Title: I Love a Photography
Post by: I Love a Magician on December 08, 2005, 02:16:22 AM
Now, I know I just registered and that I'm using my fourth post to show some pictures I've taken, but I swear I didn't register just to do this. With that out of the way.

These are some pictures I've taken over the last couple of years. I have the same border and my name on all of them because I'm planning to start some sort of shitty personal page and put these on there.

Black and white:

your color pictures are great to look at.  the colors were very easy on the eyes.

i preferred the bw ones. you have a very good eye. do you digitally manipulate these at all or are these darkroom prints or what?

Like matt35mm, I only have access to those one hour places. I use a film camera and all that, then have them put the pictures on a CD. Usually all I do is mess with the contrast and crop them in Photoshop. Thanks for the replies.

Yeah, I've had photos put to cd before at a one hour place. I noticed that between the physical copy and the digital ones, the digital contrast was upped like crazy, but you were able to see things in pictures you couldn't before.

Great pictures, the colored ones were excellent.

I took one while a sophomore in high school, but I didn't learn too much because I didn't give a shit at that point. Took another one here at the ol' community college but didn't learn too much because it was even less advanced than the high school class I'd had. I think I've learned more about photography (at least the composition part) from just watching movies and looking and photographs on the internet.

I use this Canon Rebel GII that my mom bought me for Christmas a couple years back. A couple of those black and white pictures were taken with a friend's camera, but I have no idea what kind of camera that was. The film is just regular Kodak 35MM. 200, 400, or 800 depending on where I plan on taking the pictures.

maybe they think lines are good? you've done well in avoiding the most common pitfall among young photographers: take a picture of a bunch of lines and present it as great composition.

the rest of your pics are awesome except the concert ones, which just sort of fizzle.

well they're lacking the ebullience of the others, innit? instead of creating drama within the picture you hav settled for merely photographing the appearance of it.

not feelin the long shot of the nesquik guy at the intersection, he looks better without glasses and/or looking off to the right -- his two partnerships with cowboy hat are most revealing. the last one is also disjointed, i like that nesquik guy is writing (i'd like to see more of that) but i'm mostly drawn to smoker, and nesquik guy draws away from that.. maybe even literally if that's what he was doin. the rest are brilliant as usual.

For the most part, gorgeous shots.

I haven't taken a color class yet so I can't really comment on how well it's done here, but your monochrome shots are maybe a tad too contrasty for me. The important thing is that for the most part you make it work, especially for something like the old man's arm where the wrinkles are puncuated by the sharp lines created by the contrast, but in general you want a lot of tones in the grays because that's where the detail is. You can easily lose information in heavy blacks and whites. Just something to watch out for. Also, I would encourage you to move past band shots and old men - they're just so easy, and consequently overdone (not that your shots are bad). But that comes with some exploration, and your photos are stronger than a lot of what's out there so I feel pretty confident that you'll find what you want to photograph and that you'll do it well. Look into Ryan McGinley, Roy deCarava, Nan Goldin, and maybe William Eggleston.

Just out of curiosity, now that you're a photo major, what are you thinking you might want to do with it? Oh, and do you auto-expose/focus or do you do it all manually?
Title: Re: I Love a Photography
Post by: I Love a Magician on October 24, 2007, 05:48:02 PM
thanks for the feedback, dude. i'll check out those photographers.

i'm a photojournalism major at western kentucky university, so i'm gonna try to get an internship next summer. if i can't, i'm gonna try to get a solid job working at a studio in either louisville or nashville. after next semester the classes get really heavy on the journalism, which isn't really what i want to do. wku has maybe the best photojournalism program around, but i have no desire for that type thing. i'd much rather just work somewhere doing senior pictures and shit like that. i don't have much ambition.

but if i get a decent internship and it looks like i can actually take the photojournalism somewhere i'll probably stick with it and try to do a lot of new media stuff, which excites me more.

thanks again for the critique.

I Love a Good Layout

you are the only person here who is taking real photos. they don't even need captions to bring out the story.

in layout three there's a small picture on the left side between the columns of text, with a dude on the floor in the BG and a foot on the edge of the floor in the FG. that's just brilliant man. the dude's out of focus and the pic is tiny, but that's all you need. it must be tough deciding which to blow up and which to use as "punctuation" but you chose them well.

i still think your all-american hero sitting against the post in the endzone deserves some kind of prize. that shows real promise. it's iconic. a good "on location" photographer is someone on whom the fates have smiled upon by presenting them with an exemplary image of the times, for the rest of times. if you went to a war zone now, you might capture the Flags of Our Grandchildren.

there's more to say about body language and why wrestling, or in kubrick's case boxing, is so photographically potent. it's the antithesis of geometric lines and meaningless rows of trees, it's movement and motivation and conflict in action and in vision. and that's all i got to say.

These wrestling pics remind me of Collier Schorr's work. She photographed young wrestlers for one series, always highlighting the contrast between posed shots for the camera and active wrestling, subsequently pointing out the staged masculinity of athletes. I think you'd dig it, despite your preference for b&w and more photojournalistic influences. Here's a google image search:

I'm still not a fan of your contrast, but I gotta say, the first one's mighty nice. What I like most, maybe, is that you have one whole half of his face completely covered in shadow, which normally wouldn't work for me, but the backdrop was lit so that his face doesn't appear to materialize out of the background (from what I've seen, a pretty common mistake when using a black or dark backdrop), but rather is still outlined against it.

As always, really dramatic and punchy.

Wow, and didn't you say you thought you would just stick with old men around where you live?

It's fashiony (or I can only assume such since you haven't talked about it) and the sunset/glare is kind of lame in theory, this definitely shows some technical mastery. Seriously, good use of a flash/lighting set-up. When I first started using artificial lighting I tended to use too much, which flattened the image and made everything unnaturally even... good to keep it seemingly from one direction and kind of soft. There's one of those buzzwords that applies to this image, "sculptural", which basically means your image makes it look like it actually exists (as opposed to being just a flat surface). Impressive stuff, man.

I actually have a lot more fun with totally staged photography rather than photojournalistic photography. How do you feel about it?

Title: Re: I Love a Photography
Post by: I Love a Magician on May 06, 2008, 04:13:20 PM
thanks dude. this was one of the pictures i used for my final portfolio in lighting class. i got the idea (taking the sky orange and all that) while i was failing horribly at my fashion assignment. through this lighting class i've really started to like fashion type stuff and just portraits in general.

i had that same problem of overlighting stuff as well when i started using lights. i'd take a picture and be like, "well there's a shadow here by the nose" and just flatten the fuck out of it. i try not to do that now because it suffocates the picture of any depth it might have. i've been trying lately to do more natural looking light (unless it's like the last picture i posted which is obviously set up with lights and all) and give stuff an almost ambient look. here's an example of something i did like that:

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi5.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy174%2Fthreecrookedhearts%2Fportraits%2Flesley_fashion1_small.jpg&hash=36014f0233a8f3383f91a38a5c4323e5582a5cdd)

it's not a really "wow" type thing but i like it. when i do a more lit picture like the sunset thing i like to go more over the top with it.

but i definitely have a better time with this staged type photography. i like not having the worry about disrupting the moment or whatever. just get an idea and do it.

do you have any photo sites you think i should check out?

edit: thanks matt

sort of, but mostly just to say, "can you move your chair up a foot or two" or "turn your body this way" but that was just for technical reasons because i was using a flash. didn't really tell them "how" to look or anything. took them near my hometown in hartford, ky.
