there's like four of these movies. two sequels and a remake. The first three came in a box set that i bought my sister for her birthday a couple years ago.

what's your opinion on the sequels?

New York Stories

Another rental store pickup. Can't believe Coppola attached his name to Life Without Zoe. I really want to believe that a very young Sofia was responsible for everything and he only attached his name to get it released. Also very criminal that these 3 shorts are only available in Full Screen format. Full Screen Scorsese is always a crime. I wonder if there are interviews from any of the 3 (now 4 with Sofia) in regards to Life Without Zoe from around the time it was released or an interviewer asking in retrospect.

'Sophie's Choice'

A remarkable heartbreaking performance by Meryl in a lets face it-a slightly heavy handed film that is pulled from the depths with help from Kevin Kline and Peter Macnicol. Not much else to say.

'The Bad and The Beautiful'

Lana Turners best performance in a film about how disgusting hollywood can turn you. How it can make your negative traits shine and sparkle in a town where the sun is shining behind dreary clouds. Kirk Douglas makes you hate and love him all a the same time. Hes seductive and ultimately that's how he sucks you in. I've met plenty of men like kirk douglass's character. In fact I've met so many like him, I've stopped counting. Definitely a movie to pick up.

Gizmodo/Boy Genius report that Blockbuster is temporarily avoiding bankruptcy, but is now out of the NYSE:

Things stateside haven't gone the way of Blockbuster Portugal (yet) but while the Blockbuster was able to make arrangements with creditors and avoid bankruptcy this week, it will be forced to delist from the New York Stock Exchange after a proposed reverse stock split fell through. Even the extension on debt payments it was able to negotiate hasn't satisfied analysts, with our old friend Michael Pachter telling Reuters "there's nothing on the horizon that makes it look like Blockbuster is going to be more profitable." Ouch. A substantial amount of debt has long been a problem for Blockbuster as it tries to adjust to a changing marketplace with Redbox and Netflix, and with shares trading at .18, has now made its existence more precarious than ever.

Obviously what you are doing right now is called (in my upcoming book of psychology at least) validation. I think it's a normal thing to do. People will reply, say anything, and then you're gonna do what you were subconsciently thinking of doing all along.

White Heat

I rented this because it's one of Marty's fave gangsters films and that was enough, plus ive never seen a james cagney film. it was really good, and funny how he wasn't the scarier character but his mom.

Le Doulos

My third Melville, (having seen Le samourai and Le deuxième souffle <-- my fave of the these three). this is second, and like the ones ive seen I dont connect with it instantly, but eventually I did and its pretty great. the interviews have some good stories about Melville.

Departures

great great film, engaging from start to finish and beautifully shot, highly recommended.

The Informers

Do NOT see this, its not horrible but at no point makes you care for anyone, fortunately its only 90min, but still a waste of time, and it didnt help at all that it was the last one of these four I saw.

Winona looks rough.
He held on. The dolphin and all the rest of its pod turned and swam out to sea, and still he held on. This is it, he thought. Then he remembered that they were air-breathers too. It was going to be all right.

Madeinusa

wri/dir - Claudia Llosa

A friend of mine who's opinion I really respect recently told me Claudia Llosa was one of the filmmakers she was was keeping an eye on and having never heard of her I decided to give her debut a try and I was glad I did. It's a twist on the stranger rolls into the small town and shakes things up theme. This time it's a stranger from Lima, Peru who finds himself stuck in small inbred indigenous town after a road is flooded out. The stranger has arrived right at the beginning of Holy Time for this village. The time from Good Friday to Easter Sunday where they believe God is dead and therefore nothing is a sin. The story follows the eponymous Madeinusa who's a young girl dubbed the towns virgin during Holy Time as she becomes fascinated with the misplaced stranger and begins questioning her own life within the village as well as the sexual advances of her own father who is also the town mayor.

Has anyone else seen this? It's a very strong debut and highly recommended. I'm looking for her followup, The Milk of Sorrow, but it doesn't seem to be available on DVD. Has anyone seen it?

Rented these in the past weeks...

Tell No One. this is really good, a very well made thriller.
My son my son. I'm convinced that if Michael Shannon wasnt an actor he would be a serial killer. the film was just ok, Bad Lieutenant was way better.

Mother. pete was right, watch this.
Battle Royale.  :yabbse-thumbup:

LY@Marienbad. I won't lie, I wanted to fast forward this if it wasnt for the amazing composition shots, and im glad i didnt because after the first 30min. it really took off, the fast dolly shot that goes to the white room gave me chills, also the extras in the criterion are really good.
Empire of passion. I'm watching this tonight.

Last life. pete was right again, watch this if you haven't.
White ribbon. The b/w photography is flawless, also loved that they didnt explain everything.

Recently resaw 'And God Created Woman'. Bridgett Bardott is just perfect and she knows how to flaunt everything shes got. She's one more reason why I should have grown up in the 1960's.

'Assassination of a High School President' is 'Brick' without the static movements and "Film Noir" dialogue that was so present in 'Brick'. Actually, there is a little bit of that type of dialogue and the same character archytypes but its much more fluid and it has less of a stricter view of what a film noir can do in that particular genre. That benefits the film and made it more enjoyable in some areas than 'Brick'. If you want to check it out, do so.

'Megamind'

I know I might get some shit for this but I fell completely in love with this movie. Its a nice screwaround towards what the superhero movie could be. I could even see a live action version of this, done with the exact same actors and I think they could pull it off. Although I'm not sure how they would do david cross's character. Well, maybe a gigantic amount of CGI could fix some of those problems if they made it live action. Anyway, loved it to death.

'Casino Jack'

Kevin brings in another intense and riveting performance as Jack Abramoff. It breaks down how he took excess to the limit and screwed the USA in the process while still getting the audience to sympathize with him, if only a tiny bit. Kinda sad this is the last film of George's Career but the film is completely worth it. Jon Lovitz is sublimely disgusting. Check it out.

'The Pat Tillman Story'

Jesus, what a devastating and compelling story. I don't want to give away too much but its one of the best documentary's about sacrafice and military lies set in the iraq backdrop. Much more intriguing than any fictional film about the Iraq or Afighanistan, My jaw was on the floor not beacuse of surprise but because of how well it was put together.
