it's crazy.  change is so weird.  i like the new logo and like that the avatar sizes dont change the size of your window width (like on teh temp version a few months ago), but itll take getting used to.  its harder to see which topics are new, because of hte dots, and not a different color, (which is more readable.)  and the banners w/ill be cool when they come.  uhhh, thats all.

I see 'Donations' has been added to the top.  I hope this isn't a precursor to a closing-up-of-shop (as has been with other places I've visited in the past).  There's nothing I would like more than to throw the site some bling, but sadly, there's not enough bling to go around these days.

With a donation would I receive special treatment?

Site looks really good. you guys did a great job with it. Very easy on the eyes and refreshing, dont clutter the top too much and make sure that it stays in theme.

Here's the complete story.

Last week, I announced to the admins that my passion for Xixax was failing. Not because of anyone here, mind you. It's just that my interests (as they so often do) are beginning to really refocus and I'm not into the film scene as much as I once was.

When you compound that with the fact that I'm generally unable to dedicate enough time to the site in areas that need attention, I decided that rather than do a half-ass job of running a movie forum, I'd turn the lights out.

I offered the site to each of the administrators. If any of them wanted to assume the financial responsibilities of the site, they could have it. When I was asked "how much does it cost to run Xixax?" I did a little math and figured that my company donates the "retail equivalent" of about $200 per month on bandwidth alone. When you add the hosting trades that we do with the sites we advertise on, the figure comes to more like $400 per month.

Granted, that's not our COST - it's what we'd charge someone off the street for everything associated with the site (including several gigs in the download areas, and yes, we had a hidden archive of the C&C boards online in here before, too).

I then figured our hard costs of running the site. Which was still more than any one admin could shell out.

We put our heads together, and decided that we could run the site much more affordably if we got rid of some of the bandwidth and storage hogging forums like Feature Presentation. And, with that, we were able to pare down Mad Dancer's cost on running the site to something more along the lines of about $25 per month. That's not our profit, mind you. That's what it costs us to run.

The admins decided that they could all shell out a few bucks each month to keep the lights turned on at Xixax after I step out of the picture. But, I really didn't want them to have to do it all themselves so I begged them to allow me (as my last act as head honcho) to open up a donations area where everyone could share the burden of the site breaking even.

So, that's where it stands. The goal is $25 per month. Not unreachable by any means. And, it'll all be collected via paypal.

If Xixax doesn't meet the $25 per month goal will I still shut it down? Probably not. But if there are no substantial donations from the site over a couple of months, then I might let a couple of the admins know that things are slow so they can cattle-prod you all for some assistance.

As I've told the other admins, this isn't about money. It's really about my passions moving elsewhere. I don't want to let the site just sit here and cost my company money each month, but if it can just pay for itself at the very least, then its future will be secure. Plus, I'm considering everything on the hosting end at cost - no markups.

So that's the story. After the transition is complete, the admins here will have collective say on everything. There will no longer be anyone able to veto or push through suggestions. I'm relinquishing ALL control of the site to the admins currently in power.

Long story short, I'm not going away mad, I'm just going away.

Plus, since goatse.cx has been taken off line, this place just isn't any fun anymore.

I will work on the donations page this week. In the meantime, if anyone wants to donate a few bucks now to kick things off in this new era, you can paypal cash (US Dollars) to paypal@maddancer.com.

$25 pays for a month!

Hmmm....the diamond is dark when new posts are in the thread (https://xixax.com/templates/xixax/images/folder_new.gif) as opposed to the light blue when there are none (https://xixax.com/templates/xixax/images/folder.gif). Are they not dark enough to notice?

I would have, but luckily for me I had a meeting to go to, and the good ol' 'xax returned by the time I did.

And as for the dots, I too kinda wish they were brighter.  If they lit up something like orange for new posts, they'd be fine.  Blue and orange are complementary colors.

About the loss of the Feature Presentations forum, why not leave the forum open but require people to host their films to have them shown?  I think it's important that we keep that avenue open, even if we can't host those films.

I wish there was something I could do to help as far as hosting goes, but I'm sure we'll be able to meet the $25/month goal if everyone chips in a quarter, or a half-dollar, or so.

If you want to cut down on bandwidth how about an limit to the avatar size you will host, and less movie scene banners... I dont know if that will help much, but every bit counts
Title: The New Format
Post by: ono on February 09, 2004, 06:21:01 PM
Yes, that would be nice.  There is a way to prevent images of a certain size and dimensions from being uploaded, and I'm almost sure there's a way to prevent uploading of animated gifs.  I think that would be a bit easier on the eyes and on the bandwidth.

Text is the least of concerns where bandwidth is an issue.  Bandwidth consumed by text is too small to have any real effect.  Linking to huge articles is sometimes an option, but there are times when pasting is more appropriate, especially when one couldn't normally access the article, or it's rather brief.  At least, in my opinion.

True that.  But here's the thing.  My computer is pretty simple, but I've set up a web server on it.  Thing is, I'm convinced anyone can learn to set up a basic web server, too, allowing them to make files available from their own computers (and this gets rid of the problem of not being able to find a host).  There are minor security concerns to be aware of, and it will make your Internet connection slower when people are downloading from you, and it works best with a persistent connection with a static IP address, but hey, it's better than nothing.

I like the new look and change is good in most cases. Bandwidth problems could be addressed by sending out a PM to let everyone know not to duplicate pix in replies, etc. and give some other examples as well. But I am sure the admins will help to reduce the b/w in the forums.

I'm willing to shell out 25 even though I've been laid off for over a year now. But I'd rather not sign up for PayPal and use them as a transaction. How about possibly accepting checks or money orders?

there is no connection between the number of different banners and bandwidth

you could have had several thousand different banners and it would have taken up the same amount of bandwidth, just more space.

Ill let you predict when it will happen.  Just watch one of the outer holes in the reel.. and follow it arround with your eyes and when it freezes for 1 frame, remember that location.. It will freeze when its in that position forever.

2.  I don't always complain, I just know what the problem is, and I know what the solution is.  Why would I not tell anyone? I wasn't condecending. TEAMWORK PEOPLE.

He's right.  I see it, too.  Upper right hand corner.  Just watch that corner than follow it around when it catches.  It hangs up for a second at that spot each time.  Just saying.

Here's a suggestion: have the names of the films in question on the marquee on the right.  What you do is put XIXAX.COM (MMIV) all on the second line, then you can usually squeeze the title in on the top.  Also, what'cha think about changing "those who make movies" to "filmmakers."  Kinda makes sense, doesn't it?  Unless, of course, you're trying to include people like cinematographers, and editors, and all that jazz.

Oh, and the whole old-timey movie theatre feel at the top is inspired.  Nice job.

The text is temporary and can be changed or rotated. The caps on the left will be rotated. But they can't be rotated together. It'll work... you'll see.
Title: The New Format
Post by: Xixax on February 12, 2004, 09:44:18 PM
Also (and I forgot to mention this to the other admins), we should start a new naming convention on the caps. The actual filename of the screen cap should be the title of the movie. The end user won't be able to tell the filename because of the rotation code that drives them, but we as admins will know. Maybe someone can start a new thread with direct links or something (likewe did before).

God knows I couldn't name half of the popcorn banner ones because they were never identified.

If you would like to make your own caps and submit them for immediate rotation, you can download the caps template here:

http://xixax.com/files/caps.zip

If you want to place something in the right hand side of the marquee, the template for that can be found here:

http://xixax.com/files/marquee.zip

Check with one of the other admins (not me) on how to deliver your caps so they can upload them.

We had over 500 popcorn banners before. Let's rebuild!

Title: Re: The New Format
Post by: Xixax on November 04, 2005, 10:47:03 PM
Hi, guys. Long time no speak.

The unread topics thing will fix itself after you've logged in a few times. The new system probably just wasn't able to convert all the pointers from before.

Lots of reasons why we did the change to this system. There are way more features built into this system that you'll like, but the main thing is that the previous software was a security nightmare. This software has a really great security record, so the conversion will ensure a stable, bright future for Xixax.

Hope you guys like. I can see that a lot of folks are going to be re-sizing their avatars to smaller images in the near future, which was probably long long overdue anyway. Nothing like waiting for 50 huge avs to load when you're reading a forum!

I remember when we switched from yabbse on the old old C&C boards to the new ones on Xixax, everyone was sad because the new board was "different".

We're creatures of habit. Change is bad when we're content with something.

It's like complaining that we miss our '79 Chevy Impala because our new 2006 Lexus has a smaller trunk. In the end, you're gonna want the Lexus.

Changes continue to be made, and tweaks will be abundant in the coming weeks, but trust me. You'll be happier in the long run.

On an apples-to-apples comparison, I can't believe that ANYONE would actually prefer phpbb to smf.

plus, it seems to be just like any other message board now.

There are so many buttons, most of which are very unecessary.  The older version had more than what we needed (and plenty of extra smilies), this has so many options that it's a cluttered mess on the page.  If you want smaller avatars, request that, but the avatar scrollbars looks odd.  Karma appears to be something only admins can give (or at least in my past experience with it on other boards).

EDIT: AAAH!  And now, ten minutes later, my avatar is gone again!  Damn you, SMF 1.0.5!!!

Crazy Crazy...

Problem I have is that I always click the "Show unread posts since last visit" and it doesnt seem to be working... yet?

We'll get used to it eventually
Title: Re: The New Format

We know how to fix the avatar scroll problem, and that should be done relatively soon. The avatar uploading problem, however, is a little tricker. All should be fixed, though, eventually...

On that positive note, I think the clutter issue will disappear as we become more desensitized to everything. I remember a certain visual trauma immediately following new formats... it's normal, and temporary. It certainly looks like clutter, but is it really? You can login, search, view news and stats all at the top. We're not used to that.

That said, I'm also not a big fan of the grey.

Clarification about the posts read system:

Quote from: Xixax
The new topics works completely different on this system than PHPBB.

In PHPBB, it only looked at the time of your last visit and calculated which areas you had entered and looked at, then deduced (according to whether you entered that section or not) whether you "read" the messages or not.

In other words, with the old board, if you went into a message area and then left again without reading anything, it assumed that you had read all the messages.

SMF actually keeps track instead of trying to guess at what you might and might not have read. As an initial thing, you'll need to go to the "mark all as read" button, which is on the main index just above the Info Center. From then on, you'll see the "new" graphic next to new posts. And if any new messages have been added to a message area since last reading a message in that area, the indicator on the home page will show it.

notes on changes to PMs.

The board does not feature the function to edit a PM before it is received, it only has Inbox and Outbox, whereas before you also had Sentbox. you will hav to click a box at the bottom of every PM you send if you wish to save it in your Outbox.

Alternatively.. if you go to your profile and select "Personal Message Options" there is an option to " Save a copy of each Personal Message in my outbox by default."

I don't know if this has to do with the new system, but:
I just got an e-mail giving me a new account.  It said my new name was the account name for my dvdafficianado stuff and I don't know why.  I didn't try to set up a new account or anything.  It was really weird.

this may happent to others here, i suspect that if u log out of ur current profile and click the profile link the email provided, it will say that user does not exist. ignore this, it is due to a new feature we implemented. it is possible this was another account u created at one point?

i know it seems annoying right now but i do believe everything will work itself out very soon. i was worried during the weekend when only like 8 topics were active, but activity seems to be normal again today.

  • if you get bored with all the information in the header, at the top of your page -- ie. User Info, News Box, Key Stats, Quick search bar -- you can minimize the whole section by clicking the upshrink button (https://xixax.com/Themes/default/images/upshrink.gif) located just under where it says 'Search'. It can be reversed just as easily.

I'm thinking the scrollbar is perhaps a option you can turn on and off in your preferences?  Because I, like Walrus, just got fucked up margins when you posted the longass link, no scrollbar.

yes, remember to Mark As Read on the main page (unless u want to go individually forum by forum). this marks the whole board and effectively resets ur shit.

if "Show unread posts since last visit" doesn't give u what u want, "ALL Unread Topics" at the bottom right of that page should never fail.

i've noticed that if you leave yourself logged in forever, and never log out, when you come back to the site after viewing Unread Posts Since Last Visits once already, nothing will appear. this is because you are still counted as being in the same visit. unread posts you didn't check out before closing the window wiill then only appear in Show ALL Unread Posts. maybe that's what you ppl are getting.

So I don't know if anyone else is aware of this, but there's a weird bug where when you reach a certain number of PMs (say, a multiple of how many appear per page), then the last one you've received won't show up.

Also, a gift for Xixax, a PHP script (http://files.onomatopoeia.biz/viewtopic.php.txt) I wrote that'll fix some of the dead links.  Just remove the ".txt" part of the file name and upload it to the proper place (the location of the old thread script) and it'll redirect to the right thread.  Need any help with it, PM me.  If I knew more of how the database works, I could fix the rest of 'em (the ones that target a specific post in a thread -- still working on it).

yeah basically the second post (from memory) of any new page in your inbox won't show up.. until you receive a new message. so if you see that you have a new message but it doesn't show when you click on it, the easy solution is to send yourself a PM. this will bring up the lost PM.

Just a word for anyone: xixax has been flooded with a lot of spam accounts over the last few months, which makes our activation process very strict. So if you have a friend or someone you can vouch for, just PM one of the admins and let us know their username and we'll okay 'em.

I have a friend who's trying to activate... username is Chpv1agra.. email is KVxaxdfghas@SweetRussianPornHoles.rus
