I had a nomination ballot 75% filled out and accidentally deleted it. Forgot to redo it, but happy my film of choice is nominated for all the good awards. I will campaign the shit out of that film.

To those who haven't seen it, check out Enter the Void.

I don't get the fuzz about Enter the Void. Seems like people jumping on the fucking bandwagon and nothing else.

Tiny Furniture should be nominated for debut film, but I guess not a lot of people here have seen it.

Machete for Worst Movie? Ridiculous.

And it's stupid that people here keep ignoring how awesome Avatar is. It's not a bad thing to vote for it just because it made a ton of money. These awards are like the fucking Academy Awards, in fact very similar nominations. You should have voted Crash as the best movie of the decade.

Yea, I'm jumping on a bandwagon and liking a movie for trend's sake. I hate how I do that all the time.

Yep. As far as I'm concerned, we all got it pretty right this year.

"The Kids Are All Right" as one of the year's worst is hilarious.  It's heavily overrated and the story hinges on one subject.  I love how we buck the trend.

No love for "I Am Love".  That's a shame.

This whole post is shocking. You "don't get" the love for Void yet you go "stupid" over the underrateness of Avatar? I think time has teached us that Avatar was vastly overrated. I can't even watch it on the lcd screens at the supermarket without cringing. in a couple of years watching that film will be like watching King Kong. Well, maybe not as bad, but close.

Machete had a lot potential but is really shitty and boring after the first 10 minutes. Plus it aims to be this b movie, sleazy experience and has the the most frustrating sex scenes in history. As I remember from reading that thread, you were the only one who was so enthusiastic about it. Everyone else seemed to be mildly disappointed.

I left from a showing of "Kids" after 20 minutes. I hated the vibe of the film, hated the "oh we're so liberal and cool" attitude the film has, and it just rubbed me the wrong way.

"I am love" had great cinematography, and yes, it would have been nice to see some recognition to that. The rest of the film felt a little empty to me.

All in all, these are awesome nominations.

I was pretty happy with Black Swan not getting a screenplay nod. Thought the story was kind of weak. That was a technical showcase for Aronscarfsky and Libatique and an acting showcase for NatPo. Kind of like how Social Network was Finchers movie (and Sorkins in place of Libatique). I don't get the love for Eisenberg. He has Fincher and Sorkin to thank more than he does himself.

I love the worst movie category. I agree with all of them. Wish there were 6 spots so Trash Humpers could be there. Ugh.

How did you guys not vote Jersey Shore for best tv show? Are you guys even watching it? It's the best dramatic show on television. How can you not feel bad for the emotional rollercoaster Ronnie has been on this season because of his testosterone levels due to steroid abuse? He's either yelling at someone and picking a fight or crying in a corner somewhere. And what about The Situations effort to hide his homosexuality from the rest of his alpha-male roommates? And finally, how about Snookies weight? Jersey Shore is the greatest sci-fi show on television right now. What other show has a main character than can gain 30lbs from one episode to the next all while being 4 foot 9 tall? It's harrowing stuff, people!

I wouldn't go that far, and i didn't send in nominations this year, but If it were only up to me I'd have it in the best and worst film categories.  It seems to have that kind of polar response, myself siding with worst.

I'm getting more and more convinced that King's Speech is going to walk away with the Oscars, so we here at Xixax have an obligation... nay, a DUTY... to once again succeed where the academy has failed. So please, vote your asses off, so this sense of smug superiority can carry us through another year.
Title: Re: 2011 Xixax Awards: FINAL VOTE!
Post by: socketlevel on February 26, 2011, 02:23:13 PM
don't underestimate the preferential ballot. it's the very reason avatar didn't get it last year. With preferential you only win when you have 50.1% of the vote.

I suspect that the kings speech will be a lot of #1 choices for the Oprah crowd in the Academy, but it won't be the Top 5 for a lot of others. In the past, with 5 nominations and the first-past-the-post system I think this crowd was the majority, look to years like when the English patient won. but in that system theoretically they'd could only have to get 21% of the vote and still win. Granted that would be a very competitive 5 way split. My guess is if the majority had their ballot still count after their first choice was eliminated, they wouldn't have sided with the front runner.

So let's just say the kings speech gets 40% of #1 choices, and social network gets 25%, black swan gets 15% and true grit gets 14%. As soon as true grit is eliminated, they tally those votes up and half goes to social network as the #2 choice and the other half to black swan and a small % goes to kings speech. At that point it could look like this: Kings speech 43%; social network 30.5%; black swan 20.5%. Then black swan is eliminated and all those votes went to social network. we end up with Kings speech 43.5% and social network with 50.5%.

This is truly a great system by my tastes, and it's more democratic. The crowd that i feel goes for the safe vote has a much weaker voice then they used to. To generalize, i believe people that would vote for social network wouldn't have the kings speech as their #2 vote as likely as true grit or black swan. I might eat my words on this when the day comes but i believe the two best shots at the academy award are black swan and the social network because they appeal to both crowds. As long as they get enough votes to last the initial rounds of the preferential system, they'll pick up a lot of 2nd choices based on what gets eliminated.

we'll see.

EDIT - sadly last i knew of the system the preferential ballot is only used for best picture. you might be right with all the other awards based on the first-past-the-post reasons i just mentioned.
