Not to point out the obvious, but the Grammys seem to be a bigger joke than the Oscars... This year is especially terrible.
By ANTHONY BREZNICAN
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Producer-turned-rapper Kanye West collected a leading 10 Grammy nominations Tuesday, including album of the year, for his innovative debut, "The College Dropout."
West's disc stood out in the rap landscape because of its atypical prose. It avoided the usual plotlines about sex, money and violence and touched on everything from religion to his own insecurities.
The performer, who isn't afraid to sing his own praises after claiming he was "definitely robbed" when he picked up no trophies at the American Music Awards, also had a nomination for best new artist and shared a songwriting bid for song of the year with his hit "Jesus Walks."
"Ten nominations, that's amazing," said West, a nominations presenter at the Music Box Theatre in Hollywood. "That's like a perfect score. I'm at a loss for words."
Usher and Alicia Keys, who collaborated on the hit "My Boo," followed West with eight nominations each, including album of the year for Keys'"The Diary of Alicia Keys" and Usher's "Confessions."
Ray Charles, whose posthumous duets album "Genius Loves Company," became the biggest selling album of his long career, had seven nominations including album of the year and record of the year for "Here We Go Again," sung with Norah Jones.
Green Day garnered six bids for its hard-driving rock-punk album "American Idiot" which satirized culture, politics and apathy. The group was nominated for record of the year and best rock song for the title track and best rock album.
Besides Charles' and Jones'"Here We Go Again" and Green Day's "American Idiot," other record of the year contenders were the mellow love song "Heaven" by Los Lonely Boys, the jumpy party song "Let's Get It Started" by the Black Eyed Peas and Usher's massive hit "Yeah!"
The best new artist class spanned soul, rap, country and pop, with nominees Gretchen Wilson, country's self-proclaimed "Redneck Woman," rapper West, young soul sensation Joss Stone, Los Lonely Boys and Maroon 5.
Bids for song of the year - which goes to songwriters - went to "Daughters," written and recorded by John Mayer, "If I Ain't Got You," written and recorded by Keys, "Jesus Walks," recorded by West, "Live Like You Were Dying," recorded by Tim McGraw, and "The Reason," recorded by Hoobastank.
"It hasn't sunk in yet," said Hoobastank singer Doug Robb. "I feel like I'm in a daydream."
Old-school performers filled the best R&B album category with Anita Baker's "My Everything," Al Green's "I Can't Stop," and Prince's comeback "Musicology" competing against "The Diary of Alicia Keys" and Jill Scott's "Beautifully Human: Words & Sound Vol. 2."
Loretta Lynn had five nominations in the country field including best country album for "Van Lear Rose" (which was produced by the White Stripes' Jack White) and two bids for best country song for "Miss Being Mrs." and "Portland Oregon."
Her album competition includes McGraw for "Live Like You Were Dying," Tift Merritt for "Tambourine," Keith Urban's "Be Here" and Wilson for "Here for the Party."
Half of West's 10 nominations were in the rap field, including best rap album. He competes against himself in the best rap-sung collaboration with the songs "Slow Jamz," performed along with Twista and actor-singer Jamie Foxx, and "All Falls Down," which he performed with Syleena Johnson.
Also nominated for best rap album were Nelly's "Suit," LL Cool J's "The Definition," The Beastie Boys'"To The 5 Boroughs," and "The Black Album" by Jay-Z, which he has said will be his last.
In the rock category, Green Day's "American Idiot" was named in the best rock album competition along with Hoobastank's "The Reason," The Killers'"Hot Fuss," Velvet Revolver's "Contraband" and "The Deliveryman" by Elvis Costello & The Imposters.
Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson's long-gestating album "Smile," which was recently released after years spent on the shelf following his emotional and mental problems, collected a bid for best pop vocal album. It competes with "Afterglow" by Sarah McLachlan, "Feels Like Home" by Jones, "Mind, Body & Soul" by Stone, and "Genius Loves Company" by Charles.
Jones and Stone compete against each other again for female pop vocal performance, with Stone's "You Had Me" and Jones'"Sunrise" up against "Oceania" by Bjork, No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani's solo single "What You Waiting For?" and Sheryl Crow's cover of the Cat Stevens song "The First Cut is the Deepest."
In the male pop vocal competition, Costello's cover of the Cole Porter song "Let's Misbehave" from the movie "De-Lovely" was picked along with the inspirational song "You Raise Me Up" by Josh Groban, John Mayer's "Daughters," Prince's "Cinnamon Girl" and Seal's "Love's Divine."
Posthumous was the operative word in the best pop collaboration with vocals category. Charles competes against himself with the duets "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" with Elton John and "Here We Go Again" with Jones. Also nominated was a cover of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" by Johnny Cash and The Clash's Joe Strummer, both deceased. The other two bids went to veterans: Stevie Wonder and Take 6 for "Moon River," and Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton for "Something" from the album "Concert for George," a tribute to the late George Harrison.
The Grammys will be given out Feb. 13 in Los Angeles during a broadcast on CBS

alicia keys and alicia keys and jaime foxx were both excellent performances.
I heard a clip on NPR this morning of Loretta Lynn and Jack White accepting for "Van Lear Rose" (cool abum, BTW)... it was funny hearing White, who's usually so in-control of any public appearance, barely able to keep up with Lynn, who's been on stages longer than White's been alive. :yabbse-grin:

It was worth watching, if only for the "still outstanding in his field" joke and the Green Day performance.
The grammys are a joke and a shill for hip pop. Didnt outlkast win album of the year last year for that horrid album they dropped?
I kept making fun of all my friends who watched.
"I hear Nirvana was a no-show this year." "Dude, Nirvana broke up a long time ago." "No way, they had an album out in November." "No, uh, their singer shot himself." "Oh, that sucks. But their guitarist's still awesome." "The singer and the guitarist's the same guy." "Huh. You sure?" "Yeah.."
Seriously though, Stevie Wonder showed up?
Quote from: GingerSeriously though, Stevie Wonder showed up?
Yes, and he even did a blind joke.
Cool. I'm hearing from friends now that he pretended to read an envelope and then read it with braille?

Yeah, I am.
the grammys are lamer than fdr's legs.....too soon?
anyway, all award shows are ridiculous nowadays, I can barely stand watching them because there's always some idiot in the balcony screaming "I LOVE YOU ANDRE!" and "WILL YOU MARRY ME?"
are the rumours about the stevie wonder joke true?

I'm glad U2 won. Didn't expect them to grab all of them, but How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb was more noteworthy than All That You Can't Leave Behind. Its really their best album since Achtung Baby.
But, I'm also a lifelong U2 fan. A certain bias creeps in.

Am I getting crotchety, or is music sucking more and more each passing year?
Grammy nods always suck.
They follow a formula for album of the year every year.
Slot 1 for mainstream, yet safe rap album of the year.
Slot 2 for slot for hipster approved Indie band for credibility's sake.
Slot 3 for safe black R & B artist.
Slot 4 for aging artist(s) making a comeback,
Slot 5 is the wildcard, but is usually reserved for new band/artist on the scene, sometimes they give it to the most popular rock album of the year.
They pick the winner out of a hat.
Formulaic yes, but better than last year. I was happy to see In Rainbows represented. Nas and the Roots made better rap records than Weezy, but at least Greenwood got recognition from someone for twbb.
I don't get the Grammys. It's not that I think X or Y choice sucks, it's the whole selection I don't get. The nominees are good and everything, it just seems so low rent. almost worthless. Its like they're a bunch of parents who ask their 14 yo daughter : ''so which singer you like now ?''............. no it's not even that
it's more random than that

Grammys sign up Lil Wayne, Thom Yorke for new campaign
Lil Wayne, Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Lenny Kravitz, Stevie Wonder and Rihanna have signed on for a massive Recording Academy ad campaign. Television, print, online and radio spots will try to drum up some excitement for the organization's annual Grammy awards, which suffered a decline in ratings last year.
A television ad with Wonder's "Superstitious" -- and lyrical references to such R&B and soul artists as Ray Charles and Stephanie Mills -- debuted over the weekend on CBS. Ad spots with Rihanna and Yorke will roll out in the days leading up the Feb. 8 telecast.
A Grammy spokeswoman says each artist was asked to give the Recording Academy 10-20 songs that influenced or affected their life and career. The lyrics and song titles are then featured in the print and television ads.
One nicely odd effect is that the advertisements for the industry awards now feature a host of artists and songs that had not been recognized by the Grammys. The Yorke ad is at left, and contains references to such experimental and challenging artists as Scott Walker ("Psoriatic") and the Liars ("The Wrong Coat for You Mt. Heart Attack"). One of the biggest references in Yorke's ad goes to largely unknown electronic act Modeselektor, whose "Kill Bill Vol. 4" is inscribed into the forehead of the Radiohead singer.
The print ads from Lil Wayne and Rihanna come with more popular nods. Lil Wayne's ad pays tribute to Jay-Z's "Can't Knock the Hustle" and Young Buck's "Pocket Full of Paper," for instance. The most notable presence on the Rihanna ad is Destiny's Child's "Say My Name."
The print component will also continue to expand in the run-up to the awards. A Grammy spokeswoman says spots with Coldplay and Kanye West are in development.
The Lil Wayne ad comes with this bit of fine print: "Artist not guaranteed to perform." However, it would be rare for an artist nominated for album of the year -- Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III" and Radiohead's "In Rainbows" are both up for the top prize -- to not perform at the Grammy ceremony, which will be held at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.
The ads were developed by TBWA\Chiat\Day, and are said to be part of the biggest campaign in the Recording Academy's history, one that cost in the multimillions, according to Billboard. The promotion, dubbed "music makes us," is coming one year after the Grammys suffered their lowest ratings since 1992. More recently, a prime-time Grammy special announcing this year's nominations didn't fare too well in the ratings, finishing in fourth place for its time slot.

Hilarious.....but stefen is probably right on the money here. And thats why I don't watch the Grammy's. At least the oscars have ocassional funny moments with comedians hosting. (Unfortunately not this year. Hugh jackman should do less comic book and romantic comedy bullshit. Along with kate hudson. Kate, do something more constructive with your career, you haven't done anything of note since Almost Famous. Your talented, stop slumming with Matthew McCaunahey and Dane Cook.)
If I want to watch rappers thanking God and their Mom for where they are today, I'll listen to some 2 pac knock off rapper from the mid-ninties. Yeah, I know I'm harsh.
Radiohead expected to perform at Grammy Awards
Expect Radiohead to be announced Monday morning as one of the performing acts on the Feb. 8 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, joining the likes of Katy Perry, Lil Wayne, Carrie Underwood and fellow Brits Coldplay. Radiohead, who are nominated for album of the year for "In Rainbows," have been quite the Grammy boosters in 2009, with singer Thom Yorke appearing in a television and print ad campaign to hype the Recording Academy-hosted gala.
Indie-focused website Pitchfork reported the news Sunday evening, and the Recording Academy is expected to announce more performing artists early Monday morning. A Grammy spokeswoman did not comment on the Pitchfork report. With Radiohead in, all but two of the album of the year candidates will be on board for the telecast.
It's rare that an artist up for the top prize would not make some sort of live music appearance on the Grammy telecast. However, that's precisely what's happened with Radiohead in the past. The act has been nominated for album of the year twice -- for "OK Computer" and "Kid A" -- but did not perform in either year.
"In Rainbows" will compete for album of the year with Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter III," Coldplay's "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends," Ne-Yo's "Year of the Gentleman" and "Raising Sand" from Robert Plant & Alison Krauss.
The face of Radiohead frontman Yorke can be seen in a Grammy television ad, in which the singer discusses some of his favorite songs -- many of them never nominated for a Grammy. Yorke's ad highlights such adventurous artists as Scott Walker, Bjork and Modeselektor, among others.
The print ad was earlier posted on this blog, although Idolator noted that some changes have been made to the ad since it was first revealed on Pop & Hiss. For instance, references to Walker and Autechre have been shrunk to make way for the Rolling Stones and David Bowie. A Grammy spokeswoman says the changes were made to reflect the artists Yorke discusses in the television spot, and no acts were removed from the original advertisement -- only made smaller.
I'm watching now.
The Day The Music Died - February 3, 1959 when Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper perished in a plane crash? No, it was today when some asshole decided Jonas Brothers and Stevie Wonder would make for a great performance.
Radiohead, playing 15 Step with the USC marching band, was the only highlight:

I thought it was a great show. They really changed their style and made it more modern. I enjoyed it a lot. That performance of Swagger Like Us with M.I.A., T.I, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne was awesome.
I'm glad I watched. I'll probably watch next year, too, if they keep this same format.

ol' Dino must've been rolling over in his grave for being linked to this.
during Radiohead, how many ppl you think were saying 'wow, that gay kid from American Idol got strange?'
Was that even Radiohead? It was just Thom and Jonny. I was disappointed in their performance. It was very boring by their standards. It was the whole reason I watched. At least they didn't play House of Cards. My dream would have been National Anthem. Grammys ain't ready for something like that.
