senior vice president Rick Ludwin. "We have locked in the future ... for years to come."

It's not clear just how long O'Brien is "locked in." NBC would not say how long his new contract lasts, nor how much he and Leno are to be paid.

The early announcement avoids a replay of the early 1990s, when the retirement of veteran host Johnny Carson touched off a behind-the-scenes battle between Leno and then- "Late Night" host David Letterman over who would be Carson's successor.

That feud ended with Letterman going to CBS to compete head-to-head with Leno. Letterman took an early lead in the ratings, but Leno has been consistently ahead for the last nine years.

O'Brien, in the statement, called "The Tonight Show" "one of the great franchises in television" and said he is "thrilled to get this opportunity."

"I am thankful to everyone at NBC -- which has been my home for the last 11 years -- and I am particularly grateful to Jay for all the generous support and kindness he has always shown me," he said.

The announcement leaves an upcoming vacancy in the 12:30 a.m. time slot, a position that catapulted both Letterman and O'Brien onto TV's lucrative A-list.

Leno, a stand-up comic, was Carson's guest host before taking over full-time. O'Brien was a writer for "Saturday Night Live" and "The Simpsons" before landing the "Late Night" job in 1993.

I wasn't even thinking about Carson.  Don't know if that's sarcasm, don't really care.  I always envisioned him staying put.  Why would they move him forward?  He's no comedian.  His jokes are horrible -- even worse than most people think Leno's are.  It would be interesting -- if that's even the word for it -- to see what he does with a 12:30 show.  But he's not the type of person you think about when considering hosts for a new show like that.  Finding the balance between (thinking about the newer shows) Jimmy Kimmel and Craig Kilborn (both not that great) will be hard.  And most likely, it'll be someone totally unknown.  It worked with Conan, so why not again?

So yeah, that was from the rerun that aired late tonight/this morning/whatever.  Nothing really spectacular from this week, though I liked the freaky camera angle employed during tonight's monologue.  I'm sure the bat segment was hilarious, but I didn't get to see much of it.  Was out of the room.  Will Arnette was brutal.  His stuff about Bateman was great, especially Justine playing his love interest on Arrested Development.  Said it before, but Conan needs to do Monday shows.  Four a week isn't enough.  He can make it up with more vacation in the summer, I don't care.  It just doesn't make sense.  Considering though that I only have a four-day week right now, I can understand the appeal, but a job you love has to be different.

that was hilarious, i'm gonna steal this idea..
Quote from: the manAs reality television becomes ubiquitous, being unknown becomes cool. Oprah proclaims that "Anonymity Is the New Fame," and the hottest new program is a worldwide search for someone who has never been on television. The winner, an 80-year-old Maori tribesman, is soon on every magazine cover and is spotted canoodling in the bar of the Four Seasons with Tara Reid.

Thanks for posting that.  I've always wanted to see the first show.  Even then it was hilarious.  I had no idea that Actual Items started this early.  And Conan singing Edelweiss at the end must be the precursor to the lullaby he does every once in a while.

I just got a very unpleasant email from NBC Universal. They have demanded that I take down all video clips from the show. I'm forced to acquiesce since I'm not exactly equipped to deal with the legal department at NBC Universal. This site is (was) for people who don't get Conan on TV. If they had the opportunity to watch him on TV they would. How else are visitors going to enjoy the show now? Oh well.

So I guess this is the end of conzone.co.uk. Just want to say thanks to everyone who sent emails thanking me for enabling them to watch Conan every week. I hope you will be able to find other ways of seeing the program.

It's a Boy for Conan O'Brien

NEW YORK - Conan O'Brien and his wife Liza Powel O'Brien have had their second child.

NBC announced Thursday that the "Late Night" host welcomed son Beckett into the world Wednesday evening at a weight of 8 pounds and 4 ounces.

"Mother, baby and father are all well," the statement said.

O'Brien, 42, and Powel have been married since 2002. Their first child, daughter Neve, was born in 2003.

the recent show with alan cumming and sarah chalke was the best of the year so far. a great start to the year.

from the beginning "you the man!!!! :yabbse-angry:" gag to the new characters (evil puppy, federline food pyramid, drunk guy spooning dr joyce brothers!) it was just flat out hilarious.

alan cumming is one of the best guests, conan really hits it off with gay guys , and cumming is one of the coolest gay guys ever. sarah chalke was nice too, way funnier than the show she was promoting, which went downhill after heather graham guest starred (or is she still in it?). i might watch it again now, cos damn she looked fine.. really, really fine. and Living Things.. Living who?

That German word she said was hilarious.  Of course, Conan had to break out his faux German.

Max's US Army commercial and the trailer for the movie (or was it a TV show) with Conan and Robert Reich were classic Conan hilarity (I need to get a thesaurus).

Conan O'Brien Meets With Finnish Leader
2 hours, 35 minutes ago

HELSINKI, Finland - Conan O'Brien, who endorsed the re-election of Tarja Halonen with mock ad campaigns, met the Finnish president Tuesday at the presidential palace in downtown Helsinki.

The "Late Night" host handed the Nordic country's first female president a Valentine's Day present, wrapped in red paper, as they posed for photographers before the closed-door meeting that was expected to last 15 minutes.

O'Brien, who resembles the fair-skinned, red-haired Halonen, had quipped that he wanted a six-hour audience.

Last year, O'Brien caused a political stir when he endorsed the 62-year-old Halonen for a second six-year term — which she won last month — because "she looks like him," using mock ad campaigns that backed her and attacked opponents.

On Saturday, O'Brien joked that he expected to be rewarded for endorsing Halonen with a Cabinet position as inspector of saunas, "mostly women's saunas."

Some 2,000 fans had waited hours in subfreezing temperatures to catch a glimpse of the quirky, self-deprecating talk-show host who is unusually popular in this small, taciturn nation on the northern fringe of Europe.

During the tour, O'Brien visited Arctic Lapland, some 500 miles north of the capital, with his film crew, and appeared on several Finnish TV shows.

Later Tuesday, he was to receive a TV award for being "the most surprising and entertaining TV personality in Finland."

O'Brien to devote show to Finland trip

NEW YORK -- Conan O'Brien may be a talk-show host in America, but he's a god in Finland. On Friday, O'Brien will devote the whole of "Late Night" to recapping his recent trip to the Nordic country where he is surprisingly so popular. Thousands met him at the airport; he was mobbed wherever he went. "The whole experience was surreal. It was a fevered dream," O'Brien told the Associated Press in a phone interview. In Finland, his NBC show airs in primetime, though delayed three days. Seizing on his peculiar Nordic niche, O'Brien joked with his usual self-deprecating style: "(David) Hasselhoff is big in Germany, but I'm the king of Finland." O'Brien's Finnish popularity escalated in the past year as he increasingly made humorous references to his remarkable resemblance to Finland's equally carrot-topped president, Tarja Halonen. When she won re-election, her rival candidates wondered if O'Brien influenced the race.

As a facial hair afficionado I can attest to how difficult it is to not only grow a good beard, but maintain it as well. I can guarantee that the reason these two have grown beards is because everyone wants one, but not everyone has the time and means to go into hiding for a couple months to grow it out till it's at a respectable appearance and length. Beards grow strange. The right side may grow 10 times faster and longer than the right or it may have a weird discoloration or smell and having to be on TV 5 days a night there is no chance you can grow that beard out without having to look like a fucking freak for the first couple months.  You'll get blacklisted and lose your gig!

BUT, if you can go into hiding (as these two did) for awhile and grow it out in private until each side reaches the length and color you like and until it is time to unveil you are on the straight and narrow. Not everyone has the time nor means to get it done.

On the other side, If you're batshit crazy you can go about your business even when your beard is at it's worst. See Mel Gibson and Orson Welles.

It's a good beard for Conan. My problem is that I have blonde hair but grow beards as red as his. I use to be self conscious about it but now I'm just proud to be irish.

I'm also lazy so I usually have a beard because shaving everyday sucks.

My beard is almost the same in color (a little more orange than red) as Conan's, but not as full... it's kind of between those two guys.

You know what a beard takes?  Bravery and dedication.  If you're the type that can grow a beard in two days because you have amazingly rich facial hair, I envy you and you owe it to yourself to have a beard for at least a couple months, but if you're like me and have spots on your face that don't push hair our like the rest, just stick with it, eventually, it will all grow out and kind of even out.  It just takes putting up with knowing your look like a meth addict (or in my case, some kind of meth-addicted viking hipster) for a few weeks... once that's done with though, just burn the pictures and enjoy your beard.

From AICN.

ON JANUARY 10, RIVAL LATE-NIGHT HOSTS JAY LENO AND JIMMY KIMMEL ARE SCHEDULED TO HIT EACH OTHER'S COUCHES ON THE SAME NIGHT.

One Good Turn Deserves Another as Popular Late Night Hosts Reciprocate Guest Bookings on Each Other's Shows in Rare Dual Appearances

BURBANK -- January 7, 2008 -- Has television's vaunted "Late Night War" softened? On Thursday, January 10, NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" (Monday-Friday, 11:35 p.m. - 12:37 a.m. ET) will welcome rival late-night host Jimmy Kimmel to the famed couch in Burbank. In return -- on the same night -- Leno will make a trip across town to take a seat on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" (Monday - Friday, 12:05 a.m. - 1:05 a.m. ET on ABC) during its taping in Hollywood.

"There are only three or five people in the world that know how tough this job is," said Leno of the swap. "Jimmy is one of them. It will be fun to discuss who's a good guest, who's a difficult guest and everything else that comes with sitting behind these desks."

Kimmel said, "If Jay and I can come together and guest on each other's shows, then surely there is hope for peace in the Middle East."

"The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" is from Big Dog Productions in association with Universal Media Studios.

"Jimmy Kimmel Live" is shot live in front of a studio audience and produced by Jackhole Industries in association with ABC Studios.

Fallon to Replace Conan as Late Night Host
Source: Fox News

NBC wasn't expected to announce it until next month, but word has leaked to Fox News that Jimmy Fallon is set to take Conan O'Brien's job as host of "Late Night" in 2009 when O'Brien takes over "The Tonight Show" from Jay Leno, who is leaving as host in May, 2009.

Fox News' Roger Friedman writes:

There's much debate about letting Leno leave NBC etc., but right now let's just concentrate on Jimmy. He's the perfect successor to Conan and should have just as big an audience when he takes the reins. Fallon is one of those great underrated performers. This should be the right milieu for him.

Fallon, who recently married producer Nancy Juvonen, is said to be thrilled and ready, if not a little scared, about taking Conan's desk. He still has to pick a producer and a band, among other things.

O'Brien takes 'Tonight' next summer
Host steps in for Leno on June 1, 2009

The latenight regime change at the Peacock is set for June 1, 2009.

Conan O'Brien will take over "The Tonight Show" on that Monday night, following the end of Jay Leno's 16-year run on the show on Friday, May 29.

After that, it's still anyone's guess whether Leno will decide to stay at the Peacock. NBC execs told reporters Monday — as well as Leno, disguised as a TV critic, that they're not ready to lose him to ABC.

"We can't force him to do something," said NBC Entertainment/Universal Media Studios co-chair Marc Graboff, who added later, "Our goal is to work with him and come up with an alternative than telling jokes in late night at 11:30. We believe there's room on a regular basis for him to be on our air."

Graboff admitted that the Peacock knew that Leno wasn't happy with having to depart "Tonight," which continues to dominate late-night ratings.

And Leno as of late has provided plenty of hints on air and in interviews that he's less than pleased with having to go. He recently joked on-air about a move to ABC, and told USA Today that "I am definitely done this year – with NBC."

NBC also elaborated on its transitional plans for "Late Night." As mentioned by exec producer Lorne Michaels on Sunday, new host Jimmy Fallon will begin testing the show online toward the end of this year. Current host O'Brien will exit at the start of 2009 in order to prep for "Tonight"; reruns will air until Fallon goes live sometime in the spring.

"We made our decision and we're happy with it," Graboff said. "We're confident the 'Tonight Show' will continue to be dominant in its time period."

Despite the rampant talk that he's ready to bolt the Peacock, Leno himself – made up in a bald cap and fake goatee to look like a middle-aged reporter – played good sport and showed up to the TV Critics Assn. press tour, asking the first question during Graboff's and fellow co-chairman Ben Silverman's Q and A with reporters.

It took some crix a while to catch on that the "reporter" asking about Leno's contract was actually Leno himself. Leno asked the NBC honchos about what would happen if the host had a change of heart.

"Everyone's entitled to change their mind," Silverman said. "But that puts management in an impossible situation."

Still in disguise, Leno also asked if it were true that he was offered the fifth hour of "Today" –a joke – and if he'd be paid through the end of 2009 – which is true.

That also means that Leno, should he depart the Peacock, wouldn't be available to join ABC or any other outlet until the start of 2010.

Graboff said Leno showed up in an attempt to remind everyone that he played a role in the transition plan (first announced four years ago) and that he's "not bitter."

"He wants to make it as smooth a transition as possible," Graboff said. "He doesn't want Conan to go through what he went through in 1992... We'll respect Jay to the end, he's a class act. We'll do whatever we can and whatever he wants."

In other Peacock news, NBC confirmed that Amy Poehler's new series will not be a spinoff of "The Office" (Daily Variety, June 12). Exec producers Greg Daniels and Michael Schur will continue to develop an "Office" spinoff, but put it on the backburner to focus on the Poehler piece.

Details of the Poehler laffer still haven't been revealed; but with star Poehler set to give birth in the coming months, show won't be ready to air post-Super Bowl, as originally scheduled. NBC's still deciding new "Super Bowl" lead-out plans, but "The Office" is a contender.

Also at the session, NBC announced that it would once again hold its advertiser upfront presentation – which it dubbed the "infront" – in April. Peacock is still mulling its plans for the traditional May upfront week.

Earlier in the day, NBC Universal Sports and Olympics chairman Dick Ebersol spoke from Beijing via satellite, and admitted that access to spots like Tiananmen Square isn't as open as he'd like – but that nonetheless, the Chinese government has come a long way.

"China's new to the world in terms of any level of openness," Ebersol said. "I clearly see change, it's a whole kind of learning experience for them. As shown by the recent earthquake they're capable of openness."

The fact that NBC will be able to broadcast for six to seven hours from Tiananmen Square is a "starting point," he said. "Would we like more? Of course we would... I'm not naïve but it's a starting point, which I don't believe would be happening if the Olympics weren't here."

Ebersol recounted broadcasting live last year in Tiananmen Square to cover the year-out Olympics ceremony and encountering a senior Chinese TV official. The official pointed at the Peacock's own satellite and said, "This is the beginning of change for us."

With the big possibility of major non-Olympic news coming out of the Games, Ebersol pointed out that NBC News is sending its heavy hitters to Beijing, including Brian Williams, the "Today" team and Tom Brokaw.

"If something develops here, if this becomes a news story other than Olympic events, were certainly ready to cover them," he said. "We won't cavalierly blow out sporting events to show news. But at the opening ceremony we have our own cameras there, and the news and sports people will be ready to comment on that."

During the NBC News/MSNBC session, division president Steve Capus dismissed criticism that the cabler hasn't drawn a line between its opinionated on-air hosts like Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews and its campaign coverage, which is anchored by the two.

"This is not a new strategy," Capus said. "Keith and Chris anchored before. The audience gets it. That's the single biggest factor. The audience understands the roles these guys have played. They play it right down the middle on election night."

Olbermann then chimed in, calling "Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace – who blasted the channel during an earlier press tour session – for being "a little underinformed on this."

Olbermann said Fox News Channel hosts including Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity and Alan Colmes were also seen quite a bit on that network during primary coverage.

"What his statement is based on is something his network was doing, with less of an acknowledgement that those roles need to be separated," he said. "We did this in 2006 and I don't remember reading one thing that something we were doing was wrong."

Meanwhile, NBC made yet another change to its fall sked, opting to double pump returning skein "Life" the week of Sept. 29 and Oct. 6.

"Life" will air at 10 p.m. on those Monday nights, in addition to the show's regular Friday slots on Oct. 3 and Oct. 10.

That bumps "My Own Worst Enemy," which had been slated to air starting Sept. 29, to Monday, Oct. 13. Later date for "Enemy" is also timed to the launch of a new GM product; the auto manufacturer is a integration partner on the show.

Net also confirmed plans to move "Kath & Kim" to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays; show will still launch Oct. 9. That means the special Thursday night editions of "Saturday Night Live" will air on Oct. 9, 16 and 23 at 9:30, followed by the preem of "30 Rock" in the post-"The Office" slot on Sept. 30.

Conan O'Brien will officially be out of work come Feb. 20.

NBC just announced that date as the last O'Brien-hosted Late Night. New overlord Jimmy Fallon will take over the desk beginning March 2.

O'Brien, who has been the Late Night ringleader for 15 years, won't be needing unemployment, though. In NBC's version of musical chairs, he's due to assume Tonight Show duties on June 1, three days after Jay Leno signs off .

Leno will ultimately resurface in the Peacock's prime-time lineup next fall, fronting The Jay Leno Show weeknights at 10 p.m.

Fallon, meanwhile, continues to hone his shtick online at NBC.com.

Max Weinberg and the Max Weinberg 7 are going to LA!
Source: TV Squad

Oh, thank the late night gods! After some rumors surfaced that Max Weinberg wouldn't be relocating with ConeBone69 to LA for The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, I was worried. I mean just look at that bored, uninterested face! Because of their bizarre energy and involvement in sketches, the Max Weinberg 7 are the best band in late night (I swear I will fight anyone that suggests anything less).

Late Night would have a totally different tone without elements like Pender's over-energetic, passionate solos and LaBamba's extra-endearing presence. Well, not to worry, people who worry about the same pointless things I do! It looks like Max and the gang are joining Conan in LA.

NBC's official Late Night blog has confirmed the move. Hopefully, the lack of any indication otherwise means that the band will remain completely intact.

yeah, thats why i really wasn't upset about Late Night with Conan ending. come june, the Tonight Show will basically be an 11:30 Late Night show with better guests. granted, he IS retiring the masturbating bear.. so expect a LITTLE bit more maturity with his new gig, despite him saying he won't grow up at 11:30.

I think his retirement of the masturbating bear just means he can't be as lewd. On Inside the Actors Studio he says his ambition is to get even sillier with the Tonight Show.

I hope his retirement of the Masturbating Bear is only a sign of him not wanting to repeat the same characters on the new show.

Just for the record, KE is one of the greatest jazz players around, the guy is amazing, of course the gig in TTS is just for the money (a masters gotta eat) and unfortunately they play way too commercial which is where Max band really excels, always choosing great music; oh, and drummer Marvin Smith is a god.

!!!HOLY SHIT ALERT!!!

Andy Richter to join Conan on 'Tonight Show'
Source: MSNBC

Conan O'Brien will have a familiar face when he begins his new "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien" run on NBC: Andy Richter.

Richter will fill the role once held by Ed McMahon, serving as the announcer for the "Tonight Show" when Conan O'Brien takes over the reigns from Jay Leno on June 1.

Richter previously served as a sidekick to O'Brien on "Late Night" between 1993 and 2000. According to a release sent out by NBC, Richter's new role will not be as a sidekick, but he will be involved in live and prerecorded comedy bits.

"Andy is one of the funniest people I know, and we've maintained a close friendship since he left 'Late Night,'" O'Brien said in the press release. "We have a proven chemistry that will be an incredible asset to 'The Tonight Show.'"

Despite the prevailing opinion on here that Conan is awesome, I have to disagree. I'm sorry, but I do not find him funny. I've tried to watch him numerous times, but every time he pulls that Larry King shit - oooh suspenders, oooh upside-down glasses. That just ain't funny to me. I don't care about all the forcing-Jay-out scandal, I really don't. Couldn't care less about Fallon, I won't be watching.

I guess what I want to say is that there is only one late night host I find completely enthralling and constantly entertaining, and that's Craig Ferguson. So where's the love Xixax, where's the love? Maybe now Conan's an hour earlier you'll all find the remote and check him out. Sure, he's not all-out wacky, but he's dry, and he's fun. A very enjoyable hour. Guaranteed.

yup, Im with you one this one. Watching Ferguson made me realize how much i hate the regular talk show format. Conan O'Brien's (earlier) time has come
As a new day for 'The Tonight Show' dawns, the comic host says he's ready to get, or take, his kicks.
By Scott Collins; Los Angeles Times

Conan O'Brien knows he's supposed to be angry. Everyone assumed he'd be steamed that his promotion to "The Tonight Show" host chair has been upstaged by you-know-who. But O'Brien doesn't really do steamed, at least not publicly. This is a guy, after all, who made his name with nonsensical comedy bits involving naughty bears, celebrity photo gags and silly predictions.

Conan the talk-show host makes fun of himself. He doesn't engage in juicy showbiz spats.

"It just doesn't mesh with my personality," O'Brien said at his new office in Universal City, where the new "Tonight Show" premieres Monday. "I'm not an antagonistic personality who wants to battle it out with someone and trade barbs with them over the air."

Yes, but what about all the pressure? He's taking over a fabled 55-year-old NBC institution from the No. 1-rated Jay Leno, just as the entire broadcast industry is under threat from swooning ad revenues and audiences. And then the network stole O'Brien's PR thunder last year by announcing a prime-time show for Leno -- five nights a week!

Don't even start. O'Brien has launched against extreme odds before, back in 1993, when he was a surprise choice to succeed David Letterman as host of the New York-based "Late Night." His previous show-business experience consisted of writing stints on shows like "The Simpsons" and "Saturday Night Live." NBC had so little faith in him as a long-term asset that it gave him renewals for nothing longer than 13 weeks at a time.

Earlier this year, he finally wrapped a successful nearly 16-year run on the program, which has since been taken over by Jimmy Fallon.

"I do have people come up to me and say, 'Oh, it's a lot of pressure. What about the ratings?' " he said of his new gig. "And I say, 'You know what? You're talking to the wrong guy.' I'm like Clint Eastwood in 'Hang 'Em High.' They hanged me at the beginning of the movie, I somehow lived, and now I'm back again!"

The great unknown is how the 46-year-old, Boston-born O'Brien will change "The Tonight Show." O'Brien realizes that change is inevitable. "Tonight" will not be the same show he was doing in New York. It can't be. But not even O'Brien knows exactly how the program will be different.

"My 'Tonight Show' is probably going to be different six months in," he said, "because I'll have responded to, 'Oh, man, it really works when we do that thing in the parking lot.' 'Oh, my God, let's never, ever, ever go out to Lankershim again.' 'Hey, that thing we did at the burrito stand was fantastic.' 'Good God, what were we thinking when we crashed through Gov. Schwarzenegger's skylight without telling him first?' "

He will be the program's fifth host, after Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson and Leno. While still cultivating a college-age fan base -- and maintaining the air of the Harvard Lampoon cutup he once was -- O'Brien will nevertheless be the oldest person to become host of "Tonight."

Like Leno, O'Brien is a native East Coaster who is taking over what has become the quintessential West Coast talk show. Unlike Leno, though, he is a doing so at a time of tremendous turmoil in broadcasting, with late-night viewers fleeing to cable alternatives such as Adult Swim and "The Colbert Report" and analysts questioning the viability of the network-affiliate model that allowed Carson and Leno to reign supreme in after-hours viewing.

For most of the last 15 years, Leno has handily beat Letterman in head-to-head competition. For the current season, "Tonight" averaged 5.2 million total viewers, compared with 3.8 million for "Late Show," according to Nielsen Media Research. (Analysts, advertisers, journalists and the competition will be watching closely to see any sign of O'Brien losing ground.)

It's an enormous challenge, to which O'Brien responds, as is his custom, with a joke. "My real goal is to ruin 'The Tonight Show' so no one else can ever do it again," he said with a smile. "I want to be the fifth and last 'Tonight Show' host. I want to irradiate it. The government's going to come in and say, 'No one can come here for 35 years.' "

Staking out new ground

Leno's "Tonight" was taped at NBC's old headquarters on Alameda Avenue in Burbank. The new set is three miles southwest, on the Universal lot. Viewers will see the familiar talk-show fixtures: a paneled desk, orange sofas and a Los Angeles skyline marked by the Capitol Records building. The designers alluded to O'Brien's Manhattan past by planting an illuminated Empire State Building in the backdrop behind the band, which as on "Late Night" will be led by drummer Max Weinberg.

Upstairs, O'Brien's office contains various toys and gag gifts, including an action figure of Abraham Lincoln, one of O'Brien's lifelong heroes. Throughout the day, the host will doodle on his brown desk blotters with impressively rendered cartoons; an assistant will then file the used blotters. ("If I ever do go on a rampage, they're gonna want to study these," he said.) Behind his desk, three guitars rest upright on stands, including a Gretsch White Penguin electric that the White Stripes gave him as a gift.

A corkboard holds pinned index cards with some of the bits proposed for O'Brien's first week on "Tonight." One has the host showing viewers the improbably flattering mug shot on his new California driver's license. Another imagines O'Brien accosting passersby on the studio lot and elsewhere in a vehicle tricked out to look like his talk-show desk.

During the old "Late Night," O'Brien and Andy Richter, his cherubic sidekick in the program's early years, did a similar routine, except entirely in the studio, with a desk and a green-screen special effect. Under O'Brien, the 12:35 a.m. program became famous for off-the-wall humor that resonated with college audiences. The comedy was at once silly yet sophisticated, well informed but seldom topical. It may be a hard mix to pull off on "Tonight," which during the Carson and Leno tenures depended heavily on political jokes and headline humor.

Regular "Late Night" characters included the Masturbating Bear, an animal devoted to self-pleasure that was for some reason clad in a diaper. In another bit, O'Brien and Richter (later, O'Brien and guests) would don futuristic attire and make predictions about events that would take place in 2000, bravely continuing the franchise after that year had passed.

A "Clutch Cargo"-inspired segment had the host conversing with scandal-plagued celebrities. Sometimes the director would cut to the announcing booth, where pony-tailed announcer Joel Godard would relate a tragic anecdote with a wide and unsettlingly frozen smile plastered across his face. And there were frequent visits from Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, a cigar-chomping, wisecracking puppet created and operated by writer Robert Smigel, whose memorable 1997 debut found the character trying to copulate with purebreds at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.

O'Brien sees no reason that such comedy can't be done on "Tonight," even though the audience at 11:35 p.m. is much larger and, it is often supposed, less venturesome than the one that turns up an hour later. "If something works, you keep it. And if something doesn't fit anymore, you don't. I think it's that simple," he said.

"I personally think the whole 12:30-11:30 split is [overblown]; people exaggerate the difference. I think television's changed a great deal. I'm constantly turning on my TV at 4 o'clock in the afternoon and seeing women in shaving cream bikinis gyrating on some MTV show.

"I've had people say to me, 'Well, it's too bad you can't do Triumph on 'The Tonight Show,' " he continued. "And I'm like, 'Yes, you can. Triumph has been a guest on Jay Leno's 'Tonight Show' twice.' Of course you can do it. The show just needs to be funny."

Already O'Brien has decided to pay homage to his past by asking Richter, who left "Late Night" nearly a decade ago, to rejoin him. O'Brien said he envisions Richter in a role similar to Ed McMahon's on the Carson show. Except, it seems, with quite a bit more comedy thrown in. Richter, an understated performer who developed a cult following of his own, has already filmed a segment that finds him attending announcers school.

Indeed, much of "Late Night's" staff, including executive producer Jeff Ross, has moved to California for the new show (the total staff for "Tonight" numbers 120). O'Brien will commute from Brentwood, where last year he bought a $10.5-million, six-bedroom mansion for himself, wife Liza (a former ad agency employee whom he met while filming a "Late Night" remote piece) and their two young children. While his salary was reportedly $8 million per year on "Late Night," it has likely escalated significantly in the earlier time slot (Leno earned a reported $30 million annually in the gig). It's quite a change from his early days in Los Angeles, when he banged out a living in small apartments while writing for TV shows.

Coattails extended

O'Brien has been Leno's heir apparent for so long that his ascension risked seeming anticlimactic. But then, late last year, NBC decided to shake things up.

The network's decision to give Leno the 10 p.m. weeknight slot was a surprise, O'Brien conceded. O'Brien said he gets along well with Leno and was pleased the network found a way to keep him. But the notion that he would still be following his predecessor -- five nights a week -- took getting used to.

Ultimately, he said, "It doesn't have anything to do with me. I can decide this is good for me or bad for me, but it's not my choice. It's not my decision. I also realized nobody knows what this means. It's an unprecedented move. To sit around and try and obsess about it and figure out the angles now feels like a waste of time."

Brad Adgate, senior vice president at New York ad firm Horizon Media (whose clients include NBC), noted that any shift in the personality-driven world of talk TV can be risky. And the Leno maneuver may end up making O'Brien's job tougher if NBC viewers decide they don't need more than one nightly talk show. "There's a chance there's some sort of [viewer] fatigue there," Adgate said.

But he added that NBC took a far bigger risk by installing Fallon as O'Brien's replacement. Or, for that matter, by giving O'Brien his talk-show break. The point is that late-night audiences are still growing -- a rarity in network TV. "It's really become an extension of prime time in many ways," Adgate said of the slot.

As for O'Brien, what he has to do now, he said, is just make "The Tonight Show" as good as he can -- which means tuning out the extraneous noise. "There's a lot of potential pitfalls moving ahead," he said. "There's certain things I can't pretend. I can't pretend I'm 32 and in a converted radio studio. There's certain phases that you go through in your life. So I don't want to try and pretend I'm something I'm not.

"I really want this show to grow. The 'Late Night' show, people can think of it as a static thing. But it really wasn't. It went through these stages. And I went through stages. So what I'd like to do with 'The Tonight Show' is, 'Let's continue that, let's keep it going.' "

A well-timed pause. "And then, four years from now, start phoning it in," he said.

Andy Richter: 'I got itchy'
By Choire Sicha; Los Angeles Times

After a nine-year absence, Andy Richter returns to work with talk show host Conan O'Brien, when O'Brien takes over "The Tonight Show" on Monday night. In the interval, Richter did at least two shows on Fox and one on NBC and a bunch of other stuff.

Where are you?

I'm in my office in . . . I almost said Rockefeller Center! At Universal. I think a lot of people are surprised to find out I'm not on the Conan show anymore. People say to me, as late as a year ago, "Oh, I love your show, I just don't stay up late."

So why did you turn your back on Conan and friends for so long?

After seven years of being on the show, I got itchy. I have a philosophy that if you enjoy good fortune, rather than sit there and say, "Oh, that's fine, this amount is good enough for me," you should try and push it. You should see how much you can stretch your good fortune. And I was curious. Now I'm so happy to be back and making TV every night, not asking permission from somebody and waiting six months to get their sparklingly clear and cogent notes. And then wait another month for them to get back from Hawaii and say yes, now we can go make television. I felt like a plumber who kept going into the building and saying, can we put some pipes together? And watching my wrenches gather dust.

It's not really worked out, making TV?

I don't know if I'd do any better. I'd hate to be a development person and place bets on which comedy horse is going to win the race. But some comedy horses, you break their legs. That's where it gets kind of weird. Or I've been in the situation where you're riding the horse they bet on, and at some point in the race they start shooting at the horse. But wait, you bet on me! Why are you trying to kill me?

So a life on the couch at night -- that sounds relaxing.

Oh, absolutely. I mean, first of all, it's steady! I'm not gonna lie to you. A steady paycheck is a very rare thing in show business generally. And specifically right now a very rare thing. That in itself is the sublime revelation. To get that stress lifted, man, life is really nice.

Some day the kids might want to go to college.

I hear other people adding up how much it's going to cost, and I choose to not do that. I choose to just pay each bill as it comes. Adding up how much you're gonna spend on your kid's education, it puts ice water in your bowels.

Your friend Conan -- has he changed over the years?

Um, yeah, but you know what, not in any way that I wasn't around to witness. We've kept up over the years. I've seen him turn from a ridiculous young ninny into a ridiculous old ninny. Now he's very dignified. Touches of gray even! That's mine and his color secret. And I'm giving it to you. I'm kidding! . . . Though he's in remarkably good shape. As everyone else slides southward. Or at least their bodies slide southward.

He's looking trim!

He's part of the manic-talk-show-host eating-disorder club.

But you sound emotionally healthy.

Yeah, I think I am. I mean, I have a shrink. I keep up with him. Have for many years. Try and use the therapy the way it's supposed to be used -- rather use it to cure my neuroses, not just buoy them up.

You mean Larry David syndrome?

Well, I wouldn't put a name to it!

Was your wife supportive of your old-new job change?

Absolutely. I mean, once she knew I was going to be happy doing it. We've been married 15 years! I think she understood how much fun it would be and how much it represented to me, without even having to ask me. It's not a difficult thing to go to your wife and say, "Honey, I've just been presented with a way to get a regular paycheck."

I missed the premiere and I kinda am mad I did, but my favorite moment of Conan's old show was this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lL0WayC7jW0

Yea, I know it's more about Norm Macdonald, but classic and I've never seen Conan geniunely laugh that much during the show.

I love Conan but fuck i cant stand his monologue, or how fake and uninteresting his interviews are. He just sits there, sets up his guests usually lame stories in the most obvious ways, and makes fun of himself. ugh.

Guys, Ferguson may be "dry" but i believe that is just what happens to a guy who isn't funny naturally trying to read jokes someone else wrote, that also in turn are not funny. I put ferguson on the same level as carson daly or a tree falling in the forest.

If no one watched it, did it really happen? FUCK HULU!!!!!!!

Post by: Kal on June 02, 2009, 01:29:46 PM
I was super excited about the show. It was good, but it had some awkward moments. Andy Richter needs to find his place there cause he seemed like just standing there and laughing like a moron. As funny as he can be, it sucks that now Conan will not have so much interaction with Max and the band apparently. He did not even mention or talk with the other band members at all.

It was a solid debut I guess, but at times it felt like the one-hour Office episodes where they all seem a bit out of place. Will Ferrel was an OK guest, but not great. Pearl Jam was pretty cool.

Apparently some industrious internet people came up with the theory that Conan's set design is derived from Super Mario Brothers.  It's pretty subtle, though.

Not really, they addressed it already.  The background they're using for the gif was created and built just to match the background.  It's not like actual straight frames directly from the games.  They basically colored in the outline with mario stuff.

It's funny though.

Although that would make an awesome Mario level.

I wish there were more Marios like Yoshi's Island.  What the world needs now -- more than ever -- is more expolrable side scrollers.  I'm talking to you Super Metroid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and to a lesser extent Viewtiful Joe.

Conan O'Brien's ratings slip, but race with David Letterman is just starting

On June 1, the premiere of "The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien" began with a filmed piece that found the tall, skinny host, dressed in suit and tie, jogging across America to get to his new studio in Universal City.

But O'Brien might need to pick up the pace. After a strong start in the ratings, "Tonight" is already slipping behind CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman," the rival program that O'Brien's predecessor Jay Leno defeated handily for years.

On Tuesday night, Letterman edged past O'Brien in the overnight household ratings (3.4 rating/8 share vs. 2.9 rating/7 share) for the first time since O'Brien took over his show, according to data from Nielsen Media Research. More troubling for NBC, "Tonight" has also lost significant chunks of audience with each airing since the premiere, when it scored a hefty 7.1 rating/17 share. "Tonight's" numbers since late last week have been well below Leno's overnight average during the first three months of this year (4.1 rating/10 share). Letterman's numbers, meanwhile, are landing within his usual range (3.0 rating/7 share for the first quarter).

Those figures don't tell the whole story, though. O'Brien's premiere was heavily promoted, so a steep drop-off in viewers afterward was to be expected. Also, the NBA Finals on ABC have disrupted some local programming around the country. And maybe most important, while Leno's audience skewed old for a late-night program, NBC points out that O'Brien is strongest among young adults. It won't be clear how well the host is hanging on to those viewers until the complete ratings for O'Brien's first week are published Thursday. It's likely that, even with his declines, O'Brien will still emerge stronger among young people than Leno was. And given that rates for most TV ads are determined by a program's success in wooing viewers under 50, that may be more than enough for NBC.

The real battle is just beginning. Late-night rating trends tend to shift slowly, as viewers develop loyalties for this or that host over months or years. When Letterman took over his CBS show in 1993, he initially racked up big victories over Leno, but within a few years emerged as the perpetual runner-up.

The chaotic late-night race today bears little resemblance to that era. In the fall, NBC will launch a new 10 p.m. weeknight show with Leno. The impact of that program on O'Brien's ratings is yet to be seen. Meanwhile, both Letterman and O'Brien will have to keep an eye over their shoulders for ABC's Jimmy Kimmel, who after a touch-and-go start seems to have become a long-term player for the network. And of course broadcasters continue to shed late-night viewers to Adult Swim, Comedy Central and other alternatives.

In other words, in his race to stay atop the late-night ratings, O'Brien has not one but many rivals.

Oh screw you....so angry at Pas right now. I've been a loyal follower of conan since 2002 and although he has trouble when he has people who are way out there with brazen opinions: Bill Maher, Adam Carolla, or hardcore politicos; he tries to find stable middle ground with everyone and gives the audience a joyous silly atmosphere where they can find comfort and that in turn makes me feel comfort. Now, he isn't laugh out loud funny but he does give me a few heavy giggles throughout the hour and he does it consistently on a daily basis. Letterman, on the other hand, while not giving a fuck about his reputation and just making people like Sarah Palin, Bill O'Reilly (who is the only person I don't know at all personally who I hate with a passion I'm not a hardcore liberal. Moderate to very liberal on some issues, slightly conserative on others), Paris Hilton, John Mccain, and Spenser Pratt look like complete idiot douchebags-Letterman has become slightly stale with his routine. Because that's what it is. I know its sacralige to say this but Dave really never appealed to me as a viewer. I might be in the minority but at least I have the balls to say it.

Conan O'Brien Injured After Tonight Show Stunt

Conan O'Brien found out the hard way that physical comedy is harder than it looks.

The Tonight Show host, 46, reportedly suffered a concussion after hitting his head while filming a stunt for the show on Friday with Desperate Housewives actress Teri Hatcher.

The bit involving Hatcher, whose episode was canceled and replaced with a rerun, poked fun at her recent participation in a triathlon.

"We did this bit and at the very end, when we ran in to cross the finish line, he slipped as he was crossing the finish line and hit his head," Hatcher tells Entertainment Tonight of O'Brien's accident.

"He didn't get off floor right a way, but then he [seemed] like he recovered and [pulled] it together, and they did an instant replay, and you could really see his head hit the floor," the actress said. "He did go to hospital and he does have a concussion."

The NBC network confirmed O'Brien was taken to a local hospital for observation, but did not elaborate on his current condition.

In a statement, O'Brien, who took over the late-night staple from Jay Leno in June, used his trademark humor to reflect on the incident.

"Last thing I remember I was enjoying the play with Mrs. Lincoln, and the next thing I knew I was in bed being served cookies and juice" O'Brien said in the statement.

There is no word yet from NBC about plans for future Tonight Show episodes.

i hope he's alrite., but he got what was coming to him. i hope this wakes him up and makes him realise it's just not worth relying on fucking idiotic stunts every night just to appease Leno's (long-gone) carry over audience, or to try to recruit a new batch of meat heads.

it's like he decided to jump ship on his old audience and try desperately to amuse a much bigger (and dumber) crowd, and this is what happens. i bet his ratings will increase because all the jackasses who want BLOOD will be tuned in for another debacle. he should start each show with:

"hi, i'm Coney Sharsksville, welcome to I JUMPED IT"

Yeah, that's a nice thing to hope for, but it ain't gonna happen. Conan is consistently pleasant and occasionally pretty funny. But subversive is one thing he has never really been. He knew the mood and aesthetic he needed to provide for The Tonight Show and took the job anyways.

His bits on the old show weren't that much more discerning, just leaned a bit closer towards a marginalized sense of humor (a bit.)

The thing I most immediately miss in this transition is his guests have become a lot less interesting. No more Todd Solondz interviews. No more Jonathan Richman performances. Or at lost less, anyway.

Here's the biggest problem I have with this.  Late-night shows are hugely reliant on the shows leading into them, much more so even than primetime shows.  When Leno was hosting the Tonight Show, he had the benefit of NBC's (for a time) strong lineup of 10:00 shows, such as ER, the Law & Orders, West Wing, Third Watch, and whatever else.  Conan, on the other hand, has as his lead-in every single night Jay Leno's black hole of shit, where both comedy and ratings go to die.  Late-night ratings are basically centered around people simply not bothering to turn off their TVs yet, and while Leno got to be background music for the 10 million people who watch a typical episode of Law & Order, Conan has to deal with the 3-4 million who watch Jay's 10:00 show every godforsaken night.  It's not an even playing field, and if Leno claws his way back to 11:00 because of it, it'll be bullshit.

'Jay Leno Show' future uncertain
NBC considering moving the host to his former 11:35 p.m. slot
Source: Hollywood Reporter

Are Jay Leno's days in primetime numbered?

The future of NBC's "The Jay Leno Show" is in question as Web reports Thursday triggered all sorts of scenarios for the troubled program.

What is clear is that the network is reconsidering its commitment to Leno at 10 p.m., with moving him back to late-night being a credible option.

In such a scenario, Leno would return to 11:35 p.m. for a half-hour program, with Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Fallon shifting back a half-hour to 12:05 a.m. and 1:05 a.m., respectively. If he agrees to the plan, O'Brien would retain "the Tonight Show" name for his show.

TMZ first reported the possibility of a shift, saying the move will happen after next month's Winter Olympics, which pre-empt NBC's primetime programming for two weeks. NBC did not deny such a possibility.

But the time-period shift scenario would require NBC to fill five primetime hours very quickly.

The Peacock has ramped up development for next season with plans to order 18 pilots, including 10 dramas, but the new series would not be ready before summer. NBC also has several reality shows ready to roll, but such programs normally are designed to air from 8-10 p.m.

In any case, the rumors have roiled the industry: Eyebrows have been raised not only because NBC would be considering reversing its Leno plan but because it would be making such a drastic move in a few weeks. But looming for NBC is its Jan. 21 affiliate meeting, where it would face disgruntled station owners whose late newscasts were hit hard by the anemic "Leno" lead-in, and, in unfortunate timing, the network's Sunday session at the TV Critics Assn. press tour, where its top executives undoubtedly will be barraged with Leno questions.

Any change on "Leno" would represent an embarrassing about-face after NBC's numerous public statements pledging to give Leno months, even years, to grow into the slot; the net always emphasized that the show was a 52-week strategy.

The retreat also could represent a serious blow to NBC's executive leadership as its ownership shifts from GE to Comcast, especially since "Leno" impacted the network precisely as industry experts predicted -- and performed in its time period precisely as network execs repeatedly claimed that they anticipated, including in a statement Thursday morning.

That wasn't lost on Leno, who took a series of shots at NBC in his monologue Thursday night including, "What does NBC stand for -- never believe your contract?" He also suggested he might switch networks. "If we did get canceled, it will give us time to do some traveling," he said. "I understand that Fox is beautiful this time of year."

Some industry analysts and affiliate stations were downright elated by the news that the Peacock would shift the show out of its 10 p.m. slot.

"While NBC can be credited with a new approach to primetime programming, the ratings results were untenable not just for the network but for its partner affiliates," John Rash of Campbell Mithun said. "If the show is canceled, it's best to do it now in order to closely collaborate with the creative community to develop dramas for the 10 p.m. time slot as well as address the programming problems that now exist in late-night as well."

Bill Campbell of Katz TV stations added, "Stations have always believed that Jay Leno was best positioned in the 11:30 p.m. slot and would be happy to see a potentially stronger lead-in to their late local newscasts."

Thursday was rife with rampant Web speculation about the future of Leno and O'Brien following an early post on FTLive.com claiming that NBC was "pulling the plug" on Leno's primetime show and TMZ's subsequent time-shift story. That forced NBC to issue two statements, one denying that "Leno" was canceled but acknowledging that "it has presented some issues for our affiliates" and the other stating that the network brass "remain committed to keeping Conan O'Brien on NBC."

Someone tell me what is so bad about the Leno show?

Critics jumped on it immediately, but to me it's really no different than any late night show other than it's earlier time.

I guess I'm a weird late night viewer. I have no preference between hosts, I mostly just watch for interesting guests or musical artists.

I usually look at the Late Night TV schedule and if there are no interesting guests I watch something else.

Until Leno decides 'meh.....' again?

Leno played to the old guys, vanilla, no-too-out-there-for-late-night crowd which was fine. And maybe that group isn't willing to embrace O'Brien's sense of humor yet. Leno's sensebilities may be better for the short-run, but probably not the long run. He's already proven that. If he decides to pack it back in again in another year or two? Gonna approach Conan again? Because fallon sucks. He talks like he's not expelling air from his lungs, which has nothing to do with anything, but he's far too uptight for what he does.

How is Leno not better for the long run? Finacially, he is because he was beating Letterman in ratings right until the end. Conan's major problem with stepping into Leno's role is that there was no continuation of humor styles between Leno and Conan. They are opposites. The Tonight Show crowd fell out of favor and haven't returned since. When Leno was replacing Carson, there was a drop off in audience ratings for a little while, but Leno was able to quickly regain Carson's audience because their comedy styles were very similar.

Conan just wasn't meant to mesh into the role. If anything, he would be better off replacing Letterman because their styles are more similar, but audiences need two hosts that offset each other to give everyone a choice. People want a Leno/Carson style host to pick as an option. O'Brien isn't that.

Leno's crowd has a shelf life. His audience finds Letterman too harsh and out there. Not to say he's not funny. But your grandparent's would probably watch Leno over Letterman, which leaves Conan totally in the dark.

Carson and Jay's style do overlap, explaining his stepping in for Carson many times during his Dorito years. I'd bet Conan has far more fans which will be watching the Tonight Show in five years, rather than Leno.

I'm not trying to say Leno's bad, but he hits the lowest common denominator audience. And who's to say he won't want to change his situation again in another year or two, after they've pissed off Conan?

I don't think its Letterman's harshness. Definitely could be his being "out there" because I think it's his style that keeps Leno fans as Leno fans because I've never found Letterman to be funny and always preferred Leno. Puts me in a minority with this board, but I think Leno can tell meaner jokes. He just tells them straight so Leno is always beholden to the joke being funny on its own grounds which doesn't happen all that much. I just don't find Lettermann's physicality to be very funny.

I just don't see that happening. Carson survived decades with good ratings and Leno showed no signs of slowing down in his ratings. I think Conan has a niche audience and hasn't been able to translate over just yet. I also think he has too many similarities to Letterman and won't be reeling in any independent viewers or Letterman viewers. They will remain devoted to Letterman. He's not attracting the Leno crowd at all or getting enough of his old audience to regularly watch, but O'Brien also was starting to lose in his 12:30am slot so I just don't think he's that strong as far as hosting goes on major network broadcast. I wish he would go to Comedy Central, accept a smaller audience, and get more risky with his gags and become better.

Because they would have no one to turn to who is established in late night. Jimmy Fallon will have to stay in his time slot for a long time to come and Conan would never come back unless NBC was willing to break the bank in an unprecedented manner, but they won't because Conan will be no guarantee. Besides, NBC is struggling in general with its flagship channel. They need people like Leno who can make money without costing too much.

Jay Leno talk turns to Conan O'Brien
Speculation abounds that 'Tonight' host may switch networks
Source: Hollywood Reporter

On Thursday, the industry was abuzz about Jay Leno and the fate of his primetime talk show.

But on Friday, the focus shifted to another NBC host -- Conan O'Brien -- and speculation that he may jump to another network due to NBC's rollback effort reneging on his "Tonight Show" agreement.

If NBC gets its wish, the network could be in a strong position moving into next season. Scheduling a half-hour version of "The Jay Leno Show" at 11:35 p.m. and then an hourlong "Tonight" with O'Brien just after midnight would not only free up 10 p.m. for scripted programming but also fire two barrels onto CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman." Letterman's hour would, in effect, face both Leno and O'Brien. Between the two, it isn't hard to predict that NBC would easily reclaim its title of late-night leader.

Leno is apparently up for the change. But O'Brien hasn't signed on. If O'Brien skips to a rival network, the late-night landscape will be in for a whole new competitive makeover.

A source at ABC denied interest in O'Brien, expressing confidence in the network's current late-night figurehead, Jimmy Kimmel, whose show has posted gains this season. But a Fox source sent a clear signal of interest.

"We've always been interested in late-night, and we're always looking to bring great new talent to Fox," the well-placed source said. "While Conan would be a great fit for Fox, he's still under contract with NBC, so we'll just see how all of this plays out."

Forget Simon Cowell -- it's O'Brien who may be Fox's biggest X-factor.

Another way to read the comment is that Fox is merely mucking with a competitor. Remember, Fox's overtures toward O'Brien years ago helped push NBC into locking down the former "Simpsons" writer by promising him "The Tonight Show" in 2009, a agreement whose implications are still being played out. Even if O'Brien stays at NBC, another network expressing interest puts pressure on a rival.

There are also a couple contractual wrinkles that discourage a O'Brien changing networks. One is that O'Brien's contract includes a $40 million penalty fee if NBC takes away the "Tonight Show." The network seems confident that by keeping the program's name unchanged -- even if the time period moves -- that it doesn't violate his contract. Another is that O'Brien's contract may not allow him to change networks, at least not right away, though one report suggested that NBC wouldn't block him.

In the meantime, the clock is ticking.

NBC would love to have a positive resolution to its current debacle to announce at its press tour session Sunday. And with affiliates getting antsy, the network prefers to make a change shortly after its Winter Olympics coverage.

People close to O'Brien say the host has received overtures from "several places" and that he will likely not make a decision before March 1.

Though even if Leno and O'Brien get sorted, there's always the possibility of more news stemming from other changes in NBC's late-night lineup.

"Nobody is talking about Jimmy Fallon," marveled an NBC insider.

Or Carson Daly.

"Yeah, or Carson Daly."

Jay Leno exiting primetime
NBC planning to put scripted programming back at 10 p.m.
Source: Hollywood Repoter

NBC Universal TV Entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin confirmed Sunday to reporters at the Television Critics Assn. press tour in Pasadena that the network is going "back to basics" -- scripted programming at 10 p.m., talk shows in late-night and a traditional network upfront in May.

"I can confirm that starting Feb. 12, Jay Leno will no longer air at 10 p.m.," Gaspin told the packed auditorium. "While it was performing at acceptable levels, it did not meet our affiliates' needs. My goal right now is to keep Jay (Leno), Conan (O'Brien) and Jimmy (Fallon) as part of our late-night lineup. As much as I'd like to tell you we have a done deal, we know that's not true."

NBC has asked Leno to move to 11:35 p.m. as a half-hour show, followed by O'Brien's hourlong "Tonight Show" and Fallon's one-hour "Late Night." Leno is expected to agree to the change, though it's unclear if O'Brien is willing to stay with the network. One way or another, Gaspin said he expects the network will have a new schedule in place before the Olympics begin next month.

"I can't imagine we won't have everything in place before then," he said.

Gaspin was uncertain at this juncture what will air instead of "The Jay Leno Show" at 10 p.m. but estimated in the short term there will be "two hours of scripted, another reality hour and combination of 'Dateline' or repeats."

When asked why NBC abandoned its 52-week strategy with Leno, giving him a year to settle into primetime before making any decisions, Gaspin pointed to affiliate concerns.

"I would have liked nothing more than to give this a 52-week try," Gaspin said. "Affiliates started calling, saying local news was being impacted more than expected. In some cases, they had the No. 1 news show, and now they were No. 3."

After affiliates began to informally threaten to pre-empt the telecast due to slacking ratings for their local newscasts, their displeasure was going to become "a PR issue" for the network and Gaspin said he felt compelled to act quickly.

"This was not an issue for the network; it was an issue for our affiliates," he said. "We were making money at 10 p.m. I think over time (Leno show ratings) might have started to grow. For the network, it was not yet a wrong decision."

The proposed shift wasn't an easy decision -- or an easy sell to NBC Uni president and CEO Jeff Zucker. Gaspin said he decided before the December holiday break that he needed to make a change. He had multiple conversations with Zucker, explaining in each why every other possibility (such as scaling back Leno to fewer nights) wasn't going to work.

"I did an analysis of all the possible changes I could make," Gaspin said. "(I told him) this was our best choice and probably our only choice."

Pressed on whether "Leno Show" was a mistake, Gaspin said, "I don't think its wrong to take chances. We might have been too early on this one."

Even while pledging to return to a more traditional network model, Gaspin expressed some skepticism about whether 10 p.m. is truly viable for scripted programming. He noted that "Leno Show" lost NBC nine-tenths of a rating point this fall, yet competitors ABC and CBS, which largely stayed with drama series in the hour, likewise lost a tenth of a point each.

"I handed them nine-tenths of a rating point each, and they each lost a tenth," Gaspin said. "Tell me there's not a problem with 10 p.m. on broadcast."

Leno, O'Brien and Fallon, Gaspin said, were "incredibly gracious and professional" when told the news.

"I made the tough call," Gaspin said. "They all understood the situation I was in. ... Beyond that, it was a private conversation."

The hosts have the weekend to think about the proposed changes. "Last Call" host Carson Daly, however, might be the odd man out, with Gaspin saying only that Daly would "remain part of the NBC family."

On the programming side, Gaspin confirmed the pickup of several pilots and announced that the network is developing a Los Angeles-based "Law & Order," which was jokingly dubbed "LOLA." He announced that Howie Mandel would take over for David Hasselhoff as a judge on "America's Got Talent." NBC will air a preview of Jerry Seinfeld's new reality series "The Marriage Ref" after the Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony -- a network first.

After experimenting with an April "infront" for the past two years, the network will return to a traditional upfront presentation on May 17, giving its programrs more time to produce a crop a pilots.

"I almost don't care how quickly it happens, as long as it happens," Gaspin said of his goal to improve the network's lineup. "As long as I see an hour going up instead of going to the side or down, I'll be happy. ... In some cases, going back to basics is the smartest play."

Leno is a terrible lead in at 10pm. When hosting the Tonight Show, he came after the nightly news and did better business. The whole point of this late night chatter is about the bankability of Leno back at his old place, not at 10pm.

Conan O'Brien Says He Won't Host 'Tonight Show' Following Leno
Source: NYTimes

Conan O'Brien says he will not host "The Tonight Show" if it is moved to 12:05 a.m.

In a statement Tuesday afternoon, Mr. O'Brien said he cannot participate "in what I honestly believe is its destruction."

Last week NBC outlined a plan to move "The Jay Leno Show" to 11:35 p.m. in March, elbowing Mr. O'Brien's "Tonight Show" back half an hour. Mr. Leno seems supportive of the plan; but in his statement, Mr. O'Brien rejects it outright. The statement reads:

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I've been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I've been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I've been absurdly lucky. That said, I've been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn't the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn't matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it's always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

After 16 years making a name with his distinctive brand of intellectually silly comedy on NBC's "Late Night" show, Mr. O'Brien replaced Mr. Leno as the host of "The Tonight Show" a mere seven months ago. He is just the fifth man to lead "Tonight," after Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson and Mr. Leno.

i see his point. but i still think he should ride out Leno's inevitable failure at 11:35, after which he would regain top spot and even if it's a struggle to regain a significant audience (given that i stopped watching since the move to LA and the focus on LA itself is a huge turn off to me) it would in the end be worth it to say I TOLD YOU SO and to keep doing the show he loves.

Patton Oswalt said it best (http://www.thrfeed.com/2010/01/patton-oswalt-on-leno-and-conan-shakeup-audio.html) about Leno, he appeals to ppl who generally have very little interest in quality television or quality comedy, and the kind of ppl who made The Cleveland Show a reality. it's a combination of meatheads and just plain dullards that kept Leno in business all this time. The success of Jay Walking is the biggest indicator of the kind of ppl who enjoy his show and fill his audience - larry the cable guy type idiots who would like to pretend they are above standard american idiocy just because they get the chance to laugh at it. it's no wonder he also laughs at stupid criminals, and that he loves things that go VROOOOOOOM VROOOOOOOOOM.. U-S-A! U-S-A!

gimme a break, fuck leno and fuck what he has done to late nite tv.

Well, this is probably a power play anyway.  The network knows that if he leaves, Leno will get his old spot back (which is probably what would happen even if Conan stayed, really, people still like Jay) and then Conan will go somewhere else and become competition.

He's giving them the choice and not letting them push him around (though I guess he could end up caving if they call him on it).

Letterman is coming out on top of all this.  He's having a hell of a good time talking about it.  Gives him an opportunity to speak on what a pain in the ass the old Late Night wars were.  He talks shit about Leno, clearly respects Conan, and disses Carson Daly.

I think Kimmel wins?

I just can't understand how Leno can continue to talk about how he was "canceled" on The Tonight Show.  He's made several jokes about it.  Saying you're going to quit the tonight show in five years and then doing it is not getting canceled.  He's trying to buddy up next to Conan as a fellow victim and no one is buying it.  In the end he'll come off as the classless, unfunny asshole he's always been and his entire audience won't notice or care.

So now I keep hearing that Leno was pushed out of The Tonight Show, or asked to leave, or whatever.  As I remember it he just randomly announced he would be ready to call it quits in 5 years back in 2004.  Am I remembering this wrong?

And I agree, this really is making for great television.  Late Night hasn't been so exciting since the writers strike.

right now the major networks are laughing all the way to the bank too. this couldn't have happened at a better time for them. late night shows were starting to be marginalized by colbert etc. and since Conan seemed to be forced to tone down his act for the Tonight Show the next generation of viewers had no one to turn to. things must be really bad at NBC for them to seriously consider this. although controversy always brings ratings, Leno's first show got a bump due to Kanye West's debacle, so if this is their intention it's a brilliant move (although that's obviously not the case)

it's a nice touch how everyone seems to like Conan and are refusing to slander him.

Conan should take his show to Comedy Central post Stewart/Colbert. I really love his Tonight Show but some of that Late Night edginess has been lost in an earlier time slot. I think if Conan moved to cable, he could bring back some of that authenticity we've been missing. I'm cool with a Fox show too, but I'd much rather see an unrestrained Conan again.

Also, fuck Leno. I've always thought he was an unfunny douchebag.

Everybody's against Leno now, so it'll be interesting to see how that affects what happens, if at all.

If you go to Hulu, nearly all the tags for The Jay Leno Show are things like, "backstabber," "unfunny," "hack," etc.

That's Hulu though.  A younger crowd, who would obviously be more into Conan.

The truth of the matter is that after what Dick "mouth" Ebersol has said about Conan, he probably won't want to stay even if they let him keep The Tonight Show which means Leno will get it and he'll get good ratings.
Bad guys win in television.

Whoever ends up actually taking Leno's place for The Tonight Show will probably be another Leno... a weasel who can play the suck-up game and give up any former talent they had (Leno was one of the best standup comics of his time, he was funny, he just stopped being funny so he could make money).

Leno: 'I have no animosity ... this is all business'
Source: Hollywood Reporter

Jay Leno defended himself Monday against attackers accusing the talk-show host of rolling back on his agreement to hand "The Tonight Show" over to Conan O'Brien. Leno addressed the situation while taping "The Jay Leno Show."

Here are Leno's complete remarks to his audience:

I thought maybe I should address this.  At least give you my view of what has been going on here at NBC.

Oh, let's start in 2004.  2004 I'm sitting in my office, an NBC executive comes in and says to me, listen, Conan O'Brien has gotten offers from other networks. We don't want him to go, so we're going to give him 'The Tonight Show.'  I said, 'well, I've been number one for 12 years.'  They said, 'we know that, but we don't think you can sustain that.'  I said, 'okay. How about until I fall to number two, then you fire me?'  'No, we made this decision.'  I said, 'That's fine.'  Don't blame Conan O'Brien. Nice guy, good family guy, great guy. He and I have talked and not a problem since then. That's what managers and people do, they try to get something for their clients. I said, 'I'll retire just to avoid what happened the last time.' Okay.

So time goes by and we stay number one up until the day we leave. We hand - (applause)-No, no. Okay, but I'm leaving before my contract is out. About six to eight months early. So before I could go anywhere else, I would be at least a year or 18 months before I could go and do a show somewhere else. I said to NBC, 'would you release me from my contract.' They said, 'we want to keep you here.' Okay. What are your ideas? They said, 'how about primetime?' I said, 'that will never work.' No, no, we want to put you on at 10:00. We have done focus groups. People will love you at 10:00. Look at these studies showing Jay's chin at 10:00. People will go crazy. Didn't seem like a good idea at the time. I said, 'alright, can I keep my staff?' There are 175 people that work here. I said, 'can I keep my staff?' Yes, you can. Let's try it.  We guarantee you two years on the air, guaranteed. Now for the first four or five months against original shows like "CSI" you'll get killed, but in the spring and summer when the reruns come, that's when you'll pick up. Okay, great. I agree to that.

Four months go by, we don't make it. Meanwhile, Conan's show during the summer, we're not on, was not doing well. The great hope was that we would help him. Well, we didn't help him any, okay. They come and go, 'this show isn't working. We want to let you go.' Can you let me out of my contract? No, you're still a valuable asset to this company. How valuable can I be? You fired me twice. How valuable can I be? Okay. So then, the affiliates are not happy. The affiliates are the ones that own the TV stations. They're the ones that sort of makes the decisions, they're not happy with your performance and Conan is not doing well at 11:30. I said, 'what's your idea?' They said, 'well, look, how about you do a half hour show at 11:30?' Now, where I come from, when your boss gives you a job and you don't do it well, I think we did a good job here, but we didn't' get the ratings, so you get humbled. I said, 'okay, I'm not crazy about doing a half hour, but okay. What do you want to do with Conan?' We'll put him on at midnight, or 12:05, keeps "The Tonight Show" does all that, he gets the whole hour. I said, okay. You think Conan will go for that? Yes, yes.  (laughter) Almost guarantee you. I said okay. Shake hands, that's it. I don't have a manager, I don't have an agent, that's my handshake deal.

Next thing I see Conan has a story in the paper saying he doesn't want to do that. They come back to me and they say if he decides to walk and doesn't want to do it, do you want the show back? I go, 'yeah, I'll take the show back. If that's what he wants to do. This way, we keep our people working, fine.' So that's pretty much where we are. It looks like we might be back at 11:30, I'm not sure. I don't know. (applause) I don't know. But through all of this - through all of this, Conan O'Brien has been a gentleman. He's a good guy. I have no animosity towards him. This is all business. If you don't get the ratings, they take you off the air. I think you know this town, you can do almost anything. You get ratings they keep you. I don't get ratings, he wants. That was NBC's solution. It didn't work so we might have an answer for you tomorrow. So, we'll see. That's basically where it is.

If anyone ever listens to Bill Simmons podcast, he's a sports writer for ESPN and an overall hilarious dude always dropping references to The Wire and Boogie Nights, he used to be a writer for Kimmel and he said that Jay Leno is a jerk behind the scenes. Like if Kimmel would get a guest on his show before they went on Leno, Leno would not allow that guest to ever come on his show. All kinds of shady shit. Fuck Leno.

Leno had the opportunity to agree with Conan and tell NBC that a 12:05 Tonight Show wasn't fair to him. Instead he chose the well-traveled road of laying down like a bitch and taking it from Zucker and his cronies. I can't wait until Conan switches to Fox or whatever his plans might be. He is going to destroy Leno with actual good shows as a lead in. NBC will realize how big of a mistake they made. I watched Conan last night on "Inside the Actor's Studio" and he made a comment which made total sense to me. Mind you this was recorded while Conan was still with the Late Show. Anyway, he commented that his Late Show took a year or two to pickup steam. It took a little bit of time to build an audience, just like it's taking a little bit of time to gain trust at 11:35. NBC should have let Conan have a couple of years. Seven months is barely enough time for foreplay in the TV world and it certainly didn't help that Leno's show was awful as a lead in.

Early Conan was boring as fuck anyways. Leno deserves that spot because he sucks so bad.

Leno appeals to people who aren't funny. Have you ever met a Leno fan who had a sense of humor? I haven't. He's an accountant ass talk show host.

Put Conan later or better yet, on FOX where they may let him get away with more, earlier.

Its too late, theres too much bad blood now.  This is a done deal.  All we can do now is enjoy the 4 episodes that are left with Conan at the helm of TTS.  The way I see it this is the end of The Tonight Show as a great franchise in television.  Really Leno killed it years and years ago, but there was always that glimmer of hope left knowing that Conan would take it over one day.  Thats all over now. NBC's late night lineup is just as bad as everything else on the network (except thursday nights, those are great). Leno+Fallon=fail. Letterman has always been the best anyways.

I just hope Norm gets to be a guest on Conan one last time (the guests for his final shows are still unknown).

Yeah. I mean I don't go out of my way to see it, but I laughed pretty hard last night.

The closest I've ever seen in real life was one time for MLK the paper accidentally printed:
"We Be Closed" on one of the bank's ads before MLK day.

Of course, that would not be PC enough to even make it on Headlines - or really funny for that matter.

I like having the earlier show because I don't get to stay up late enough to see all of the others because of work.

Conan O'Brien deal finalized
Deal worth a reported $45-$50 million
Source: Hollywood Reporter

Conan O'Brien is a free agent.

Lawyers for the talk show host and NBC on early Thursday morning finalized a settlement sealing O'Brien's exit from "The Tonight Show."

The settlement is said to be worth between $45-$50 million, in line with the annual production cost of "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien." According to the Wall Street Journal, O'Brien is getting $32 million from NBC, with the network also agreeing to pay his staff $12 million in severance.

NBC also announced the return of Jay Leno as "Tonight" host. He'll start March 1.

"We're pleased that Jay is returning to host the franchise that he helmed brilliantly and successfully for many years," said Jeff Gaspin, chairman of NBC Uni TV. "He is an enormous talent, a consummate professional and one of the hardest-working performers on television."

"Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" will continue as part of NBC's lineup, airing as usual at 12:35 a.m.

Next week, NBC will air Conan O'Brien repeats in the slot.

Under the deal, O'Brien will be sidelined until Sept. 1, when can return to TV as the host of a show on another network.

As first reported by THR.com, NBC will retain the rights to characters that O'Brien created.

While in public statements News Corp. brass have been cautious about the prospect of launching a late-night show at 10 p.m., Fox remains very high on snatching O'Brien. It is expected to open more formal talks right away, with some speculating an announcement about an O'Brien-fronted show on Fox could come as early as next month.

The decision to scrap the low-rated "Jay Leno Show" at 10 p.m. and bring Leno back to NBC's late-night lineup was made by NBC Universal's entertainment chief Jeff Gaspin who led the negotiations with O'Brien's reps along with NBC Entertainment chairman Marc Graboff.

NBC has no plans to promote the end of "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien," whose last original will air Friday. The network will mount a big promotional push for the March 1 return of Leno to "Tonight" during the Winter Olympics.

The deal puts an end to weeks of speculation about O'Brien's "Tonight Show" departure. O'Brien held the job for only seven months -- after waiting five years to take the position while hosting NBC's "Late Night."

"This whole experience has been so surreal," O'Brien told his "Tonight" audience Wednesday night. "I never thought I'd be jealous of the long, illustrious run that NBC gave 'Joey.'"

this guy's spot on.

the tonight show was like the american presidency at the time Conan took over. it had jumped the shark long before conan came along, but whether 7 monfs is or isn't enuff time to see what he could hav done once the boring-as-fuck novelty of being in LA had worn off, the fact was the weight of the show was always going to stifle him creatively.

all of his dreams about what he wanted to do with the show, stuff like he wrote in his quittin letter, should have started happening already.. maybe. but the whole format just fucking sucked to begin with. no more max interaction? god, apart from the excessive focus on playing to Los Angeles stereotypes (shut the FUCK up with the latino bullshit OK?? you were funny as an IRISH PIRATE LEPRECHAUN not as one-note conando), what i hated the most was the inclusion of andy. he adds NOTHING. his quips are shit, and appears to hav no chemistry with conan anymore than a cardboard cut out of tiffany thiessen had with mark-paul gosselaar. at least when max failed to hav any chemistry with conan THAT WAS THE JOKE, and a good one at that,.

it's such a shame that it took the destruction of the franchise to bring conan back from the dead comedically. this week has been great.. especially the return of the masturbating bear! but i hope wherever he goes, whatever he does next, he'll try to be funny and not just pander to the most obvious and superficial among his location/demographic/whatever, he was becoming Leno and it's good riddance to that alternate reality. like that dude said.

Conan O'Brien exploring options
Late-night host is being courted by several networks
Source: Hollywood Reporter

Conan O'Brien is a free agent after his $33 million settlement with NBC was finally completed early Thursday morning -- but his hiatus probably won't last long.

As part of the overall payout from the Peacock, worth about $52.6 million with staff severance and shutdown costs, O'Brien will be allowed to join another network Sept. 1. With his demo ratings on "The Tonight Show" and his online popularity soaring during the final two weeks of his seven-month tenure, the comedian already is being courted by a number of networks.

Because O'Brien was formally under contract with NBC until Thursday morning, no formal talks have been initiated, but there have been a lot of informal inquiries.

Fox is the most logical option as that network has been trying to get into the late-night fray for decades and its brass repeatedly have stated their interest in O'Brien, whose core younger audience is a perfect fit for Fox's target demo.

Several cablers, including Fox sibling FX, USA, TNT/TBS, Comedy Central, HBO and Showtime, reportedly also have sent out feelers to explore the possibility of bringing O'Brien into their folds.

O'Brien's longtime manager Gavin Polone wouldn't be drawn on specifics about his client's plans but noted that he would like to "take advantage of all the momentum" on TV and online, where the popularity of "I'm with Coco"/"Team Conan" movements is growing rapidly.

With his quirky, offbeat sensibility, the comedian could be well suited for the cable world.

And he could feasibly do both cable and broadcast, said Shari Anne Brill, senior vp at ad buyer Carat.

Because clearing a late-night show with O'Brien on Fox would require extensive discussions with the network's affiliates that have commitments for airing off-net comedies in the 11 p.m. hour, O'Brien could debut on FX and then move to the broadcast network at a later date, she said.

First-run syndication is a longer shot. While Sony TV pursued a syndicated show with Jay Leno before he decided to stay at NBC for a primetime stint, syndicators do not seem in a hurry to raise their hands.

The reason: The main target for such a show would be the Fox stations, which, if interested in a late-night show with O'Brien, would give their blessing to Fox and get it from the network.

The dramatic denouement between O'Brien and NBC -- which was done at 1 a.m. PT and completely signed off at 3 a.m. -- was a fitting finale for the twists and turns of the past weeks.

The final $52.6 million tab include the $33 million settlement for O'Brien, about $7 million to pay out the contracts of "Tonight" sidekick Andy Richter and executive producer Jeff Ross and the rest going for severance expenses and shutdown costs.

The payoffs for the show's staffers, apparently more generous than the standard exit deals, are being supplemented by checks from O'Brien.

"He just wants to make sure they are taken care of," Polone said.

Ironically, despite the acrimonious divorce, O'Brien will stay in business with NBC through his company Conaco, which will remain based at NBC until the end of this development season and has several projects in contention at the network.

Also staying behind are the characters created by O'Brien on "Late Night" and "Tonight," whose rights are owned by NBC.

During his second-to-last "Tonight" on Thursday, O'Brien "revealed" some provisions from his contract with NBC.

Among them: "I am prohibited from coming within 500 yards of 11:30," and "I'm not allowed to make fun of NBC programming; I have to let the programming speak for itself."

Meanwhile, announcing his March 1 return to "Tonight" on his primetime show Thursday, Leno said, "I have chosen to stay on the Titanic."

Analyzing the aftermath of NBC's late-night shifts during the past seven months, most media pundits agree the network has been hurt.

"The decisions have hurt both NBC in the ratings and more importantly with their viewers who have to question whether the management at NBC knows what they are doing," Katz TV programming head Bill Carroll said.

John Rash, senior vp at Campbell Mithun, called the late-night fight "a distraction" at a time when the viewers' attention should've been focused on the upcoming Olympics.

NBC's fortnight of Olympics coverage will actually help put the late-night drama behind, according to Brill.

"It gives NBC a hiatus and hope that the public has some amnesia," she said.

As for the effects on Leno's ratings on "Tonight," Brill said, "It may hurt him for a little while, but I think the audience will come back."

Conan is a classy man, and i would just like to say his situation clearly didn't call for classy action. Conan is a very very smart man though, and was able to maintain the wise attitude about it.  I caught the last 8 episodes, and that man has made history, these last episodes were some of the most amazing middle fingers ever. To a large corp.  I truly believe that even though money was made because of Conan's actions, we can understand that people were tuning in because they knew history was happening. Look, Conan got bent over and his account got serviced, if you know what i mean. We got to see a smart man's reaction to the fucking conglomerate money grubbing assholes (WITH THIS NEW LEGISLATION BEING PASSED TOO!!! FUCK).  Conan is just a individual, and he was still able to  great stabs at the network.

"Man it cost the company a lot to play Zeppelin."

i thought the bugatti thing was real but they only had to rent one not buy one for the bit since it wasn't actually ruined by adding the costume to it. the mink thing was pretty unrealistic since it was sposed to be on a supposedly valuable horse which again would not need to be BOUGHT to hav it appear in the sketch, obviously that was just a random horse anyway. and everything in the last one - caviar picasso skeleton - was fake. the joke is not in the price but in the hilarious combination of expensive things to create a character. like all his classic characters.

SO many great characters and sketches i will forever miss, personal faves were:
-the interrupter.. i LOVED the switcheroo at the end, what a great character that would be sure to kill a few minutes (always the aim of any sketch in a nightly talk show)
- small talk moment/sports talk moment/anything like that between conan and max., they final silence that would go on forever was genius, it relied on their lack of chemistry but at the same time was the ONE time they had pefect comedic chemistry.
- pierre bernard's recliner of rage.. this guy, what a guy! i don't know how much involvement his writers had in giving him material, i think they just asked him about whatever was bothering him and then put it into a monologue format.. however they did it, little bernard was endearing and hilarious and a really GREAT way of seeing hilarity in nerdiness. the sketch displayed the exact OPPOSITE of the Leno mentality, he would've only used this dude to make fun of him for not caring about cars.
- and of course the walker texas ranger lever.

i also liked vomiting kermit and the fun hole guy.

NBC, Conan O'Brien back in business
Network picks up 'Justice' pilot from O'Brien's production firm
Source: Hollywood Reporter

Conan O'Brien is getting "Justice" at NBC after all.

Days after the network severed ties with O'Brien as host of "The Tonight Show," it picked up an hourlong pilot from O'Brien's production company, Conaco.

Additionally, NBC has ordered multicamera comedy pilot "The Pink House."

Both shows hail from UMS.

The untitled O'Brien project, known as "Justice," was written by John Eisendrath. Described as a new take on a law show with a larger-than-life character at the center, it follows an ex-Supreme Court justice who quits the Court to start his own legal practice.

Eisendrath is executive producing, with O'Brien, his longtime executive producer Jeff Ross and Conaco's David Kissinger also expected to serve as exec producers.

As part of O'Brien's $33 million settlement with NBC, his NBC-based company was to continue to operate at NBC Uni through the end of the development season.

It would be truly ironic if, following his acrimonious divorce from NBC, O'Brien delivers a hit show for the network as a parting gift.

The pilot pickup for the Eisendrath's script, which had been one of the most buzzed about at NBC in the past couple of weeks, marks the third legal drama pilot on the network's slate for next season, along with "Rex Is Not Your Lawyer" and David E. Kelley's "Kindreds."

"Pink House," from writers Rick Weiner and Kenny Schwartz ("American Dad), centers on two guy friends who move to Los Angeles post-college.

Scott Stuber is exec producing.

After Conan joked during his last show that he'd like the Oscar-winning redhead actress [Tilda Swinton] to play him in an HBO movie, Movieline.com asked Swinton about it in an interview at Sundance this week.

"I've heard about Conan! I'm so thrilled," the actress told Movieline. And when asked if she would accept the role, she answered "Yes, yes, yes, absolutely." Swinton went on to joke that in return, Conan should do interviews promoting her movie, "I Am Love," at Sundance.

Kevin Eubanks exiting as Leno bandleader
'Tonight Show' announcer John Melendez shifted in revamp
Source: Hollywood Reporter

Changes are coming to Jay Leno's revamped "Tonight Show."

Leno's longtime bandleader Kevin Eubanks is leaving the program, and announcer John Melendez will no longer provide voiceover for the show.

Eubanks will still appear on the revamped "Tonight Show" when it debuts March 1, but the guitarist is currently negotiating an exit date with NBC. Sources expect Eubanks will depart within months of the show's return.

The oft-amused Eubanks joined the "Tonight" in 1992 and took over as bandleader in 1995. Eubanks then followed Leno to his short-lived "Jay Leno Show."

As for Melendez, the former Howard Stern sidekick still expected to continue as a writer on the show.

The network also unveiled a new logo for "Tonight," a more sophisticated-looking and darker image than those used in the past.

Conan O'Brien weighing live tour
Talk show host may perform at U.S., European venues
By Associated Press

Conan O'Brien may be taking his act on the road and even overseas.

The former "Tonight Show" host is weighing a tour that would take him directly to his fans, according to a person familiar with the proposal.

The person, who was not authorized to publicly discuss the plans, spoke on condition of anonymity.

Details are unsettled, the person said, but O'Brien may perform live in U.S. venues, including college campuses, and head to Europe. An O'Brien spokesman declined comment.

As part from his settlement with NBC over his exit from "Tonight," O'Brien is not allowed to make TV appearances until September but the pact doesn't bar him from doing live performances.

The tour could be a prelude to a new talk show for the comedian, who left "Tonight" in January when NBC tried to bump him to a midnight slot. Possibilities include Fox, which expressed interest.

Jay Leno reclaims "Tonight" next month.

Lorne Michaels says Conan O'Brien will prevail
Speaks out on the saga at 'Saturday Night Live' discussion
Source: Hollywood Reporter

NEW YORK -- "Saturday Night Live" creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels predicted Tuesday night that Conan O'Brien would prevail after his recent departure from "The Tonight Show" and NBC.

He also said he is not in a hurry to retire, because he is very engaged in the show and enjoys it. "There will be a time for that," Michaels quipped. "It will be very difficult for me to stop."

He also said he feels it is important to keep an old-school variety show on the air as networks nowadays wouldn't launch a new one. "This will be the last of it," he said.

Michaels, who used to executive produce "Late Night With Conan O'Brien," said he originally picked the comedian because he was "very smart," "just brilliant" and had an "amazing character." After early struggles, he prevailed, he added. "And I'm sure he will again," Michaels added.

He made his comments at "Live From New York," a discussion led by the New Yorker's Ken Auletta with Michaels and "SNL" head writer Seth Meyers.

Michaels danced around the question about the reason for the O'Brien-Jay Leno disaster. "There was a lot of worry and concern" that Leno could go to another network when the transition to O'Brien as "Tonight Show" host neared, he said, which is why Leno was given the 10 p.m. slot. But this meant that O'Brien did "not necessarily" have a good lead-in.

Meyers suggested the original promise to make O'Brien Leno's replacement years before the actual handover was problematic, too. "You can't tell someone that you want to stay married for five years" and then get a divorce, he said.

Various questions Tuesday night surrounded SNL's celebration of its 35th anniversary this year and its longevity.

Execution is more important than the comedic idea, Meyers and Michaels said. The former mentioned the popular "Dick in a Box" skit with Justin Timberlake as one example of an idea that might not have sounded as funny before it was written and performed to perfection.

Michaels said skits must play during the dress rehearsal, with the best sketches seeing performer and writing in perfect harmony. "It's almost never the idea," he said. "It's all about how you do it."

Auletta also asked Meyers about a comment by Tina Fey that "30 Rock" character Jack Donaghy was modeled after Michaels. "There are definitely a lot of seeds of Lorne in Alec Baldwin's character," he said.

The event was organized by the New Yorker and the S.I. Newhouse School.

Conan O'Brien to go on tour
Comedian to start 2-month, 30-city theater tour on April 12
Source: Hollywood Reporter

Conan and the gang are hitting the road.

After weeks of speculation, former "Tonight Show" host Conan O'Brien announced today that he will headline a 2-month, 30-city tour that will kick off April 12.

The tour is titled "Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television," after a clause in O'Brien's exit contract with NBC that doesn't allow him to appear on TV until September.

In keeping with O'Brien's knack for unorthodox choices, recently showcased in his decision to pick a random Michigan woman as the only person he would follow on Twitter, O'Brien will launch the tour not in Los Angeles or New York but in Eugene, Oregon.

O'Brien will be joined by longtime sidekick Andy Richter and the former "Tonight Show" band.

He will visit theaters in at least 20 states and 2 Canadian provinces.

"It was either a massive 30-city tour or start helping out around the house" said O'Brien, who has been sharing experiences from his post-"Tonight" life at home through his recently launched Twitter account.

He used Twitter to announce the tour Thursday morning.

"Hey Internet: I'm headed to your town on a half-assed comedy & music tour," he wrote, sending followers to teamcoco.com for tickets.

He quickly sent a second message noting that teamcoco.com had been jammed with too much traffic and later announced that the tour will be adding a second show in both New York and Chicago.

"I'll be doing all Liza Minneli songs," he wrote.

American Express is sponsoring the tour and ticket prices will start at $39.50.

"It promises to be a night of music, comedy, hugging, and the occasional awkward silence," the organizers said.

Fox discusses deal with Conan O'Brien
The network may have a viable plan to bring the comedian back to late night, sources say.
Source: Los Angeles Times

Fox Broadcasting is inching closer to bringing Conan O'Brien back to late night.

Key Fox executives, including Rupert Murdoch, are on board with the plan and would like to finalize a deal in coming weeks so they can make a splash on May 17 when the network unveils its fall lineup. Several significant issues remain and the Fox talks could fall apart, according to people close to the negotiations who asked anonymity because the discussions were meant to be private.

But people close to O'Brien are cautiously optimistic.

"We'll get there," one of them said Tuesday.

Fox executives have been huddling to figure out how much it will cost to mount a late-night talk show that would be profitable for Fox stations and affiliates. Stations, hammered by the advertising recession, rely on the profits generated by syndicated reruns such as "The Simpsons" and "The Office," and it's unclear how many stations would be willing to substitute those shows for a risky venture -- even one starring a big-name host.

Fox realizes that if it ever wants to get into the late-night game, this is the time.

The network, owned by Murdoch's News Corp., has had its eye on entering the late-night talk show wars for years. Indeed, it was Fox's overtures to O'Brien nine years ago that prompted NBC's Jeff Zucker to promise O'Brien "The Tonight Show" to keep him at the peacock network. Zucker's plan famously unraveled when Jay Leno decided he wasn't ready to retire.

Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly and Entertainment Chairman Peter Rice have been leading the campaign to bring O'Brien to Fox, according to knowledgeable people. But their bosses have told them to demonstrate that a late show would be financially viable. A breakthrough came last week when they outlined a late-night scenario that one executive described as "a deal that we could live with."

It hasn't been decided whether the show would launch in the fall or January.

Fox, however, is unwilling to spend the money that NBC had been paying to support "The Tonight Show" with O'Brien. NBC spent close to $90 million a year to produce the show, which included O'Brien's salary of more than $12 million a year. Fox wants to spend less than $60 million a year for the show, said people close to the discussions.

O'Brien's camp is weighing whether it can pull off a high-quality show with the smaller budget -- or if it should shift to cable.

The major hurdle comes from Fox stations, which are obligated to air reruns at specific time periods, in some cases after the 10 p.m. news. That would mean forcing a proposed O'Brien show, at least initially, to air at different time periods: 11 p.m. in some markets, 11:30 -- or later -- in other cities.

"Without a uniform start time, it would be hard to get traction for a show and hard to promote it," said Jason Maltby, a top ad buyer for the firm Mindshare. "Saying, 'Check your local listings' doesn't have the same ring to it as saying, ' "The Tonight Show at 11:35 p.m." ' "

After the expiration of the stations' agreements for sitcoms in late night, the O'Brien show would run at the same time -- likely 11 p.m. The challenge would be getting to the two-year mark by maintaining a large enough audience and enough advertisers to make the show successful.

"Late night is already pretty full -- everyone has carved out their own niche," said Maltby. "It comes down to the available audience and how you slice it."

Fox is the likely outlet for a traditional network late-night show, but it's not O'Brien's only option, said people close to the comedian. Several cable channels have expressed an interest, although Comedy Central -- which would appear to be a natural fit -- is not on the list, these people said.

Comedy Central already has its big stars in late night, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, so the earliest available time period for O'Brien would be at midnight.

That would not be acceptable to O'Brien, who surrendered "The Tonight Show" when NBC said it planned to shift his start time to 12:05 a.m.

O'Brien's team also is working to secure a soundstage for a new show and could use the same facility on the Universal lot that NBC spent nearly $50 million to refurbish for O'Brien to take over "The Tonight Show" in June. The soundstage -- the home of the Jack Benny show -- is large enough to accommodate skits, a band and a studio audience -- and is close to Lankershim Boulevard, making it easy to manage crowds who come to the show.

NBC Universal has said it would lease the space to O'Brien, despite the tensions that exploded when O'Brien refused to accept NBC's shift of the "Tonight Show" to make room for Leno's return to late night. But that isn't the only option. O'Brien's team has been busy scouting other soundstages during the last two weeks.

In addition, O'Brien and his representatives have been organizing a swing through 30 cities, including Los Angeles, for his Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour. The tour intends to allow O'Brien to connect with his fans at a time when his breakup pact with NBC prevents him from appearing on television until September.

Conan O'Brien Plots A Movie Maneuver
By MIKE FLEMING; Deadline Hollywood

EXCLUSIVE: Here's the latest twist to the Conan O'Brien odyssey. Getting shoved out of his TV dream job as Tonight Show host is going to make him a movie star. I'm told that early talks are underway to give documentary feature treatment to O'Brien's 30-city live comedy/music revue, which is called "The Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour." Planning is just getting underway, but I've heard that Media Rights Capital has already had conversations about coming aboard as financier. Rodman Flender is in talks to direct.

Making a film doesn't violate the terms of O'Brien's split from NBC, which gave him directly a $33 million severance package to vacate the Tonight Show hosting chair and stay off the air until the fall. Reports  say he is getting close to signing a deal with Fox, one that could be announced as quickly as upfronts. But there might be other surprise moves for the chat host, so don't dress for the Fox launch just yet.,

O'Brien got the live show started as a way to help his staff of about 40 keep busy and employed. NBC gave up an extra $12 million for the staff. Considering that the staffers uprooted their families and pulled their kids out of schools in New York and moved them across the country -- only to see NBC end Conan's Tonight Show run after only seven months, they deserve whatever extra gig they can get until O'Brien resurfaces behind a desk for another network.

In New York, the tour hits Radio City Music Hall and Madison Square Garden in June, venues that sold out quickly. Hey, maybe Conan will return to Gotham when he lands the next job. Things were going great for him until he left.

NEW YORK — Late-night mainstay Conan O'Brien is headed to TBS to resume his comedic duties with a talk show expected to debut in November, the network says.

The program will air Mondays through Thursdays at 11 p.m. Eastern, shifting TBS' "Lopez Tonight," starring George Lopez, to midnight.

Monday's surprise announcement hit the same day O'Brien starts a two-month, nationwide comedy tour in Eugene, Ore., amid persistent reports that he was likely to claim Fox as his new late-night home.

Barring Fox, syndication was widely considered O'Brien's most likely option. Few if anyone mentioned TBS as a plausible destination.

O'Brien began serious talks with TBS just last week, the network said.

"In three months, I've gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I'm headed to basic cable," O'Brien said in a tongue-in-cheek-toned statement. "My plan is working perfectly."

O'Brien left NBC in January after hosting "The Tonight Show" for just eight months, as his ratings plunged from those of his longtime "Tonight" predecessor, Jay Leno, who reclaimed the hour. Until last June, O'Brien had followed Leno as host of "Late Night" since 1993.

OBrien's parting deal bars him from appearing on TV until September.

George Lopez called Conan personally to tell him to go to TBS and Lopez only stands to benefit with Conan as a lead in to his show. Yes, a bump to midnight now but Lopez Tonight only has modest ratings right now anyways.

It's great for Conan because TBS will let him go wild with his show. I originally said the best deal would be Comedy Central because of creative control, but TBS represents the same thing anyways.

great write-up.

i've never heard of TBS and i have a hard time differentiating between George Lopez and Carlos Mencia or any other latino comedians, i only know the dude from photos with Sandra Bullock where they say they're best friends or whatever.. that's nice i guess, oh and i'm latino so i'm not saying they all look alike but rather they are all equally boring...

however that article made sense of the whole thing and it sounds like Conan just did the smartest thing he's done since quitting the tonight show. and it was a smart move really, i think he's not stupid and he must have felt his soul depleting every night. whatever TBS is, i hope some network over here purchases the rights, we have a comedy channel that shows leno, colbert, stewart, kimmel, and letterman,.. so i guess that's where he'll end up!

TBS is one of the most popular cable channels in America. It used to be TNT's red headed step child, but it has emerged as the leading mainstream comedy network outside of Comedy Central.

really?  I have not had tv for about 10 years now, and the last I saw of TBS it contained very little original programming and showed mostly Bloodsport every other night.  Tell me more about the programs that are on TBS right now?  I thought F/X was the comedy channel with the new louis ck and it's always sunny.  someone fill me in!

but this also means it'll be much harder to see him since I don't think it's part of obama's digital cable.

FX has two better comedy shows, but TBS's tagline is now "Very Funny" with all programming being comedy sitcoms (like Friends, King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond, Seinfeld, Family Guy, The Office, Married with Children). Even when they show dramatic films on TV later at night, the preview commercials mock a part of the story to make you think it's comedy. Still, it's almost all comedy. They have tried their hand at a few original programming sitcoms. One by Tyler Perry seems to have life, but the other (My Boys) hasn't done much even though it has a new season this summer. George Lopez was their first major comedy venture to bring in a core audience young audience like Comedy Central has done with their original shows, but Conan O'Brien is what could push them over the edge.

During the daytime, I prefer TBS over Comedy Central because CC is showing bad old comedic films and at least TBS is showing middle of the road comedies which can be entertaining, but because of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, I am choosing CC's later night original programming. I think TBS is trying to sway that late night audience back over to them.

TBS has a lot of syndicated shows like Seinfeld, Friends and The Office, but in recent years started producing their own comedy shows like Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns and House of Payne, My Boys, and there are a few others starting now. They also broadcast the Comedy Festival from Vegas that always has Larry David, Seinfeld, etc...

Then they started with their Late Night Show with George Lopez. The good news for Conan is that he will be by far the biggest name they have and he will have a lot of power and influence to do whatever he wants.

Good move, Conando.

"In three months, I've gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I'm headed to basic cable," O'Brien said in a tongue-in-cheek-toned statement. "My plan is working perfectly." - Great quote

that conan quote is really pretty perfect. in addition to being the biggest name, he's also becoming an owner of his show. this could turn out to be financially comparable to a deal with fox, and it gives him real influence in regard to hiring/fairly compensating his staff/crew which has been important to him throughout the whole thing.  The issue on network TV was that he was attracting cable sized audiences. if TBS is basic cable, i bet ratings should actually be pretty good.

This seems like a perfect fit.  He'll be king over there.

So Lopez included Conan in his intro last night and had the old fake mouth thing to talk about Conan coming to TBS.

It's here (http://www.tbs.com/video/index.jsp?cid=185671) if you want to watch it, but it's miserably unfunny... lots of mugging.

In other news, the first live show wasn't that well received last night.  Hopefully it will get better... those tickets were expensive and hard to get.

i was scratching my head at first but this is probably the best thing that could've happened. apparently his deal with TBS was much larger than anything Fox was offering. the more i think about Fox the more it seemed that he would be doomed to repeat the same mistake he did at NBC. non stop pressure from the affiliates could've sunk that show.
Title: Re: Conan's the man!

another big piece of the deal: conan gets to OWN his show. so whatever the hell happens.. conan's company can make whatever dvds of it they want. and its his intellectual property, etc etc. and IN THEORY.. if he ever returned to The Tonight Show (won't happen), he could theoretically take the entire library of his TBS show with him to show clips of whatever he wanted.

again, that won't happen but the important thing is conan has the power to do whatever he wants now. so keep cool, ma babies.

if true, i think this is because the shows have been hyped up so much that the majority of tickets have been bought by meatheads expecting the tonight show, and they turn up and are disappointed to see THE REAL CONAN.

cos if anything the only good thing that came out of the tonight show debacle was conan finally became famous., the show ended up being nothing more than an advertisement for the conan brand and that's why we see such a swell in his fanbase after he quit. but it misrepresented his brand. unfortunately the numbers filled up with TONIGHT SHOW VIEWERS.

they might carry him over the dead zone until he gets his new show up and running but they will be sorely disappointed if they tune in expecting him to do more of his SO ZANY and SO WACKY OH LORDY bullshit studio tours or whatever he did at LA. i mean that was the worst of conan and that's what they loved, now they see him actually be funny and they hate it.

that's definitely what happened.

Well, that was earlier in the morning.  Hollywood Reporter wasn't too big on it (said it's pretty funny, but not THAT funny and sometimes boring).

Since I posted that, way more positive reviews came in and while it's hard to read them while trying to avoid spoilers, the general consensus was there are some early show kinks to work out, but overall it was good.

I'm pretty psyched.  I hope my seats are as good as they seem, I went second tier.

I miss when Conan reruns were on Comedy Central.  It fit really nicely by the Daily Show.  This was of course before the Colbert Report, but imagine that block.  If I were Comedy Central I would sack every episode of MadTV (which, for all I know probably gets outstanding ratings because of the time of day that it screens) and every other show, keeping the stand-up shows, maybe doubling those, bring back the SNL reruns, get Conan, have the Daily Show, Colbert and Futurama.

Reno 9/11 can stay.

And bring back Upright Citizen's Brigade, first and foremost.

And Kids In The Hall.

Man, it's like Comedy Central gets it right only occasionally.  If they really got their shit together, they could be a flawless channel.

comedy central blew it with chappelle and really hasn't recovered since.
about conan - you can tell how jon stewart starts taking more and more of the stuff that conan has established and works it into his show.  the most obvious comes from when he starts to laugh at the show's low budget quality more and more.  I mean, people in suits have always done ridiculous things, that's not new, but the tone that Conan has had going for him really got appropriated by jon stewart when daily show was running out of bush anger after '04.  I don't think it's a conscious appropriation but I do think the precedence of Conan makes it easier for the daily show audience to go for that type of tone and that brand of comedy.

Conan O'Brien to appear on '60 Minutes'
Exit deal barred host from TV appearances until May 1
Associated Press

Conan O'Brien will be on TV this weekend with his first post-"Tonight Show" interview.

O'Brien talks with Steve Kroft on "60 Minutes," CBS said Tuesday.

O'Brien's exit deal with NBC barred him from television appearances until May 1; the "60 Minutes" piece will air the day after.

The interview was conducted last week in Los Angeles, according to a person with knowledge of it. The person, who lacked authority to discuss the matter publicly, spoke on condition of anonymity.

O'Brien, who left "Tonight" in January over a time slot dispute with NBC, has agreed to host a late-night show on TBS later this year. He's now on a national comedy tour.

^pretty sure that's inaccurate.

he was cool beans for most of it. obviously 60mins wanted him to go off about the whole thing and say something scandalous but for the most part he just reiterated that he while he thinks the decision made against him was unfair he is not an angry or spiteful or vengegul kinda guy, so i don't think he's angry ANYMORE. he says he has no regrets about his decision and consistently expresses an optimistic outlook.

frankly i think he's purposely playing the whole debacle to his advantage about as far as is believable. he is not a victim, in the current economic climate for someone to be given millions of dollars, millions of new fans, and millions of more dollars to start a new show where he'll be the king of the network -- it's very hard to believe that this is a BAD DEAL. i think he realises this and kinda gets awkward when he spots himself playing into the hands of everyone, including this interviewer, who wanted him to play the whiny victim.

this fact is what makes any statement of "we got screwed" by leno even more unbelievable. he got everything he wanted.

i loved that moment where he had to crack up and say "how did leno get screwed exactly?" he's playing the situation perfectly, and i liked what he said about being on cable and how that's not such a bad thing, given the way things are going. i'm looking forward to the new show.

Conan O'Brien performs at TBS, TNT upfront
TBS show to debut Nov. 8; O'Brien feeds off net's enthusiasm
Source: Hollywood Reporter

NEW YORK -- A Conan O'Brien video followed by a stage appearance of the late-night comedy star opened the TBS and TNT upfront presentation here Wednesday.

Among other things, O'Brien joked that the plot of "Lost" is more plausible than what happened to him at NBC and sang "On the road again" with lyrics soon changed to say "(I want) My own show again."

The O'Brien video package started off with a black screen and the words "One month ago."

Then the comic was shown lying on the floor surrounded by pizza and beer, with a half-eaten pizza slice on his belly.

The phone rang, and O'Brien picked up. "Hello, job!?...No, there is no Debbie here."

Once he got up, he revealed a big belly and an empty mailbox.

Music starts playing, and it is "All by myself."

We then see O'Brien jumping on a trampoline in his garden.

Back indoors, a young lady comes up to him and calls for her mom, while O'Brien lets his dog eat peanut butter off his toes.

Another phone call, and O'Brien answers: "Debbie's is not here...my own talk show on TBS? Yes, I'll do it... Am I in shape? Yes, I am."

As faster music starts playing, we see him cutting his beard, working out, taking off his fat suit and even shooting a machine gun.

The video, which a Turner representative says the comic has used on his current tour, ends with O'Brien telling the camera: "I'm ready, let's do this!"

Seconds later, O"Brien walked onto the stage to huge applause.

His opening lines: "Please sit!" and "I love to do comedy at 10 in the morning."

"I realized this morning this is my first time back in New York City since I was here exactly one year ago for the NBC upfront" -- to promote his 25 year run as head of the "Tonight Show," he quipped.

If anyone knows "what the hell happened four months ago," O'Brien said he'd be in the lobby later. "The plot to 'Lost' is more plausible."

He referenced the whirlwind past year and joked he even briefly served in an undersecretary post in the Obama administration before resigning in scandal and had his own religious cult in Nova Scotia.

After some jokes about his beard, he talked about how he met Turner Entertainment Networks boss Steve Koonin.

"When I met Steve Koonin on J-Date, we clicked instantly," he said, also quipping about their "raw sexual enthusiasm."

On a more serious note, the deal was "nothing short of exhilarating" for him.

"I can't wait to go back to having fun on television."

He also said he is learning much on his live tour.

O'Brien then said he is excited to go back to TV though and lauded basic cable. "I don't want to live in a country with less than six ESPNs," he joked.

His vision for his TBS show?

Corny jokes and country music, which attract young male demos, O'Brien deadpanned.

"Steve, thanks for the blank creative check...you fool!," he then said to Koonin.

He finished his stage appearance with a rendition of "On The Road Again" that soon turned the lyrics to "My Own Show Again."

Among various lines, O'Brien sang that he wants his own show again even if it is at 10pm or on women's network Oxygen, for which he would be willing to get a sex change. And he quipped that he wants a show again, so he can interview Megan Fox again.

Big applause followed O'Brien off the stage.

Koonin later also referenced O'Brien in joking that he needed to thank an NBC employee for two great programming additions: O'Brien (Jay Leno's photo came up on a screen behind him right then) and "Southland."

George Lopez in his appearance later also talked about O'Brien. He said he feels his late-night move that will see him start work an hour later and still get the same pay is a Latino's dream come true.

And in an "I Love Lucy" reference, he said that decades ago, a redhead and a Latino made TV history. "This fall, Coco and Loco will do it again," Lopez told the upfront crowd.

O'Brien also made a brief appearance at the Turner upfront press lunch at Del Posto mid-day and was soon surrounded by reporters.

While he didn't have any specifics to share about his plans for his TBS show, he said his current tour and this year's experiences will surely influence it. "You have to evolve," he said.

"I feed off enthusiasm, and these guys are extremely enthusiastic," he said about new employer TBS.

Discussing his tour, he said he is much more out of the TV and ratings loop than ever. "You become an idiot," he told reporters. "You never know what day it is."

But O"Brien said he likes the flexibility to ad-lib and do even more spontaneuous material on tour, as well as tailor parts of his act to whatever city he plays in.

And "I signed my first breast recently," he said. "It was a guy."

Will Andy Richter be back on the show? "How do you get rid of the guy," he said.

"Let's move on now," he summarized his feelings when asked about his tumultuous NBC departure.

After a few minutes of chatting with the press, Koonin helped whisk him away, saying O'Brien's manager had promised the comic for an hour, but Koonin had in turn promised to get him out in time.

Internet love Conan because he's a geek who is self-aware and ironic, two humor genres that are very popular with the youth. The funniest thing about Conan is Norm McDonald really.

Kilmore (was that his name?) was often funnier than him when they were at the same time.

i have hope for conan still but this new promo where he drives a car off a cliff (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSFbf0f4Ch8) and it explodes is too much of a throwback to the lowest-common-denominator humour that made his Leno year so unwatchable.
Title: Re: Conan's the man!
Post by: Fernando on October 14, 2010, 09:50:38 AM
yeah, its like he's trying too hard to be wacky outrageous conan, his leno period was fine only for the fist week, then as you say it was unwatchable, last time he was funny was when he didn't have writers, that period was great, he did stupid dumb shit that came natural and funny, now his wackiness seems forced, its like someone or $omething took over his wacky brain. I blame the millions he made with TTS.

I have to disagree.  I feel like it's more that his attitude while he's doing it is oldschool.  Everything I watched during his Leno-days he seemed scared that the was going to annoy somebody and had to force having fun.

I feel like this is just him being silly again.

i'll take over for the graveyard shift..

currently 4 dudes and a guy in a dog costume are playing poker.

one of them looks like lance bass/stephen baldwin and another like albert brooks. and the other two are wearing a hat and sunglasses indoors.

EDIT: the game finished and everyone's left, the lights are mostly off except for a discoball. a cleaning lady comes to the stairway to clean up some of the mess left over from the game and some self righteous chick coming down the stairs attempts to have a conversation with her but shit gets AWKWARD when the 40-something hard working cleaning lady either can't speak english or has no interest in talking with some 20-something hipster douchette, anyway the chick awkwardly i mean EXTREMELY awkwardly ends her interaction (like, "ok... uh... bye!" does a weird arm gesture and leaves). haha. that'll teach her to patronize people outside her class.

EDIT 2: there's a guy straight out of jersey shore that thinks he's running the show. he is the biggest douche on the internet right now.

Everything before the interviews was good to great.  The interviews themselves were meh.  Tom Hanks is on tonight, and he's usually funny on Conan.  I'm waiting for him to get back to the sketches.

It was funny. Conan is going to over use the basic cable joke soon, but it also was good to have Conan back on air. It took one episode to show Conan will be more daring here than with his version of The Tonight Show.

Really good Bill Simmons podcast on current and past Late Night Wars. Lots of insight by Late Shift author. He penned a new insider's perspective on the Conan fallout for the Late Night world.

Uhm, you should listen to more. It's pretty objective and the further the interview goes in, the more rounded it becomes with criticizing everyone in fair ways. The guy admits his personal feelings by saying David Letterman is the best talent and he likes Conan. Talent wise, Jay Leno comes off as the worst of the hosts for him as far as talent goes. He just doesn't see much blame for Leno in the Conan upheaval. That's why it sounds nicer at the beginning, but by the end, you leave with different impressions for sure.

I've got to say, Conan, these days, is still the man.  And even Andy is getting his fair share of barbs in.  The two really do fit.  There was the bit a few weeks ago where Andy tried to get himself a sidekick.  And now, with Will Ferrell hijacking Tina Fey's "clip" and then coming on the show to shave Conan's beard off, helping coin the phrase beardpocalypse.  It was all so very delicious and slightly poignant considering its inception.  Let's just hope that now his beard is gone the funny won't have gone with it.

I don't watch every episode the way I did with Late Night. I watch when certain guests are on, but the sketches are not funny enough to warrant me watching every episode, and it looks like they don't have the budget to do remotes anymore.
Title: Re: Conan's the man!
Post by: diggler on May 12, 2011, 01:41:17 PM
The problem with the remotes is that since he's not in New York anymore so he can't just stroll outside and find funny things to shoot. I do think the TBS show is much better than the Tonight Show and captures more of his spirit but I really miss Conan in NYC.

Andy has been great. Everyone seems looser and more relaxed.

TBS said Conan O'Brien will take his show on the road for the first time with a week-long visit to New York in late 2011, followed by a trip to Chicago in 2012. O'Brien is taking his late-night talk show Conan on the road for the first time -with a visit to the Beacon Theater in New York Oct. 31-Nov. 3 that will celebrate the first anniversary of his arrival at TBS. It will be his first stint in New York since he hosted Late Night with Conan O'Brien.

Here's a Conan remote that's reminiscent of the good ol' days: http://teamcoco.com/video/conan-drives-staffers-to-work  Also, Hanks was on, and his story about Buckingham Palace killed (as, let's face it, Hanks is wont to do).  http://teamcoco.com/video/tom-hanks-embarrasses-self-at-buckingham-palace

There was a commercial for Conan on Turner Classic Movies introducing some of his favorites, but I couldn't quite suss out when he was actually going to appear.  Sometime Monday night?

Oh, and from earlier this week, it seems as if Leslie Bibb has been hanging out a little bit too much with Barry Egan, if y'know what I mean: http://teamcoco.com/video/leslie-bibb-cute-destroy

How the mighty have fallen.  Haven't watched in like 4 months, which isn't nearly as long as some of you.  I tuned in to see him making jokes about Edward Snowden and not about, well, everyone else in the free world who's trying to railroad this hero.

Shut up, Conan.

There.  I said it.

I get that he's not supposed to be the most political figure, but surely he must know better.

Ugh.  Sharon Osbourne is on.  Rage.  Fast forward.  Quick.

Conan was once the GOAT. Early 2000s late night was a golden age. It will be nice to reminisce.  Even just skimming the reddit thread about this, and sheer mentions of all the great sketches and bits over the years, brought a smile to my face.
