Title: Lynch's short films
Post by: Pastor Parsley on November 06, 2003, 11:51:32 AM
I got home late last night, after a long day, to find a box sitting on my doorstep marked Davidlynch.com.  YES!  The short films dvd I ordered was here.

There are six shorts plus a tv calibration program included on the dvd.  Before each short, lynch talks about how each film came to be.  The first film is Six Men Getting Sick, followed by The Alphabet, The Grandmother, The Amputee, The Cowboy and the Frenchman, and his Lumiere bit.

I had seen Six Men and Lumiere before.  Six Men is kinda cool, but it's only about 10 seconds long.  Lumiere is probably one of my favorites from the dvd it's about 20 seconds long.  The alphabet is good , I really liked it, it's pretty short too, at 4 minutes.  The Grandmother is fairly long (30 mins)and is very cool and trippy.  The Amputee is about 5 minutes..it's kinda funny but not great.  The Cowboy and the Frenchman is another long one (25 min), it was really funny and entertaining, but not one I'd watch too many times.

Although I'll definitely watch them all a bunch of times, the ones that are really worth watching over and over are The Alphabet, The Grandmother, and Lumiere.  At 34 minutes for these three favorites of mine, $40 is pretty steep.

Would I buy it again after seeing them all?  Definitely.  In my opinion, it's not worth $40, but I love all of Lynch's stuff and there isn't much (well never enough...anyway) material out there by him.  So if you really love his work....you gotta get this one.  If he's not one of your favorite filmmakers...it's probably not for you.

There's also a booth and phone number hidden on the dvd as well.

the alphabet is so fucking great, it gives me the creeps everytime. the amputee was just weird  just like that darkened room short he did, that was so fucked up too.

Well wasn't it just to try out those 2 types of tape stock? I thought that bit was just about wasting tape.

The Alphabet is definitely the best, creepy shit. The Grandmother is interesting and the animation is really great, the way he shows the insemination and all that. The Lumiere bit didn't make any sense, it was like he ran out of film just as he was about to do something, and wasn't there like 5 seconds of nothing in the middle of it? Pretty crappy. Six Men Getting Sick was longer than 10 seconds, at least it felt that way. The Cowboy and the Frenchman is hilarious, isn't it weird that Harry Dean Stanton was in this and in Paris, Texas? 'Cause of the juxtaposition, it's funny to me.

Anyway, I saw all these shorts with an audience of supposed film afficionados and I was the only one not asleep by the end of it. Maybe he'd do better with those internet shorts, Rabbits and what not.

i don't really remember much of the comboy and the frenchman and the lumiere thing cos i was really high and really wasted when i saw this. by the fifth or so repeatiation of the six men getting sick animation i thought i wouldn't be able to sit through it all and by the alphabet i thought i was gonna die. in a nice way though.

Yeah, it's 10 seconds repeated 6 times, The full title is 'Six Men Getting Sick (Six Times)'

Lynch says in the intro that one of his film professors was supposed to test two types of video stock. He was in the middle of filming Eraserhead and had run out of money and was depressed because he had to put it on hold.  He asked if he could test the tape and wrote up a bit that night and filmed it the next day.  It's pretty much, like you said, just using up the tape...not an impressive film.  It is kinda funny and a little gross.  He's snipping off the bandages on her newly amputated legs and it begins squirting pus everywhere like some Monty Python gag.  The whole time she doesn't even notice, totally engrossed in the letter that she's writing.  It was particularly gross because I was eating warm oatmeal at the time.  Pus and oatmeal just don't mix. :?

Can you order stuff from Lynch's site if you aren't a member?

I think that was the dumbest question I've ever asked. And yes you can. I ignored my impatience and figured out how to get into the store. You click store.

Thank you.

I've never had a problem ordering anything from Lynch's store, fear not.  My only gripe is that the shipping charges are outrageous, but then once you have a nice black box with 'David Lynch' written on it show up at your door, all anger instantly subsides.

Q for everyone, is it me, or does 'Frenchman' seem slightly out of sync?

I hated 'six men' and alphabet. Why are people calling these a work of a true genius? Beacuse we know who he is? Why?

If I would've made six men no one would've called it genius.

Knowing that Lynch did them does not make them better in my opinion, but it does give you the benefit of watching them knowing what came from the same mind afterwards.

Six Men Getting Sick is a brilliant mixed media piece of sculpture...watching the film, it helps if you imagine you're seeing it live. If I had seen that in a gallery without knowing who did it, I would have flipped out and stared at it for about an hour.

The Alphabet...again, if I saw that in a film festival without knowing who did it, I'd be pretty impressed. It's completely rough around the edges, but in a good way, and it's creepy as hell. But if it ain't your cup of tea, there's nothing wrong with that.

Trentemoller "Moan"s, Seances With Lynch, Pynchon
Source: Pitchfork Media

What happens when Trentemøller, David Lynch, and Thomas Pynchon get together? They have a seance, apparently. On January 25, Trentemøller provided a live soundtrack to Eyerophany, an abstract David Lynch film.

This event was "a séance without spirits calling for the apparition and the impossible act of seeing with the Mystery Eye," according to the website for the Netmage Festival in Bologna, Italy, where the thing took place. (No, we have no idea what they're talking about either.) And that's not even mentioning the "shortcircuits with Thomas Pynchon" part of the night. We thought that guy never left the house!

Those of us who weren't able to attend the séance of the century can console ourselves with Trentemøller's "Moan", the second single from The Last Resort. The single will come out digitally and in two separate vinyl editions on March 6.

Forgoing the original "Moan", the Danish Music Award-nominated producer remixed the track for these releases. The first 12" features remixes of the vocal version, with Trentemøller's own remix on the A-side and a Radio Slave remix on the flip. The second 12" is instrumental, featuring Trentemøller's dub remix on the A-side and the instrumental version of the Radio Slave remix on the B. Poker Flat will release them both.

Danish director Niels Gråbøl is currently shooting a video for "Moan" on location in Russia and Denmark. It will be available in mid-March.

Trentemøller will be on tour with his live band as well as partner DJ T.O.M. throughout Europe in the coming months. For a preview of the full band experience, check out a video of a live performance of "Moan" below, and get out the Ouija board.

It was 30 minutes, but I could have watched him building that lamp for 30 hours. Worth watching for Lynch being himself; before he even starts off the process, he must have a cup of coffee; while materials dry, it's the "perfect time for a smoke break."

New Lynch Short Film for 42 Below
42 Below, the vodka brand from New Zealand is the creative sponsor of One Dream Rush, a very short film festival based in Beijing, China. 42 films from around the world were chosen from a competition in which film makers were given 42 seconds on the dream theme. Below is Lynch's film from the competition.

New Lynch Short Film for 42 Below

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1W7wbaU-2s

ok that was a piece of shit. Lynch needs to shut the hell up big time. link's dead so here's a youtube channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/OneDreamRush) with 8 other 42-second shorts from the same festival, including such freaks as Asia Argento and Kenneth Anger (still alive??).

my favourite, and the only good thing that came out of this otherwise total waste of time, was "Last Day Dream" by Chris Milk, i recommend you watch it and digest it yourself first cos i'm about to talk about it and digest it for you:

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi5.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy154%2Fpubrick%2Fvidcaps%2F42short%2FImage2.jpg&hash=ddc1f8c4230d81ecdf79eba1a050298e60ac9708)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hozuUrgQ52s

Milky, if you didn't know, has directed videos like Kanye's Touch the Sky and Gnarls Barkley's Who's Gonna Save My Soul. here he seems to be the only one who made any effort to come up with something interesting. i love it cos EVERY SHOT WORKS. it's the kind of cool gimmick you'd usually only see used in an exploitative format like a commercial. even the technical details are interesting, he shot it on a Canon 5D Mark II SLR camera, which goes perfectly (and still gimmickily) with the snapshot aesthetic.. but what's impressive here is the rhythm, he makes this kind of easy IDEA look easy to DO.

fact is if you can't tell a story as effectively and concisely as these three shots did, you should either admit you are kevin smith and/or stop making movies:

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi5.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy154%2Fpubrick%2Fvidcaps%2F42short%2FImage7.jpg&hash=8dce0c76bc66b7c504c2618d0703e8f1aefb31f1)(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi5.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy154%2Fpubrick%2Fvidcaps%2F42short%2FImage8.jpg&hash=21fdd2035b2a6a87b1c78ca9897a3cb61ae6bdfe)(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi5.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy154%2Fpubrick%2Fvidcaps%2F42short%2FImage11.jpg&hash=44d47093c16aab22a6f32045da84c72706c9920b)

i also like the title, it has at least 3 possible meanings all of which are satisfied by the film itself. Last Day Dream:

1. it could be the last dream of a life, so the dreamer in this case is the POV in the last shot and each beat - obviously like a heartbeat - is the approach towards his very final moments of life.

2. it's a dream about what it would be like to HAVE a final dream. this makes the dreamer the filmmaker (and us as spectators) who is currently not dying (presumably) and is just imagining what it would be like have a LAST DAY. so it's a dream about a last day.

3. or a combination of the two: the dreamer is still in the story, but it's not the filmmaker or the spectator, it's the person in this shot:
(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi5.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy154%2Fpubrick%2Fvidcaps%2F42short%2FImage16.jpg&hash=7ab98502b4b88c9797a22f46c0a8678442010dde)
and every shot after it is the idyllic life he never got to live after this accident. this could be supported by the sweetness of everything that follows this shot. the white gown is angelic and it is followed by a repetitive sequence of children (angels) and more serene kind of imagery. even the death of his wife seems to take place after a toast in paradise.. and the waves hitting his feet are just a final incrementation of the recurring lull into death but ALSO a self-contained encapsulation of an eternity already at his feet, he's above death, this makes anything after it a kind of rebirth.. which becomes clear when the final shot is a repetition of the first:

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi5.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy154%2Fpubrick%2Fvidcaps%2F42short%2FImage26.jpg&hash=6b4e351e91c633e42a2b8007a18e58230a9507f9)

the crash shot occurs almost at the centre of the 23 images that make up the short, so it's definitely a turning point. but the actual middle spot of the short is taken by the image before the crash, which is this:

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi5.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy154%2Fpubrick%2Fvidcaps%2F42short%2FImage15.jpg&hash=6189d31414ecbe19b882ccdeb9c4b78c6138249d)

as Stefen and RK have recently attested, to be emotionally attached to animals is a profound experience, and this quick little shot before the crash packs a lot of information. it's the only non human attachment made in his life, it doesn't show any obvious action to give it any forced emotional response like the grasping of his thumb by the tiny baby finger, or the unveiling of his wife, or the smile of the kid on the swings.. it's just a dog standing at attention and looking loyally at him.

it would be a really interesting exercise to see how other filmmakers could put a life in 42 seconds, this isn't the only way, but at least it has a self-contained logic and rewards at least one rewatching. the other filmmakers seem to have only showed what it's like to put 42 seconds of thought into a film and pass it off as "something".

It's beautiful and perfect and so simple it makes you wonder why nobody else has ever done it that well.

To me it's your life flashing before your eyes and broken down into the most meaningful moments, good and bad. In that last moment, something so minute and at the time, meaningless, may end up being one of your most cherished memories.

The best part is how it gets faster at the end. That's exactly how life is. I don't think anyone here can deny how the older you get, the faster your life happens.

thanks p. i love the car crash theory. if they cut to it twice i would buy it as intentional.

a life in 42 seconds... sounds like a much better xixax contest than that other one.

edit: watching it a second time you are right. those scenes are idillic in an otherworldy sense.. however i propose a COUNTER THEORY: the moments after the car crash are simply taking place in the future, where everything is shinier/better. because his parents seem to be from the 70s based solely on those sunglasses. if not present day. so he could very well be dying in 2050+
Title: Re: Lynch's short films

I love this too.  My theory is that the car crash forces him to grow up and re-evauluate his life.  Prior to the crash he's chasing girls, drinking, etc., his only attachment comes right before the crash when his dog looks at him.  After the crash he gets serious about his life, gets married, has kids, and then it's over.

fuckin great. I think everything after the car crash is a dream of what would've happen in his life hadn't he died there, thus the relation to the theme.

Or it's the life that flashes in his mind before dying as Stefen said I think, also good theory

Also : is that Pauly Shore punching him?
Title: Re: Lynch's short films
Post by: Stefen on January 06, 2010, 02:47:39 PM
I just think the car crash was a traumatic event that left a lasting impression on his life. The same way the guy punching him did. The womanizing and boozing it up was all part of growing up. After the car crash is when he was entering adulthood. Maybe it helped usher in his transition out of adolescence. I don't think he died there. He seemed to live a long and happy life, but it just started going too fast the older he got, which is how life happens anyways.

The fact that a 42 second short film can conjure up all these different emotions and thoughts is truly a testament to it's power. We could all be right. I don't think there's any wrong way to look at it.

Watch David Lynch Interrogate a Monkey in His New Netflix Short Film

Titled "What Did Jack Do?", the 17-minute film is Netflix's gift to Lynch fans on his 74th birthday.

David Lynch's gift to his fans, on his 74th birthday today, is a peculiar and hilarious 17-minute short film titled "What Did Jack Do?", which debuted on Netflix with a very enticing one-sentence synopsis: "In a locked down train station, a homicide detective conducts an interview with a tormented monkey."

Shot in grainy black-and-white, reminiscent of classic movies of yesteryear, and Lynch's own 1977 feature film debut, "Eraserhead," the short film features Lynch playing a detective, interrogating the "Jack" in the title about a murder investigation, in the typical darkened, windowless interrogation room. The twist? Jack is a suited small monkey that actually speaks.

As you'd expect from Lynch, it's quite bizarre and unsettling, but also very funny, whether intentional or not.

It's an oddity of a film that Netflix categorizes as a crime drama, but it really can't be adequately put into words, and is best experienced in non-synopsis form. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it will easily be one of the strangest things that viewers at home for the holiday can watch today.

The monkey's voice is credited as "Jack Cruz," but it's unclear exactly who is really behind it. There's also a waitress who appears for a few seconds, played by Emily Stofle.

"What Did Jack Do?" will demand multiple viewings, whether to make sense of it, or just to marvel in its surrealism. (The story may or may not also involve a chicken named Toototabon. Classic Lynch.)

In 2019, Lynch received an Academy Honorary Award, which represented his very first Oscar win, despite a storied resume.

His last major project was the "Twin Peaks" revival series, which was released in 2017 to much critical acclaim. The series consisted of 18 episodes, and concluded in September 2017 with a two-part finale. There has been speculation as to whether there will be another season of "Twin Peaks." Although Lynch has not denied the possibility of another season, he has said if it were to happen, it would be a fourth season that will not air before 2021.

In the meantime, "What Did Jack Do?" is available to stream on Netflix right now.

Fun fact: Netdlix didn't pay a cent for this short. It's from 2016. But being on Netflix makes you a Netflix product.

That was fun.

Hey, if Lynch is getting paid, I'm fine as that presumably means he'll make new stuff.

I was assuming this was maybe something to do with those rumors of Lynch taking meetings at Netflix from a while back. Apparently not. Anyone got any update on that? Last I heard it might have something to do with Antelope Don't Run No More.

This is one of the funniest things Lynch has ever made.

That's an animation film from 2015 set to the music of Marek Zebrowski.

I'm more interested in the fact that David Lynch theatre is a new YouTube channel he set up initially to do his daily weather reports. I mean, it's cool that he's sharing old shorts and stuff on there, but I'm pretty sure the goal is we're all inducted into his meditation cult by the end of it.
