Title: SANDLER: The definitive thread
Post by: oakmanc234 on October 25, 2003, 01:21:57 AM
I think its about time we gave the man himself an ultimate thread. From his skits to his comedy CD's to his movies/upcoming projects, this'll be the 'Sandman' source.

So...I'd say thats that mattress man....

Sandler is awful... he used to be funny, but now all of his characters are the same... sure, PTA proved that the boy could actually act... but too bad he hasn't decided to do more of that in his career...

It's weird that you say that Sandler keeps playing the same character, because I noticed recently that pretty much every character he's ever played in a movie has a first name that ends in "-y" or "-ie."

Billy Madison- Duh
Happy Gilmore- Duh again
Bulletproof- Archie Moses
Wedding Singer- Robbie Hart
Waterboy- Bobby Boucher
Big Daddy- Sonny Koufax
Little Nicky- Duh thrice
The Animal- Townie (hehe, that's how he's identified on the IMDB)
Punch-Drunk Love- Barry Egan
Eight Crazy Nights- Davey (and Whitey)
Fifty First Kisses- Henry Roth

Even in obscure movies like "Mixed Nuts" (Louie) and Going Overboard (Shecky Moskowitz), the pattern holds. The only ones that don't work are
"Mr. Deeds", but that's because it was a remake and they kept the character name from the original movie; and "Anger Management" (Dave Buznick, but again, that script wasn't originated by Sandler)

As far as "Fifty First Dates" goes, it looks OK, but he really needs to vary these movies a little bit. Every movie he does has a cameo by Rob Schneider, a scene where an old person does something "wacky", a scene where someone gets the shit beat out of them (Ok, this time it's Drew doing the beating instead of Adam, but still...)

That's because if a name ends in "ie" or "y", it usually means that the person is a little kid or retarded... its a cute way moms call their kids when they're young... that's because little Adamy is always playing little kids (mentally)...  :)

We called my youngest brother Timmy for his entire childhood... now, after 10 long years of adamant insistence, he's pretty well re-trained us all to call him "Tim." NOT "Timmy."

Sandler should drop the whole Happy Madison thing. Sure, it's making him the shit load of money he wants to make, and the fanbase is huge.. but he's great with serious material. He needs to experience with more good stuff.

I completely agree... i'd love to see Sandler in more serious roles... of course, we all remember what happened to Jim Carrey when he wanted to do more "serious acting" with The Majestic...

Adam Sandler Will Click Around His Life
Source: The Hollywood Reporter

Adam Sandler will next star in Click, a comedy that centers on a workaholic architect who finds a universal remote that allows him to fast-forward and rewind to different parts of his life. Complications arise when the remote starts to overrule his choices.

Production on the Columbia Pictures/Revolution Studios project is set to begin in April. The script was written by Bruce Almighty screenwriters Steve Koren and Mark O'Keefe. No director is currently attached.

Sandler is currently shooting the James L. Brooks-directed cross-cultural comedy/drama Spanglish.

He has done already PDL with PTA and I heard he was also gonna act in the next Tarantino project, Inglorious Bastards (?)

I never got why so many people bashed The Majestic. I get why it didn't make a lot of bank (due to everyone not wanting to see a non-comedic Jim Carrey). But when I finally saw Majestic I thought it was a quaint, nicely done picture.

Hopefully Eternal Sunshine will follow the pattern of the Truman Show rather than the Majestic with its box office.

I enjoyed 'Anger' too. I was watchin the DVD recently with the commentary and it was mentioned that PTA came to the set in the scene where Sandler is yelling at Nicholson for the whole Heather Graham incident. And Sandler mentioned in another scene 'I look like Barry Egan there'. Just thought I'd share.....

'Punch-Drunk' IS his best 'film' and 'Happy Gilmore' is my fave comedy of his. I'm wrapped that he's currently filming the new James L. Brooks comedy/drama 'Spanglish' with Tea Leoni and Anne Bancroft. Another 'real acting' job for the Sandman is something to be anticipated.

Adam Sandler will star in an update of the classic 1974 comedy The Longest Yard it was announced today by Sherry Lansing, Chairman, Motion Picture Group, Paramount Pictures and Donald De Line, Vice Chairman, Motion Picture Group and President, Paramount Pictures. The film is set to go into production in June 2004. Paramount will partner and co-produce the film with Columbia Pictures. "Adam is a brilliant actor and comedian. 'The Longest Yard' is the perfect film to showcase his genius," said Ms. Lansing.

"Adam and Jack are great filmmakers and wonderful collaborators," said Mr. De Line. "We have known each other since we worked together on 'The Waterboy' and I am thrilled to be reuniting with them on 'The Longest Yard.'"

yes, it was very touching, and i think that song and its context embodies much of what Sandler's about. that man always somehow manages to bring a lighter side to a dark subject. you could really hear him holding back a lot of emotional energy while he was delievering the song, which i thought was beautiful and shows how adam really just wants to make people laugh. i think thats the greatest joy he gets out of being an actor/entertainer. he makes people forget all that dark stuff.

You put that really well SmellyBoobFungus. Sandler was great that night. I love it whenever he's on Letterman. That song had just the right mix of silly jokes and heartfelt sincerity, he sings jokes about being 'well endowed' and banging Marilyn Monroe and then sudden sad lyrics like "Stan....the man....is gone". Legend. His goofy hair-style for 'Spanglish' was weird though lol.

I'm not a big Sandler fan. But I love the dude he uses in all his movies Allen Covert.  I was watching freaks and geeks last night and he was in an episode of it. He looks different in everything he does. He's like the funny Oldman. I love this guy. He makes me laugh so hard, and is really the only reason I check out Sandler flicks. i didn't think he needed his own thread though.

Sandler's 'Yard' Remake Lured to New Mexico
Souce: Reuters

Adam Sandler's remake of "The Longest Yard" will shoot in New Mexico in part to take advantage of tax rebates and location incentives offered by the state, officials said Wednesday.

"This film was won and lost several times during fierce competition with Hawaii and Illinois," New Mexico economic development secretary Rick Homans said.

The Paramount Pictures project, also expected to star Chris Rock and Burt Reynolds, will benefit from a 15% rebate on production-related taxes as well as a waiver of location fees on state property. The filmmakers plan to spend about eight weeks in preproduction at Old Main, the old state penitentiary in Santa Fe, and another four to five weeks filming there.

In an effort to attract more production, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson went to Los Angeles last fall to urge Paramount chairman Sherry Lansing and others to consider the advantages of that state's film industry. "The Longest Yard" represents the 14th feature to be shot in New Mexico since Richardson took office in January 2003. Other recent features shot entirely or in part in New Mexico include "The Missing" and "21 Grams."

"Our efforts to increase film and television production in New Mexico and make the state a major media center continue to pay off," Richardson said. "Once again, our incentives, our qualified work force and the beauty and culture of New Mexico have beat out formidable competition."

Is Adam Sandler a Republican (And "fuckin DeLuca")?

REVERSE BLACKLISTING

James Hirsen, NewsMax.com (yeah, I know, I know)
Monday, Aug. 23, 2004

I've got a whole chapter on it in my book "Tales from the Left Coast." It's the concept that those in Tinseltown with conservative leanings are hesitant to express their ideas publicly because, if they do, it can be detrimental to their careers.

Now if you go out looking for a blacklist dispatch, chances are you're not going to find one. And it's unlikely that we'll be seeing SAG hearings held on the subject any time soon. But I know from my research and firsthand experience, and the tons of personal communication I've had with those who have suffered, are afraid they may suffer, or who have suffered mistakenly, that reverse blacklisting is very real and potentially devastating.

That industry folks would contact me over the years with the proviso that I keep their names private is understandable, given the way Republicans, libertarians, patriots and people of traditional faith are treated by the Hollywood establishment. The discovery that a person has such tendencies can quickly land him or her on the Tinseltown rebuff list. There are, of course, several members of the Hollywood community who are outspoken about their beliefs and quite frankly don't give a rip, but they're usually the ones who have already achieved the level of success that affords them the luxury of thumbing their noses.

It just so happens that, in its September issue, Details magazine is outing Hollywood GOP sympathizers. The magazine claims that, in order to address the celebrity deficit that the GOP currently has, the Republican National Committee has unveiled a list of stars who veer toward the Republican side of the aisle.

Some of the names, like Jessica Simpson and Shannen Doherty, are already known. But others are more unexpected, like Adam Sandler and Freddie Prinze Jr., although Prinze's wife Sarah Michelle Gellar has been known to lean right in the past.

In a related article, Sony producer Mike DeLuca has stepped up and acknowledged his Republican affiliation, describing the reaction in Hollywood as the equivalent of being "exposed as a serial killer." DeLuca pointed out some lefty hypocrisy, saying, "They scream about the environment before they hop onto their private jets and blow 8,000 pounds of fuel getting to the Hamptons."

One of the celebs named in the Details article has responded to the outing incident via her publicist and has done so in an entertaining and quasi-historical manner. The star is Mandy Moore, and the New York Post has reported the response as, "Mandy is not, nor has she ever been, a Republican."

I'm half expecting to wake up tomorrow morning to a news flash that has Mandy asking the prying reporters of Details magazine this question: "Have you no decency?"

---------------------------------

I hope not. I can USUALLY separate "Tha Man from His Art" but, Jeez. I mean, you know, look: I love Vincent Gallo and he's a Republican. But for some reason, Sandler would look like a stupid asshole to me if this turns out to be true.

Beckinsale, Hasselhoff 'Click' for Col

Kate Beckinsale and David Hasselhoff have signed on to the upcoming Columbia/Revolution Studios film "Click."

They join Adam Sandler and Christopher Walken in the romantic comedy, to be directed by Frank Coraci.

The story centers on a workaholic architect who discovers a remote control that allows him to fast forward and rewind to different parts of his life. Hasselhoff will play Sandler's boss in the movie, and Beckinsale is the female lead.

Mark O'Keefe and Steven Wayne Koren wrote the script, with Tim Herlihy rewriting.

Sandler To Be a Dad

Adam Sandler is gearing up for life as a real-life dad, after learning that his wife Jackie is pregnant. Pals of the couple tell People magazine they're expecting their first child to arrive in the spring. The pair, who exchanged nuptials in 2003, have been together for seven years. Jackie, a model and actress, had a brief role in Sandler's Big Daddy, playing the waitress who takes his order for a root beer in the sports bar scene.

'Pronounce' weds James with Sandler
Source: Hollywood Reporter

Adam Sandler and Kevin James are in negotiations to play firefighters who pretend to be a gay couple in Universal Pictures "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry."

"Wedding Crashers" helmer David Dobkin is attached to direct the long-gestating comedy, which is being produced by Shady Acres' Tom Shadyac and Michael Bostick and Happy Madison's Jack Giarraputo.

The firefighters in "Chuck and Larry" pose as a married gay couple in order to receive domestic partner benefits. Alexander Payne and James Taylor, the Oscar-winning team behind "Sideways" and "About Schmidt," have written the current draft of the screenplay based on a treatment by Lew Gallo.

The coming together of Sandler and James finally puts the project, which has been at the studio since the late 1990s, on the runway. A parade of writers including Gary Ross, Jon Favreau and Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel has hammered out drafts over the years, and various combinations of actors such as Will Smith and Nicolas Cage, Smith and James Gandolfini and Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson have flirted with the movie.

that could be funny, considering the abundance of potential funniness.

POTENTIAL FUNNINESS:
Adam Sandler  [8.5/10]
David Dobkin   [7/10, will hopefully go dairy-free this time]
Alexander Payne and James Taylor   [8/10]
and as a bonus, Kevin James*  [7/10]
*based on King of Queens, i havn't seen his stand-up

odd, i'd never before heard of this long-gestating fake-gay-firefighter-couple comedy script and its various combinations of writers and actors. the coulda-been's are amazing. imagine, Will Smith and James Gandolfini would've been INSANE .

I love Billy Madison so much.  The amount of incredibly absurd stuff that happens casually kinda blows my mind.  I can't think of another movie that does it this well.  Other Sandler movies are very grounded in some kind of reality; Billy Madison takes place in a practically Lynchian universe in comparison.  Imaginary penguins, random dancing to music from nowhere, Steve Buscemi putting on lipstick while listening to Electric Light Orchestra, a bus full of kids peeing their pants, Chris Farley sucking on the imaginary penguin's beak, and so much more.  I generally don't find "random for the sake of random" humor to be funny, but this movie really gets it to work.

The Wedding Singer is good, but definitely very grounded in comparison with Billy Madison.

yeah he does, because he puts out so much shit it's better to keep it all in one place instead of tainting the waters with a bunch of dumb threads.

Who saw That's My Boy! ? It was funny, made me laugh more than anything else I've seen recently besides maybe the new South Parks, but in the end it was all "Sound and Fury signifying nothing," as we've all sadly come to expect from the dude. Completely ridiculous, but I'll watch it again.

I was thinking about which serious role of his was his best performance. And the main three in mind was PDL, Love Reign O'er Me and er... Click. To me it's the second one because it feels like he did a straight forward role rather than a wee bizarre one (PDL).

Adam was on Norm Macdonald's podcast. Fun talk, the most candid I've ever heard him in an interview. Kinda surprised he'd do this, to tell the truth. Anything for old Norm.

This just reminded how much I hate that SNL stopped releasing season box sets.
I was always planning to buy the Farley years, which overlap with Sandler.
Maybe the release would have worked better if they switched back and forth between eras.
Season 1, then the next release would be the first season of the next significant change, and so on, and go through that cycle and then release season 2. I don't really have much interest from Season 1 until the late 80's.
Of course, a lot of pre DVD box set era shows have to deal with licensing problems.
Never thought about why they didn't start releasing the modern era seasons, 2000's on, when they would have had the forethought about licensing.

Back to Sandman, I saw Billy Madison uncut on IFC last year, probably the first time in widescreen. Sandler's era was when VHS/Pan & Scan was king. So I wanted to have Billy and Happy on DVD and widescreen. Those movies were pretty huge. His first comedy album was pretty big. Someone must of copied a tape of it for me. I'm pretty sure I saw Big Daddy and Waterboy in the theater. After that, I didn't really see any of his comedies. I don't know if his material changed, or if it was just my own change.
