hey guys. i'm a new member to xixax and i hope you guys can accept me. if it means anything at all i was one of the original members on the pta forum that greg had running over at cigarettes and coffee. i think my username was 'lastdata' then but i can't remember now.

i just wanted to introduce myself to the crew (been snooping around the last couple of nights. and recognising some of the members from the original forum... pubrick, macguffin etcetc)

now. onto the stuff you all opened page for CRITERION DVDS.

over at the official criterion website they have a frequently asked questions page..

http://www.criterioncollection.com/asp/faq.asp

a few months ago i read this page and thought hmmm i should submit some ideas for dvds i would like to see criterion release.

of course i came to the conclusion that anything i wanted to see would have already been suggested, but the idea hung around in the back of my mind.

just the other day i tried to email them some suggestions and also added a complimentary note on the beauty of their dvds. i have to say that the criterion edition of down by law is one of the most beautiful dvds i have even seen. the transfer, the extras and of course the film. as the all too common phrase goes 'if only every film could be released by criterion..they simply do the best work'

so now then..

my idea is, for us, (xixax dwellers..pta fans. and film fans alike) to get together drum up a 'what we want on criterion list' compile it here and then everyone just copy and paste it and email it to criterion.

the logic behind the idea is for criterion to put out a dvd they have to be confident that there is a market for the film they are considering releasing.. if we all (for example 50 people) send an email saying we want for example 'badlands' on criterion that's 50 people they know that are interested in buying a badlands dvd with the criterion label.

now of course we all know it's not just a matter of the amount of people that dictates the dvds criterion releases. rights and special features and all sorts of things need to be secured first...but at the same time..here we all are dreaming of getting a paticular film on criterion when we can make a small effort to try and help it get released.

the way i see it, it can't hurt.

i know i have no cred around this place. and i'm rambling on too long but magnolia is 3 hours long and that's way too short... i'm gonna ramble til pta says i'm making 'project x 5'..

i'll get the ball rolling

-punch drunk love (i know pta said that the superbit edition was the definitive edition but i goddamn plain want more damn it)

-ken park (i don't think it has official distribution in the states..i got a copy from france with a few extra features but i want more and with the amount of controversy around this film i think there would have to be a lot of extra features lying around waiting to be picked up)

-kids (i think this fits under the important contempary films banner that criterion has set for itself)

-badlands (the uk edition of this dvd has a making of titled 'the absence of malick' which isn't enough for me..it's a damn classic film and would fit into criterions catalogue beautifully)

-bottle rocket (why the hell not? they've already put the tenenbaums and rushmore into the collection. why not follow through? plus there's the short film 'bottle rocket' that needs a home on dvd' haha)

-lost in translation (i think one day criterion will pick this up even if i have to wait til i'm 50 years old.. or unless paramount or something holds the rights and simply will not give them up.. i don't know about the american edition of this disc but on the australian edition the transfer of the actual film could be a little better (i'm being very picky) and more specials features please!!!)

-buffalo '66 (a theatrical trailer??? is that all? i can't believe gallo hasn't recorded his own directors commentaries of himself masturbating and released them. he loves the sound of his own voice and this film was one of the best of the nineties)

-casino (hmmm. i think we can pretty much forget about this coming out through criterion. or any scorsese for that matter. scorsese films are money and you'd have to be and idiot to let criterion to rake in all the money from all his films) granted last temptation of christ got the criterion treatment..but goodfellas, casino, raging bull, taxi driver...hmmmm.

-dead man (after down by law..i wish all of jarmuschs films got picked up. stranger than paradise would be lovely to see as a criterion release, and as far as i know night on earth hasn't got a dvd release in the states. the australian edition is. crap!!! 4:3 and dirty as hell.)

-glengarry glen ross (wouldn't you expect ONE of mamet's films would have gotten a criterion release by now. the spanish prisoner or house of games or something??)

-annie hall/manhattan (any woody allen at the moment would satisfy me. not likely though i wouldn't suspect

well. that's the ball rolling.
