But the  question is: Are the characters like us, or do we subconsciously act (or think we act) like our favorite characters?

I think it's both. sometimes we can subconsciously act as characters, but what happens most is the characters beeing quite like us and that's what makes us like a certain movie so much... we see bits of ourselves in them.
