Title: Miscellaneous trailers
Post by: Mel on August 05, 2014, 07:21:23 AM
Since, I have been posting those in the shoutbox for some time, it could use a thread. I find those trailers interesting or plainly weird. I won't use a BB code for Youtube, since a dozen of videos embedded on a one page is an overkill.

They Have Escaped (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYKQeDodoVM)
A boy and a girl meet at a custody center for youth with difficulties. The boy has come to serve his obligatory civil service. The girl is one of the youths in custody, and she is constantly in trouble, with a fire inside her and a lust for life that can't be quashed or controlled. The boy becomes infatuated with the girl. He is a quiet one; a stutterer. But there is a fire inside him as well. Rules, laws, punishment; the shackles of the hostile environment with no understanding around them can be broken. They steal a car and flee together. Thus begins a journey with endless escapes.

Shrew's Nest  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuLVPWNcCqs)
Spain, 1950s. Monste's agoraphobia keeps her locked in a sinister apartment in Madrid and her only link to reality is the little sister she sacrificed her youth to raise. But one day, a reckless young neighbour, Carlos, falls down the stairwell and drags himself to their door. Someone has entered the shrew's nest... and perhaps he'll never leave.

Some documentaries:

Big Men (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAE1WoGWgcA)
The film's central story follows a small group of American explorers at Dallas-based oil company Kosmos Energy. Between 2007 and 2011, with unprecedented, independent access, Big Men's two-person crew filmed inside the oil company as Kosmos and its partners discovered and developed the first commercial oil field in Ghana's history. Simultaneously the crew filmed in the swamps of Nigeria's Niger Delta, following the exploits of a militant gang to reveal another side of the economy of oil: people trying to profit in any way possible, because they've given up on waiting for the money to trickle down. So what happens when a group of hungry people discover a massive and exquisitely rare pot of gold in one of the poorest places on earth?

The Green Prince (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FclTE28oI3Y)
Set against the chaotic backdrop of recent events in the Middle East, Nadav Schirman's THE GREEN PRINCE retraces the details of a highly unprecedented partnership that developed between sworn enemies. In the style of a tense psychological thriller, this extraordinary documentary recounts the true story of the son of a Hamas leader who emerged as one of Israel's prized informants, and the Shin Bet agent who risked his career to protect him.

The movie doesn't look that great but that's a great line to put in the trailer because it effectively filters your audience down to those who'll be receptive to the movie. I'm with Just Withnail. Speaking of Withnail, Withnail and I's Bruce Robinson wrote a novel called The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman, parts which this reminds me of. This is from the amazon blurb:
QuotePerhaps the most peculiar aspect of The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman is the author's fascination with every form of bodily excretion. Feces, sputum, semen, earwax--the list is endless. We discover early on that Thomas "from the age of four ... navigated all lavatories and shat himself everywhere else," and the pages that follow detail the boy's obsession with his own fecal matter in terms that are as imaginative as they are repugnant.

No No (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxen7thd5BU) (Documentary)
On June 12, 1970, Dock Ellis threw a no-hitter for the Pittsburgh Pirates - on LSD. In 137 years of organized professional baseball, it's the only no-hitter of its kind. Dock was often embroiled in controversy on and off the field. While professional baseball hadn't fully embraced racial equality, he was an outspoken leader who lived the expression 'Black is Beautiful!' His fearlessness enabled him to become one of the most intimidating pitchers of the 70's and a trailblazer for a new wave of civil rights. After retiring, Dock became as outspoken about his career-spanning substance abuse issues as he had been about intolerance. He spent decades utilizing his brash approach as a counselor, helping other addicts in their recoveries. Through intimate stories and a trove of archival footage, NO NO: A DOCKUMENTARY brings Dock's vibrant life to light, burnishing the legend and revealing the man behind it.

The Mold has big plans for Ian, but they may not be as innocent as they seem. A labyrinthine-narrative follows, full of colorfully-drawn characters and gruesome body horror. "The Mold knows, Jack. The Mold knows."

all of these seem to be pretty random, but good quality, and the descriptions are taken from different online sources instead of written by the user. ...which was the main critique of the posts i made upon my return, even suggested that i was 'making fun of the site'. so, i'm not trying to be an asshole, obviously i've been very quiet lately, but what is the difference between this thread and what i was doing that received hating?

I didn't have any problem with what you were posting in that thread, personally. I think there may have just been some over-sensitivity at that point in time which led to misinterpretation of intention.

Agreed. I think it's that your picks were obscure and random enough to be potential trolling, and since you weren't saying much else, people thought you might be hostile and one's interpretation could go either way. Since it was kind of 50/50 I didn't say anything. I think it's clear now that you weren't trolling though.

L.A. Slasher (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzWs3YO3Avo) (Horror)
Incensed by the tabloid culture which celebrates it, the L.A. Slasher publicly abducts a series of reality TV stars, while the media and general public in turn begin to question if society is better off without them. A biting, social satire about reality TV and the glorification of people who are famous for simply being famous, "L.A. Slasher" explores why it has become acceptable and even admirable for people to become influential and wealthy based on no merit or talent - purely through notoriety achieved through shameful behavior.

Here are some trailers for some movies I've seen at work, during press screenings:

Self Made (Drama)
Directed by Shira Geffen and starring Sarah Adler and Samira Saraya. Telling the story of two women: one Israeli, the other Palestinian - who are trapped within their respective worlds. After a mix-up at a checkpoint, they find themselves living the life of the other on the opposite side of the border.

In Darkness We Fall
(Horror)
Directed by Alfredo Montero. Found footage, Spanish horror movie with a juicy feminist twist (and a bad trailer) actually quite fun, this one. 80mins and entertaining throughout.

Métamorphoses (Drama)
Directed by Christophe Honoré. Greek gods and other characters from the myths, walk among humans and wreck havoc.

Overall, I'd call it lukewarm, to be honest. It has some beautiful images and passages. But overall, I felt it was trying a bit too hard but in the wrong places. (like the music) It's split into various different stories and some are clearly much stronger than others. I think that once I caught wind of the movie's premise, I expected much more than what I got. But there are some cool ideas here, and the execution is interesting, so it's definitely worth a watch...

Written by Rolf de Heer and David Gulpilil as a collaborative project, CHARLIE'S COUNTRY stars Gulpilil as blackfella Charlie, who is getting older, and is out of sorts. The government's intervention is making life more difficult on his remote community, what with the proper policing of whitefella laws that don't generally make much sense, and Charlie's kin seeming more interested in going along with things than doing anything about it. So Charlie takes off, to live the old way, but in doing so sets off a chain of events in his life that has him return to his community chastened, and somewhat the wiser.

Tokyo Tribe (Gangs/Rap musical/Sion Sono madness)

Tokyo. A multitude of tribes exist, with resident youth ruling the streets through violence while protecting their own turf. Shibuya Saru, Shinjuku Hands, Kabuki GiraGira Girls, Musashino Saru and... Bukuro Wu-Ronz. Until now, crossing territorial lines has led to riots and rumbles.

In Bukuro, Big Buppa (Big Daddy), his son Nkoi and Wu-Ronz leader Mera have local politicians in their pockets, taking control of the neighbourhood while expanding their power. Even within tribal rivalries, Mera holds a particular grudge against Musashino Saru.

One day, Tokyo Tribe's lead character Kai, a Musashino Saru member, enters Bukuro turf with fellow gang member Hasheem and Musashino Saru leader Tera to help out their abducted comrade, Kim. There, Kai meets a mysterious girl named Sunmi.

Kai and Mera face off.

Why does Mera regard Kai with such hostility?

What is Sunmi's true identity?

Who is the 'Archbishop' that Big Daddy's crew revere?

The tribes are on the verge of exploding. Tonight, Tokyo is about to be enveloped in a battle that must be seen to be believed...

this is playing for a week and a half at cinefamily

cinefamily summarizes it like this:

QuoteTake a healthy dose of sexually charged interpersonal drama, mix in some Lovecraft by way of Zulawski's Possession and stew in a broth of Mexican mysticism and you have Amat Escalante's The Untamed. Following up his critical darling Heli, Escalante, a supernova among Mexico City's new wave of rising star directors, has a flawless sense of tone, deftly balancing the light and dark of his character's explosive personal lives with shocking cosmic weirdness, body horror, and graphic sex. In exploring the interplay between machismo, homophobia and closeted homosexuality, as framed in Latin culture, the film becomes both a literal and metaphorical monster movie, its tentacled, pleasure-offering creature a corporeal manifestation of the characters' tortured quest for satisfaction of both body and spirit. More than mere provocation, Escalante's vision is every bit as honest as it is horrifying and beautiful, a bold cinematic voice that is sure to find an international audience.

if Alexandro passes this way perhaps a discussion about the line "a supernova among Mexico City's new wave of rising star directors"

youtube summarizes it like this:

QuoteAlejandra and Angel live with their young sons in Guanajuato, Mexico. Theirs is a tense relationship, with the overly macho Angel exerting physical and psychological control over his family as he attempts to hide the affair he's having with Fabián, Alejandra's brother. Their grim status quo undergoes a world of change when the couple meets a loner named Verónica. She takes them to a cabin in the woods and shows them her secret — something that is a source of pleasure as well as a force of destruction. Clearly, nothing will ever be the same again.

Hypnotic, perturbing, and utterly enthralling, The Untamed is a bold portrayal of a chauvinistic society characterized by homophobia and misogyny. Trapped in a violent and unsatisfying relationship, Alejandra is desperate to flee but too afraid. With Verónica's help, however, she taps into an inner strength she didn't know she had. Escalante overlays this family drama and social commentary with truly bizarre elements of science fiction and horror, expertly bending genres to create a wholly unique and mind-blowing piece.

Expertly shot and methodically paced, The Untamed explores the human psyche: the reptile brain, our primal desires, and our unfortunate predilection for selfdestruction. It also offers a liberating vision of female autonomy. Sensual, erotic, and uncompromisingly weird, The Untamed will be difficult to forget.

Dir. Amat Escalante, 2016, DCP, 100 min.

What is wrong with everybody involved in that remake? A "white savior" running around in a fucking hoodie blowing away criminals in a poorly thought-out "Stand-your-ground" defense? And he's supposed to be the good guy?

I know that by today's standard, Death Wish is a problematic movie, but this is crazy.

currently on Netflix? i heard the director chatting with Elvis Mitchell.  the director is Amman Abbasi, he's listed as a previous assistant to David Gordon Green. for Dayveon he was director/cowriter/coproducer/composer. he's composed other music for other movies. other producers for Dayveon are, yes, David Gordon Green, and Jody Hill, Danny McBride, and more people i'm not familiar with.

what really grabbed me is Elvis asked Amman what movies influenced Dayveon, and Amman listed My Life As A Dog, Ratcatcher, and Il Posto. because i love those three movies i made this post.

Currently working on making a daytime slasher shot on Super 8mm, and my production designer introduced me to this wonderful flick:

QuoteIt featured Gainesville, Florida punk bands such as Psychic Violents, Young Pioneers, Mutley Chix, Doldrums, Just Demigods, Cindy Brady's Lisp, Officer Friendly, and the Smegmas, as well as local speed metal band Hellwitch and avantgarde incidental music by The Bill Perry Orchestra. Director Charles Pinion went on to make several other underground movies (Red Spirit Lake, We Await and the 2014 3D feature American Mummy).

Twisted Issues was originally intended to be a punk rockumentary featuring Gainesville bands, but the inclusion of writers Steve Antczak and Hawk (James C. Bassett) to the mix added the horror, element to the story, featuring a so-called Death Skater who kills characters played by members of the aforementioned bands after they inadvertently kill him.

How much longer before A24's image eats itself alive?
Why does it feel like they took their "unconventional" feature film platform and turned it instead into Urban Outfitters?
