Lynch directs Nissian car commercial
So original and distinctive is the new Micra that Nissan has invented a new language to describe it. And our teacher will be David Lynch.
Micra is no ordinary car, and no ordinary words can communicate it. In conjunction with TBWA/G1, Nissan has developed a break-through communications concept based around the fusion of existing words to create a whole new vocabulary, such as modern yet subtly retro – to make modtro. To underpin this departure from the ordinary, Nissan asked acclaimed film director David Lynch to direct the TV commercial.
The Micra combines bold and distinctive design, with easy to use technology in a car engineered to be fun and easy to drive. TBWA/G1 was briefed to develop a campaign which would reflect this unique mix of values not only in terms of the Micra, but also in the broader context of the Nissan brand as a whole.
Agreeing to direct the advertisement, David Lynch commented, "I like the Micra, particularly the headlamps. They are like jewels. And I like the concept of 'Do you speak Micra?' I like modern and retro put together to make modtro – that's a very good concept."
Accompanied by a flow of Micra words spoken by giant blue lips – which recalls the atmosphere of Lynch's Blue Velvet – the new Micra moves through an innovative environment lit by the French director of photography, Jean-Yves Escoffier (The Crow: City of Angels, Good Will Hunting, Les Amants du Pont-Neuf ).
David Lynch: "I think it was [surrealist artist Rene] Magritte who put lips in the sky. This is a bit of the feel of those big beautiful lips speaking in a supermodern and very graphic city [Paris]."
Lynch and Escoffier combined to use innovative technologies and an experimental approach to create an out-of-the-ordinary commercial.
David Lynch said: "There is a lot of experimentation in the shooting, so we have many pieces to fit together. Plus, we are building things in 3D for this commercial. [For example] the lips have got to be isolated and finessed. "
Chris Garbutt, Creative Director, TBWA/G1 Europe commented: "Lynch and Escoffier used a wide range of machinery and equipment to get the desired effect – from a helicopter, to another car, even a parachute to reflect light from the helicopter to the Micra. All this while fireworks were detonating under the Micra's wheels. They also shot a lot of elements in different areas which have been blended together in 3D during post production. This commercial is like the new Micra car: a mixing of such different elements."
The way in which David Lynch filmed the car is in a way reminiscent of the way he shot women in Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive: with mystery, sensuality and with a sense of the bizarre.
Chris Garbutt: "In a shot going down from the top of a building, Lynch introduced a woman character with red hair looking out of a window. It's these details that inspire a similar, cool emotion to Twin Peaks or Mulholland Drive."
So, it's time to speak Micra...
Spafe (spontaneous + safe)
Simpology (simple + technology)
Smig (small + big)
Aggrendly (aggressive + friendly)
Thractical (thrilling + practical)
Luxurable (luxurious + affordable)
Compacious (compact + spacious)
The new Micra campaign will be launched all over Europe, in up to 30 countries, from January 2003. It will cover all media: TV, outdoors, radio, and internet. It goes on sale from 15 January.

Hmmm. Master of Diplomacy. I declare that advert ridiculeap.
I guess the commercial is essentially lame, and the Micra doesn't look much different from the VW Beetle.
Visually, though, that was beautiful.. you gotta admit it...

I don't want to, but I have to disagree. Too cluttered, too shiny. Take out the cityscape and just leave the mouth, the woman, the man and the car and slow it right down and it may have worked better. Need to see it in a cinema maybe...
Oh, c'mon, the shifting cityscape was good. Reminded me of "Dark City."
By the way, anyone who has not seen Lynch's Lumiere short (a very short short), go out and rent that video right now. (forgot the name of that video... ughh, what's the name of that video?)

Lumière et compagnie?
have any of you seen the :30 Tv spot Lynch did for playsation 2? it was supposedly the most aired commerical aroudn the world -- it played everywhere but the USA. its pretty interesting. he shot it on a PAL pd-150. its pretty much a surrealistic atmostphere, where a man is walking though a maze and bumps into things; along the lines of a a one eyed mummy and a duckman. its floating around the net somewhere, its worth checking out. hes done a few spots for the sci fi channel as well that are pretty cool.
i thought it was david lynch who did the one with the deer. thats a brilliant one for sure.

:?
Lynch had actually directed the whole series of "The Third Place" commercials for the PS2. You can generally find them if you hunt on Kazaa.
it was black & white and had a man with a duck-head in it, if i can recall it all fine. Eraserhead versus the painting-scene from FWWM actually.

David Lynch LOVES Chanel & Gucci
Source: TheStylephile
The haute couture shows are happening in Paris and we only wish that we could get a comment from director David Lynch about his take on the Chanel collection. (See him pictured with guests and a Chanel goody bag.) Maybe Lynch--known for his anachronistic, Jimmy Stewart-inspired patois-- would smile dreamily and say, "Golly gee, those ensembles sure were wowie!" Of course, the auteur must know his Alaia from his elbow. He was with style icon and model Isabella Rossellini from 1987 to 1991. Not to mention the fact that his films are much like couture shows: fanciful, irrational, and studded with more vibrant colors than a Pucci mini dress.
The Stylephile also reports with glee that Lynch, 61, will direct the next Gucci commercial for its latest eponymous perfume. Gucci's parent company (for the fragrance only--should have specified, sorry--ed.) Procter & Gamble released a statement which indicated why the man who forever immortalized a severed ear in "Blue Velvet" should tackle the task: "Lynch was selected for his holistic ability as an artist, his professional experience and knowledge, his never-ending research for beautiful images, his use of music and his modernity." Um, P&G neglected to commend his coif, a tornedo of adorable.
What to expect? Well, the notion of a dab of perfume behind the ear would be particularly striking if that ear happened to be, say, unattached to a model and languishing on a grassy knoll.

Gucci Hires David Lynch To Terrify And Confuse Consumers Into Buying New Perfume
Source: Defamer
Director and awards season cow wrangler David Lynch makes no secret of how he feels about the encroachment of corporate interests upon his stubbornly abstruse cinematic meditations. (Quoth: "Bullshit. Total fucking bullshit.") That isn't to say that he's above whoring himself out for the occasional contract work, however, as he has agreed to direct a TV spot for a new Gucci perfume, according to a press release from the fashion house's unsexy parent-company fragrance licensee, Procter & Gamble. From The Stylephile blog:
Lynch, 61, will direct the next Gucci commercial for its latest eponymous perfume. Gucci's parent company Procter & Gamble released a statement which indicated why the man who forever immortalized a severed ear in "Blue Velvet" should tackle the task: "Lynch was selected for his holistic ability as an artist, his professional experience and knowledge, his never-ending research for beautiful images, his use of music and his modernity."
It remains to be seen how the director's qualifications will manifest themselves into a thirty-second spot: Gucci executives could wind up extremely dissatisfied, having hoped he'd return to them with something more akin to Nicole Kidman in a gauzy gown scampering across a moonlit roof into her lover's arms, as opposed to the director's somewhat less romantic vision of a naked dwarf sitting at the head of a conference table, dabbing his nether regions seductively with the new scent to a dark, jazzy tune by Angelo Badalamenti.
lynch has directed tons of perfume ads, why is this one so special? i don't like how they say he's gonna make it wacky and weird, clearly they haven't seen his other perfume ads which are nothing but class.

there's a bunch more i think i downloaded from lynchnet or somewhere (i'm sure mac knows). i can upload them onto youtube if people want.
i am reminded of grace jones wrapped in dead branches and giving birth to a bottle of perfume in "boomerang..."

David Lynch Gucci Ad
Gucci's spring/summer 2008 show in Milan got off to suitably impressive start yesterday as the house screened the world-premiere of its first ever television ad, which promotes its new fragrance, Gucci by Gucci. Hollywood director David Lynch - famed for his surrealist take on narrative thanks to films such as Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet - shot the film on location at the Musee National des Arts D'Afrique et D'Oceanie in Paris. It stars top models Raquel Zimmerman, Natasha Poly and Freja Beha Erichsen, dressed in stunning Gucci gowns, to a soundtrack of Blondie's iconic hit Heart of Glass. "I wanted our first television advertising campaign to have that whimsical touch from a visionary film director such as David Lynch," says creative director Frida Giannini, who took a hands-on role in all aspects of development of the new fragrance - her first for the house. "I wanted him to capture the total essence of Gucci - and I'm thrilled with the result." The ad will run in Europe from late October, as will an accompanying print campaign.

seriously, some bones gyrating and dancing badly, that's the whole idea? david lynch should hang out with 50 cent cos he's laughing straight to the bank with this shit.
at first i thought it was a commercial for cocaine. i'm sure lynch didn't use handheld cam for the overhead shot of the city life. unless someone scotched taped him under a helicopter.
Now this was too cool for school, but Pubrick is right. Damn, that's THIN!
it felt like an SNL skit.
retarded.
Yeah, way too thin, it makes want to put them on an in & out burger diet, why does the fashion ppl still think those bone girls are beautiful? :yabbse-undecided:
I liked the behind the scenes, hope it was a nice pay day for DL.

David Lynch to Direct the Latest Lush Christian Dior Ad
Source: Cinematical
The marriage between the fashion and film worlds is nothing new. Whether it be casual fashion -- like the Tarsem Singh directed ads for Levi's -- or the latest high-drama ads for Christian Dior, directors have been putting an elaborate spin on our styles for quite some time. Dior's decadent ad campaign boasting their latest collection is laced with a little classic Hollywood and a little rock and roll. The four-chapter short film series is directed by Olivier Dahan, Annie Leibovitz and David Lynch with French actress Marion Cotillard starring as Lady Noire, Lady Rouge and Lady Bleu respectively -- with a fourth mystery lady arriving soon.
Dahan and Cotillard reunite after La Vie en Rose for Lady Noire, which takes a cue from its name and dips into film noir for a brooding and beguiling adventure. Photographer Leibovitz directs Cotillard in Lady Rouge, which uses a posh but old school theater and an apartment I'd kill for as the backdrop of a music video-style extravaganza. Cotillard performs the very catchy Eyes of Mars to narrate the story, with back up from Franz Ferdinand -- all while wearing super skinny black suits and looking gorgeous.
David Lynch is on tap for the upcoming third film, set to debut on the Lady Dior website on May 15. The Blue Velvet director will be following Lady Bleu in a Shanghai-inspired story. The 12-minute film was shot in the Chinese city last December and as designer John Galliano explains it, "Marion is reciting a poem that he [Lynch] wrote, and was inspired by the Pearl Tower itself. The words and building fuse in the picture he paints on-screen." I'm sure it will be nothing short of amazing.

Watch This: David Lynch's Dior Ad
Source: Cinematical
Remember the recent news that David Lynch helmed a short film for Christian Dior's current ad campaign? Following in the footsteps of Olivier Dahan and Annie Leibovitz, the filmmaker wrote a poem about Shanghai and morphed it into this brief, bag-centric tale where Marion Cotillard visits the city for the first time and has a strange encounter with a man, a hand bag, and a blue flower. The film has now hit Dior's website, and you can check it out after the jump.
Lady Bleu is classic Lynch thriving in deep reds and rich blues, with an eerie vibrating score (it sounds like classic Angelo Badalamenti, but it's Lynch with Dean Hurley), strange characters, and timelessness resulting from a mixture of old and new. Of course, without the omg look at this bag! focus, the film would be even better, as even Lynch can't make the product placement look like anything other than product placement. In fact, it almost seems as if Lynch envisioned the film with just a flower, but then threw the bag in there when Dior came a-calling.
What's most interesting, however, is how the film embodies Lynch's style without delving into the terror usually present in his art. It is, for sure, eerie and subtly thrilling, but it doesn't fall into darkness, shrieks, and mayhem. One has to wonder if the filmmaker's commitment to transcendental meditation has finally made its way into his art. While Lynch often raves about how TM is a dive into bliss, his art rarely features such, well, bliss. Save for the sweetness of The Straight Story, there's always darkness and emotional turmoil. This film takes that darkness and gives it a sweet result.
Do you think it will continue in his future work, or did Dior just want Lynch without the terror?
