Title: Xixax for all...?
Post by: kotte on October 09, 2003, 08:42:26 AM
Do you recommend Xixax to your friends and direct people from other forums here?

Or do feel kinda reserved about it, like 'it's yours'?

I referred one of my teachers to this site.  I'm proud and happy to introduce newcomers to the site.  I don't think he's registered yet.

I do kinda feel like it's "my secret site", but I read and write so much in here that i can't help but to reference it in conversations about film... like "there was this discussion a while back on xixax about this film, or that film"... and people are like "what the hell is sig-sat?"... so i end up telling them...

80% of my friends doesn't like movies

from 20% who does like, half does not speak english and other half hate PTA (so , i'm not gonna bring ppl as the "PTA is not that good" guy to here)

And i just realise my post reminds me a math problem...urgh!

An ant and a blind spider are on opposite corners of a cube. The ant is stationary and the spider moves at random from one corner to another along the edges only. What is the expected number of turns before the spider reaches the ant?

one

Actually, I know I'll probably get flamed for this but I'm still trying to figure out if I like this site.  I found it while looking for info on the XL1S, and that portion of the site seems to be ok, but the rest of the site seems to exist on a plane that I don't really relate to or that doesn't relate to me.  I'm not faulting anyone, but I'm not really into the shananigans, the gratuitiousness, the elitism, etc.  There seems to be a handful of really great discussion buried in a pile of...well let's just say things I'm not interested in.  I'm only being honest.

So, no.  Right now I wouldn't recommend it.  I've stuck around for a while just to see how my first impressions turned out.

Im answering with your answer:

I think it's kind of annoying when people bring their friends on and start doing these little inside jokes and faces like this

Yeah, that's lame, but I realize not everyone will do that (Sigur and Phil for instance)

Metroshane has some valid points. Thoughts like his go through my mind constantly. I always wonder how we can include more people (not seeming "elitist") while still having a good time amongst ourselves. I mean, let's face it. We're geeky about it, but some of the inside jokes here are pretty funny stuff.

I hope you hang out long enough to be come one of the clique, Metroshane. Then again, that's basically my wish for everyone here.

I got one friend to sign up. He hasn't posted. He's a major Kevin Smith fan and was trying to make his own low brow kind of comedy. A couple of friends and I were willing to commit so we planned to write and film a comedy. With this site, he just wanted to get into an environment to talk about movies and continue motivation of making the movie. Sad thing, he ended up moving away recently and the plan gone. I have recommended this site to a lot of people because I do think it is a healthy dose of all kind of talk in movies and prolly the best site for movie talk I've ever come across.

I don't know if this was in response to what I said, but I'll make it more clear

It's not the BOARD inside jokes that I think are lame, it's like when Reinhold said to Walrus, "don't go swimming in any more ponds" (btw, I know you were joking, it's just an example).  If it weren't a joke, it'd just fall flat and then Walrus (if it were serious) would respond with something like "well don't eat any more sushi" or whatever.  Anyway, I've seen it happen on other boards and I just thought it was lame.  That's what I meant

This question is almost impossible to answere but...

is XIXAX the most alive film forum/community on the net?

I believe so. Nowhere have I found a forum where people know each other as well as here.

ok, fine...here's the answer.

The answer is 10.

If the spider started at a corner diagonally on the same face as the ant the answer would be 9, and if the spider started at an adjacent corner the answer would be 7.

Here are answers for other figures:

Square: 4
Octahedron: 6
Dodecahedron: 35
Icosahedon: 15

Let x=number of turns to reach ant from starting point.
Let y=number of turns to reach ant from diagonal corner on same face as ant.
Let z=number of turns to reach ant from an adjacent corner to ant.

After one turn the spider will be on a diagonal corner of a common face as the ant. So the mean number of turns from the x position is one more than the mean number from the y position:

E(x)=1+E(y).

Once at a y position there is a 2/3 chance it will then move to a z position, and a 1/3 chance back to an x position:

E(y)=(2/3)*(1+E(z))+(1/3)*(1+E(x)).

If the spider arrives at a z position there is a 1/3 chance it will move to the ant, and a 2/3 chance it will move back to a y position:

E(z)=(1/3)*1+(2/3)*(1+E(y)).

With these three equations and three unknowns it is not difficult to solve for E(x), E(y), and E(z).

yeah... :) Had a couple of cool homo insults but you know how it is...still kinda touchy...

As a side note:
Do you know there are organisations working for a legalisation of pedophilia? They claim this is a sexual orientation as much as homosexuality.
As long as the child wants it and no abuse is involved, it should be legal.
Child pornography was legal in Sweden up 'till the 70s...before that you could rent films like 'The Dada-doer' etc...Crazy fucked up world.

Take it from me, every message board is going to have a pecking order of sorts.  It's inevitable.  Best way to keep everyone, including your own self, in check is to just respect everyone.  If everyone does that, there won't be a problem.

And I don't think I'd show this place to any of my friends, even film friends.  It's like an escape from well ... whatever else is going on.

There's also a group of people who wanna make it legal to marry and sleep with dogs. Awesome. Let the personal rights floodgates open...
