Titling

Asides from doing pretty, clean, and sharp digital titling, then outputting whatever media, what were the standard titling techniques/effects used on film productions? I'm mainly interested in 70's/early 80's films. Also, what about the effects used on the titles? (I.E: an expanding glow, like touchstone's recently abandoned logo)....
