Post by: Ernie on February 27, 2003, 10:23:44 AM
Ok, so we've had a top 5 actors thread, a top 10 directors thread...now here is the music one. Post your top 5-10 musicians as of right now. Here's what I'm listening to a lot....

bob dylan
electric light orchestra
heart
the mamas and the papas
radiohead
sigur ros
sparklehorse
spiritualized

Are there any other Sigur Ros fans around here? I wondered how their new album was, I haven't heard it yet...I've mainly been listening to their old one.

i am an inactive dj there and do some production work, but since i'm not a student, i've been out of touch lately.

I just downloaded some new tracks from the new Sigur Ros album and...wow, it's great to hear more amazing stuff from them.

Anyway, I had a question that I've been meaning to ask since I discovered this freaking cool band...how the hell do you pronounce their name?

Is it either of these....

see-gurr-ross OR cy-gurr-ross

Those are my only guesses. I didn't know if maybe guys had seen them in an interview or been to one of their shows and found out how it's pronounced. I'm becoming a pretty big fan so I want to know how to at least say their name.

EDIT - Oh my god, I just downloaded Track 4 from () and....let me get a little High Fidelity on you here....I think it's probably one of the top 5 best songs I've ever heard. That guitar riff is otherworldy...fucking unreal stuff. Do yourself a favor and download Untitled Track 4 from (), Sigur Ros' new album if you haven't already...it's too good for words.

I think you could express it a bit like this:

cigger-ross

with the cigger kinda like in cigerette but it's really an u but i cant explain it because the sound don't really exist in the language of english. and the r in "ros" is rolled kinda like in spanish...

Ah, why do i bother? You goddamn  useless americatrash(to use an expresion used before) don't get it anyway... you don't have the tounge nor the man-ness of a true northern viking...

Lol...I know, I guess you just have to say "sigur ros' new album" or something...or else just "parentheses". You know, I don't of any record store near me that would have any of Sigur Ros' albums anyway, that's why I bought an MP3 player, it's the best thing in the world next to DVD's. It's so much easier.

QuoteDavid Cross Stand up CD

Loved Mr. Show and thought I'd like his comedy CD, but I thought it sucked. There's nothing worse than recycled political humor and last ditch digs at religion. At least the DJ bit was funny. As for my CD's, they're now the property of the Rest Area 172 local bum. I thought he may be able to improve his grooming with them.

Does Air have an album out or what? I love "playground love", that's one of my favorite songs...I've been trying to find some other songs by them.

Also, are there any cool Supertramp songs other than "goodbye stranger" and "the logical song"? I've been wanting to download some more by them.

Air has 4 albums out including the soundtrack to "The Virgin Suicides"..you definitely need to get their latest two albums "10,000HZ Legend" & "Moon Safari".. if you just want to download songs here are some amazing ones:
*Radio #1 *Sex Born Poison *People In The City *Sexy Boy *Kelly Watch The Stars *Remeber
Those are some highlights...i do recommend buying the albums anyway.

You totally should get album "Breakfast In America"..that album not only includes the songs in Magnolia but also includes some other songs of amazment...i wouldnt recommend any other of their albums because a lot of their other albums carry only one or two enjoyable songs. That's a fabulous album nevertheless.
Fucking great songs by supertramp:
*Gone Hollywood *Oh Darling *Breakfast In America *Child Of Vision

Yeah I know, sorry...I just didn't want to have to sift through all the mediocre songs they had, you know all the inevitable "filler tracks", I hate sifting through that shit. I only wanted to know what the good stuff was.

Great song recommendations by the way Bill, those songs are fucking amazing.

I'm all about Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and Bjork as of late.  I've also been into a lot of down south blues mostly Missisippi John Hurt and Son House.  There are two excellent local bands I listen too constantly, Ghostcar http://www.ghostcar.net and The Theatre Fire http://www.thetheaterfire.com/ if you get a chance check out some of their MP3's.  The new Common is incredible and I just got my hands on a KRS-ONE mix CD that's pretty damn good.

Sexterrossa was a member at the PTanderson board. I think what Pubrick was implying was that he is an older, wiser version of you, who had the tendency to ignore search functions, hence the relation question. It also might be in reference to posting a lot, something I got a lot of flack for too. Dont worry about it, we will let Pubrick sort this out though.

Oh, ok....well, it's not as bad as I thought.

I have been posting too much, haven't I? I don't think I've ever spent this much time on a message board. During the summer I'll post a lot less. Fuck, I have no fucking idea why I've been posting so fucking much and I didn't even notice it.

Well, thank you guys...cause I think I feel that way too. I like a lot of posts, you know. This is the best message board too because it sort of automatically calls for a lot of posts...cause there's a lot to talk about, you know what I mean?

Like, it's not one of those really close minded message boards...like the ones that are only about one person or one group of people, like a band or something. I guess that's why I like to post a lot here, I have interest in just about everything that's talked about here. And then all the people here are cool too so it's even better.

Look at Vanilla Sky. There musik were so awfully used. There musikvideos are moving enough. But i agree if you are making your own, non commercial-film, there musik can really add some melancolly.

Btw. That teaser looks cool and "yes" the musik gives me the impression that this is a moving picture :-D

One of the many things I forgot to bring here in england was my fucking cds! They're sitting in in the backseat of my car in the cold garage, lonely and sad. pops should be shipping them soon. Picked up Rolling Stones 40 Licks and CCR greatest hits to hold me over.

BJORK is coming to New York.

The Icelandic songbird will play an Aug. 22 concert at KeySpan Park in Coney Island, home of the minor-league baseball team the Brooklyn Cyclones.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday, with visitors to Bjork's web site (http://www.bjork.com) expected to get first crack. A second Coney Island show may be added.

Now at work on her next album, to be titled, "The Lake Album," Bjork will head to Valencia, Spain, May 30 to launch her European tour; further North American tour dates have yet to be announced.

Being There is an excellent disc (or two).  The more I listen to it, the more I love it.  There's some great stuff on there.  You should check it out sometime since you like YHF.  It comes highly recommended (from me, at least, whatever that's worth to ya').

Every time I go into CD Warehouse I drop by the Wilco section to see if it's gone down. They only have one copy and it's $15.99. One of these days I'll just break down and buy it. I've got no question that I'll love it.

I personally didn't like Being There too much.  It had a more significant 'country' feel to it than Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (which I love by the way) and it just didn't sit right in my stomach.

Others just love it though.

I guess I just like the country feel of it.  At first I didn't like the songs with the heavier country influences but they've grown on me a lot and some of them are now some of my favorite songs on the album.  The same thing happened with A.M.(which I also love, by the way).  Has anyone listened to Summerteeth?  I haven't heard anything off that one yet.

Being There is a great album, shows a little of their progression towards Yankee Hotel Foxtrot....and yes i'm a big fan of the bands roots, which are decisively more country sounding. Uncle Tupelo was a great band...one of my essential discs is their anthology....life boy if you like Wilco's earlier releases, check out the Uncle Tupelo Anthology (89-93)

I picked up  a copy of "Anodyne" and must say that I'm actually liking it alot.  Not half as much as YHF, but still a very good album...for being pretty dern country. I like the more rock sounding cuts on the album as well, but it's solid overall.  The cover of "Suzy Q" (on the re released version) is the best cover of a CCR song, ever.  Period.

Thanks for the info about UT, I'm digging it.

yeah, i can truely imagine that. i allways felt that blur had problems uniting albarn and coxon, and that way to much of there material is dominated by one of them individualy, with the majority of it being albarn. their only truely suceed when they manage to balance their contributions like, for example, much of the 'orange' album stuff.

nonono, i was actually talking about the album released previous 13, the selftitled album. 13 is definatly one of their best too, very varied and fascinating, alot like the selftitled album.

and i agree to the point of view that it sucks big time that just when you thought the band was goin to be really nterresting and personal, coxon quits. i however dont think coxons solo work is any good.

the choices listed all have a number in them except for choice one, three, four and five. but then again that wouldnt be one hundred percent fair considering 'OP8' is just another way of spelling 'opiate'.

Aimee Mann (Lost in Space is AMAZING)
Radiohead (Self-explanatory)
Steely Dan (Never has there been a bad album)
Crosby Stills and Nash {and young} (Their harmonies and guitar playing makes me jealous)

The Roots (Rap I actually enjoy)

WHAT I HAVE BEEN LISTENING TO RECENTLY:

-White Stripes "Elephant"- i thought they could not get any better then White Blood Cells. Proved me the fuck wrong. "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" and "Keep Her in you Pocket" are favorites

-The Cure "Acoustic Hits"- This is the bonus disc on the greatest hits. It is ten times better then the normal hits disc.

-Tom Waits "Closing Time"- i get the feeling nobody listens to Tom anymore

-Sigur Ros "()"- amazing. It sucks you in. Just don't listen to it while you drive. Trust me. You will crash

-and misc. stuff from PJ Harvey, Primal Scream, Iggy Pop, Bowie, Icarus Line, Taking Back Sunday, Talking Heads, Joy Division, Velvet Underground, much more

Well, Mr. Guff, I think their target audience are not the lazy, skilless people that can't be bothered to look for the damn CD themselves, instead of pestering the HMVers that have other things to do, like monitoring the DVD section for all you DVD-theft schemers on the Xixax.com board.

I really try not to be an asshole too, I realize I should have used a search engine. I wasn't trying to be cute or anything or piss Pubrick or anybody else off. I don't try to piss people off. I'm just not very good with the internet all the time. Did sexterrossa try to piss people off with questions? Cause I'm not one of those people I don't think.

has it been debated whether me and this guy are the same person yet?

Lol! I can only imagine who he is referring to and I don't even want to know.

Actaully, you know...maybe I do want to know because, I have a feeling  that in a few years, I will be that reference and I want to be fully prepared to accept that.

everyone's fascination with me is astounding.

The Dears are a new group from Montreal, with a voice that sounds very much like Morissey's ... if you like the Smiths, you should like them, though they don't have half the spirit Morissey had in his lyrics.

And I agree that Dead Can Dance really didn't age well, and I didn't like them before seeing their show in Montreal 2-3 years ago. But now, I think they're very good, depending on my mood.

Oh, and I forgot someone on my list, Neil Young (and Crazy Horse)!

Well, I swallowed the likes of Gene and Echobelly hook, line, and sinker, so I'll have to give The Dears a try...
