Title: Tarantino rankings
Post by: Gold Trumpet on December 12, 2003, 06:21:54 PM
I honestly believe a good judge of personal taste for films today comes from how you measure Tarantino. He is the center to everything popular in movies today. Some people have his films as high art while others just don't care for them. Also, to rank by star rating is so easy for him because he hasn't made that many films and his films seems to have been analyzed and discussed to death where everyone knows where they stand with them. I'll go first:

Resevoir Dogs: ** 1/2
Pulp Fiction: *** 1/2
Jackie Brown: **
Kill Bill, Vol. 1: ** 1/2

Dogs was good, but I dunno, not great. Fiction was of course good, but it's lost its weight over time. Jackie Brown was a good film, gets looked over way too much. I originally had it at 2 and a half stars, but no way Dogs is better than this.

Kill Bill just fucking floored me, it's Tarantino with the right amount of everything, a little heart, a little cool dialogue, energy, but it takes time to settle down as well. And it's just way too fucking fun.

Reservoir Dogs = *** (Great debut; the script does so much with so little)
Pulp Fiction = ****
Jackie Brown = **** (I tied them because the are both his best films for different reasons. I think the editing and cinematography in "Jackie" is better, but I love the characters in "Pulp" slightly more. On any given day, for me, one is better than the other)
Kill Bill Vol. 1 = ** (Not near his other films; more style than substance)

I think of Tarantino movies like children.  You can say you love them all equally, but deep down, there are favorites.  Personally, I'm a Jackie Brown man.  I dig Quentin's assessment that it's a 'hang out' movie.

Jackie Brown is his best, but Pulp is just a genuine favourite. Its got the characters, the structure, the originality, the dialogue and the soundtrack that make it so much.... fun.

Reservoir Dogs ***½
Pulp Fiction ****+
Jackie Brown ****
Kill Bill ***½

I think I really overrated Kill Bill when it came out (problem I have with a lot of films because of hype, excitement, whatever), but looking back on it, it really is an exercise of style over substance.  Still, it's a good one.  Pulp Fiction is just gold, and Jackie Brown is excellent as well.  Reservoir Dogs is really stylized for a film with such a low budget as well, and I like Ebert's criticism of it, even though I like the film more than he did: that characters in such dire situations wouldn't do as much talking (as the Tim Roth character does), and perhaps more should be done with his characters instead of just talking.

Reservior Dogs *** (Michael Madsen and the conversation about color names were my favorite things about this movie)
Pulp Fiction *** 1/2 (Very interesting plot and it captivated me the whole way through.)
Jackie Brown ****  (most underrated, smart and best film)
Kill Bill vol. 1 *** (fluff compared to his earlier works, but had enough enjoyable style and energy to boost my rating to 3 stars)

I guess I'll do Spike as well, mainly just to make Gold Trumpet mad:

Being John Malkovich- ****
Adaptation- ***1/2

I just have to see at least a third by him to really be able to predict his greatness, it's just a little too early to tell, but he does have a wonderful start.  One can't help but wonder how good Spike's movies would be if Kaufman didn't write for him.  Obviously Jonze is a creative guy, he showed that in his videos, but I would like to see if he can handle a film of his own creation.

exactly my problem. Tarantino can be given a ranking thread because everyone knows where they stand with him as a filmmaker already and it is interesting to see what they think of his films considering he is the center of the film universe and many films now are just influences from his. Now every director is getting the treatment in this thread and discussion is being replaced with easy ranking. They aren't in the same boat as Tarantino.

was that "these guys aren't in the same boat as Tarantino" comment concocted in to start a controversy or something?  Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Tarantino, but he's only been around for little over a decade.  Yes, I usually say he's my FAVORITE director, but he is not the BEST.  That crown belongs to either Kubrick, Fellini, Hitchcock, or Welles.
Another thing, it's obvious that more people are enjoying this thread than you are, so why don't you just let it go.

That would work, but it's hard to cover all of the films you like and the reasons why.  So ratings are the easy way to voice a quick opinion.

That "these guys aren't in the same boat as Tarantino" comment was for the reason of the cultural impact Tarantino has had on the film world today in popularity. By asking people how they rank his films, it will maybe probe into what they think of the film world today in its influence. I also realize saying Tarantino is God to every film is pretensious, but hey, he's had the biggest impact of any filmmaker.  Nothing to do wiith quality at all and if you look at my own rankings of his films, you'll see I don't believe he is really that great anyways.

Also, I won't let it go simply because this is a Tarantino thread in the Tarantino forum. What relevance does ranking Spike Jonze have here? None. Does this mean you guys are forbidden to rank their films? Not at all. Just find the right playground to do it in and get the hell out of this one before the 6th graders all kick your ass.

So harsh...

Although, the cultural impact comment about Tarantino was factual.  I'm sure you also intend to show the pace of his impact as part of his phenomenon.
All right....I'll play ball with you.

You know what problem I've found with Tarantino?  I'm sure this is a common observation with his influence, but filmmaker's who "want to be him" don't know how to go about it.  It's kind of like the Nirvana thing.  Both of them shook up the medium that they were in, but also ruined it at the same time.  For Tarantino: people think that to be as violent as possible and have a screwy narrative makes you the "next Tarantino", many don't realize that his dialogue is what drives his film to greatness.  With Nirvana: people think that to yell at the top of your lungs and pretend you're depressed will make you the "next Kurt Cobain", when really it's the melody that drives their songs to greatness.

They are paralleled 90's icons who were/are misunderstood even to this day.

The playground comment was suppose to be a joke. I thought that was obvious given how left field it was to the tone of what I was saying. Either way, I agree with you on the nirvana comparison, but the larger question here is how much do people believe in the talent of Quentin Tarantino. Some see him as well done fluff and others as high art. Tarantino's "art" is in question and how much people believe in it. On second thought, I think I should have begun my question asking people what side of the ball they stood on this issue.
Title: Tarantino rankings

I think it's art, mainly because it's a mesh of foreign arthouse cinema and american and hong kong B-movies.  The outcome is pure entertainment in every sense of the word.  I totally don't think his stuff is "fluff".  He does what Sergio Leone did 30 years before him, by taking something we've seen already and putting a different spin on it.  There are too many little things that make his movies either perfect or near perfect to be taken lightly.  He makes his versions of his favorite films by matching nearly every detail from the most subtle camera shot to the most obvious hairstyle.  He's an artist, no question, as far as I'm concerned.

In all seriousness, I like these things as a quick reference to how people tier a filmmaker's work. It's like a quick discussion guide sheet. We can start from the list, and get into talking from there.

Pulp Fiction = **** 1/2

Kill Bill = ***

I think Pulp Fiction is indeed a modern masterpiece for a zillion different reasons, Reservoir Dogs was a fresh take on a played-out genre, Jackie Brown was a very mature offering in terms of themes typically covered in QT films, and Kill Bill was a very fun film- heavy on style, with a slick visceral wallop, but the weakest of his films in terms of substance.

today i'm hyped about #9 having the same budget as Django Unchained. i think that movie is a goddamn beast, and when i think about the beastliness of his movies, that's what my list looks like.

1 - Jackie Brown
2 - Pulp Fiction
3 - Kill Bill Vol. 1
4 - Inglourious Basterds
5 - Django Unchained
6 - The Hateful Eight
7 - Kill Bill Vol. 2
8 - Reservoir Dogs
9 - Death Proof

I've been through several phases with Tarantino, ranging from boundless adoration to being completely over him, and have landed myself at the ripe old age of 30 in a comfortable, cozily loving relationship with his work. I'm not into him as intensely as when I was young (unlike PTA), but I'm always happy to see him, and always look forward to his next film (#9 has me particularly excited).

Everyone on the internet seems to be doing this again, so let's try. Going to combine Kill Bill, per Tarantino's instructions.

1. Inglourious Basterds
2. Jackie Brown
3. Kill Bill
4. Once Upon A Time ... In Hollywood
5. Pulp Fiction
6. Django Unchained
7. Hateful Eight
8. Death Proof
9. Reservoir Dogs

The top 5 are all very close.

Jackie Brown (However, Out of Sight is still 5x better. Need to rewatch Get Shorty)
Kill Bill Vol.1 (It's fun. In a way, his most honest film.)
Pulp Fiction
Kill Bill Vol.2
Reservoir Dogs
Death Proof
The Hateful Eight
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (Just bad fan fiction. The Steve McQueen exposition dump was cringworthy. Last 20 minutes gave me severe second hand embarrassment. That's the best he could've come up with? Other than a couple funny lines at the very end, Rick Dalton wasn't even remotely compelling.)
Django Unchained (Garbage.)

Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Django Unchained can all be tied, in my mind. They're dope, just not as geek'd about them as I once was.

Finally got around to watching Django and was very underwhelmed. Gonna have to scroll through that thread later because I had so many wtf moments - and not in a good way. I really need to rewatch JB and the KBs, but I think this is a decently solid ranking:

Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood
Jackie Brown
Pulp Fiction
Kill Bill Vol. 2
Kill Bill Vol. 1
The Hateful Eight
Reservoir Dogs
Death Proof
Inglourious Basterds
Django Unchained
