Title: Who's a musician?
Post by: Gamblour. on September 11, 2005, 10:44:56 PM
Who here's a musician? What do you play? How long?

I've played drums for 8 years, bass for 6, guitar for 2. I was in band throughout middle/high school and know a good bit about drum corps and classical and theory. Not too much though.

It's a basic question, and I couldn't find any topics about it.

I've played guitar for about eleven years, and play (with varying degrees of ineptitude) bass, piano, mandolin, sitar, and harmonica.  I'm like Beck, minus all the extra talent.

i played the guitar but it all ended tragically at a contest in front of my mom. i think my problem was that i started too old.

I've been playing bass for 2 years, but didn't really apply myself the first year... So just one year on that, I would say.  I like making techno... not just pasting loops, but dissecting them, restructuring the beats... making it more complicated.

I don't really call myself a musician because I know I'm not that talented, but I make tunes that I enjoy listening to.

I also played trumpet for 4 years.

I used to play viola when I was younger, and am just now starting to learn how to play piano.

I'm learning the guitar.  And I sing.

It'll be a while before I become a musician, but I absolutely intend on becoming one in the near future.

Wow I knew there would be musicians on here, no one ever really talks about it.

I think I've got a good gift for listening to something and then figuring it out immediately, I don't even need to have the song playing, I can hear the notes in my head. But I'm not very good at guitar, I'm trying to get a lot better, but I've sort of plateaued. I too want to be a musician. Really, I just want to sing and play at the same time. I'm working my ass off on Across the Universe, but that shit's hard.

I took a class on piano at school here. But that's as much as I can say. I can navigate it.

Check out the "Art Gallery" section; a few people (including myself) have their music posted in there.

Quote from: GamblourReally, I just want to sing and play at the same time.

When you're starting out, try it with songs with very simple rhythms (for me it was Nirvana songs).  "Across the Universe" is actually a pretty good one for that, disregarding the intro guitar part.  Ultimately you get to the point where you can focus primarily on singing, and your hands know what to do on their own.

Piano. Sort of. I have my good days. I have the same trouble, though, of playing and singing at the same time, unless the timing is exactly the same on both.

I tried learning guitar several times and never quite made it. Bass too. I can still pick either up and pluck or strum random bits of simplicity, but I can't play them.

I can't play the drums for the life of me, and this extends to maintaining rhythm when I play the piano. It feels right when I play it, but when I listen to it it starts drifting. I have very little inner syncopation.

I played the drums for about 6 years but havent played for about 6 again. Took up the piano two years ago and the drumming really helped there as far as reading the music and the coordination of the left and the right in complex pieces. Everynow and again I'll condition myself to play another segment of the maple leaf rag, I'm about 2/3 through it now and it has never stopped being enjoyable to play.

What is the maple leaf rag, redlum?

Its one of Scott Joplins best rags. Theres a sample here: http://www.sheetmusicdirect.us/search/productDetail.do?refer=search&itemId=1000006625

I think it was one of the best selling pieces of sheet music, ever.

I've played drums for probably about six years now, I guess, maybe closer to five.  I played piano for nine years, but haven't played for about 3 or 4 years since.  I also took up guitar for about six months, but then quit.

This is amazing; it's like 90% of the people on xixax play drums, and yet in real life I can't find a single drummer when I'm looking for one (except for my 14-year-old next door neighbor, and he doesn't count because he sucks and his favorite band is Linkin Park... I mean, it's okay if you like Linkin Park, but for your favorite band to be Linkin Park... I don't know, there's something distressing about that).

there is something wrong if someones favorite band is linkin park.  it would clearly mean that that person would have no taste in quality music.
as for me,   i  can play the first few notes of metallicas's "nothing else matters" on guitar.  and i can play "joy to the world" on piano/80's style casio mini keyboard.
thats about it...i suck

ive played drums for about thirteen years (only took lessons for the first two), i taught myself how to play harmonica a few months back, i taught myself how to play guitar just before i turned fourteen, and i can sing.  my voice is somewhat limited, but what it can do it does well.  i can only read the most simplistic of sheet musics.

Jeremy had me with The Christmas, but my christ cinephile, between your new pearl jam rank and your cleverass name, I think you win.

So...The Banned Members....now, who will play what?

I suggest Polkablues is the front man, considering his work in the art gallery. But we'll have to take it up a notch, because I want to play drums (I'm like Dave Grohl meets less talent plus a little sloppy, but all heart baby) and I have to rock the fuck out. None of this indie rock shit, unless it fucking rocks.

Also, to get the world's attention (if that's what we want) we need a pretty face. but if polkablues doesn't have a pretty face, I think we'll be ok. We can always just have one of our pretty members stand beside him...GDIDM I'm looking in your direction.

I grew up playing piano and violin.  Though I'm really bad at them piano these days.  I switched to jazz violin in college, but was classically trained before that.  In middle school I've picked up the acoustic guitar and then a year later I started playing the drums.  Recently I've been getting into latin and brazilian funk/ jazz stuff.  I can also fake competence on the bass (but with a pick.)

I can play the guitar (and i have been for 7 years) and i've recently been playing lots of piano...having a pretty good understanding of the guitar  makes playing the keyboards much easier....i've been tinkering on a friend's banjo and its blowing my mind with its wonderful tones. I guess you could say i play the "computer" as well because you can do damn near anything with the right sound system and the newest copy of fruity loops. There's no greater feeling in the world than being on a stage playing with your friends for a crowd thats really diggin it...in our little group it seems everytime we cover The Meters' song "Cissy Strut" everyone in the place will dance....guaranteed

Ok, so we've got our basic setup. We can add Pete as the 12 inch pianist/violinist cliche. He can also jizz on someone's mother's face, so we have aristocrats style variety act going too. P will play turntables, featuring digivoxed samples of "it's no Curb" and various insults.
