Title: Super Bowl ads
Post by: MacGuffin on January 21, 2003, 10:31:18 AM
Even if you're not a football fan you still have a reason to watch the Bucs and the Raiders square off in the Super Bowl this Sunday. THE HULK. That's right the big, green monster will get his unveiling in a 30-second spot to air during the game. In addition to the well-publicized and highly anticipated HULK ad, there are a few others to look out for. WB has the longest ad around with a 60-second commercial for their MATRIX films. WB will also include a new look at TERMINATOR 3 in a new ad. Disney will look to push their upcoming Colin Farrell/Al Pacino thriller THE RECRUIT. Sony will run three spots, only the first of which, CHARLIE'S ANGELS 2, is confirmed. The second two are expected to be either BAD BOYS 2, ANGER MANAGEMENT, GIGLI or DADDY DAY CARE. Fox has purchased one spot but following their policy to not discuss marketing strategies, it is unclear whether it will be for X2 or DAREDEVIL. New Line, Paramount, DreamWorks and MGM will sit out the Super Bowl this time around.

Although, not a Superbowl ad, I really like the Nike Streaker ad.

I hate that they do this... I hate professional football and have absolutely no intrest in watching the game... now they're rolling out all these good commercials that they won't play after the SB has aired.

I wonder if they'll actually show the Hulk and not just Banna looking at himself in the mirror.

It's supposed to be the first real look at the Hulk, not like the teaser poster below, but a clearer view; that's why all the hype.

Macguffin, how is it that you know where every single picture of everything is and are able to post it before anybody else? About Hulk, I was expecting something different, I am dissapointed and dont get me started on CGI.

Over at AICN, a recap of the Super Bowl ad for The Hulk that was quickly online before Universal took it down. If you want to be surprised on Sunday... *Beware: SPOILERS*

"I don't know who I am. I don't know what... I'm becoming. But I know one thing for sure. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry."

This is played over a few shots of Eric Bana gettin' all tense and freaky, with Jennifer Connelly trying to calm him down. We see him at a microscope, then we see some DNA in close-up, and then Bana gripped by the agony of transformation. There's a quick flash of the outline of something huge and green and... well... hulking... and then that same close up of the eye in mid-transition that we saw in the teaser trailer.

"On June 20th," a title card reads, followed by shots of the Hulk leaping through the wall of a lab and turning around for a quick shot of his face. Then helicopters! And soldiers piling out of trucks! And The Hulk destroying a house! And Nick Nolte lookin' freshly date-raped! And more soldiers! And San Francisco! And Connelly hugging Bana in the streets... AND HE'S WEARING PURPLE PANTS!!

Nolte facing down The Hulk, looking totally piss-scared. The Hulk flipping a tank over onto its side. Something coming through from underneath a San Francisco street and toppling a trolley. Any shot involving The Hulk leaping.

And, oh, yeah... the one where he picks a tank up by the gun barrel, spins around in a circle, and tosses it. That's pretty much as cool as it gets.

The last two shots are a great close-up of his face, which is actually pretty impressive work, and then what looks like part of a dream sequence as The Hulk lunges out of a mirror to grab Banner.

Gee, thanks Mac.

I really don't like American Football at all, but I had the game running in the background, so I could occasionally catch commercials, but I missed these two (the ones I caught kinda sucked).

That Matrix teaser looks great.  I really hope these two movies are as good as the first.

Hulk teaser didn't do much for me. It makes me wonder if Ang Lee will have any imagination besides Hulk just destroying things when the movie comes out.

Matrix teaser was nice as I see it is upping the special effects of the last. Though, that really isn't the most revolutionary news at all. But I kept getting bothered by some special effects during some fighting scenes that reaked of computer animation in every bad way, like the Charlie Angels special effects.

The main thing for me was still the game. I was rooting for Tampa because I am a fan of Gruden and glad to see him have won against his old team when he was traded (dismissed) in such an unlikely fashion. Also, I wouldn't have minded Oakland winning because it would have been nice for Rice, who could have shown this an example to San Francisco that he has some worth as a player when promptly told by them he doesn't. Still, I didn't want anyone to win and it ended up mainly being a blow out to where during second half, I turned it off.

And there you have it folks, it's a thumbs down for the superbowl from GT.  So, better luck next time NFL, maybe he'll like the sequel more.

None of the commercials really interested me. I liked the one of Michael Jordan playing himself from 18 years earlier but thats about it. I wasnt surprised that Tampa won, but I was surprised by how dominant that defense was. I wanted Oakland to win because Im from the Bay Area and would have liked to see Rice and Brown win, but if any other team had to win, Id want it to be Tampa.
