damn, JAWS is a good movie!!
LaMotta's title fight in Raging Bull. Starting in the dressing room, then through the hallway, up into the arena, and into the ring, tracking with DeNiro.
I love moving camera. So many other directors would have cut, but Scorsese holds the mood with this shot, and sets up the fight perfectly. Plus, there's something beautiful in the mixture of excitement, concentration, and sadness in DeNiro's performance (especially during the start of the shot).

i love the very final shot at the end of vertigo (i know i mention that movie too much, but i fuckin love it to death), james stewart just standing there on the ledge as she starts ringing the bell, then fade out. beautiful, beautiful.
close encounters - when the little boy opens the door and there is the orange light emulating through it.
raging bull - the shot that sorta cranes down over his head at the sound of the bell as he raises his arms when he wins the fight
i also love the shot in goodfellas when ray liotta snorts the coke and the camera does that super fast zoom into his face and his eyes and nostrils are beat red.

I can't narrow it down to just one. Different directors have composed different shots that are perfect for very different reasons. Too hard to pick just one.
hard to pick just one, but one of my recent favorites has to be in Amelié, when she is skipping rocks in the canal and the crane/camera just sweeps above her 8)

When Tom Cruise is running to the ledge of the building and about to jump off in Vanilla Sky. It's just neat how the camera follows him. This is the image that always comes to my mind when I think about Vanilla Sky.
I also like when the detective falls down the stairs in Psycho. :wink:

I've got to say, having just watched PDL once again, the silhouette kiss with the people running past: the layers of colour, the depth, the person running in the background at the end... Aaaaah... I know there are other more worthy shots, but that's the one that comes to mind right now. I love it.

Slowly the camera cranes down and across to the other side of the room to find Ingrid Bergman; slowly zooming in and landing in an Extreme Close-Up that Holds on the key that is in her hand. Beautiful shot.

I just saw this for the first time this week, and I fully agree. The more films you see, the fewer shots surprise or awe you, but this one is absolutely brilliant. Utilitarian

This is what I mean about the difficulty, though. You can take any of your favorite films and find dozens of "perfectly" composed shots. Kubrick, for one... I couldn't begin to isolate just one perfect composition. Those films are chock-full of them. The very first cut from the red title sequence to Alex staring you down, then very, very slow zoom out at the beginning of
Clockwork Orange... the final scene of
2001... and on and on.
It's also difficult because sometimes a scene feels perfectly composed in CONTEXT. Like, I think the next-to-last shot of
Mulholland Dr.- the superimposition of "Betty" and "Rita" from earlier in the film, over a swooning, sparkling L.A. cityscape- is just stunningly beautiful and incredibly rich with significance, a "perfect" composition, but only if you've seen everything that came before...

Well, this isn't my favorite and its not picture compositionnaly sound, but it kinda stuck with me and i liked it. That shot in 'Confessions of a dangerous mind' where the characters head is in the lower left corner and the rest of the shot looks up at the ceiling(for no particular reason. Stylish). I liked it.
As for a good sequence, the scene in se7en where Summerset and Mills meet for the first time and they walik down the street. I didnt even realize it was one shot until i watched the dvd commentary. Great stuff.

i like the bit in BN where Dirk gets in that guys car (who asks him to jack off) and there is a shot of the carpark and the car coming to a stop at the left side of the screen. I just love the way it all fits in the frame. The lamp post and all.
There are plenty of wonderfully composed shots in Barry Lyndon. Kubrick often starts with a close up, then pulls back for shots that are like landscape paintings.

Yeah, there does seem to be some confusion as to what "composed" means. It means one single shot- not a sequence- where everything in the frame is as apt or perfect as possible.
And I'd say that Frank Lloyd Wright-based bathroom shot from The Shining well qualifies, but Kubrick's work is replete with perfectly composed shots. I don't think I could choose that one over the opening shot of Clockwork Orange.

seven samurai - i forget exactly who, but these two guys have a little duel, and right after the victor slashes the other with his blade, the loser falls to the ground in slow-motion. that shot is so fucking...pure.clean.solid.
taxi driver - lots of good ones; the camera leaving travis at the payphone in the hallway, alka-seltzer, tracking shot when the cops find him on the couch next to the brainless landlord, our first sight of his mohawk as he takes some pills.
casino - very, very fun shots. the shot from inside the straw with cocaine flowing around the camera, the helicopter shot over the desert, the counting-room shot, fuck i need to watch that again.

I know it's sort of typical to bring up Boogie Nights, but:
I think one of the most perfectly composed shots of recent memory is the very final shot. I hate how everybody makes such a huge deal about the cock, because what I think is so genius about it is that once Dirk's head is decapitated by the frame- a fairly drastic compositional technique, that, and one not used terribly often- everything on that screen, including the infamous cock, has become an object, and the only face- the only humanity- we're left with is that of a blank mannequin staring out at us. I think it's a very unsentimentally poignant ending; the way it's composed and where everything is situated really lends to the emotional impact of the film's end.
Requiem For A Dream. I'm not a particularly big fan of the movie and I've only seen it once, but one image that's really burned in my mind from it is the first shot you get of Jennifer Connelly. It's a high angle shot I think, and she's looking up into camera. For some reason I remember the way that shot was composed was absolutely electrifying. If someone could cap it, that would be cool...

Have you ever seen the movie "A Perfect Blue?" It's a Japanese anime (an excellent one), and it had that same scene. A couple of years later, Aronofsky did a rip-off of that scene in "Requiem..."
I don't think Aronofsky mentions it in the commentary.

Speaking of Kubrick, is somebody can do DVD captures, and has these DVDs, how about a couple of these shots.
The stairway in Victor's home in Eyes Wide Shut. All lit up with bright Christmas lights. There is one shot in particular with, I THINK, Victor walking upstairs. It is so gorgeously framed.
I'm quite fond of the pool in "Three Colors: Blue" as well. The "fetal position" scene is really beautiful. I think it is right after she has let the cat kill the little mice. She goes for a swim, and then as she is about to get out of the pool, she drops back in and sort of curls up. Really neat shot. All three of the films have some remarkable shots. Red and the fashion model shoot is really beautiful.

There's a shot early on in Terence Malick's "Days of Heaven" that made my jaw drop the first time I saw it...
It's the long, wide shot of a train going over a very high train trestle, almost in silhouette...I don't even understand how it was done. Could be a model.
There are other shots in this movie that are unlike anything you've ever seen. If you haven't seen it, rent or buy the DVD. Malick's best film (not really saying much being there are only 3) but just breathtakingly beautiful.

OK, enough of the sarcasm. No point in arguing about this, but film is a visual medium, and isolating certain compositions, even single frames, is a worthwhile topic of discussion.
I'll use my example, Days of Heaven. Simple, almost nonexistent plot, little or no dialogue, a certain aimless, meandering quality to the structure (which comments on the aimless, meandering lifestyle of the main characters), but ANY frame from this film can be captured and printed and would be a work of art on par with some of the great landscape painters of antiquity.
A single composition from a great film can create enormous emotional impact, an impact that is beyond words, beyond editing and time, beyond any of the film conventions that are carried over from theater (scenes, dialogue, acts, etc.)
Look at 2001: just a series of brilliant, breathtaking, eerie compositions that work on their own as much as they work in tandem with others...

okay, as for black hawk, there were two in particular i was looking for. one was an overhead shot of the 2 helicopters, when they're talking w/ eachother on the radio about playing scrabble, and as they pass eachother there is a really neat overhead shot.
also, sum of the shots during the sequence near the beginning when all the the helicopters r going in, the irene part. the helicopters r going over the water, and there's no sound, just music.

Good stuff. There's one shot in particular that I like in that sequence. The camera is mounted on the side of a huey and facing Eric Bana, and there's a dust cloud of some sort that forms into a circle in the huey's wake. I even remember that shot in the trailer.

A true mise-en-abyme of Spielberg's Jaws, this shot tells the tale visually and in motion. The dolly/zoom effect is shocking to the audience, even though the shot captures no murder in progress, no imminent threat in and of itself. Still, this is

Kubrick gets such mileage out of relatively static images, and this is no exception. This ghostly bathroom simply does not belong in the Overlook Hotel—it's too new, too polished, too lavishly appointed in colors that scream in comparison to the rest of the building's tones. But that's just what makes Grady and Jack's presence in it so right. They've stepped outside Jack's waking dream for a moment to speak about the dream—what's going on in the past and how the future should proceed. Just as they discuss the hotel's past, so too does this bathroom echo the hotel itself. The reds to right and left create a kind of "blood corridor" that recedes into the 3rd dimension of the image; the mirrors mirror the moment in "that room" when Jack sees the thing he's embraced. This deep red is just what Grady unleashed from his daughters' bodies years ago and what the elevators will later spill. Finally, Grady's formal attire adds weight to his talk of having "corrected" his daughters; he looks every bit the part in this tidy loo as he instructs Jack to, in so many words, do his part in tidying up the Overlook again.

Another study in visual narrative economy: Could the One Ring be any bigger or more important? Not only does it dwarf the dwarf Frodo, it could encircle the preordained King Aragorn, and already challenges the might and stature of the very Misty Mountains it reflects (and seems to reflect on). Yet, to the too proud Boromir who's about to grasp it for the first time, it seems all too small a thing, even as it dominates the frame for us. Add to that the links of gold strung through the Ring, and you've got the Fellowship itself symbolized as well in this single frame. Like his adaptation of LOTR or not, you must give credit where credit is due. Peter Jackson takes time within the sweep of his drama to give us tiny detail and reveal the biggest of pictures. More power to him.

Here we go, and please do check my work:
1. Kane, in mid-frame lies dying or already dead on a slab of what looks to be crushed velvet.
2. Beyond him, light streams through one of Xanadu's many portals, casting the opening in stark outline. The silhouette is decidedly churchlike, is it not, and sorta places Kane in a kind of readymade tomb.
3. At lower-left is the snow-globe sized mini-log cabin, which we'll come to see as a talisman for Kane, a reminder of his long lost happy childhood in wintry Colorado. The glass globe that surrounded it has shattered, spilling its water and false snow contents onto the floor. (Or has it not shattered yet? I can't exactly recall the sequence of shots just before and after this.)
4. At lower-right, Kane's nurse is reflected by a broken shard of the globe's glass as she enters the room, having heard the sound of the glass shattering. She's about to become the only witness (?) to Kane's last word: "Rosebud."

There's no way to list every single great shot, but there are some that stick out in my mind.
Literally almost every single shot in "Hard Eight" is perfectly composed and beautifully done.
I love the ballroom shots in "The Shining" with Jack sitting at the bar (with or without the dozens of ghosts). I love the music in the ballrooms scenes too. I made the soundtrack of the film for myself. In fact, every Stanley Kubrick film has great shots like that.
The last 5 minutes of "Vanilla Sky" with Tom Cruise on top of the building and jumping off are some of the most brilliant shots ever filmed.
The opening shots of "Blue Velvet" and the camera zooming in on the ear is spectacular. Also David Lynch's other masterpiece, "Mulholland Drive", has many great shots as well.
The dream that Lester has with rose peddles falling in "American Beauty".
The last shot in Martin Scorsese's "Raging Bull" and "The Last Temptation of Christ".
Anderson's shots in "Magnolia" during Jason Robard's monolouge with the camera going over all the characters in the movie is chilling.
The final shots in "In the Bedroom" with the camera looking over the quiet town early in the morning.
The scene in "The World According to Garp" with Garp upstairs in his room at night listening to the next door neighbor's saxophone while opening and closing the blinds to his window. As he opens and closes them, he looks back on his life and sees certain scenes of his life each time.
The plane crash/strawberry sequence at the end of "Fearless" is thrilling and sad.
The last shot in "Apocalyspe Now" is one of the most haunting ever filmed. Great last line too.

Citizen Kane is all about those very layers of 3D space. The opening montage of barriers and fences that lead up to Xanadu; the differing levels of spoken dialouge and character size that can be mapped onto different deep focus shots; and (and I think this is the most applicable to the deep doorway in this particular shot) the infinite mirror shot of Kane as he leaves his room, old and withered (which I think happens just before the shot in question, chronologically speaking).
I did notice one other detail: what looks to be chainlink fence just beyond the window above Kane. Yet another layer of barrier between Kane, Xanadu, and the outside world.

Well, to be a stickler, I'd guess that it's not really a lense flare exactly, but a little ball of light that the globe has reflected. Doesn't change the fact that it totally haloes and obscures Kane's face, though. Your idea that it's Kane's soul/ghost/aura as it escapes him still makes a ton of sense. (edit: Now, looking again, I just don't know. Does the shard of glass extend that far up? Is the globe even broken yet? Man, somebody help me out with a shot sequence, here. Any way you slice it, this shot, like the plot of the film, like the film itself, like Kane's life, like "Rosebud", like Kane's collection of treasure, even, is one big puzzle [like Susan's puzzles...hah! It never ends].....Fascinating film and simply the best ever.)

these three following caps are from "the pianist". i find these shots in the movie very haunting and the viewer can only see a bit of the destruction because of the big wall that's there. this happens after some of the jews fights back at the nazi's but after a while they have to give up because the whole ghetto is on fire.

I'm going to have to say that long shot at the beginning of I Am Cuba when the camera follows the woman and all that. Not necessarily because of any 'emotional impact' or anything like that, but because I think it's amazing to think how it could have been pulled off without the use of Steadicam crap. One of cinema's greatest mysteries unsolved....
Speaking of I Am Cuba, I love the shot where the camera swoops down through the trees and follows that guy. You know, that one. I'm just thinking, how the hell did they do that back in '64?

One I noticed as I was re-watching Do The Right Thing was where Da Mayor was walking up the browstone steps with the vase of flowers. The shot seems so effortless, but all the colours just work wonderfully together.

ok i think it's time for a little tutorial on the use of the search engine. and what better place to give it than here in this random thread where it will be totally ignored.
the first thing u must always do is
remove the dot from "Search for any terms or use query as entered" and click it on the option below it
"Search for all terms".
for that to be effective,
second most important thing to do is,
BE AS SPECIFIC AS POSSIBLE. say right now u were looking for best scenes, even if u "search for all terms" u will find that those words are used a lot in almost every thread. so u narrow it down by searching for best scenes/sequences and u will find a few bogus threads but i guarrantee on the first page u will see the one that describes best what u were looking for.
third, if u get like 45 results,
don't be afraid to scroll down and even click page two of the results page. u just hav to skim over the titles and find the one that best fits. sure enuff at least on the first page u'll get a thread that even redirects u to the one that is older and prolly on the 2nd page.
FOUR/Quatro, don't hav to master all the options and things that appear on the search screen, most are useless. these are common sense: if ur searching for an actor, to see if a thread has been made about them, on the
FORUM option select
IN FRONT OF CAMERA. if a director,
THE DIRECTOR CHAIR. if a movie just came out on dvd look in Now Showing first, for sum crossover dvd details.
FIVE/finally, if looking for a specific quote or information. go to the
Display Results As section and select POSTS. this will take u to the specific post where this info/line was mentioned. additionally, if u want to find sumthing like "What did MacGuffin think of HULK". u select POSTS and in
Search for Author and type in MacGuffin,. this will give u every time MacGuffin mentioned HULK. this is great when searching for a
XIXAX Kodak Moment, like search for (all terms) "pee in your mouth", Display as: Posts, and Search for Author: Kotte. and u will find the first time kotte told us his wonderful shocking story of young unrequited love.
From now on anyone who is redirected will be sent this post, as a reminder of how to use the search feature, and they can provide feedback on what failed/confused them. mostly i think it will be number 3.

I just finished re-watching Schindler's List. Damn, it's got to be one of the most beautifully photographed films I've ever seen, it's close to perfection. It really looks old, and more like a documentary than a film. You get that brutal feeling that it's real, with the gritty newsreel black and white.
Anyone want to dig up some caps? Pretty please? One of the train arriving at Auschwitz would be very nice.

Ive posted a couple paris texas shots some pages back on this thread, but now they're all "this image is hosted by angelfire" crap. you can still see them, you just have to copy the path from the properties and paste in in the adress.
