Title: Top 10 Live Albums
Post by: ᾦɐļᵲʊʂ on June 17, 2005, 12:06:54 PM
What are your favorite albums of live shows? This list could see revision, but as it comes to mind, these are my favorites...

10 - Nirvana - Unplugged In New York (Some really good covers, a very intimate show. The downside is they played some Nirvana tunes.)

9 - Simon and Garfunkel - Concert In Central Park (Really great performances in this show)

8 - Allman Brothers - Live at the Filmore (My favorite of the Allman Bros' Live shows that I've heard. Very solid set.)

7 - Family Values 1998 (Although most of the bands weren't so great, there were some pretty good performances on this. Limp Bizkit's song Cambodia makes me almost want to listen to them.)

6 - Mighty, Mighty Bosstones - Live From the Middle East (Very great show, amazing setlist)

5 - Phish - A Live One (Say what you want about Phish, they are a very well assembled jam band)

4 - Ben Folds Live (Great performances of his songs, very intimate approach of just Ben and a piano)

3 - Nine Inch Nails - What Could Have Been (Great performances, makes a lot of the songs from his earlier career much better like Sin and Terrible Lie. The CD seemed to keep playing every track I wanted to hear, excluding a few transitions that I was just used to from the CD's. Like The Wretched into We're In This Together Now)

2 - Metallica - S&M (Normally I hate Metallica, but when they're backed by the San Fransisco Orchestra, their music takes on a whole new level. Doesn't reverse my opinion of them, but I listen to this album religiously)

1 - Bjork - Live Box (I couldn't pick one, so I went for the entire set. Great shows, all around)

I have a good bootleg of a Phish show that's like 3 CD's long, and on one CD they play all of Dark Side of the Moon.

It was great.

I haven't heard another live albums to make a ten list but here's some favorites of mine: Aimee Mann - Live at St. Ann's Warehouse, Ben Folds Live, Coldplay Live 2003, Neil Young Unplugged. There's a great bootleg of Rufus Wainwright songs  on ebay that's on two discs. Also his dvd concert on the Want Two album was one of the best ever.

Not more than occasionally, but I really like when bands jam... it's good thinking music to me, usually inspires me.

NOTES:
- I went through a major jam band phase toward the end of the 90's.  As a result, I attained a number of live albums from those bands.  I have since done away with most of that stuff and don't listen to much of it anymore, however, the live albums from those bands hold up well (for the most part).  Because of this, there is a heavy bias toward the live albums of jam bands because I had so many of them (and the live album was usually the best representative of a jam band anyway, short of going to a show).

- Miles of Aisles is a personal favorite.  There's nothing really groundbreaking to justify such a lofty spot on the list, especially coming from the brilliance of much of Joni's studio work.  However, I really enjoy the arrangements of the songs, the mood and pacing of the album.  It does work kind of as a greatest hits collection, except all the songs were performed basically in the style of Court and Spark (yet, ironically containing no songs from said album), accompainied by the competent backing of the L.A. Express.  I find it is oftentimes the first album I reach for when I'm not sure what I want to listen to.  That must count for something.

lately, i've been into collecting live shows that aren't "officially" released on cd unlike all the albums in this thread.  i am curious to see what other people have.  also, i am looking for richard ashcroft/the verve, more neil young, the flaming lips, and roger water's "the pros and cons of hitchiking" tour w/ eric clapton.  does anyone know a good place on the net to buy/trade for shows that i am looking for or a site that has a huge archive to stream/check out.  thanks.
