Post by: Robyn on November 01, 2017, 07:32:27 PM
these are my favorites by 60s godard:

1. bande a part
2. a woman is a woman
3. pierrot le fou
4. weekend
5. breathless
6. vivre se vie
7. le mepris
8. masculin feminin
9. alphaville
10. made in U.S.A

there's still some i haven't seen, like La chinoise, and I haven't seen much else from the french new wave beside Truffaut of course and a few more.

what are your favorite french new wave films? I really want to see more.

Everything Melville, Hiroshima, mon amour and Last Year at Marienbad. Louis Malle's youth trilogy (Murmur of the Heart, Lacombe, Lucien, Au revoir les enfants), too.

I have owned these DVDs for like 10 years, but haven't watched them yet (I had a really fun french new wave phase when I was like 15-16. the french new wave and leonard cohen basically made me start smoking, and it was all fun and games until mom found out that I had been watching black and white french films and smoked cigarettes all this time). maybe i'll watch Hiroshima tonight. it's about time.

everyone agrees that smoking is a bad idea but as far i can tell 50% of life is a bad idea

one step further with Alain Resnais, into Muriel, or the Time of Return. for at the very least its beginning.

Zazie dans le métro is popular among people who believe in positivity and imagination etc

the 1959 cannes, which had both The 400 Blows and Hiroshima Mon Amour, was won by Black Orpheus, directed by Marcel Camus. here's both the end of that movie and a reaction to the idea of that not being the movie which should have won

don't smoke, don't drink wine, don't eat red meat, don't do drugs, and basically: don't do anything that makes your life fun, because when you are old and saggy and are rotting away somewhere, you really want those extra years you got when you never lived

speaking of imitating art, I had a phase in ninth grade when I used to this after watching Breathless, and I thought I was the coolest kid in school. what a fucking dork. if you are going to imitate a dude no one thinks is cool or has even heard about, don't mimic a gesture that makes it look like you are trying to hide your oral herpes. that makes you a easy target for the bullies (pro tip)
