Stiller waters run 'Deep'
Source: Hollywood Reporter

DreamWorks and Red Hour are teaming on the comedy "In Deep" as a potential starring vehicle for Ben Stiller. Mark Romanek is attached to direct the project, which is based on an original screenplay by George Beckerman.

Steve Conrad ("The Pursuit of Happyness") has been tapped to do a Page One rewrite/reconceive of Beckerman's screenplay, which chronicles the nightmarish tale of a man who fights a parking ticket and becomes increasingly enmeshed in criminal allegations. Sources peg Conrad's deal at $1.6 million against $2.5 million.

Beckerman's screenplay had been in development in the late 1980s at Management Company Entertainment Group, which filed for bankruptcy in 1990.

Red Hour's Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld are producing "In Deep," and Robert Weide and Romanek are executive producing.

DreamWorks' Jeremy Kramer is overseeing the project for president of production Adam Goodman.

Mark Romanek to Adapt Never Let Me Go
Source: Slash Film

Mark Romanek has signed on to direct a big screen adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's novel Never Let Me Go. According to Production Weekly, Beach author and 28 Days Later/Sunshine screenwriter Alex Garland penned the adaptation.

Romanek is probably best known for his music video work. He directed the video for Michael and Janet Jackson's "Scream" in 1995, a sci-fi themed video which won the 1996 Grammy for Best Music Video, and to date, is still the most expensive music video ever produced ($7 million). His other videos include Closer for Nine Inch Nails, Criminal for Fiona Apple, Devil's Haircut for Beck, and Johnny Cash's cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt".

In 2002, he made a wonderful indie thriller called One Hour Photo, which starred Robin Williams as an photo lab employee who becomes obsessed with a young suburban family (if you haven't seen it, netflix it!). Romanek was originally attached to dieect The Wolf Man for Universal but dropped out for undisclosed reasons. The official book description follows:

"From the acclaimed author of The Remains of the Day and When We Were Orphans, a moving new novel that subtly reimagines our world and time in a haunting story of friendship and love. As a child, Kathy–now thirty-one years old–lived at Hailsham, a private school in the scenic English countryside where the children were sheltered from the outside world, brought up to believe that they were special and that their well-being was crucial not only for themselves but for the society they would eventually enter. Kathy had long ago put this idyllic past behind her, but when two of her Hailsham friends come back into her life, she stops resisting the pull of memory. And so, as her friendship with Ruth is rekindled, and as the feelings that long ago fueled her adolescent crush on Tommy begin to deepen into love, Kathy recalls their years at Hailsham. She describes happy scenes of boys and girls growing up together, unperturbed–even comforted–by their isolation. But she describes other scenes as well: of discord and misunderstanding that hint at a dark secret behind Hailsham's nurturing facade. With the dawning clarity of hindsight, the three friends are compelled to face the truth about their childhood–and about their lives now. A tale of deceptive simplicity, Never Let Me Go slowly reveals an extraordinary emotional depth and resonance–and takes its place among Kazuo Ishiguro's finest work."

The book was named one of TIME's 100 Best Novels (from 1923 to the Present), featured on many top ten books of 2005 lists, and a finalist in the National Book Critic Circle Award.

Good for him. I'm glad he's getting shit going. I was worried he'd have trouble after departing from Wolfman.

Rampling, Hawkings in 'Never' land
Keira Knightley stars in Romanek film
Source: Variety

Charlotte Rampling and Sally Hawkins have signed on to co-star in the Keira Knightley starrer "Never Let Me Go" for Fox Searchlight and Film4.

Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield already boarded the Mark Romanek-helmed pic, which is based on a 2005 Kazuo Ishiguro novel. Nathalie Richard and Andrea Riseborough round out the cast.

Lensing began Tuesday in the U.K.

Alex Garland ("28 Days Later") adapted the screenplay, which revolves around a trio (Knightley, Mulligan and Garfield) who, as children, spend their childhood at a seemingly idyllic English boarding school. As they grow into young adults, they find that they have to prepare themselves for the haunting reality that awaits them.

Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich are producing for DNA Films, where the project was developed. Romanek and Garland are exec producing.

Rampling recently played Lady Spencer opposite Knightley in period drama "The Duchess."

Hawkins drew critical raves for her comedic turn in Mike Leigh's "Happy-Go-Lucky."

Disney Courting Mark Romanek To Direct Re-Imagined 'Cinderella'
BY MIKE FLEMING Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: Disney is trying to fit the glass slipper on Mark Romanek. The studio is circling Romanek, the accomplished video director and helmer of the features Never Let Me Go and One Hour Photo, to steer a new version of Cinderella, based on the pitch that The Devil Wears Prada scribe Aline Brosh McKenna sold to Disney last year in a seven-figure deal.

The studio bought that project after its billion-dollar grossing 3D Alice in Wonderland opened the floodgates on movies based on public domain fairy tales. Simon Kinberg is producing, and insiders describe Brosh McKenna's script as the re-imaging of the classic tale where the prince is set for a politically arranged marriage, until the evil plan is threatened when the prince meets Cinderella. No deal yet, but it's moving toward one and the picture is a priority for the studio.

'The Shining' Prequel to Be Directed by Mark Romanek (EXCLUSIVE)
Source: Variety

Mark Romanek is in negotiations to helm Warner Bros.' "Overlook Hotel," a prequel to the Stanley Kubrick classic "The Shining."

Former "Walking Dead" showrunner Glen Mazzara recently turned in his draft for the original story, with Mythology's Brad Fischer, James Vanderbilt and Laeta Kalogridis producing.

Based on Stephen King's original prologue to "The Shining," which was cut from the book prior to publication in 1977, the film will tell the origin story of the Overlook Hotel through the eyes of its first owner, Bob T. Watson. A robber baron at the turn of the 20th century, Watson scaled the remote peaks of the Colorado Rockies to build the grandest resort in America, and a place he and his family would also call home

Starring Jack Nicholson, the original "Shining" revolved around a writer who takes his family to an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil presence influences him to commit violent acts, while his psychic son sees horrific visions of the past and future.

Though ABC had King's blessing to make a 1997 miniseries remake starring Steven Weber, studios have been cautious about doing justice to a film that has come to be seen as one of the top horror films of all time.

In 2013, King published a "Shining" sequel "Dr. Sleep," which Warners is also trying to get off the ground.

Romanek is also attached to direct "Boston Strangler" for the studio starring Casey Affleck and last directed the Fox Searchlight pic "Never Let Me Go."
