David Lynch to exhibit artwork for latest Danger Mouse album
Source: Los Angeles Times

Few Hollywood directors crisscross the line between movies and visual art as regularly as David Lynch. (Was it just us or did "Inland Empire" deserve to be shown in a gallery?) The filmmaker has exhibited his paintings and strange photographs in cities all over the world, including Paris, Moscow and most recently at Art Basel Miami Beach.

For his latest project, the famously enigmatic cineaste will be showing original artwork he created for the upcoming album "Dark Night of the Soul," featuring music by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse.

The exhibition, opening May 30 at Michael Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles, will consist of a two-room installation designed by Lynch and Danger Mouse that will allow visitors to experience the artwork and music at the same time.

Lynch is planning to mount some 50 of the photographs he created for the album on aluminum panels positioned around the gallery. Selections from the album (which will be released this summer) will play throughout the installation.

The director's photographs will also be published in a book to be released along with the album. If his photos are anything like his movies, we can expect a lot of mysterious blonds, red curtains, eccentric dwarfs and references to small-town American life.

David Lynch, Iggy Pop, Gruff Rhys, members of the Strokes, the Shins, the Flaming Lips and Pixies will contribute to the next album by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse.

Mark Linkous, the American singer-songwriter who mutters and murmurs as Sparklehorse, was last heard in 2006, on an album produced by Danger Mouse. And though neither Linkous nor Danger Mouse have announced it on their websites, their MySpace pages, in press releases or tweets, they seem to have made something new. And it sounds ... well it sounds mysterious.

Earlier this week, several journalists and bloggers received a poster in the mail: "Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse present ... DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL". And then there's the word "Featuring" and a whole lot of names.

Take a deep breath: Black Francis aka Pixies' Frank Black, the Strokes' Julian Casablancas, Vic Chesnutt, the Flaming Lips, Grandaddy's Jason Lytle, the Shins' James Mercer, the Cardigans' Nina Persson, Iggy Pop, Super Furry Animals' Gruff Rhys, and Suzanne Vega.

Oh yes, and "Visuals by David Lynch".

The poster promises an album in summer 2009 and that's all we know; a mystery wrapped in an enigma wrapped in an international advertising campaign.

Certainly both Sparklehorse and Danger Mouse are well connected. On 2006's Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain, there were contributions from both Tom Waits and the Flaming Lips' Steven Drozd. And since breaking through with The Grey Album, Danger Mouse has worked with everyone from Beck to Gnarls Barkley and Gorillaz.

Of course, it's one thing to have Julian Casablancas drawl a few lyrics, and another to have one of the world's eeriest film auteurs collaborate with visuals. David Lynch has rarely worked with any musicians besides composer Angelo Badalamenti, and although it's still unclear what he's done for Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse, from designing album artwork to shooting a film, he's not exactly known for gallivanting with indie mumblers.

Then again, perhaps Dark Night of the Soul isn't just an album. Perhaps it's a hotel on a mysterious road that only appears on Friday the 13th, with a casino room where your subconscious mind plays roulette against Iggy Pop and members of the Shins and .. well all right, it's probably just an album. guardian

Dark Night of the Soul Lynch Exhibit Press Release

Los Angeles, CA (May 4, 2009)–Iconoclastic filmmaker David Lynch and music visionary Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) are collaborating on their first ever project and installation, Dark Night of the Soul, on view at the Michael Kohn Gallery from May 30 through July 11, 2009.

For their premiere collaboration, David Lynch and Danger Mouse have designed a two-room installation at Michael Kohn Gallery capitalizing on the interplay between the music from Danger Mouse's and Sparklehorse's album Dark Night of the Soul and the artwork David Lynch created for the album, allowing the mediums of art and music to complement one another. Fifty of Lynch's photographs are mounted on aluminum panels that seem to float on the gallery walls, reinforcing the moody rhythms of the music from Dark Night of the Soul that will play throughout the gallery. The installation encourages a fully enveloping experience that surpasses the individual visual or auditory elements.

Dark Night of the Soul began when Danger Mouse, who has been a fan of Lynch's for many years, approached the filmmaker about a possible project. The artists worked together and were inspired by each other— Lynch making photographs influenced by the original songs that Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse were creating. The result is Dark Night of the Soul, Danger Mouse's first-ever gallery installation, and David Lynch's first exhibition at Michael Kohn Gallery in nearly 15 years. (The first was in 1995, titled One through Ten, and featured photographs and drawings by the artist.) Lynch's most recent installation, Diamonds, Gold and Dreams, was on view in the Cartier Dome at Art Basel Miami Beach in December 2008.

Dark Night of the Soul is also the title of a full-length album and illustrated book ($50, published by powerHouse) combining the talents of Danger Mouse, David Lynch and celebrated rock recluse Sparklehorse. In addition to the 100+ page book of David Lynch's original photographs, the album features artists such artists as the Flaming Lips, Iggy Pop, Frank Black, James Mercer (The Shins), Julian Casablancas (The Strokes) and Suzanne Vega, among many others. For more information on works by David Lynch, please contact Michael Kohn Gallery. For more information on Dark Night of the Soul and the illustrated book, visit www.dnots.com.

Lynch puts a lot of shit on top of his vocals.
Are there any recordings or live videos of him singing unadorned by effects, etc.?
