Five years ago it was a series he was developing for Showtime. He just posted that to his twitter account, not sure what form it will take now.

Paul Schrader's Bret Easton Ellis Penned Sexual Thriller 'The Canyons' To Shoot This Summer, Casting Underway
via The Playlist

Back in January, word cropped up that screenwriter/author Bret Easton Ellis and director Paul Schrader were cooking up a microbudget film together, an L.A. based noir. Ellis provocatively teased that the male lead "has to act and be full frontal naked banging girls and guys realistically" and he suggest porn star James Deen for one of the lead roles. Well, the Ellis has provided another update about the movie, tweeting today: "Shooting begins July 9th in Los Angeles..."

While exact plot details are being kept underwraps, The Playlist has learned that the film will follow a small group of Los Angeles of twenty-somethings, in a psycho-sexual thriller that will have both crime and redemption elements. As Ellis has suggested, both the male and female leads will have nudity as a requirement, but we're told it won't be employed salaciously. But perhaps the most intriguing element of the production is how the financing and distribution is being put together.  Ellis, Schrader and producer Braxton Pope are financing the picture, and while they have had some interest from the mini-majors around town, they plan to hang on to the project themselves so they can make it without any compromises. The picture will be shot digitally, with a VOD/Netflix style release planned.

As for who will star, casting has only just begun. There is already an open casting call for the five lead roles: Christian, a trust fund kid, power player and major manipulator, who is a film producer that enjoys filming his own three-way sex sessions; Tara, his girlfriend and former model; Ryan, a bartender and young actor who is angling for a role in Christian's horror movie; Gina, who works for Ryan and is in love with him and is also looking for a role in the horror pic and finally, Lindsay, a former actress turned yoga instructor who is sleeping with Christian, and falling in love with him.

As we said, casting is still very early and Deen has yet to meet with Schrader to talk about the film. Despite the seemingly pulp nature of the material, we're told it's very much an actor's piece and the filmmakers are looking for actors who can deliver.

Shooting on "The Canyons" will take place from July 9-31. Updates on the project can be found at the Facebook page.

Bret Easton Ellis Unveils 'The Canyons' Trailer Sans Lindsay Lohan (Video)
The promo for the writer's upcoming indie film is a montage of images from L.A.

Bret Easton Ellis has released the first trailer for his forthcoming indie film The Canyons.

Lindsay Lohan in Negotiations to Join Bret Easton Ellis' 'The Canyons'

Although Lindsay Lohan and adult film actor James Deen are attached to star, both are missing from the promo, which features a montage of images from Los Angeles such as the Hollywood sign and the legendary celebrity hangout Chateau Marmont. The soundtrack is the song "Coming Down" from the Dum Dum Girls, and the mood -- not to mention the West Coast imagery -- recalls the sleepy filler scenes from MTV's The Hills (a resemblance also noted by the Huffpo).

But this is not a reality show: it's an indie sexual thriller that adapts a script by the American Psycho author. As of last month, Lohan -- also set to star in the Lifetime biopic Liz & Dick -- was in talks to join Deen in the movie, which begins shooting this month with Paul Schrader in the director's seat. The movie recently closed its funding via Kickstarter.

Ellis tweeted Lohan's involvement in June, writing: "Shooting THE CANYONS starring James Deen and Lindsay Lohan: July 9-31 in L.A. Could not have dreamed of a better cast. Lindsay nailed it... ."

"After getting busted last week by the Santa Monica Promenade mall nazis for trying to go guerilla on their ass we tucked our collective tails between our legs and negotiated a price to return after which head female SM mall nazi said, in effect, Oops, sorry, there is no price because we don't like you. Thanks to the kindness of Rona of the Westside Century City Mall we were able to relocate there and using security and extras (yes we learned our lesson) shot the scene with Lindsay and wrapped the film."

I love Paul Schrader and I love Ellis....

But why cast Lindsay lohan?... That's just a waste of a character right there.

I enjoyed Lohan in "Bobby" (so underrated that movie) and she was OK in "A Prairie Home Companion" and funny in "Mean Girls", so I don't have a problem with her casting. Schrader will take good care of her.

So, this trailer is evidently some kind of joke... a pretty poorly made one though. Interesting choice to make everyone think your movie that already looks shitty looks shittier.

That was my first thought. If they were really making the film this way they wouldn't have used After Effect plug ins to do it.  It is clearly cheaply done in post. I'm sure they're just trying to convey this film is in the same vein as something like Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

Totally, it looks like an instagram filter. They should have shot on film if they wanted that look.

Like any movie BBE is associated with, I predict a lot of bad sex, cocaine, and at least one of the male characters will be bisexual.

Good lord -- from the article linked above:

Quote from: New York Times
If Schrader wasn't worried about Lohan's reputation, it might be because he is familiar with dysfunction. As a boy, his mother showed him what hell felt like by shoving a needle into his thumb. His father lobbied to prevent "The Last Temptation of Christ," a film his son wrote, from playing in their hometown, Grand Rapids, Mich. After his father died, Schrader found that he owned VHS tapes of all of his films, but none of them had been opened. In his 20s, Schrader slept with a gun under his pillow because he could fall asleep only if he knew there was a way out. Now he never travels without thousands of dollars in the currency of half a dozen countries.

Edit - This is hilarious:

Quote from: New York Times
A doctor arrived and took Lohan's blood pressure. He walked over to Pope and Schrader. His diagnosis: An inner-ear infection. She was done for the day. Schrader didn't buy it.

"That's her doctor, he'll say whatever she wants. I shot one day from a stretcher. She could do it, but she doesn't want to."

Pope and Schrader huddled with the production crew and thought of scenes they could shoot that day as a substitute. "What do we have left for James?" Schrader asked

There was awkward silence before a producer chimed in.

"Uh, I was driving by Burbank airport yesterday and I saw James pulling into the airport."

A call was placed. Deen admitted he was not in Los Angeles.

"Goddamn it," Schrader said. "He agreed not to shoot porn during the shoot. Now he's out of town making porn. I told him things could change; he had to stay in town. Now a whole day is wasted."

My favorite bit from the article is that after watching the rough cut, Steven Soderbergh offered to make his own cut of it if Schrader would give him access to the footage for 72 hours, which Schrader got offended by and refused.

The movie, I'm sure, will be shit, but I know in my heart of hearts that Soderbergh's cut would be AMAZING.

doesn't any of it sound too manipulated? I mean, the article did make sure to mention, over and over again, that everyone was amazing, and also didn't make Lohan sound like such a mess.

Yeah. Like the reporter was deep down just so excited to be hanging out with the movie folk.
Title: Re: The Canyons
Post by: RegularKarate on January 11, 2013, 10:52:16 AM
Oh, I absolutely believe that this was part of making people want to see this movie. The article even mentions that they said they wanted to make the process open to the public so that everyone could read blog posts and tweets about the production etc...

That's why they gave so much access to the reporter, they knew that the train-wreck aspect would attract people to the project.

I don't think that the article is super manipulated to make the movie look better... I think they just knew that having a big mess like Lohan on the set would result in enough crazy to get people interested. It didn't really matter how bad the movie or the actors come off, it would draw attention.

It's marketing, but it's smart. It fits the film.

IFC Films Picks Up Paul Schrader's 'The Canyons' For Summer Release
via The Playlist

IFC Films has snapped up the North American rights to the movie with a planned day-and-date theatrical/VOD release planned. Penned by Bret Easton Ellis, the film is described as a cross between "American Gigolo" and "American Psycho," exploring the dark side of Hollywood, in a story centered on a scheming and very wealthy movie producer Christian (pornstar James Deen) who makes movies to satisfy his father's demands that he maintain a viable career. Lindsay Lohan plays Tara, his girlfriend who's hiding an affair with an actor from her past.  Christian becomes more and more demanding, inviting various sex partners to join him and Tara in his luxurious Malibu Canyon lair.

Whether or not this news will make it more enticing for Deen to sign onto the porno version of the movie he's been offered by Vivid Entertainment remains to be seen. That would certainly be a meta-ending capper to the saga of the film. Now, after all the hype, audiences will be able to decide for themselves whether Schrader has managed to put together a compelling indie genre flick despite the documented difficulties.

IFC Films plans an early summer release for "The Canyons" in conjunction with a Special Presentation at the Film Society of Lincoln Center where the film will be screened and followed by a conversation with Schrader and Kent Jones, Director of Programming of the New York Film Festival.

The specter of poverty hovers over this world of lavish people, the sense that it's just around the corner. Is that part of the 2013-ness of it?

Yeah. This world of appearances, still believing in appearances, like still believing in movies when you don't believe in them anymore. But the option of not believing in appearances is too frightening. You don't believe in the thing you believe in, because you're afraid of not believing in it. And it means nothing. It's not like believing in God because you're afraid of not believing in God.
