Philip K. Dick and/or Elmore Leonard.
both have had numerous films made from their books. just wondered what you liked / recommend?
i just picked up Dick's Eye in the Sky today at the library.

Of Dick, I've only read A Scanner Darkly and Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep. I'd recommend both, ESPECIALLY the former. It's very very good.

It is the basis, but no, the film isn't exactly close to it. Although they're both brilliant in their own rights.
I went through an Elmore Leonard period where I would read nothing but his books... think I read like thirteen in a row.
He wrote mainly westerns and crime novels... I would stick with the crime novels... he really is the master of pulp fiction. If you want to give him a chance, make sure you read a few of his books. You'll start to see all the same characters showing up (like Michael Keaton in Out of Sight and Jackie Brown).
Get Shorty is really good, but avoid the sequel "Be Cool". Pronto, Glitter, and Riding The Rap... I remember liking those, but it's been about eight years. I should read them again.
PKD... Read his shorts then read DADOES and A Scanner Darkly.

VALIS is great, too. Some seriously deranged, philosophical sci-fi, but so interesting....

Writer Elmore Leonard has been out promoting "Mr. Paradise," his new crime novel, and gave the San Francisco Chronicle an update on what various books of his have been optioned and by whom.
John Travolta begins filming next month on "Be Cool," reprising his role as Chili Palmer in this sequel to "Get Shorty." Written in 1999 by Leonard at MGM's request, the novel shifts the action from movies to music.
Quentin Tarantino and Miramax have the rights to adapt "Killshot," a 1989 Leonard book about a half-Indian, half-French Canadian hit man plying his trade in the Midwest.
John Malkovich's production company Mr. Mudd plans to adapt "Freaky Deaky, " Leonard's 1988 novel about former '60s activists in Detroit caught up in an extortion caper.

i guess you pay and have so many years to do something with it, if not, the rights go back to the owner to sell to another?
I started reading Elmore Leonard's "Be Cool" yesterday. I'm only about 30 pages into it, but it seems interesting so far.
