Title: Jauja by Lisandro Alonso
Post by: Kal on November 14, 2012, 12:35:05 PM
We just made the announcement for my next movie (outside of Radical).

Viggo Mortensen to star in Lisandro Alonso drama
Actor will also produce film to be shot in Denmark, Argentina
By DAVE MCNARY

Viggo Mortensen has signed on to produce and star in Lisandro Alonso's untitled drama set in Denmark and Argentina.
Andy Kleinman's Massive Inc. will produce together with Mortensen's Perceval Films banner and Alonso's 4L. Jaime Romandia of Mantarraya and Ilse Hughan of Fortuna Films are also producing.

Production is scheduled to start early next year in Denmark and Argentina. Script by Alonso and Fabian Casas follows a Dane and his daughter who journey to a desert that exists in a realm beyond the confines of civilization.

Alonso's first film, "La Libertad," screened in the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes in 2001. His last film, "Liverpool," premiered at Cannes.

Mortensen, whose father is Danish, was last seen as Sigmund Freud in "A Dangerous Method" and will be seen next in "On the Road" and "Two Faces of January," Hossein Amini's directorial debut. He's managed by Principato-Young.

Directed by: Lisandro Alonso

Awesome! I've somehow become a big fan of Alonso's films without ever actually seeing any of them.

Thanks. You should watch them. Very unique style. This one I think will be great. If you look at his filmmaking and add an actor as talented as Viggo... very excited about it!

that's great. viggo was pretty amazing in that other argentinian film, and I think an actor like him, with so much gravitas can work wonders in a contemplative styled film like alonso usually does. one of the things that usually bother me about those films is that directors use non actors and sometimes the non actors work and sometimes they're like really uncomfortable people on camera. with viggo you know you'll get some awesome performance no matter what.

Big news! Our movie will premiere at "Un Certain Regard" in Cannes!

And the title is "Jauja" in case an admin wants to update the thread.

The sales company has been doing a bunch of deals during the festival so hopefully we will know soon what happens with distribution. Other than that it will probably go to some other festivals as well. I will keep you guys posted as we know more.

It's a bummer we didn't win the main prize, but I had a feeling that the President of the Jury was going to screw us. The film was beloved by everyone, the audience, the critics, etc. Best reviews of any movie in the entire festival, and over 50 reviews by top critics as well as the general sense for what I read on Twitter and in the press. It didn't win. A movie most people didn't even see and that has pretty bad critics and reviews ended up winning instead. Oh well!

this is huge for many reasons kal, and I salute you for this because it fucking rocks.
I have impossible expectations for this film now. Lisandro Alonso is big in latinamerica, he is up there with Reygadas and him working with an actor like Viggo can only mean great things. I was a big fan of los muertos, but liverpool left me a little cold. A drastic change like having a big hollywood star in your next film, in the case of Alonso is exciting, and can only mean good things.

But to spice things up, here. What can you tell us about the process of getting this film made, how did Lisandro Alonso got into his head to find viggo for it, and any other cool info or anecdotes about the production.

congrats again!

Lisandro and I started talking about this like 5 years ago. We are friends and we wanted to make a movie together. We had made the opposite type of films so far, I did mostly commercial movies and comedies, he did ultra artistic and slow films. So one way to mix both and make something appealing to a slightly wider audience was to get a well known actor involved. Viggo was his first and only choice, and as he started writing the project with Fabian Casas, they did it with Viggo in mind all along. It was really great when he decided to not just act, but produce the film with us and get super involved in the entire process.

There's a segment that was shot in Denmark, and the rest of the film in Argentina. Post production was mostly between Argentina and Mexico.

I have a couple of filmmaker friends (husband and wife, they coproduced my film actually) who make films in the vein of this contemporary latin american cinema, the so called contemplative modern cinema, with natural landscapes, non actors, all that. They recently made their last film with a new ingredient in the mix, none other than Geraldine Chaplin. I've been really excited about that because one of the things that always bothered me about these types of films (not necessarily theirs or alonso's, but still) was the "pass" given to their non actors to not really do anything and look awkward on camera and be in a middle ground between trying to act and failing (bresson school and all that), and I think a real actor, one as good as geraldine chaplin or viggo mortensen can bring something incredible to the table in this type of filmmaking, not to mention the wider appeal. but actors can keep your attention in a way non actors just can't all the time. I hope more filmmakers dare to do mix ups like this: thin narrative filmmakers can go with big actors, and linear commercial filmmakers can go to non actors.

This is the kind of film that makes me feel bad for praising Interstellar.

So much beauty here. To be ridiculously reductive and not even come close to the real thing: this is like a dream Tarkovsky would have dreamed after watching The Searchers.

Congrats and thanks, Kal.
Title: Re: Jauja by Lisandro Alonso

Congrats indeed on a really good film, kal.

The greens in the beginning are still stuck on my retina (and the red of the commander's pants), the pace and sense of space that intensified the search so much. And it's funny!

Kal, please come to the rescue and provide the correct pronunciation of the title, at the festival where I saw it there were at least three versions going around.

SPOILERS

What did you make of the ending Axo? It was a shock, to put it mildly, and initially I was disappointed to end up in it-was-all-a-dream territory (and is that what it is?), but then I was seduced by some thoughts on how it changed the preceding story for me. Again, to be reductive: An orphan dreaming of a parent? An intense longing for someone shouting ones name in the desert? Of an intensity of focus to counter her languid strolling?

The film really messed with my head and left me with like ten different interpretations and the feeling that it doesn't matter which of them is true or (most satisfyingly)if there even has to be one. This is all from lines /images in the movie:

It's definitely a dream. When Inge runs away from the camp the only thing she decides to keep is a timepiece. The old woman is the girl. She says she'll be here forever. The dog is the key. The lost General in the desert was reported being seen roaming around leading a pack of thieves dressed like a woman. His dog disappeared with him and its name was "Jersey". So the general's(who dresses like a woman) dog is the girl's dog in the present. The dog scratches himself because he doesn't understand why she has to be away so long. Dogs understand way more than we give them credit for. The present girl's house is filled with portraits of her ancestors in the same blue uniforms. The house is almost a museum. She grows up, alone, enveloped in the past. So she dreams a past for herself, where her father searches the wilderness for her, makes mistakes, falters, falls(growing up is the realization that our parents are fallible), where she's a great General who rebels and leads a gang of outlaws against greasy, pervy, genocidal colonialists, where she lives forever and has a dog that follows her everywhere. Something like that. Or you can do a Borgesian flip and reverse everything I said and make the dreamer the dreamed. Or nothing like that. But I loved that the film made me think these things.

I fucking love this. Beautiful analysis. Someday we can discuss if what you guys are thinking has anything to do with what the Director was thinking but the beauty of this film is that WHO CARES. It's all possible and it all makes sense. Or maybe it doesn't.

The name is pronounced "HOW-HA".

On a separate note, we have 86% Rotten Tomatoes with Top Critics, and all the reviews are pretty great.

Look at what NPR says:

http://www.npr.org/2015/03/19/393819360/jauja-a-land-of-plenty-but-hard-to-find

The first paragraph is probably the best thing anyone can say about your film:

"Predicting year-bests in March is a recipe for eating your words, so I'll just say this: I can't imagine more than a couple of movies surpassing Lisandro Alonso's Jauja this year (it's certainly better than anything from 2014). And we'll be incredibly lucky to receive anything as visually stunning."

i really love what lisandro alonso says here  "I'm not really interested in the plot that the narrator starts telling in the film. What really interests me is an aesthetic point of view about things, images, this time and space in which to create cinema, and where those elements can take us as an audience. I think cinema is still too young to be forced to only exist in one form, in this more conventional way that everybody knows. As a viewer, I like to be surprised by a movie, so I start to start to ask different questions to which I have no answers."

This changed my day. Fucking loved it. Diving in the cinema, just oozing.  At nighttime, with the least amount of hope, with the stars, the clouds veiling the stars to an overflow of music. The Argentinian landscape wrote this film, it dictated it-- as if what we were watching was authorless. When the two are beginning to fuck, the power and emotion given to the delicate white fluffy plant tells a story and evokes a feeling that shows one major example of the cinema telling the real story and real feelings and real meanings laced together in this film.... when the daughter tells her father that the landscape "fills her", and the shift in Viggo walking up the hill, looking back, getting to the top of the hill. The story was so simple, and I didn't like the way it ended, but it didn't ruin the movie for me at all. I was too far out for anything to break its spell.

Seeing this again on Tuesday.

what a masterpiece. just saw it. I'm blown away.
what colors and how it takes you in. I was reluctant at first but as it progressed I felt myself being sucked into it's spell.
great fucking film.

The funniest thing about the film being out on Netflix is that it has 2 stars compared to 92% Rotten Tomatoes and amazing reception elsewhere. I think most idiots on Netflix see Viggo on a horse and think its supposed to be another Lord of the Rings.
